Lindsey Graham Says He’ll Have a “Rotating First Lady”

Spinning

Lindsey Graham says being a bachelor is really no impediment to getting elected President, and he even has a great plan to handle that uncomfortable situation when people ask, “But where’s your First Lady?” Lindsey Graham Says He’ll Have a ‘Rotating First Lady’.

“I’ve got a lot of friends. We’ll have a rotating first lady,” Graham, who has never married, recently told the Daily Mail Online.

During the interview, Graham also said his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, could fill the spot. Nordone, who is married and has two children, did play an important role at Graham’s campaign announcement this month by introducing her brother, sharing how he helped take care of her after the two lost both of their parents at a young age.

The jokes. They write themselves.

I’m reasonably sure any plan Lindsey has to cover the situation will never be put to the test.

That’s possibly one of the weirdest euphemisms I’ve ever heard someone use, and I’ve heard a lot of weird ones.

….that IS a euphemism, right?

It would make for an interesting social arrangement.

But this does bring up a serious issue: It seems being single disqualifies one for being President.

Yeah, way back when, we had a batchelor President, but in the 20th century that hasn’t happened.

It is interesting to think about. I can’t think of too many successful single politicians or really that many divorcees. Reagan comes to mind with the latter but he had been divorced for nearly 30 years when he ran for president.

I think it extends beyond that, with all the media attention payed to our presidents, much of “middle america” wants them to also represent the ideal family, so it’s not just being married, but also having multiple kids, a dog, and some storybook life.

Yeah I think you’re right about that. Religion plays a similar role. I remember reading that Teddy Roosevelt tried unsuccessfully to get Taft, a non-religious guy to give up his Sunday hobby of golfing and Taft wouldn’t do it.

Historians have commonly used the term “White House hostess” for women who performed the First Lady’s social duties for an unmarried president. More recently, they have been considered as First Ladies in their own right, and are listed as such.

James Buchanan recruited his niece, the very talented Harriet Lane, to act as official hostess while he was ambassador to Great Britain. She stayed on as First Lady when he became President. By most accounts, the country would have been better off if she had taken over his duties as well.

Buchanan was the only president who never married, but several others have been single for at least part of their terms.

Chester Arthur, a widower, was single throughout his term. His sister, Mary Arthur McElroy, served as First Lady during his term.

Grover Cleveland, also widowed, married midway through his first term. His sister, Rose Cleveland, served as First Lady in the meantime.

Woodrow Wilson’s first wife, Ellen Axson Wilson, died during his first term. Their daughter, Margaret Wilson, was officially White House hostess and therefore First Lady, until Wilson re-married about a year later.

Woodrow Wilson was the last President who was single at any point during his term. Cleveland was the last to be elected while single.

Well, if he’s gay or even asexual (don’t really care either way), he’s consistently supported a ban on gay marriage.

It appears that the first three individuals diagnosed had received at least one dose of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, Vander Straten said. However, the mumps portion of the vaccine is estimated to be only about 88% effective - it’s the “weak sister” of the three, as Paul Offit, professor of pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, told me during the NHL mumps outbreak last fall.

72 freetoken  Jun 9, 2015 2:43:42pm

Mumps vaccinations are not only a “weak sister” but as a reminder to everyone that a single childhood vaccination may be insufficient for some diseases, espeically as the person ages.

4 New Mumps Cases Diagnosed University of Texas at Austin

3 Vaxed, 1 unknown = 75-100% vax fail

I’m not too strong in the math, but isn’t that a statistics fail? Wouldn’t it only be 75%-100% vaccination failure if those four people were the only ones to have received vaccinations? I would bet real money that there are actually lots of people who got the vaccine and did not get mumps, which should give us a lot lower failure rate.

ETA: Looks to me more like straight line wind damage.

…is it the angle or am I the only person wondering how the heck the powerlines managed to not be damaged?

I think they’re saying the pool party is near.

Going to be all Mary Sunshine here, and propose that Casebolt’s commander is not an asshole, and is very, very pissed off.

Gotta keep studying for an exam, but wanted to leave this here. Wingnut font added, because I can. FWIW, Weinstein & his wife receive incredibly vile antisemitic hate mail on a regular basis:

Congress Should Focus on Contracting Reform

Case in point: FEA, Inc. is a central Florida-based firm that, according to its website, can “MANAGE (HANDS ON) DoD PROJECTS”, “PERFORM REVERSE ENGINEERING ON OEM MILITARY PARTS TO BECOME SOURCE APPROVED WITH THE DoD”, and is “INSTRUMENTAL IN MAINTAINING A 100% QUALITY RATING WITH THE DoD FOR 10 YEARS RUNNING”.

Apparently it also knows a thing or two about italics and caps lock.

Howard King, who, according to his LinkedIn profile, is a general manager at FEA, has landed in hot water with the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. […]

On Monday, May 18, a message was sent from King’s corporate email account to MRFF leader Mikey Weinstein. It wasted no time beating around the bush, and was so over-the-top that one wonders if its author lost his mind before putting fingers to keyboard: “THE SCUM JEWS ! SHOULD HAVE BEEN GASSED”.

There goes caps lock again. […]

After Weinstein received the email, he inquired about why it had been sent. On May 21, King responded that he was not responsible for the message and claimed his email account had been compromised. He also mentioned that “JESUS WAS JEWISH AND I WOULD IN NO WAY SEND SUCH AN EMAIL”.

What is with caps lock? Really now. […]

So when does Casebolt go on Hannity???

Oh, don’t worry, by week’s end he’ll just be another example of the “War on Cops” that wingnuts believe is now being waged by the President, Rev. Sharpton, and anybody with skin color darker than cardboard.

Strange weather for this time of year. Remnant of a hurricane snuck up north and yesterday and today feels very tropical.

No rain, sadly.

In retrospect, that might have been a smart thing as long as sufficient defenses were in place-but I suspect that probably wasn’t the case.

If I lived anywhere else, I would say today’s weather feels like there should be a thunderstorm.

Alas, but not here.

We’re just not used to humidity above 50% during the day.

Wait, it goes lower than 50%?

I know, I know, spoiled CA folks. But seriously, it is 82 and my humidity is 51% and I will not get a thunderstorm out of this.

To be fair, it says it’s only 41% humidity here today, despite being 90 degrees. This is probably the driest heat we will have all year.

138 petesh  Jun 9, 2015 3:53:32pm

I’m a CA resident and I got mail from my Senator (the estimable Bill Monning) this morning, saying that he and at least one other had “been served with Preliminary Notices of Intent to Recall by opponents of SB 277, the bill to require parents to show proof that their children have been vaccinated before they can enroll in a public school unless they qualify for a medical exemption.”

Monning is taking a wait-and-see approach for now — the recall would need about 75,000 signatures — but this is nuts. A special election would be hugely expensive, and to hold one over a single vote is ridiculous. And over this one?

I was very pleased to look up my assemblyman and see he is a cosponsor of it. As is my state senator.

I should write them both and thank them.

Or a very good name for a band

the GOP Klown Kar is the first verified Perpetual Motion Machine. It just keeps going and going and going no matter how crowded it becomes, how heavy it is with xenophobia, patriarchal neanderthalism, misogynistic dumbness, and heavy weight stupid.

Simply an amazing device this 2016 model of GOP Klown Kar.
