Andrew Sullivan Says He’s Quitting Blogging

So long, no thanks for the eugenics

Andrew Sullivan says he’s going to quit blogging: A Note to My Readers.

I don’t have much to say about this, because to be honest I was not a fan of Mr. Sullivan and I haven’t paid much attention to his writing for years. I didn’t like his apologia for the absolutely horrible Ron and Rand Paul, his defense of the crypto-racist pseudo-scientific “The Bell Curve” and discredited eugenics theories, or his advocacy of conspiracy theories about Sarah Palin’s pregnancy. I could list a lot more reasons, but I think I’ll just leave it there — with the note that I seriously doubt this is really the end of Sullivan’s blogging.

Now get ready for a deluge of mainstream journalism think pieces about THE DEATH OF BLOGGING. As if.

Ayep, one of the things that made me write off Sully back in the day was how he was a major booster for Dubya…right up until he realized that the “compassionate conservative” was as anti-gay as the rest of his party.

You’re not going to see very many African Americans praising Andrew Sullivan.

11 piratedan  Jan 28, 2015 11:02:27am

and thus another wafer thin veneer of the polite Conservativism is stripped from the ugly face of what is quickly becoming a quite scary construct of narcissistic mammon worshipers, ammo fetishists and fanatical true believers in some Aryan supreme entity as the components of the Right.

Sometimes I fear for our future because these fuckers are as scary up close and personal as they are from afar.

Which is suspiciously like a few other notorious notables, like CCJ and Glenn Greenwald, although Greenwald and Sullivan at least had command of the English language, and could even string a fact or two together (though I may be being a bit charitable on the facts and Greenwald).

He is in a hospital in London right now because he had a very sharp headache while landing, plus nearly passed out after deplaning and his blood pressure was very low.

Probably related to the sinus congestion he was flying with, but since he described it as his worst headache ever they are taking it seriously and doing the right things.

Meanwhile, in Dresden, Germany, PEGIDA seems to be falling apart:

German anti-Islam movement PEGIDA looked in disarray on Wednesday, losing its second leader in a week when Kathrin Oertel, who took over after the founder quit for posing as Hitler, also resigned, and the group cancelled its next rally.

The Dresden-based group, whose weekly marches in the city have rattled the German political establishment, announced on its Facebook page that Oertel and another board member were stepping down, due to threats, hostility and media hounding.

Oertel, a 37-year-old mother-of-three became PEGIDA’s national figurehead after founder Lutz Bachmann resigned a week ago on news that he was subject to official investigations.

PEGIDA said Oertel had quit “due to the massive hostility, threats and career disadvantages”, adding: “Even the strongest of women has to take time out when at night photographers and other strange figures are sneaking around outside her house.”

Another board member faced massive problems because his business had lost public contracts, PEGIDA said, adding its cause remained “good and just”. German Chancellor Angela Merkel had warned people not to be manipulated by the group, cautioning some of its members have “hatred in their hearts”.

At the end of the article, this caught my eye:

PEGIDA’s woes could also spell trouble for the eurosceptic Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which has faced internal division after some of its members made overtures to the group.

Bless his boss, who arrived and handed my husband his cell phone so we were able to talk briefly. He sounded tired and congested, both of which are to be expected since he hasn’t slept and was developing a sinus infection.

The CT came back normal, but they are doing a lumbar puncture and keeping him overnight as the last check. Hopefully the meetings he went over there for can be rescheduled. He’s feeling fine enough to be freaking out about how much this all will cost (it looks like we will owe just on the overnight hospitalization, from what I have been able to find, and that should be reasonable).

So now I get to research the aftereffects of a lumbar puncture and e-mail him some info about what to expect so that he doesn’t look for himself and freak out more.

It wouldn’t be stupid if people were looking at the world, not just their own neighborhood. A sustained run of cold winters in the majority of the world would be a decent indicator that maybe the warming was temporary.
Trust me, here in the SF Bay Area we are not shoveling snow. We are out starting to work in our gardens because it is in the upper 60s almost every day. It’s warm and it’s dry. FLT is a sub-case of the modularity theorem, for which Andrew Wiles provided a partial solution for semistable elliptic curves. Others have already completed the proofs for all cases of the modularity theorem, so it’s a done deal.

Governor Dropout showered us with wisdom on his chosen RWNJ mouthpiece today.

Scott Walker says UW faculty should be ‘teaching more classes and doing more work’

Faculty and staff in the University of Wisconsin System should be “teaching more classes and doing more work,” Gov. Scott Walker said during an interview Wednesday morning with a Milwaukee conservative radio talk show host.

During back to back interviews with radio talk show hosts Charlie Sykes and Jay Weber, Walker discussed how a new arena for the Milwaukee Bucks would be funded, his preparations to run for president, and his state budget proposal that would cut $300 million in funding over two years for the UW System while granting new flexibilities in how the UW System does business.

Sykes asked how listeners could be sure the proposed $300 million in budget cuts “won’t damage the quality of education.”

Walker gave a lengthy answer, noting former Gov. James Doyle made similar size cuts to the UW System, though Doyle’s cuts were not coupled with a tuition freeze. He said the UW would have to be “more effective, efficient.”

Walker then told Sykes:

“I think you were right, your comments today on Right Wisconsin, that maybe it’s time for faculty and staff to start thinking about teaching more classes and doing more work. And this authority frees up the UW administration to make those sorts of requests, which I think are needed not only here but across the country.”

White displacement?

As in geographically displaced, culturally displaced, demographically displaced?

/

So white replacement would be to ship them all back to Europe?

Is it anything like “white flight”?

He’s been moved for the night. The Internet doesn’t work in the new ward. I have a phone number for the nurse’s station but I am entirely unclear on the etiquette of calling a nurse’s station. Also, sleep would be a good thing for him, and he still has to have the lumbar puncture.

I have only priced flights to Heathrow once today. I figure I am doing ok.

His boss was going to see about getting him a phone in the morning. He now has some cash, at least (thanks to his boss again).

But this:
1887 - In a snowstorm at Fort Keogh, Montana, the world’s largest snowflakes are reported, 15 inches (38 cm) wide and 8 inches (20 cm) thick.

That is not a snowflake

Um, I’m guessing they measured them after pulling them from the bodies of those they hit.

re: #138 klystron

Bless his boss, who arrived and handed my husband his cell phone so we were able to talk briefly. He sounded tired and congested, both of which are to be expected since he hasn’t slept and was developing a sinus infection.

The CT came back normal, but they are doing a lumbar puncture and keeping him overnight as the last check. Hopefully the meetings he went over there for can be rescheduled. He’s feeling fine enough to be freaking out about how much this all will cost (it looks like we will owe just on the overnight hospitalization, from what I have been able to find, and that should be reasonable).

It should be.

So now I get to research the aftereffects of a lumbar puncture and e-mail him some info about what to expect so that he doesn’t look for himself and freak out more.

My wife was visiting recently and we had to go to the emergency room because of really severe chest pains. Since she’s still an American citizen she wasn’t covered under Ontario’s health insurance. (OHIP)

The bill for everything was less than $900.

That whole article was just painful to read. More and more, the Huckster comes off like Greg Stillson, holier-than-thou politician and main villain from King’s The Dead Zone.

And again: I’m so sick of people claiming “real” Americans only live in the South and Midwest. Fuck them.

Hey, I’m a “real” American that just happens to live in the South… :-(

Okay, I’ll take the unpopular position around here and say that I really like Sullivan. Even when I disagree with him (not infrequently), I find him bold and I like his willingness to give voice to a wide range of opinions from all quarters. His commitment to putting dialogue and debate at the forefront — ahead of ideology or tribalism — is a much-needed trait these days.

I also think the “racism” charge against him is lazy and undeserved, despite his poor decision to give credence to the arguments of The Bell Curve. While there are many white people out there who pretend to be about “just asking questions” when they are really just racist, that does not fit Sullivan at all. In his case, I think he really is just that committed to ideas, wherever they might lead him.

That said, sometimes he could be a real drama queen…

Thanks, I was a fan too. Stopped reading his blog last summer, for some of the reasons other posts brought up earlier. I did like his personal, well expressed, varied and often interesting blogging.
