That GOP Representative Who Compared Obama to Hitler? He’s Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Energy.

What war on science?
Wingnuts • Views: 28,571

Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas)Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas)Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas) is in the news after he was forced to apologize “to all those offended” by a tweet comparing President Obama to who else? Hitler.

And in light of the previous post in which Rand Paul and Lamar Smith risibly tried to claim the GOP isn’t anti-science, I’d like to point out that Rep. Weber has just been named as chairman of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee’s subcommittee on energy.

Every single person named today is a Republican, and all of them are hard core climate change deniers. For example, the chairman of the subcommittee on environment, Jim Bridenstine (R-Oklahoma), who flat out denies carbon dioxide has any effect on climate:

Q: Do you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?

A: No. The Earth’s climate has always varied substantially as demonstrated by pre-industrial human records and natural evidence. There is no doubt that human activity can change local conditions, but on a global scale natural processes including variations in solar output and ocean currents control climatic conditions. There is no credible scientific evidence that greenhouse gas atmospheric concentrations, including carbon dioxide, affect global climate. I oppose regulating greenhouse gases. Doing so will significantly increase energy prices and keep more people in poverty.

Yep, and it will be very interesting to watch what the response to all that crazy is going to be. That response may well foretell the next 20-30 years politically.

This country is either going to buy into the nuts and be nuts, or there will be a huge backlash and the TeaParty/Party of God/Arch Conservatives will be run out.

I’m counting on the younger population of this country (40 and younger) to learn from this and be the folks that turn back the nuts. I hope anyway. They will need to become very active politically.

Specific scientific research doesn’t have to have a specific direct benefit for the taxpayer (the probability is great that it will be of indirect benefit by being a stepping stone towards further scientific progress). Those who don’t understand this should have no business making any science-related decisions.

He’s probably hoping that the Democrats add on a jobs or infrastructure bill so that it wont suffer an immediate veto from the President. Of course, there’d have to be a reconciliation with the House version, which would lack whatever amendments are added.

Basic research is often beneficial in ways that can’t be specified up front.

Michael Faraday is visited by a delegation of government dignitaries. They are shown his electric motors and other demos. At least six Ukraine civilians killed when rocket hits bus

DONETSK (UKRAINE) (AFP) -
At least six Ukrainian civilians were killed and more than a dozen wounded on Tuesday when a long-range Grad rocket apparently fired by pro-Russian insurgents hit an intercity bus.

“Local police said the rocket appeared to have gone astray after being fired by the gunmen at a checkpoint set up by government soldiers on the main highway connecting the rebel stronghold of Donetsk with Ukraine’s southeastern coast on the Sea of Azov.

“Initial toll figures ranged between six and 10 people killed and at least a dozen injured.” More

The loons who are marinating in the wingnut-o-sphere are of course all right with all this crap, but they are a small, if vocal minority. Those of us on left-leaning blogs show each other these idiotic pronouncements and think that’s showing the public what’s going on. Problem is, we’re an even smaller and infinitely less vocal minority.

Believe me, 90% of the ordinary people I meet, if I mention any of this wingnut crap that the RWNJs are hyperventilating about, they are completely unaware of it, and quite frankly don’t believe me when I tell them about it. This American strategy of letting the nut jobs convict themselves out of their own mouths is a miserable, abject failure.

We have nothing like Charlie Hebdo to expose the insanity. This is why Americans can’t grasp what Charlie was up to. They print all these “racist” “hateful” cartoons—that must mean they agree with them!

No. They’re exposing to the populace what the Right is saying—often carrying some of the dog-whistles to their logical conclusion. Americans can’t even seem to understand that, so both ends of the political spectrum disapprove of their cartoons. Starting such a journal in the US would be a fool’s errand, I suppose*, but it’s the only thing that would get the vast bulk of the voting public to see what they’re voting for.

Did Russia Really Boost Its Birthrate by Promising New Mothers Prize Money and Refrigerators?

slate.com

(snip)

“In 2006, Vladimir Putin described population decline as the country’s “most urgent problem.” In 2007, the government introduced a program to pay $11,000 to mothers who have more than one child. That same year, the AP reported on families being given days off from work (and potentially winning “money, cars, refrigerators, and other prizes”) in exchange for making babies. In 2011, Putin announced an additional $53 billion in government expenditures to boost the birthrate. And on a darker note, Putin has used the population crisis as a justification for the government’s hostility to homosexuality.

“But here’s the thing: The Russian population isn’t shrinking anymore. In fact, in 2009 it started slowly growing, largely due to migration and decreasing mortality. In 2012, the number of births exceeded the number of deaths for the first time since the fall of the Soviet Union, causing Putin to smirk, “Our women know what to do, and when.” Though still low, Russia’s fertility rate of 1.7 children per women is higher than the EU average.” More

Majdanek’s liberation was highly publicized, and that was one of the first ones. Wikipedia page on Auschwitz says that the lack of publicity about its liberation was a combination of factors; one of a series of camps already liberated, conference at Yalta going on at that time, Soviet’s downplaying the plight of the Jews. And I expect that due to destruction of records and buildings and removal of a lot of the prisoners it might not have been clear what the extent and importance of the site was.
