I am still a classical liberal. I believe in individual liberty just as the founders did. Liberalism today is more in line with the early 20th century progressive ism of Roosevelt, Wilson and Roosevelt who put the state above the individual.
Then how can you support the GOP, which is against individual liberties?
It’s against the women’s liberty to control their bodies. It’s against the liberty of people marrying regardless of gender. It’s against the religious liberty of having any faith or none without the state pushing some other faith on you.

I’m not so sure about that - depending on what you mean by ground game. We who canvass can remind people to vote, give them sample ballots, tell them how to vote, remind again, offer rides, etc. - but we can’t make them want to vote.
We didn’t lose the Colorado Senate seat because we lacked a ground game. We lost because a lot of people chose not to vote, and the ones who did were in a surly mood.
Well speaking from Virginia. Two years ago when Kaine ran for the Senate. I saw volunteers in the neighborhood. Now granted Kaine was expected a much closer race than Warner had and it was a presidential year.

The late stages of pregnancy are a quirky thing, philosophically speaking (hence the limits in Roe v. Wade, etc.). But we know that a fetus cannot be a person before the 20th week. That is, before the cerebral cortex is developed. That’s simply a scientific fact. So your argument doesn’t apply before then.

From earlier today:
Turn-out of under-30 voters was “pathetic.”
Which is why I don’t spend much time listening when young people start to complain about elections. So few of them bother to take some time out of their day to do one of only two Constitutional duties burdened upon them.
Remember, turnout only measures against the registration base. What about all of those people who don’t even bother to register?
Last night in TX 2,541,476 voted for governor.
There are probably 19.4 million adults (18 and over) currently living in Texas.
So about 12.6% of the adult population voted.
So about 1 out of 13 adults in TX actually voted for Abbott.
This is what “democracy” means in America.

Douse the turkey liberally in extra virgin olive oil, season well with pepper and appropriate poultry spices and cook it UPSIDE DOWN for whatever hours per pound teh interweb food sites tell you.
This keeps the white meat nicely juicy, although you probably won’t be able to show off a Norman Rockwell painting style bird (I find they tend to just fall apart, but that helps you when it comes to just servng up a big platter of yummy turkey meat)
Don’t worry about shoving stuffing in the bird because that actually dries the bird out. Do a side dish of cornbread dressing or whatever. I can send you a delicious recipe for homemade cranberry and cherry sauce that is easy and fantastic to eat.

I don’t know. Maybe we’ll do a non-traditional Thanksgiving and I can get my turkey and stuffing some other time.

This is an argument in favor of grammatical inertia over principle. For your afternoon entertainment…my front page abstract of my senior thesis in history:
The Terror became the apotheosis of revolutionary desire for a radical utopian restructuring or renewal of society within the framework of war both within and without. Historians have split over the utilitarian necessity of the Terror insofar as how the implemented policies were actually mandatory to the survival of the state. Ultimately, Robespierre, both in his utopian obsession with societal virtue as well as his Manichean obsession with existential enemies engaged in conspiracies and plots, used the Terror to not only rid the radical revolutionary government of foreign and domestic enemies but also to remake or ‘regenerate’ society into a permanent virtuous revolution.

When someone babbles on about the definition of marriage, I like to point out these legal facts about marriage in the past in these United States:
* Women who married lost their separate person status under coverture laws. As in, women had no legal status separate from their husbands.
* Slaves were not permitted to marry because they were property, only 3/5ths a person (per the Constitution) and property just doesn’t get married. (I also like to note how Southern male slaveowners sexually used their female slaves and then sold their own blood children into slavery. That’s how much these guys cared about their own children. And they were oh so religious at least in name.)
* Of course we all know about Loving v. US (Supreme Court, 1967), which allowed for interracial marriage. Which, of course, had been a crime with jail time in certain states in a certain part of the country that had fought a civil war with the rest of the USA….
I don’t put up with any nonsense from people about the definition of marriage. It’s been redefined and redefined.

Feel much better now. In spite of the pundits labeling him “not contrite” (WTF?), I enjoyed Pres Obama’s statements, esp about ordinary people he meets being upbeat and hopeful in spite of their travails. His comments seemed sincere in his belief in the American people in spite of the slings and arrows many have sent his way.
I also enjoyed the little edge of defiance in outlining what he wants to get accomplished, even if he has to sign executive orders.

I saw someone earlier saying that only 12% of the young voted, and that blacks did not vote.
These statements are both false, and both the fault of bad communication from journalists.
White people over 45 outvoted their demographics BY FAR. And these people lean republican. Whites as a whole voted 60% Republican. They don’t break out age plus race plus vote, but it’s going to be higher than 60% for older whites, verifiable by the numbers.
This info pertains to US demographics overall, not only registered voters.

This is an argument in favor of grammatical inertia over principle. Your lexicon is outdated & arbitrary, and unless you have a problem with the word marrying being used to describe the joining of two ketchup bottles it’s not the definition that you’re actually bunged up about. It’s equality for gay people that upsets you.
It’s his loss of power. That upsets him.
Not long ago all it took was an accusation of ‘queer’ or ‘faggot’ and someone’s life was ruined. He and those like him can’t do that anymore and it pisses them off.

The other night I was invited out for a night with the boys. I told my wife that I would be home by midnight, “I promise!” Well, the hours passed and the drinks went down way too easily.
Around 3 a.m., a bit pissed, I headed for home. Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hallway started up and cuckooed three times. Quickly, realizing my wife would probably wake up, I cuckooed another nine times.
I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution, in order to escape a possible conflict with her. (Even when totally smashed… three cuckoos plus nine cuckoos totals twelve cuckoos MIDNIGHT!)
The next morning my wife asked me what time I got in. I told her ‘MIDNIGHT’. She didn’t seem pissed off in the least.
Whew, I got away with that one! Then she said, “We need a new cuckoo clock.”
When I asked her why, she said, “Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times, then said ‘oh shit.’ Cuckooed four more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another three times, laughed, cuckooed twice more, and then tripped over the coffee table and farted.”

Joni Ernst is such a liar. Last May, she was saying that she had “intel” that there were WMDs in Iraq and later tried to clarify that.
Now, she’s been saying she’s the first female combat veteran to serve in the Senate.
Ernst was never in combat, either. She was the commander of a transportation company in Kuwait for 14 mos, 2003-2004.

I was quoting stats from MSNBC, so there’s that. But—the figures are very close. I never said Blacks didn’t vote. I said 12% of those under age 30 voted, and 37% of people over 60, which would be a combo of 2 of your categories.
Where did you get those stats? No linky?
I wasn’t even talking about you, BTW. My comments were from downstairs. the 18 — 29 year olds were only 12% (or 13% according to the Post) of the vote. That is very different than saying only 12% of that age group voted. The TV (and some print) journalists aren’t good at math or stats.
The numbers come from the census on wiki and the Washington Post exit polls.

90-year old man arrested for feeding the homeless
Outside Stranahan Park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the homeless sit on the sidewalk. On Sunday afternoon, 90-year-old Arnold Abbott prepared some 300 lunches to give them — a way for him to “love thy neighbor,” he said. And about three meals into his giveaway, local police ordered him to stop, as he knew they would.
Bystanders shouted at officers: “Shame on you!”
“One of the police officers said, ‘Drop that plate right now,’ as if I were carrying a weapon,” he told WPLG-TV Local 10. It was essentially an act of civil disobedience. Abbott runs a nonprofit organization called Love Thy Neighbor. He has been feeding the homeless in Fort Lauderdale for more than 20 years and says he’s not going to stop now. “It’s man’s inhumanity to man is all it is.”
Abbott and two local pastors were arrested Sunday and charged with violating a new ordinance passed last month that restricts charitable groups from passing out food to homeless people in public. They face a $500 fine and up to 60 days in jail.
What the hell, Florida?

Yes. After close analysis of polls all season, and then analyzing against results today, I have decided that polling by phone no longer works. It’s not like they were off consistently — they were just wrong. We just don’t use our communication devices like we used to. It’s a whole new era. Most people do not answer their phones anymore, so who exactly are these people that are taking the polls? There are also issues with getting a representative sample in the coverage area. I think there will have to be some very new ideas put into use if pollsters are to have any success in the future.

Except that SNAP allows people to buy food that charities don’t often provide, although many try dutifully, and are dependent on local and chain groceries, along with individual donations. Many charities are given food that is often past sell dates, produce that is wilted, etc, and often the offerings are out of skew. Lots of canned goods, packaged products, but little really fresh things, and usually no dairy products. Many charities see themselves as subsidizing what SNAP allowances fall short of providing.

I know all that. I’m basically describing an ideal world, where charities are willing and able to provide the sort of assistance that government programs currently provide. Things like SNAP, etc. Obviously, in this non-perfect world, government programs supplement the good work occasionally done by charity, and both should be encouraged.

Jim Wright lays out the hard cold reality.
Conservatives’ entire message was one of doom and gloom and woe and bloody tears. The commies are coming for you! The terrorists are coming for you! The gays are coming for you! The gun grabbers and the job stealers and the Ebola is coming, oh yes they are, on a tide of filthy brown Spanish speaking pestilence surging across the undefended border and it’s coming for you! It’s coming for you and it’s going to rape your women and eat your children and murder your babies and Obama is doing nothing, nothing! to stop it! Clutch your guns and your bibles and be afraid, be very very afraid! Everything sucks, and it’s going to keep right on sucking and we suck but we suck a little less than they suck so suck it up and vote for us!
They won.
With that message.
Let me be brutally honest here: if you can’t beat that, if you can’t beat these dour pessimistic dimwitted fear-mongers, then you just don’t deserve to win.

I really hope people here click over to Jim Wright’s place because he’s really nailed it all down for you.
One more excerpt, and I hope it doesn’t piss him off. Maybe the Dems could replace the totally worthless Debbie Wasserman Schultz with Wright.
Rather than run away from their records, they should have embraced them, just as Obama did. The Affordable Care Act? You goddamned right I voted for it. It’s shitty. It’s a mess. It could be one hell of a lot better, but it’s a hell of a lot better than nothing. Which is what Republicans wanted for you, worse than nothing, their only plan was the rich get richer and you better not get sick. So, yeah, you bet I voted for it, for you, and here’s why, here’s how you and you and you and you and you benefit from it. Here’s how we could make it better. Here’s the lies the other side told, death panels, do you see any death panels, mother fucker? Well, do you? No you don’t, sit down and shut up and listen! Obama? You damned right I stand with him, I don’t abandon my friends just because the going gets hard and I won’t abandon you. Look here, healthcare reform, Wall Street reform, unemployment below 6%, war in Iraq over, war in Afghanistan over, Osama Bin Laden dead, industry thriving, banks recapitalized, stock market at record highs.
To those of you who think I’m being unkind to Wasserman Shultz, I give you this:
Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) on Tuesday morning repeated recent comments that her party would hold the Senate and pick up gubernatorial positions.
