Mid-Term Elections Are Incredibly Close - and Incredibly Important

Voting is a must
Politics • Views: 31,348

The Senate and Governor races this year are incredibly close, according to the polling: Look How Close Democrats Are to Winning … and Losing.

Using the poll aggregator at the Huffington Post, I’ve compiled the current state of the hottest races this cycle, as well as what would happen if Dems shift the numbers a mere two points, then three points:

In the Senate, if the election was held today and these numbers held up, Republicans would pick up AR, AK, CO, IA, LA, MT, SD, and WV. They would lose Kansas for a net pick up of seven seats, or a 52-48 Mitch McConnell majority. Heck, at that point Kansas Independent Greg Orman would try to caucus with Republicans, and if they took him, that would be a 53-47 GOP majority.

But slide those numbers over just three points — easily doable if we get our “non-likely” voters to the polls, and things change significantly. Suddenly, Republicans are only assured of pickups in AK, LA, MT, and WV, with losses in Kansas and a too-close-to-call race in Arkansas (Blue), Kentucky (Red), and probably South Dakota. Even if they squeaked by in those three states, they’d still be shy of the majority.

It’s vitally important for anyone who cares about liberal values to get out and vote in this upcoming election; it’s going to be very close and the enthusiasm of the base is what will make the difference. Will we see another Republican sweep? I certainly hope not; that would be a real disaster for the country in my opinion. But all of us need to do our part in getting out the vote if we’re going to have a chance of preventing it.

Charles, may I suggest it is more important for everyone to vote for Democrats not just anyone who cares about liberal values.

This is about what is real and stopping out-of-control ideology not in everyone’s best interest.

To me you have two choices. Practical and Crazy. People of ALL political stances should see it that way. It is that clear.

Hopefully Mali can contain things as Nigeria and Senegal were able to do - getting contact tracing and other protocols in place to handle this case.

Meanwhile, the media here in NYC is essentially running a countdown clock until the results on the latest suspected case comes back later tonight. I hope it’s negative, but am prepared to watch it get confirmed. And Bellevue will handle the case with aplomb. They’ve got good facilities to handle infectious diseases, and if they’re following protocols, then they should be able to limit the spread.

I’m hoping that Kentucky voters kick Mitch, and all of these pollsters and pundits, in the balls on November 4.

Kentucky set a record of 3,105,349 registered for the Primary Election held in May.
Since then, that record has been broken with 3,147,157, an increase of 1.4 percent, or 41,800 voters, during those five intervening months.

Lots of interest here, and that is completely due to McConnell vs Grimes.

Absentee ballots are on the way. And letting people know just how important it is to vote - and to expose just how extreme the GOP is, even here in NJ. Between Christie and his comments about the minimum wage (he wishes he could ignore the issue) or the need for the GOP to control the voting apparatus (so the GOP can depress voter turnout, limit who votes, etc.), and the likes of Scott Garrett, we’ve got plenty of GOPers who are for rolling back rights on all fronts.

I got in an argument with a woman running as GOP for town council last year. Her view on the shutdown was that Obama and Obama alone caused it. Local level political denial at its finest.

In my district, the GOP is actually pulling the “Let’s run a retired Eagle; people like football” stunt they pulled when they ran Jon Runyan. Unreal.

I consider it a sign of how severely fucked the GOP is as a party going forward that this is the second midterm season of a two-term president who every media outlet is saying is unpopular, yet the control of the Senate remains in limbo. It shouldn’t even be this close, yet we’re actually debating whether the GOP will be able to pull it off next month.

In a country which places so much emphasis on the individual, it’s not surprising.

I’d bet only 1 person in 10 could tell you right now who has a majority in the Senate, and which party rules the House.

It’s also worth pointing out that our esteemed Gov. Christie went stumping for Tea Bag darling Gov. LePage of Maine with the last few weeks.

The ‘moderate’ hero of the current GOP is trying to help re-elect a guy who matches Glenn Beck on the Batshit Crazy scale. This is what passes for rationality in the Republican party these days.

“Very bad news” would be 70% or better. Hell, the GOP shouldn’t be looking at less than an 80% chance. 63% in an midterm season where Democrats are defending more seats than Republicans is pretty sad.

Nearly 50 DAs decline to investigate Chisholm in John Doe

Nearly 50 elected district attorneys from around Wisconsin have declined a request by a conservative group to investigate the Milwaukee County prosecutor behind a secret probe into Gov. Scott Walker’s campaign and his allies.

Citing a conflict of interest, Dodge County District Attorney Kurt Klomberg, a Republican, turned down the investigation request by the conservative activist Chris Kliesmet, a member of Citizens for Responsible Government, a group that has supported Walker.

After denying Kliesmet’s request for a secret probe into the conduct of Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm, a Democrat, Klomberg then asked 49 other district attorneys around the state whether they would be able to take on the case. One didn’t answer and the other 48 declined to investigate Chisholm, citing conflicts of interest or a lack of resources.

State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, a Republican, also declined to take the case because of a conflict of interest, Klomberg wrote in a letter Wednesday to Kliesmet.

RWNJ have been beating the drums to investigate DA John Chisholm for some kind of corruption (never too specific). Well I hope this will put an end to it.

I have to say, New York’s Democratic Party is spending a lot of money out here in Suffolk County. I’ve been receiving campaign mail at least three times a week for the past month.

An interesting fact - I got a robo-call from the NY Conservative party the other day, and they’re actually endorsing Democrat Jim Gaughran for Suffolk County Comptroller, as a result of the Republican incumbent giving his wife a $50K per year job and assigning her all of the overtime.

This belongs on the previous thread, but I think it’s been quarantined.

Unbelievable. Almost.

PORTALES, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico’s top health officials say the risk of an Ebola case in the state is low, but administrators at Roosevelt General Hospital aren’t taking any chances.

Starting Friday, the rural eastern New Mexico hospital will begin pre-screening patients and visitors for Ebola at a parking lot checkpoint. Each incoming vehicle must stop so visitors and patients can answer a series of questions regarding recent travel and symptoms.

Hospital CEO Larry Leaming says he’s taking the proactive measure to keep his staff and patients safe.

In the event of a positive screening, Leaming says the suspected patient would be transferred to a quarantined section of the hospital.

A spokeswoman with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says she’s not aware of any other hospitals that have set up parking lot checkpoints.

69 Dead Tired  Oct 23, 2014 4:52:47pm

I’m really a bit pissed about the way Canada and the world is viewing this attack against the Parliament of Canada. In June we had three RCMP officers killed by a loon who patterned himself after the Sovereign Citizen’s group from the US who themselves are related to RW terrorism there. This loon was a terrorist wannabe.

This latest attack was from an ISIS wannabe who was as affected by the media as much as the Moncton loon. He was born in Quebec, he had no contact with ISIS as far as we know. He didn’t invade Canada in any way. Suggesting that this latest attack is somehow qualitatively different than the attack in Moncton and will change Canada forever doesn’t make sense.

Both instances were home grown terrorists, or they were both crazies affected by social media and terrorist propaganda. We need to be consistent.

The fact one was Muslim and the other not shouldn’t be the deciding factor in how we view and react to these two attacks.

And no, neither indicate we are in more danger today from ISIS than we were last week, and that attack will only change Canadians if we let it.

Oh well.

I liked it. And the one thing I like about it, while it uses young girls and makes some cringe, how do the Republican men treat women as far as politics of women’s issues?

That’s right.

Like Little Girls.

So, little girls telling them to shove it (think of the kids) resonates with the real target of the message. Women that are pissed off and sick of being nothing but the little woman.

But then…I may be reading it wrong as I tend to look at things in many ways.

EPR-radar is right - as it was for me, peak potty mouth was third or fourth grade, kids cuss (when the adults can’t hear), that life.

If they had made it into a cartoon, I might be more sympathetic. As it looks to me, the children were manipulated by adults to swear like sailors while spouting off boilerplate feminist talking points. Do children of that age even know what rape is? I think the creators of this video are being irresponsible with their messaging.

Some kids that age know what rape is from first hand experience. Before they know the word for it. Before they know they have a right to not experience it.

When I first saw that picture my thought was, “Man. He can’t fake concern to save his life.”

If my understanding is correct I hold Our Dear Leader partly responsible for this.

We used to have a long gun registry here in Canada. A person owning a firearm had to register it. The police liked at as they could find out in that most dangerous of policing situations, domestic calls, whether there were firearms in the residence or not. The registry saved more than a few lives.

The ‘Conservatives’ got rid of most of it in 2011.

Michael Zehaf-Bibeau had a criminal record, and people with criminal records were not allowed to possess firearms. Had he tried I’m sure he would have been flagged.

So I hold Our Dear Leader partly responsible for yesterday’s tragedy, in my opinion.

There is way too much noise being made about the Senate this time around. If I were a Democrat, I would pay a lot more attention to the Governors’ races.

There is a structural advantage to whichever party controls the state voting procedures. Not a huge advantage, but at least they can prevent the voter ID nonsense to a certain extent.

They are even more important from 2016-2019 because whoever is in power in 2020 will get to do the every-ten-years gerrymandering. The only reason Republicans control the House is because they had an advantage in 2010.
