I think that the establishment types might if Carson (or any other high-profile minority/women GOPers) isn’t at the top of the ticket, just as long as there’s an old, white guy heading it up (see: McCain/Palin 2006)

Went there once, 25 years or more ago, with my brother and SIL, who subsequently moved to the Big Island, and have since retired there.
We liked the Hilo side - very laid back, small-townish but welcoming in a way small towns generally aren’t. Rains a lot, but you don’t care, because the sun will come out in a bit and dry you off. Very lush and green. Not very touristy. The volcano was cooler than I could have imagined, and lava is the weirdest stuff on earth.
Kona - Touristy. Dry except where the resorts are. Not as much fun as Hilo by a damned site considerable distance (realized I don’t know how to spell the ‘site’ in that phrase).
Maui - Also touristy, but for some reason more enjoyable than Kona.
Honolulu - all we saw was the airport, the last time for about 10 minutes literally running from the island hopper to the plane back to SFO.

Where is your evidence that Lindsey Graham has ever been normal? (He’s one of my pathetic senators—they don’t DO normal down here in SC.)
The only normal thing he’s ever done is stick to his commitment to allow judicial nominees to come to a full vote, and not to vote against them in committee.

Pro Tip: It’s REALLY easy to go overboard on the soap with the carpet steam cleaner. Then you spend the rest of the evening trying to get the foam back up. Err on the side of caution when you hit the button, give it a few passes back and forth, and then, and only then, if needed, hit the button again.

Carson is a bit like Carly Fiorina. No real chance of getting the nod, or even being on the ticket, but useful in order to diversify the look of the GOP, until they drop out of the race, which will be early in both cases.
Here’s the thing: neither has any experience in elective office. In modern times, that’s pretty much a disqualifier if you’re running for prez. Furthermore, Carson is a loose cannon whose words will get him in trouble. He’s in way over his head discussing policy, domestic or foreign. He’ll spend more time defending his latest dumbass comment than he will putting forth any kind of message.
Similarly, Fiorina is in over her head, but a woman is needed at this stage just for optics. If Hillary is the Dem frontrunner, and the GOP has NO women even running, well that doesn’t look so great.

Steller: Tucson judge pretends gay marriage isn't real http://t.co/ZlHQBl3sy0— Arizona Daily Star (@TucsonStar) March 4, 2015
Same-sex marriage is legal in almost all of Arizona — but maybe not in Courtroom 680 at Pima County Superior Court.
Time has stood still there since Oct. 17, the day a federal court ruling struck down relevant state laws and same-sex marriages began in Arizona. But four months later, the judge who occupies Courtroom 680, Sean Brearcliffe, seems to defy their existence.
On Feb. 17, Brearcliffe ruled that Tucsonan Martha A. Morris, 67, and her estranged wife, Vicki M. Sullivan, 64, now of Maine, could not be divorced

My morning excitement here was visiting the dentist — the first time for any dental work in China. Easy peasy, as it turned out. I lost a filling and the tooth looked cracked to me, so I was fearing the worst — lots of drilling and grinding for a cap. All that worry for nothing. It just needed a new filling. So now I have a temp filling and go back next week for the real one.
Cost: 320 RMB or about $50.

I have to say, I have been reading through your China Chronicles and it is fascinating. :)
We have a few years where we could let the retirement savings build themselves and work for living expenses and I admit it has sort of made me thoughtful.
Because my current plan has gone so well. <— sarcasm.
Thanks! It’s nice to know someone besides my immediate family is reading them. :-D
I consider what I’m doing semi-retirement, because in terms of time spent in the classroom, it’s a P/T job. The rest of the time I can spend at home or wherever to prep the classes. And I get two really long vacays a year.

To be honest, I had my doubts, but the dentist seemed very capable. And I was the only patient there, so he could take his time.
They post their prices in the lobby. X-rays are less than $10. Whitening is pricey, at around $500.
I’ve heard the place to go for major dental work is Thailand.

Normally there are two dressed for the game (main and back-up). The main left after a hit in the first period, back-up came on. Back-up got injured in the third, leaving the team scrambling to try and figure out what to do next.
Main is back in (this is the FLA/TOR game with three minutes left).

Good evening, all. I avoided the political excitement of the day by spending a good bit of the time replacing parts of my drip irrigation system. More fun, games, and probably trips to the hardware store are planned for tomorrow, but I am doing it right. I’m taking out the old drip lines and emitters and putting in new, not just tacking new stuff on to the old.
(Of course, much of the old stuff tacked on to the even older stuff was done by, umm, me in the first place.)
We’re obviously not going to have a lot of water to work with this summer, so I want to do things up right. That includes getting appropriately stiff and sore from all the stoop labor…

California Lawyer introduces “Sodomite Supression” act
A lawyer in California has submitted a ballot initiative with the state Department of Justice calling for the death of anyone who engages in sodomy in the state, the San Diego Gay & Lesbian News reports.
The proposal by Matt McLaughlin, who lists his address in Huntington Beach, was received by the initiative coordinator at the Office of the Attorney General on Feb. 26. Enclosed was a $200 check and the complete text of his “Sodomite Suppression Act.” The act outlines seven measures relating to those who engage in same-sex sodomy, “a monstrous evil that Almighty God, giver of freedom and liberty, commands us to suppress on pain of our utter destruction even as he overthrew Sodom and Gomorrha.”
McLaughlin recommends punishment by death, even though a judge ruled that California’s death penalty is unconstitutional last June:
Seeing that it is better that offenders should die rather than that all of us should be killed by God’s just wrath against us for the folly of tolerating-wickedness in our midst, the People of California wisely command, in the fear of God, that any person who willingly touches another person of the same gender for purposes of sexual gratification be put to death by bullets to the head or by any other convenient method.
What the fuck is wrong with these people?

A Language That Makes You Provide Evidence
“…Linguist David Fleck, at Rice University, wrote his doctoral thesis on the grammar of Matses. He says that what distinguishes Matses from other languages that require speakers to give evidence for what they are saying is that Matses has one set of verb endings for the source of the knowledge and another, separate way of conveying how true, or valid the information is, and how certain they are about it. Interestingly, there is no way of denoting that a piece of information is hearsay, myth, or history. Instead, speakers impart this kind of information as a quote, or else as being information that was inferred within the recent past.”
