There are people here who can actually use photoshop, but I think the pushback against those who show any Confederate flag should be that you can choose one flag or the other. If you choose the Confederate flag, you are no longer a US citizen. By the first amendment, they can choose the wrong flag, but I can treat them appropriately.

I like that photo. In a way it has painting like qualities. I messed with a copy of it to see if I could get more texture and detail in the whites. I also like how the background blue is gaining some grain. All that gives it a nice painting feel to it.

We went to Mexico City when I was 17 and spent a day at the pyramids. I got to climb the Pyramid of the Sun. Even at that age is was a tough climb—very steep, tiny narrow stairs, and not enough oxygen (because of the altitude).

The view of the surrounding mountains is beautiful from the top of it, but I couldn’t help wondering how many people had their still-beating hearts ripped out of their chests where I was standing… Or how many bloody corpses went tumbling down the stairs I’d just climbed… *gulp*

Morbid I know, but it’s kind of impossible not to think of it when you’re up there if you know the history (and have an over-active imagination like mine, heh).

Yup. I hate to say it but my first answer to that question is, I want to see what really happened re: Jesus.

Let’s gently say I’m not a fan of Christianity. Let’s say I’ve consciously become non-religious and I have no respect or regard for any notion of the supernatural or religions in general (though I still have a bit of <3 for Judaism, I admit). Let’s say I’m one of Those People who think the whole story is devoid of any connection to documented reality, and that Ockham’s Razor leads me to personally and (usually) privately conclude that at best, a Jewish travelling preacher named Yeshua with a follower or three (one of them possibly named Matityahu) got himself killed somehow, somewhere, in that time period, and some of his fans, like local Essenes, told stories that later got picked up on and re-written (poorly) and propagandized into the mother of all fish stories which eventually formed the basis for a religion…

Even so…

My curiosity and the fact that I live in an age influenced by this belief system makes me want to know What. Exactly. Happened. If there was one guy like Willem Dafoe in The Last Temptation of Christ… If there was an illegitimate son of a soldier, or maybe ten guys named Yeshua who all inspired stories - whatever the facts are - I’d want to go see them. And if it was one guy or two or twenty, you’d better believe I’d want to meet them or at least follow at a distance and hear what they really had to say.

Besides that… I don’t know if I’d want to see events so much as time periods. I’d want to be in the area for a week or three when important stuff happens. I would visit pivotal moments before they happened, so I could know both sides of the change.

I would be there when the first Europeans arrived at what would become New York City. I guess that would be the Dutch, sailing up the harbor? I’d want to be on that boat in 1400-whatever and look out over the gunwales at this little swampy inlet that would become one of the foremost cities in the world, sinking under its own weight in pavement, with towers a thousand feet high, filled with millions, a cultural axis of the world.

I would go back to Germany towards the end of the Roman Empire and walk in the woods a bit, to know the country before it came onto the global radar.

I would be in Sumer when somebody first put a wheel on a thing to make it roll.

I’d want to see Solomon’s Temple, and the laying of the first stones at Giza. We know how stuff turned out, what would it be like to be there at the beginning? Those are the moments that interest me.

I thought an interesting idea for a story would be to have doubting Thomas be a time traveler. Jesus, being Jesus, would know who he is.

You could take the story in either direction: The Christian one where events fold out exactly as they do in the New Testament, or a more historical one, where he doesn’t perform miracles, but convinces everyone that helping each other is a far better way to live.

How about spending some time in the Delta during the birth of Jazz? I don’t know enough about the history of Jazz to say where I should be, but I’m sure that would be worth a visit. What about New Orleans during a heyday - ANY heyday - pre-Katrina? (I only visited once, AFTER the storm).

One of my favorite scenes in any TV show is in HBO’s John Adams, when Stannis Baratheon, Harvey Pekar, and Carmine Falcone* are sitting around drafting the Declaration of Independence… How about being in that room?

Being at Concord Bridge… Or in the boat with Paul Revere as he rowed past the guns of the HMS Somerset. So many moments lost in time like tears in the rain!

Not really a fan of True Detectives and to it Vince Vaughn and …bleh.

I did watch Ballers with Dwayne The Rock Johnson. I’m not usually into sports themed movies/tv, but I love The Rock and any show with The Rock wearing impeccably tailored suits and an occasional shirtless scene (or more :-) wouldn’t be frowned upon by me…lol.

I actually liked it though. I mean a show with Denzel Washington’s son, Jane Fonda’s son, Dule Hill and The Rock…well they gott me hooked. I thought it was a good pilot and looks like I’ll be watching an HBOoriginal drama series for the first time in YEARS!

Stanley said no tragedies, but if I wanted to see the past, it’s because of historical curiosity, and my historical curiosity is mostly piqued by two tragic events in recent history (each of which is a set of many smaller tragic events). So it’s one of the two, hard to decide which one (no further details).

I’d ask everyone one of them what “heritage” did they like/revel/love about the Confederacy? 9 to 10 none of them have a really good answer.

Essentially, I make it my mission to call them on it.

Alos too, did I miss it when the South “won” the Civil War? Since when do the loser’s of a war get to fly their flag over the winning side?

If I could go back in time what would I want to see?

For me, I’d want to go back to see my Grandfather and Grandmother when they were organizing the United Steelworkers Union in Ambridge and Aliquippa PA during the 1930’s. Grandpa said the happiest day of his life was when the courts upheld the Wagner Act and forced Jones & Laughlin to bargain with the Union.

That hasn’t happened ever. Sorry to be a buzzkill but the Cubs played at

Well gang, I’m outta here. Did 3 dives today and am nicely tired out. About 2.5 hours underwater. Only problem is my main set of car/house keys disappeared sometime during the day. I keep a spare set attached to the trailer hitch, so I was able to drive home and get in, but it’s puzzling. I’m going to carefully go through the car, make sure they didn’t fall between seats, under the console, something like that.

Be good, and if you can’t be good, be really really bad so you don’t waste the experience.

My dad’s dad was a lifer in the NLRB from Pittsburgh. And my mom’s grandparents were coal miners. Solidarity brother.

I like that photo. In a way it has painting like qualities. I messed with a copy of it to see if I could get more texture and detail in the whites. I also like how the background blue is gaining some grain. All that gives it a nice painting feel to it.

Not at all. When I cropped it to the size I displayed I sort of converted it from a “landscape” mode into what was more of an art piece mode. And nice work with the whites since the photo it has blue and a lower haze blue-white background that can be tough to work with since it doesn’t contrast as well with the white of the milkweed seeds.
