A New Sound for Punch Brothers: “I Blew It Off’

A new song from the upcoming record by the Punch Brothers is a bit of a departure for them, with a drum track (possibly for the first time) and a “poppier” direction, but still pretty warped in a good way.

Punch Brothers perform “I Blew It Off” from their new album, to be released in early 2015 on Nonesuch Records. Visit http://punchbrothers.com for the recently announced North American tour and sign up for the e-mail list for news on the upcoming album.

Nice. A fuller sound for them shows they shine as a pop band too. These guys are just flat out good at whatever they do.

Glad to hear they have a new album due. Loved hearing them in Inside Llewyn Davis.

Smerconish came off as a condescending asshole. Why do they have to “wait for evidence” to protest the killing of an unarmed black teenager?? The mere fact that he was shot twice in the head and left on the street for over 4 hours is enough to protest, let alone the big fat cover-up the police are engaged in.

Do you think Bassem Masri comes off looking good here?

I read about this Masri and I am appalled. He seems to me to be a highly confrontational agitator, and in this situation that’s dangerous. The FBI needs to look into this one, because I could easily see him inciting a crowd to attack police. He might well be a Radical Islamist infiltrator.

Oh come on! Do you have any evidence for that at all, or is it pure biased speculation?

Yes, he sounds angry, like many others and they have reason to be. Personally I don’t think he is helpful, but neither are statements like yours.

re: #10 BeachDem

No, I Googled his name and found this article:

A crowd chants to officers, “Whose streets? Our streets. Our streets. Our streets.”

It was October 8, the night an off duty officer shot and killed Vonderett Myers Jr. Crowds surround officers who back away.

A man holding a cell phone says, ‘What the f*** you doing here bro, get the f*** out a here with your coward ass boys.’ It was Bassem Masri who said this as he streamed video that was live at the time. Masri yelled at an officer, ‘Coward straight pig out here bitch! You gotta go. Your life is in danger homie.’

People appear to feed off of his energy. Masri told an officer, ‘What happens when we take your gun?’ That officer then protects his gun. Another officer protecting his gun was answered with screams, ‘He has his hand on his gun!’

Then citizens surrounded him and chanted, ‘Shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot.’

At one point you can hear Masri tell officers, while pointing at each one, ‘I`m praying for your death and you death and your death and your death.’

I make no apology in saying “When someone named Bassem Masri tells police officers he praying for their deaths, then I’m going to be extremely hostile to Mr. Masri and I am certainly going to wonder aloud about his real motives.”

Read one of the most sickening articles about sexual assault on campus (the Rolling Stone exposé on endemic rape at the University of Virginia) and seeing pronouncements that certain Islamic protesters in Ferguson are worse than the cops in St. Louis County.

That man Masri isn’t black, or at least he doesn’t look ‘black’ to me. He looks much more like an Arab, though I could be wrong about that.

Got it. Pissed off obviously appearing black man with a strange name isn’t anywhere near as scary as a looks-kinda-Arab man with a strange name…

24 ObserverArt  Nov 22, 2014 4:50:55pm

The parallels of Ferguson and Kent State are very interesting. Almost like time hasn’t changed. Similar political rhetoric. Political and Police grandstanding in support of each other. Outside agitators. National Guard. Stuffy white people worried about their world changing. Generation gaps. Commies. Socialists. Different legal viewpoints. Burned buildings used for fodder.

Probably a good chance with all that we will get a similar outcome. And it will suck because we never learn.

I just watched the CNN interview of Masri. I can understand what DF is afraid of. Masri wouldn’t listen to the guy who was deferring to the police. He kept talking and not deferring to those who were obviously his betters. And how do we know the CNN anchor was his better? Because the anchor didn’t want to rock the boat. He wanted to wait for the facts.

But you know what? I will bet you that when the jury comes back and does not indict Wilson, the CNN guy will argue that the grand jury came to their decision and we must respect it. And that will feel good to DF, and he will go back into his comfortable world where blacks fighting for their rights are just disrupting things and they should just all calm down.
