Dumbest Man on Internet Freaks Out Over “SHOCK VIDEO” That Isn’t the Least Bit Shocking

Yes, dear reader, the Dumbest Man on the Internet has beclowned himself again, in Jim Hoft’s Never-Ending Cavalcade of Pure Fail! This time Jim has seen a SHOCK VIDEO on Gretchen Carlson’s ridiculous Fox News show, a horrifying SHOCK VIDEO that depicts two New York City police officers throwing gloves and masks into a public trash can. That’s all Jim needs to start running around screaming, “EBOLA GLOVES! EBOLA MASKS! EBOLA TRASH CAN! WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!”

SHOCK VIDEO—- NYC Police Seen Tossing Ebola Gloves, Masks Into Trash Can on Street! | the Gateway Pundit

Do not panic. All is well.
New York City police officers were seen tossing their Ebola masks and gloves into a trash can on the street.
The officers were seen walking near Dr. Craig Spencer’s apartment building.

But don’t worry. It’s not like anyone goes dumpster diving in New York City(?)
Via The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson:

It’s the Gateway Pundit, so you just know there’s a punch line coming up, right? Wait for it… the cops were never inside Dr. Spencer’s apartment.

From Mashable, where they actually bothered to call the police about the story before losing their shit: NYPD: Cops Who Threw Away Gloves in Street Didn’t Enter Ebola Patient’s Home.

An NYPD spokeswoman dismissed the concerns, telling Mashable that the two officers were just on “a traffic post” and were not “inside of the residence or anything like that.” Asked again whether they were ever inside Spencer’s apartment, the spokeswoman responded: “Absolutely not.”

Will Jim Hoft add a correction to his post now? Wait for it… (but don’t hold your breath…)

I’d have to be a world class freediver to hold my breath long enough for DimJim to have a responsible fault, much less the awareness to actually correct something.

Pointed this out in the dead thread, but the Daily Mail, on which that video and story were based (and then run by other outlets, including Fox) even included the line that they had no way to know whether the officers seen in the video/photos were in contact with the patient or entered the building. They just left it up to the reader to scroll all the way to the bottom for the exquisite caveat:

The photos and video, all shot before Spencer’s Ebola was actually confirmed, do not show whether these officers actually entered his building.

However, some are suggesting that for the sake of safety - not to mention public sanity - it would have made sense to discard of these masks and gloves and tape in a biohazard bag.

There’s no evidence these officers actually entered the scene, let alone touched anything that might resemble a biohazard. But the Daily Fail warns that for psychological purposes, they should have bagged everything biohazard anyways - even stuff that was in no way ever in contact with the doctor - like the police tape.

Another health care worker returning from Africa and not showing symptoms - meaning she can’t be spreading the disease because the only way to get it is to be actively symptomatic. Hopefully this person doesn’t get the disease, but she too is following protocols and working with authorities.

Memo to right wing: want to stop Ebola? Spend the money and deliver the goods and doctors to West Africa so that they can stop it in its tracks. We’ve shown that a proper medical institution with well staffed and trained professionals can heal those sickened by the disease. They can improve the survival rate tremendously. They can make a deadly outbreak a survivable one. They can get those who are unwilling to come to the hospital because it’s seen as a death sentence to come because they know they’ve got a shot at beating Ebola.

Proper and prompt medical care makes a world of difference.

Instead, we’re going to hear about travel bans. That’s akin to nothing more than burying your head in the sand and letting Africa burn.

It is simply bad practice for disposing of hazmat gear…and reinforcing bad habits when it doesn’t really count will set you up for failure when it does count.

Always practice the way you want to perform for the real thing. If you don’t want officers doing stupid shit when they do come into contact witha deadly pathogen…DO NOT have them doing it on a normal basis.

That’s actually a rational explanation for wanting to dispose of them in a certain fashion - consistency makes for good technique and practice, so if they face the real deal, they might not expose themselves or others.

But the Daily Fail wasn’t interested in any of that - only that they were spreading Ebola even though they never came into contact with anything.

Proper and prompt medical care makes a world of difference.

This x100. Not-so-random factoid for the day, per wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org

In 2011, the WHO estimated that there were about 158,000 deaths caused by measles. This is down from 630,000 deaths in 1990. In developed countries, death occurs in 1 to 2 cases out of every 1,000 (0.1% - 0.2%). In populations with high levels of malnutrition and a lack of adequate healthcare, mortality can be as high as 10%. In cases with complications, the rate may rise to 20-30%. Increased immunization has led to a 78% drop in measles deaths which made up 25% of the decline in mortality in children under five.

On the subject of guns, Ebola and RWNJs, Hunter at DailyKos hits another one out of the park: dailykos.com

An astute observer would note that the United States currently has no surgeon general. The United States has no surgeon general because the president’s nominee for the position once opined that yes, getting shot by one of America’s many guns would be bad for a person’s health, and that was all it took for the conspiracy theorists at the NRA to have a fit, and for Jason Chaffetz’s party to block the nomination until the president nominates a surgeon general who correctly reckons getting shot with one of America’s many guns should be considered a nutritional supplement. Chaffetz does not know this because he is not serious about governing, and therefore appears on Fox News only to spout whatever criticism of Obama comes to mind.

Also, this guy reportedly had a ‘blank stare’ just prior to shooting - doesn’t that imply some kind of drug or medication? Or evil.

I used to be a firm Second Amendment advocate in that I did not think we should go much past current class 3 regs and the licensing of ownership (as opposed to licensing and registration of individual guns).

I still think so, but the goal posts have moved right out of sight in recent years. Now I am a gun grabbing lefty fanatic and probably in league with Muslims, communists, and Mexican infiltrators.

I own an absolutely appalling, embarrassing number of firearms, which happens when one comes from gun folk and happen to be the only reasonable and responsible person in the family to inherit such devices. I used to be pretty damned pro 2A, but lately I’ve been fronting ideas like making all handguns NFA weapons without exception.

If you’ve got 20 minutes, this is an excellent criticism video about the bad base assumptions inherent in GamerGate. It’s a somewhat different take than other, also valid criticisms, and I find it particularly valuable since it points out the continuity between the “extreme” behavior and the larger movement: specifically, that GG’s idea of “normal” versus “interloper.”

It starts slow and explains some ideas beforehand with a film example, but the meat—the last two-thirds—is very well executed.

Most of the entries dealt with things like the Second Coming of Christ or Martian invasion. The winner, though, was “Arch-Duke Franz Ferdinand Alive, World War Fought by Mistake!”

I’m disgusted. I’m sick of living in a country so full of callous, cynical people that no longer seem to have any grip on reality and really act as if reality does not matter.

We don’t have a gun problem per say in this country. We have an ignorance problem. And it is tearing this great nation to shreds when they lose their shit over Ebola and ISIS beheadings, but right in their fucking faces are guns actually killing people hourly.

A lone patient in Texas…and the country freaks about Ebola in America like it is right down the street.

How many shooting today? Washington. California, and others…why those are far away and have no bearing on their lives.

“Don’t take away my rights” they scream. But I guess it is okay for someone to take away a life. What more of a right does any human have but to live? What right does anyone have to own instruments that take away that basic fundamental right?

No I don’t have an answer. Answers fly right over the heads of the ignorant anyway. All I know is there are many nations that have gun control measures, if they allow them at all, and they do not have the issues we have. They don’t have the crimes that gun supporters claim guns stop and they don’t have the daily shootings. So, what is the problem with sensible gun law?

Reality tells me this country is fucking stupid about guns. It’s pathetic. We are pathetic.

Maybe when Congressmen start to lose their lives right and left in random shootings they will do something.

I guess that says they do not represent the people that do lose their lives left and right in random shootings. They represent the stupid and the gun industry.

Where can I vote the gun industry out? Oh wait, I can’t. That is un-American.

Well, I admitted in an earlier thread that I didn’t think voluntary “quarantines” were enough.

Health experts say that Ebola can’t be transmitted until you show symptoms—yet they really aren’t that specific about when in the course of the disease you should be considered a carrier. At least, I’m not clear on that. Dr. Spencer came back to the US on 10/17, and 6-7 days later, had a fever of 103. So, he had obviously been infected for some time if 21 days (?) is the quarantine period.

One other area not being mentioned in the press is the subject of sex, just a general avoidance of “bodily fluids”, avoiding the subject of sex altogether in listing activities. I would suspect that sexual activity could be one of the major transmitters of the disease, considering the “bodily fluids” involved in it.

Dr. Spencer was not contagious before that morning. His fever was not near 103 degrees when he reported in.

Blaming and attacking the victims seems to be the red hot trend in RW conspiracy culture: the Sandy Hook parents, Bowe Bergdahl, and now the recently recovered ebola patients.
Conspiracy believers apparently respond very favorably to this. Among their other despicable attributes, these stupid people seem to be vicarious bullies, especially cowardly and vicious ones at that.

Their reaction to ISIS, Ebola, you name it and they’re afraid of it, demonstrates to me that they’re deep-dyed cowards. They want to be tough guys, but their cowardice precludes it. And that drives them mad.

Hey! I’ve been hoping to catch you while I’m lurking. I’ve been saving this for you and anyone else who might be dealing with autism (or Asperger syndrome, as some here have mentioned ):

To Siri, With Love
How One Boy With Autism Became BFF With Apple’s Siri

Just how bad a mother am I? I wondered, as I watched my 13-year-old son deep in conversation with Siri. Gus has autism, and Siri, Apple’s “intelligent personal assistant” on the iPhone, is currently his BFF. Obsessed with weather formations, Gus had spent the hour parsing the difference between isolated and scattered thunderstorms — an hour in which, thank God, I didn’t have to discuss them. After a while I heard this:

Gus: “You’re a really nice computer.”

Siri: “It’s nice to be appreciated.”

Gus: “You are always asking if you can help me. Is there anything you want?”

Siri: “Thank you, but I have very few wants.”

Gus: “O.K.! Well, good night!”

Siri: “Ah, it’s 5:06 p.m.”

Gus: “Oh sorry, I mean, goodbye.”

Siri: “See you later!”

re: #173 Backwoods_Sleuth

“escalated pretty fast” is subjective.
I have no idea of the actual timeline, not do I particularly care.
Dr. Spencer was not contagious before that morning. His fever was not near 103 degrees when he reported in.
I’m just not going to join the freakout bandwagon demanding involuntary quarantines. Mr. Duncan’s family went into quarantine and none of them ended up infected. Where will all of these mandatory quarantines take place? Are we going to reopen Ellis Island or Alcatraz?

I’m just trying to understand how Ebola develops in the human body and how “contagious” someone is during the process, that’s all.

I suppose a lot depends on how “intimate” the contact is with the afflicted person. Just being around someone with Ebola would not be enough, I would think, and from what I’ve read earlier, the virus dies on dry surfaces—it has to have some kind of medium in which to thrive. Don’t know if that’s an absolute or not, but it makes sense.

Health pros who handle bodily fluids of an infected person would seem to be “easy targets” if they had any skin exposure whatsoever to those fluids.

I find you so pernicious and repugnant that the idea of fucking your shit up gives me an erection.” Elam has also made a career of sorts out of claiming that men are victims of domestic violence as often as women. Why do we need to do rah rah events at work anyway? I just want to come to work, do my job, collect my check, and go home. If I wanted to spend time with those people I’ll do it on my own time.

\grouchy misanthrope

The only company event I ever really enjoyed was a mini- “survival” course held at the fire training facility in Charlotte while working for Barclays. We rapelled down a 3 story bldg, flew out on a guy wire, climbed, etc. Cured me of my fear of heights somewhat. I was already in my 40s, about the only decade in which I was very athletic and fit , which helped, and was glad I signed up for it. I’d do it again, too. : )

What an amazing asshat he is.

So, he’s now pushing baseless rumors and smears about DWB/MSF.

They’ve been fighting the Ebola outbreak with next to no outside support and they were ahead of the WHO warning that the outbreak was spiraling out of control because they couldn’t get enough resources to stop it. The WHO downplayed their warnings. And the consequences have been dire.

And more than 400 of MSF/DWB health workers have been sickened or died b/c of their attempts to care for other stricken patients under the worst conditions imaginable.

Here in the US, if you get sick with Ebola, you’ll likely end up in a Level 1 trauma center facility with an isolation ward with negative air pressure and HEPA filters with UV protection for air handling, strict PPE protocols, and stringent controls and access to pretty much any medicine known or considered.

In Africa, in the heart of the outbreak, you might have one kind of heart medicine, aspirin, and other basics - all in short supply. They’re short on everything.

Freeper madness:
Freepers are belly-aching because Parlamentary Sergeant at Arms Kevin Vickers apparently used a 15 shot S&W pistol, a weapon prohibited for civilians in Canada, to stop a crazed gunman a couple of days ago.
It matters not at all to them that Mr. Vickers is a retired officer of the RCMP with many years of training and demonstrated proficiency , that he is still a law enforcement officer, and that he has perhaps the most important such posting in the country.
They are probably apoplectic that the Canadian army has tanks, artillery, and even automatic rifles when these are similarly denied to civilians.

If only Chuckie could be convinced to cover Navajo politics. He’d be so busy he couldn’t annoy anybody else.

Navajo council votes to remove language requirement, should have final decision Monday; Deschene says voters’ voices heard

After the Navajo Nation Council voted 11-10-1 to amend the tribe’s election code’s language requirements early Friday morning to allow voters to determine a candidate’s fluency, the fate of this year’s general election, originally scheduled for Nov. 4, is even more up in the air than it was Thursday.

If signed by the president the measure would apply retroactively, meaning it could still apply to the upcoming election, whenever it should happen.

Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly is meeting with lawyers this weekend in Albuquerque, according to Wallace Charlie, with the Navajo Nation Election Commission. Charlie said the commission hopes to have either a veto or signature from Shelly by Monday.

Charlie said the commission has also requested the Navajo Nation Attorney General’s Office give it legal advice on all the matters that have been brought by the commission and Supreme Court this week.

The Election Commission will meet again Monday at 9 a.m., and Charlie said the commission hopes it will have a decision about if the legislation will apply to the upcoming election or not then.

During Friday morning’s proceedings, council members argued that the Navajo law that establishes retroactive decisions cannot be applied in the middle of an election and should not apply, if passed, until the next election

329 The War TARDIS  Oct 24, 2014 5:51:26pm

Hey, that story with Honey Boo Boo?

It got worse.

Earlier today, TLC announced that it was canceling Here Comes Honey Boo Boo in the wake of rumors that Mama June was now dating an ex boyfriend who had just finished serving prison time for molesting an 8-year-old girl. According to TMZ, that 8-year-old girl was none other than Mama June’s daughter Anna, nicknamed “Chickadee.” Ugh.

TMZ reports that June had tried to hide her rekindled relationship with Mark McDaniel from her daughter (now an adult). But now, it appears, the jig is up.

Anna Cardwell — who is now 20 and married with a child — believed her mom earlier today that she was not dating the man who molested her. But we’re told Anna has now received a lot more info, and is now convinced June betrayed her by seeing McDaniel again.

Anna wants it known she’s the victim because it makes what her mom is doing all the more egregious. We’re told Anna feels her relationship with her mom has been destroyed, and the only way June can see her granddaughter is if McDaniel is nowhere to be seen.

re: #327 Stanley Seabola

One of the Dr. correspondent’s on CNN just talked about her. APPARENTLY, the oral temperature take was no fever. The strip on her head after she was stressed and freaked out from being stopped & detained showed a fever.

The Dr.’s are not too thrilled about the independent NJ/NY Governor’s decision.

Was it Nancy Synderman (Snyderman?)? She shouldn’t be on this beat anymore after her atrocious behavior when she was in self-quarantine.

They’re not the brightest stars in the firmament, you know.

But really—this is some filthy, selfish shit on June’s part. I would give her a choice—and no visits with me or her granddaughter until McDaniel is gone.

Wonder if DSS will intervene?

Who else could afford to finance it himself?

Cool. Looks like he used a heavy atmospheric suit instead of a gondola. Waiting on the FAI to accept the record.

I almost laughed, though, when he said he saw the different layers of the earth’s atmosphere, something he’d never seen before.

Have very many people? : )

We had the opposite problem around 1960. The Emergency Broadcast System of the day relied on pre-recorded tapes kept at each radio station. When they got the code authorization, the station was to drop programming and play the appropriate tape. During a drill, the HQ sent out the real go-to-war code (Hatefulness, Hatefulness). No one believed it, no station played the tape.

I think the more fascinating thing is that he did it without a gondola ride up in the balloon. He was strapped to the balloon directly, and there was nothing but him and his suit between him and his jump.

Ahhh the end of the workweek. So some music seems in order. I can’t find this version anywhere else…. But just seems appropriate on this nice Friday evening.

Just my opinion fwiw:
A deadly physical attack on the Canadian Parliament is a direct assault on the very concept of democracy and the rule of law. Someone who does this in any elected body needs to be shot down like a rabid dog.
Mr. Vickers and his colleagues can have any kind of gun they think they need as far as I am concerned.
I say this because it can happen in this country, indeed, it probably will.

It has.

This is why Congress was so pissed off at Clinton giving FALN clemency in ‘99.

(there was another shooting in the capitol more recently; Bill Frist was new then, he rendered aid until the EMT’s got there).

346 RealityBasedEbola  Oct 24, 2014 6:45:30pm

Gotta brag on myself a bit. Tomorrow the scuba club is doing a “Zombie Apocalypse” dive, (I’m Dr. Romero), and one of the stations is going to be an underwater zombie shooting range (with spearguns). I got tasked this evening to setup that station.

The shop owners (both very experienced divers and instructors) had gotten 2 of the styrofoam arrow backstops. The idea was that I would take them down to 20 feet, anchor them down, and stick the targets on them. They are about 2 foot high / wide and a foot+ deep. That works out to about 4 +cubic feet.

I asked, “and how do I get them down to the bottom?”, they said “no problem, you can handle it”. (love that confidence) I ran the numbers in my head, cubic foot of water appx 62#, I’m displacing 4 of them… lets see, going to need about 250 pounds of dead weight to get them to sink. Pointed that out, they agreed that “might” be a problem.

We came up with a couple of other things we could use, I’ll have plenty of time tomorrow to come up with a working solution. Probably use some sheets of 3/4 inch foam I’ve got lying around, make a back stop with that. The spear guns aren’t that powerful, and it won’t have to last too long.

Damn, it feels good to spot a problem that would have butt-bit us tomorrow.

The fact that dim jim got that story so quickly shows that this is a RWNJ meme in the making. It was called here!

351 RealityBasedEbola  Oct 24, 2014 6:53:29pm

It’s a quarry, somebody who was out there today said that it’s about 75 at the top layer, a thermocline about 40 feet drops to about 60, and at 90 it’s about 43 degrees. Three very pronounced layers, we’re going to be doing it in about 25 feet so it will be easy in just my wetsuit.

I got an oversized set of blue hospital scrubs that will fit over the wetsuit, so i can look “doctorish”

The BBC interviewed Sen. John Mica (R-whatever) today, and he naturally referred to the NYPD officers disposing their gloves in the public trash. He was using it as ammo for more fear mongering about how we aren’t doing enough, that everyone coming from West Africa who’s been in contact with ebola should be immediately quarantined for 21 days, etc., etc. The BBC reporter got a word in edgewise about over-reaction and while she was talking Mica was practically apoplectic at not being able to continue his stream of fear alarm murder death kill! 11ty!!

We aren’t doing enough, says he.
