Brian Williams Announces Hiatus From NBC Nightly News for “Several Days”

Here’s the statement from Brian Williams at NBC:

In the midst of a career spent covering and consuming news, it has become painfully apparent to me that I am presently too much a part of the news, due to my actions.

As Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News, I have decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days, and Lester Holt has kindly agreed to sit in for me to allow us to adequately deal with this issue. Upon my return, I will continue my career-long effort to be worthy of the trust of those who place their trust in us.

Does anyone still watch the evening news? It as been decades since I have.

2 Charles Johnson  Feb 7, 2015 1:26:07pm

I almost never watch it myself.

I like Bri-Wi. I find him very entertaining when he is away from the desk. Jimmy Fallon really puts him to work.

And yet on Faux Noise they can deliberately lie their asses off 24/7 and…nothing. LIE-BRUL MEDIA!!

I watch the evening news but CBS because I can’t stand Williams and his flipppantly dudebro cozy cute way of delivering the news.

Who waits until evening to get news? It’s pointless apart from the old boomers. The evening news has been obsolete since 24hr news. Now we got the blogs, twitter, SMS. Who needs it?

Lester Holt lied when he said that he wished that I had a nice day

Yeah, speaking as an old boomer: Network news is really aimed at a vanishing demographic—old farts who have neither switched over to Fox News or turned into PBS totebaggers. I don’t know how they stay in business, but I gave them up when Walter Cronkite retired, to tell you the truth.

It is still a good compilation of news. Cable news wont give you a 30 summary. I’m in my 40s and also listen to BBC News, NPR, local news and cable news. Each have their own strengths and I learn different stuff from each one.

I don’t see the network news much but b.d. has a good point about the 30 minute compilation. Other news outlets may cover one story for almost an hour.

Well, it’s like second level wingnut welfare. Imagine if all you have to do is scour the internet and write stuff that will make people believe you enough to throw money at you.

Edit: The requirement to be accurate is now your taken seriously by the mainstream media. Once that’s accomplished, anything you say will be first taken as truth.

33 OhNoZombies!  Feb 7, 2015 1:59:23pm

Since weve gotten rid of cable/satellite and started streaming most things, all we have via antenna are the local channels, 7000 channels with Earnest Angsley, and PBS.
So if I want to take a peek at what’s going on w/o going online, or investing too much time, NBC is what I choose.
I find Brian Williams to be the least annoying anchor.

An African American with as much (or more) broadcast experience as Williams—both started in 1981, with Holt in NYC for WCSB-TV (he was w/CBS for 19 yrs) and Williams at KOAM-TV in Pittsburg, KS.

If I understood what I heard on NPR correctly (not necessarily so!), the story evolved from 2003 on, so that he didn’t get this specific until just recently. They played excerpts of him telling the same basic story about five times over that period of time.

Does anyone still watch the evening news? It as been decades since I have.

I happened to have ESPN radio on in my car yesterday afternoon and Dan Le Batard was on doing an interview with Larry King.

King was giving viewer numbers for some of the big nightly news and I think he had NBC around 6 million. I think CBS might have been higher, FOX a tad lower. Not very big numbers.

King said what I’ve been thinking…they need the numbers for the bucks, so the news will never be the same. He made mention of Walter Cronkite. He said the nation will never have another Walter Cronkite because of the market and news has changed. Sad.

By the way, King said he thought Williams should be given a few days off. Le Batard and his sidekick wanted his head.

I agree. As I hinted yesterday, people are acting like Williams called them up individually and lied to them.

I don’t think this mention was even a part of his job at NBC as the head news dude. He said it at a gathering of vets or something. (Gonna go back and look, it’s all getting foggy facts wise with all the push and pull.)

It is true that you’d have to displace 31% more seawater to get the same effect as a sensory deprivation tank. I assume there is a law of diminishing returns at play because of the contour of the human body, i.e. that the widest part of the body is already submerged at the 10.5 inch depth necessary to achieve full floatation plus margin. So the depth necessary is probably somewhere between 16 and 18 inches, definitely not greater than the minimum two feet visible in the photograph @jlangdale tweeted.

Sometimes it’s just impossible to maintain the terminological purity required in some milieus. I used to comment off and on over at Pharyngula, but despite the fact that I agreed with the consensus over there almost completely, I just could not purify myself to the extent necessary.

For example, no matter how egregious the positions or actions of some asshole may be, you’re not allowed to call them “stupid” or “crazy” because this creates “splash damage”, somehow harming people with actual mental challenges.

Well, I live in a country currently being destroyed by stupid and crazy people, so it doesn’t look like I’m going to stop calling stupid people stupid or crazy people crazy anytime in the foreseeable future. So, since I can’t abide by the ground rules, I don’t hang out there any more.

Presumably if I violate some deeply-held principles here, someone will let me know.

My sister-in-law is in the hospital awaiting surgery scheduled for Monday (they postponed it from originally on Friday). She’s had terrible diabetes since childhood. 5 months ago she had a heart attack and they found some blockage which they opened with a stent. While monitoring her after the stent surgery they found uterine cancer. They were going to hold off on removing the cancer because it looked like it was slow moving but that isn’t the case. The stent is new and surgery is going to be risky.
The family has been at our house for the last few days for support, but they went home today. We are all pretty nervous and my wife is expecting the worst but I have hope. She is in the best hospital in the state and she’s a little fighter. I have a little PC station here at the house for her so she can play her puzzles when she comes over. She makes me read to her, the posts here that make me LOL . Hopefully she’ll be back at her puzzle station soon.

So basically all that matters is the specific gravity of the sea water that flooded New Orleans was enough to float the bulk of the average human body. People usually die, even drown, with air trapped in the lungs, if they’re face down in the water then that air isn’t going to get expelled even after death. The little bit of water that gets pulled into the trachea causes a panic and the muscles seize up. This is frequently what causes the actual death in drowning, sometimes even when the person gets out of the water. It’s called “dry drowning.” Denser parts of the body may drag, but as long as the body is less dense overall the bulk of the weight will be lifted and the body will be properly termed to be “floating.”

It’s kind of gruesome, but y’know, science.
