How many more of these need to happen before people realize that this is a big problem in our society? Maybe if some prominent white conservative’s kid got killed unjustly by the police. Sorry for sounding so harsh but I think for many in white America, they don’t see this as a problem because it’s not their community that this is happening to.

As I have mentioned several times, there is widespread resentment of police overreach and bullying on the political right too. There would be hell to pay if these fed up conservatives ever combined forces with the similarly angry folk in minority communities.

Rush Limbaugh: Baltimore Is Getting the 'Benghazi' Treatment http://t.co/wpoK4wO9Ed (AUDIO) pic.twitter.com/pCe050ds34— Mediaite (@Mediaite) April 27, 2015
Limbaugh brought his commentary to the next level by making a somehow inevitable Benghazi analogy. “Baltimore is getting the Ambassador Stevens treatment in Benghazi, and that, of course, is pioneered by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama,” the host declared. “So Baltimore, like our ambassador in Libya, was left unprotected and undefended, and those who wished to destroy were given space to do it because on balance — and that’s what this is all about, she said — on balance that’s the safest way to go.”
Just to be clear, in this analogy, the city of Baltimore is Ambassador Chris Stevens and the three other Americans who died in Benghazi in 2012 and the protesters angry over the death of Freddie Gray are the terrorists.

This police crap and resultant protests is not going to change until enough white people grow sick of it and start communicating to all politicians and police departments they aren’t going to stand for it anymore.
I am not sure what it will take to reach that state as I fear too many white people don’t give a shit and in a way buy the reporting. And as seen above by the lazy use of the word suspect for Freddie Gray by CNN, they don’t seem to care enough to even spend time to use the proper/better words. Much of the American right did embrace Hitler. Look at Lindbergh’s prewar activities and why he was kept in the South Pacific during the War.
A true point, yes. And as much as they hated FDR, it would have been even worse if we had faced Hilter with Obama as president. I can just see them praising Hitler like many of them praise Putin now.

I know it won’t happen now. My point is if a single prominent one had say called him out in the mid 90’s perhaps he would be just another right wing kook rather than someone who the Missouri GOP decided was worthy of a bust in the Missouri capitol and someone that is able to push GOP politicians around. Sorry I wasn’t more clear. I meant someone should have called out Rush years ago when he was saying toxic shit like calling a teenaged Chelsea Clinton a dog.
I don’t think a GOPer going against Limbaugh could have happened in the 90s either. Even then, Limbaugh was the bigoted voice of the GOP base, and GOPers were either crazy themselves or well aware of the need to pander to the crazies.

Yeah I sadly think you are right. Limbaugh basically was a national voice of what Lee Atwater was doing for years. Really, I see conservatives cry about how liberals call them racist. Well a non racist ideology wouldn’t have let Limbaugh build up what he did. It’s their own damn fault is my point that they’re seen as racists by the left. As far as I’m concerned, the GOP is essentially racist until it at least: 1) utterly repudiates the southern strategy and makes it clear in word and in deed that the party will no longer pander to or tolerate white resentment; and 2) completely ends its voter fraud nonsense and admits on the record its purpose of depressing turnout in D-leaning groups.
Tough, but fair.

Police did not instigate these riots? How do you come to that conclusion? Riot police out in force before riots (eerily similar to Ferguson), escalated actions, rocks thrown, tear gas tossed, injuries reported, etc.
Riot police spraying pepper spray from armored cars.
All while local official shut down mass transit in the area, leaving those who want nothing to do with any violence stuck in the area that cops purposely try to isolate.
At same time, cops attempt to justify their actions by claiming that various gangs would work together (even though those same gangs - Bloods and Crips - would be at their throats any other time - and why would those same gangs attack and kill cops because that would bring down a whole new level of crackdown that those gangs would avoid at all costs.

Yeah, not seeing much from the Maryland news media about the shut down transportation.

182 | HappyWarrior Apr 27, 2015 2:34:01pm |
You know, I don’t condone violence nor rioting but at the same time. How many deaths like Freddie’s have to happen before the cops that kill young men like him are not only put on trial for their crimes but also not returned to policing the streets. It’s easy to say “Oh don’t resist the police.” Maybe resistance is the difference between life and death. The people who I have observed condemning the protesters in situations like this the most are people who would never get scapegoated by the police because of their skin color and or socio-economic background.

Tell me again how police are the friend and protector of practically everybody. Are there good cops? Yes. But what you fail to recognize is that there are a LOT of bad cops as well.

230 | Shiplord Kirel Apr 27, 2015 3:04:58pm |
The culture of the police profession is the real problem. It is profoundly authoritarian and violent, built on force and intimidation alone. They are oblivious to public anger, because public anger, the helpless rage of the powerless “sheep” is a sign of the cops’ own power and dominance.
This culture has changed beyond any recognition since I was a desert cop in California over 30 years ago. If present-day police can’t silence or intimidate critics (always their first response) their next recourse is to whine that the civilian critic just cannot imagine what it is like to cope with the stress, the violence, and the truly rotten people and situations they encounter.
Well, I do know what it is like—— to go up to a darkened trailer near Barstow to arrest a drug crazed biker for murdering his girlfriend, to find four dead children in the back of a smashed van, and so on. It is a tough job, to be sure, but that is no excuse to violate your mandate and your oath by using your authority to abuse the very people who gave you that authority in the first place.
I will not deny that abuses occurred back in the day, but we at least remembered who we worked for and that we were supposed to be a force for good in the community, and not a superior class with a special set of rules and answerable to no one.

A big problem in this country is police officers are seldom even indicted let alone convicted for crimes against citizenry. I am not sure what the solution ought to be but I do think DoJ needs to be monitoring police departments with a big eye. I also think we need less prosecutors like Robert McCullouch who see themselves as an extension of the police department and their members rather than being what they are and were meant to be and that’s representative of the people. We need to have video cameras on police officers too. I also think we need better training of police officers as well so we have less individuals who think deadly force is the first answer. There was no reason that Freddie Gray had to die.

What accountability are you talking about? In order for a cop to even get charged, there has to be video of him literally shooting an unarmed suspect in the back (Tulsa, Charleston, Fruitvale Station Oakland). Otherwise the benefit of the doubt is always given to the police, as we’ve seen time and time again.
Sure, most cops are decent people. But the institutions they serve are often seriously fucked up. Riots like these don’t occur in a vacuum; people don’t just riot for no reason. And if you look back historically at similar events (riots in Watts, Detroit, LA, Ferguson, etc.), there’s usually a corrupt dysfunctional police force involved.

Of course. And in wealthier white areas, they’re able to get the schools their kids go to upgraded, since they have the power of money, and many are degreed professionals, so they demand them.
It’s a dilemma, of course. When looking for houses, I’m looking at older areas in a town not too far from here (which we could afford) where the schools in town are rated A+, away from the really prices areas near the lake, but my grandson, who isn’t smart enough yet to know much about bad schools, is looking in a rural area where schools are rated C or even below. 383 | CBGB Apr 27, 2015 4:51:27pm |
One note regarding the National Guard is that they often have a more calming influence on these kind of event than it might first seem. They are more separated from the local tensions, and bring far, far more professionalism to an immensely shitty task than local cops do, especially when what we might be looking at is a police riot. Not a perfect rule to be sure, but I’m thinking along the lines of ‘68 Chicago.

I suppose it is progress when an apparently unlawful killing of a black man by the police is buried by evidence spoiling and/or official riot incitement. After all, in earlier decades, the whole town would turn out for a lynching, picnic baskets and all, and nobody gave any thought at all as to whether this was legal or not.
However, too much remains to be done, and it is most unhelpful that about half the country wants to undo what progress has been made.

When the mayor and the one councilman from Baltimore said they were very upset about thugs taking the law into their own hands I was hoping they were finally talking about the police.
No one is going to advance out of this mess until America wakes up and takes some of the police activities and makes them as much if not more of the problem than rioters.
Americans like to fix problems by getting to the root of the problem. How much more does everyone need to see what the root of the problem is? Cause and effect.
If young people of color are so damn prone to rioting as the media, police and politicians want to paint it, why has there been very little of this kind of civic unrest until we started this round of policing problems? Actually, since Trayvon martin this has ramped up to where it really is getting unbearable. I talked the other day with Decatur Deb about the rising pressure.
A little more just popped out today. Sadly. And there will be more until the cause is addressed.>

I believe he is probably referring to this. Which seems more like she was answering a question and said something in-artfully. I think what she was trying to say was that they were trying to give the protesters the space to protest and in so doing inadvertently allowed space for those who wanted to destroy.

“I made it very clear that I work with the police and instructed them to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech,” Rawlings-Blake said. “It’s a very delicate balancing act. Because while we try to make sure that they were protected from the cars and other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well. And we worked very hard to keep that balance and to put ourselves in the best position to de-escalate.”
She’s clearly saying that creating the “space to destroy” was an unintentional side effect of trying to facilitate free speech. Chuck and his followers are fucking idiots who can’t parse plain English very well.
