The last line of the LA times’ review of Sharknado 3:
Some will not be eaten, but none will emerge unscathed.
From Hunter at kos:
…”We’re out here to protest the sickening behavior of yesterday,” said Ian McDougal, Lake Dallas resident openly carrying a loaded AR-15, concealed revolver and “Don’t Tread On Me” flag. “It’s ruining the charm of this town.”
And so the rights of the AR-15 were defended that day, and the charm of Denton, Texas was saved by the bearded man in the camouflage cap with a gun strapped to his waist and another slung across his back so that he could properly and more effectively carry the flag signaling his resistance to the government-backed oppression of his people, good and decent people, the people of the loaded gun.
Sigh—these people are nuts. And with that, good night.

I’m off to bed. Just wanted to post a pic I took this weekend… I’m not sure why I like it so much…. it may be the the subject is just so slightly out of focus. I keep going back to it and liking it more and more. Weird.
Not really modified that much, I played a bit with the exposure and punched it up a little, but not what I’d call a “heavy handed” manipulation.

The only two things I can figure is either there’s a straight shot past the liquor store that we can’t see because the Camaro is blocking our view, or it came in from the left, hopped that grassy verge, and spun around after it landed on the Subaru.

Wisconsin AFL-CIO says Scott Walker budget means ‘no weekend for workers’
OK. So far so good.
The state AFL-CIO said, “Scott Walker’s bad budget includes: No weekend for workers.”
But the provision does not apply to all workers, as the claim suggests. What’s more, it is a voluntary thing — workers could agree to the extra day to, for instance, earn extra overtime.
We rate the claim False.
I rate Politifact: Dumb as a post.

My humble prediction about Trump:
He’s going to ride this wave into the first GOP debate, where he will crash and burn. His bombastic “tough guy” routine works fine when he’s solo. But, things will be different when going up against “professional” politicians. Say what you will about the pro-pols, but they get actually training to hone their debate skills and have years, and in some cases decades, of experience. I think the pro pols will have a coordinated effort to make Trump look stupid, and his ego it too large not to take the bait. He’ll ultimately come off looking amateurish and the media will pile on large and loud.

Maybe. You have to take into consideration his ability to convince investors to put up their (and others) money even after four failed casinos. Ignoring or discounting his business experience and negotiating skills is not wise. The man might appear to be a buffoon, but I lay you odds he is a very sharp negotiator and will be a formidable debate opponent.

Ok. I’ll follow that advice and let all y’all know the outcome!!
I honestly think Trump could hold his own in the debates because, as noted, he’s got years of TV experience and thus knows how to best read from a script to get the most bang. The rest of the field will come off as wooden and insincere, with the possible exception of Havana Ted, who will just come off sounding like the professional asshole he is. But Trump not only has years more experience being an asshole, he’s also got Ted beat when it comes to being a turd in the GOP punch bowl.
Now, can Trump win primary votes? I seriously doubt it, I think he’s gonna be gone before Super Tuesday. That said, I don’t rule out a third party run, because I think the man is so much of a glory hound that he’ll see running as a third party candidate as his way to keep the cameras focused on him.

Good points. Trump likely sees this as another deal and he’s saying whatever he thinks he needs to say to close. His competitors are in a tough spot because they’re all running on the same ideas so they can’t attack him there. He’s become the champion of the Republicans’ basest base and he’s only saying directly what they’re saying in code. If they savage him in the debate he can claim that the smartypants establishment politicians beat him up because they’re out of touch with Real Americans. They have him right where he wants them.

NEW YORK — Donald Trump says the chances that he will launch a third-party White House run will “absolutely” increase if the Republican National Committee is unfair to him during the 2016 primary season.
“The RNC has not been supportive. They were always supportive when I was a contributor. I was their fair-haired boy,” the business mogul told The Hill in a 40-minute interview from his Manhattan office at Trump Tower on Wednesday. “The RNC has been, I think, very foolish.”

Morning all…
It’ll will probably be extremely sacrilegious to say it, but I’ve never been a big fan of either Bruce or Jon…but if I had to choose one I’d go with Springsteen. His music has more earthy roots and I like his voice more. Bon Jovi is too much a pretty boy and I really don’t think he has the voice Springsteen has. Springsteen is also a better songwriter.
And when history is written…Springsteen will be in the books as an American traditionalist.

Apparently this is their latest hill to die upon. All Trump has done is take what much of the Republican base thinks and blurted it out.
The question for me still is: does he really mean it or is he messing with everyone?
Trump has said he liked Clinton as his favorite president in his lifetime. At one time Trump was a Democrat. So, I think it is still hard to pin down what Trump would really be about.
He really hasn’t gotten around to actual policy talk, just bombast. So, is he a moderate socially and a conservative monetarily? Maybe someday when he chills out a bit he might actually say. But I’m not holding my breath…just enjoying the show for now.

Agreed. I like Foo Fighters (and especially Grohl) much more but Nirvana was a unique creation almost solely defined by the state of Cobain’s mental health.
Grohl is a classic pop song writer - look at Learning to Fly or Times Like These - pure gems but no one will get from them the same shock that they got the first time they hear the lead riff of Smells Like Teen Spirit putting a stake in the heart of the hair metal era.

Attacking the victim of excessive force seems to be the norm for police departments across the country. This cannot stand.
The body count left in the wake of officers engaging in abusive actions keeps growing, and yet politicians are loath to do anything about it.
Here in NYC, there was a lot of fretting about how ending stop and frisk would result in a massive increase in crime. Well, the NYPD reported today that crime is down 6% from last year. Not exactly an increase. Better policing matters.
As does weeding out abusive cops from departments across the country. The NYPD does a better job addressing corruption than it does abusive cops. Since 2009, 5% of cops result in 40% of resisting arrest claims. 15% of cops bring 75% of the resisting arrest cases.
Then there’s the records that the NYPD and CCRB have put together regarding complaints - and that the NYPD so far has done little to use that data to retrain or fire bad cops.
CCRB Records show that 40 percent of the 35,000 officers on the force today have never been the subject of a citizen complaint. Another 20 percent have only one. Yet about a thousand cops have 10 or more complaints. One has been able to rack up 51. The name of that officer is confidential, as are the names of any officer who is the target of a CCRB complaint.
“If an officer has a pattern of a lot of complaints, let alone substantiated complaints, that officer is certainly worth watching and even warning and certainly retraining,” Emery said.
Yet — at least until now — the department hasn’t seemed too interested in using the board’s trove of records to spot problem officers.
“They’ve had access to it but they never asked,” Emery said. “The problem is (that) in the past, the New York City Police Department has not viewed the CCRB as anything but an irritant.”
There’s a longstanding trend that indicates that the resisting arrest charges have been used as a cover for police malfeasance - the officer had to use force because the person resisted arrest, when the reality is that the officer escalated with force, and then had to cover their actions with a charge.
The proof of all this is that so few resisting arrest charges are sustained, particularly in NYC where there are more than 10,000 resisting arrest charges brought annually.
What is also clear is that, at least in New York City, more than half of arrests for resisting arrest routinely end up dismissed in court. Fifty-two percent of more than 4,400 cases resolved last year were dropped. Just eight arrests ended in convictions.
It’s possible that many of the charges were dropped in exchange for convictions/deals on other charges, or reductions to lesser penalties.
But if so many of these charges are being brought by such a small percentage of cops, the public deserves to know what about these particular cops is resulting in the abundance of resisting arrest charges. Is it bad training or bad actors.
I highly suspect the latter - that these officers think that they are entitled to act however they see fit, and are therefore engaging in actions that escalate to potential violence and/or result in an arrest where a ticket or warning would have otherwise sufficed.

And that cycle feeds on itself. If a police officer continually gets away with being abusive or over-reacting with no pushback (or at least pushback in official channels) there is no reason for that behavior to not become habitual. And I expect things can easily escalate to rage when they come up against someone not “respecting their authority”.

NBC News - Black Man Samuel Dubose Shot in Head by Cincinnati Cop Ray Tensing
Prosecutors are reviewing the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by a University of Cincinnati police officer who had pulled the driver over for having a missing front license plate, authorities said Tuesday.
Samuel Dubose, 43, was shot once in the head following a brief struggle as he sat behind the wheel of his car Sunday night, university and city police said. The officer, Ray Tensing, who is white, was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

Stopped for a missing license plate and then shot in the head. Be sure to watch the video. The Cincinnati mayor seems to understand this is all fucked up.
Question for the NYC lizards.
I’m coming into the city from Philadelphia this Saturday morning to meet someone for lunch near Times Square. Is it worthwhile to come in early and walk from Penn Station to there, or should I be looking at taking a taxi and/or the subway as well?

I hate it when people post a “profound” quote without thinking. I have no problem with the second half, but the first half is a total mess. I don’t think kids really believe they become musicians by auditioning for Idol or The Voice. Those kids were already singing for years before they had those auditions. So they were already musicians. Second, if those shows were ruining a generation of musicians we would already see it.
When did that guy turn into Crotchety Clint Eastwood?
Ah, Isbell. I’m checking him out tomorrow in Prospect Park. His solo stuff isn’t as great as what he contributed to the Drive-By Truckers (seriously, everyone drop what they’re doing and go to Spotify and listen to “Decoration Day” and “Danko/Manuel”), but it’s got great moments nonetheless. “Children of Children” is haunting as all hell.

If you want to see something, really see something, take the subway
OT Thought experiment that will help me allocate my season tickets (NFL) fairly among my friends.
There are tickets to 8 games that I am splitting with others and there are a total of 4 people in the group (including me), HOWEVER, one of the people only wants 1 game. Therefore I am taking the extra game.
Person 1: 3 games
Person 2: 2 games
Person 3: 2 games
Person 4: 1 game
Naturally if everyone wanted 2 games, I would put all 4 names in a hat and pick the draft order then we would pick games according to that.
But with the odd distribution of game “shares” it makes that a little more difficult.
A logical solution is to put each persons name in the hat for each “share” they have and pull the order that way.
Is that the most fair way of doing it?
Any thoughts?

Trump’s greatest sin so far is that he’s shredded the illusion that there’s no difference between the two parties. A lesser sin is that he’s revealed that a large number of Americans are that ignorant, angry and bigoted. He’ll be castigated for his remarks, but the reasons that they’re resonating with the Republican base will never be mentioned in the media.

I think it depends on how much a super-cop the individual officer is.
I know in Columbus, the Ohio State University police are a pretty big squad because the campus physical size and student/teacher/staff population is the size of a small city (80,000+ I would guess). And they also patrol certain parts of the city that surround the campus because it all ties together. So I would bet the OSU police would stop you for a license plate infraction…like expired plates.
See which friends will go to the preseason games. They’ll deserve first pick.

Not sure actually. One “unfair” aspect of my “logical” suggestion (one name in the hat for each share you have) is that I could have the first three picks and the guy with a solo game could get last pick. I’m just a big pushover for “fairness” so I’m not sure how to define fair in this case.

If we’re only including President who were part of the Democratic Party, and not the Democratic-Republican Party, he’s wrong. I can find no record of Grover Cleveland owning slaves (he was only 24 when the Civil War started anyway). If he’s including Democratic-Republican presidents, he’s wrong because John Quincy Adams didn’t own slaves.
re: #147 Franklin
When picking from a hat, the selection process is fair, but not necessarily the outcome. Perhaps if you had two drawings. One has a chit for all four people, and those could be for the divisional games, (or maybe the four most attractive games on the schedule). The second drawing has one for the remaining three. That leaves person 1 with the last remaining game. I think that would balance the outcome and selection process.

I think it’s more than that. The GOP is afraid of women who are in control of their own bodies, and therefore they seek to destroy a group that provides health care and reproductive health services for millions of women. It’s a patriarchal view of the world that the GOP can’t escape from - they don’t want women asserting their freedoms, let alone the right to control their own bodies.
So they fall into the usual litany of lies and smears to try and destroy PP.

OH PLEASE, OH PLEASE, OH PLEASE!!!!
Question is, which third party would be most in line with his political views?
Let’s go down the list:
Top three who actually have elected people to office:
Libertarian - Other than the “privatize everything” view on economics, he’s pretty much at odds with them in regards to immigration, civil liberties, and drug laws.
Green Party - I can’t think of a single item he agrees with them on.
Constitution Party - Trump doesn’t want to turn the US into a theocracy from the best I can tell (his ego wouldn’t allow anyone to be above him), so no.
After that, you’ve got a few minor parties -
Modern Whig Party - proponents of campaign finance reform, as well as stringent financial disclosure for candidates which would limit the amount of money spent on a campaign, and elimination of “soft” money - I think it’s safe to say they’re out.
Reform Party - hard to guess on this one because keep in mind that they have had both Ralph Nader and Pat Buchanan as their Presidential nominee.
There’s a slew of left-wing parties that embrace elements of socialism in some form or fashion, so all of those can be safely excluded.
Past those, there’s only the fringe groups left like the Independent American Party (neo-Confederacy), American Freedom Party (formely Third Position - white nationalist fascism), and an assortment of Dominionist religious parties.

“The Center for Medical Progress” has at the very least violated federal tax law by lying to the IRS in its application to be a non-profit, as well as to donors about what its mission is. It also likely violated California’s law barring videotaping conversations without the consent of both parties. Comic Sans. Comon people, it’s obvious.
I have a general question. Are we becoming jaded to all the police shootings?
I posted about another sad shooting of another unarmed black man in #127 above.
I am a bit surprised there has been no discussion or mention of it other than Higgs Boson’s Mate.
Is it because there isn’t video that brings it all into question? Does it need to become a national story for everyone to care.
The reason I ask is as a bit of a social study. I have a feeling that many incidents like the one that happened in Cincinnati might go on and we never hear about them. Yet each one involves a death, probably needlessly.
How many families bury a person totally without the larger part of society caring and how do they feel when another similar incident makes national news and people all over turn it into a big thing and there are demonstrations and national figures attending the funereal?

Not sure if this makes sense, but it strikes me that the person with the largest investment might deserve some consideration in the selection process. The “draw” could be weighted by allowing each party one chit with their name on it, in the hat, for each game they are purchasing. You then randomly draw names, with the drawn named selecting their choice of one game, until all the chits/games are drawn/assigned.

Meanwhile, looks like things are about to get hotter for the Da’esh filth:
Turkey will open up Incirlik Air Force Base, about 250 miles from the Syrian city of Raqqa, to U.S. Air Force operations against the Islamic State, according to multiple foreign news outlets. The move puts anti-ISIS coalition aircraft, which had been flying some 1,200 miles to strike Islamic State positions, much closer to the various battlegrounds, including Raqqa, the effective capital of the Islamic State in Syria.
The agreement that opened the base to strike missions is a few weeks old, the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet reported. “The two sides agreed in principle about the use of the İncirlik base in Adana during talks on July 7-8,” it said.
But a recent terror attack inside Turkey may have added a certain urgency to Ankara’s response to the Islamic State. On Monday, 31 people were killed when a bomb exploded in the Turkish city of Suruc. Turkish authorities have blamed the attack on a student, Seyh Abdurrahman Alagoz, whom they said has ties to the Islamic State.

I dunno. I think Trump will be his bombastic self, talking over all the others and not allowing them to be professional pols.
We shall see.
As for the media piling on. Nope. They get ratings for this. Why do you think he is virtually all the talk about now. It’s not about country or even politics. It is about ratings and profit.

I worry that all of our politicians are way too hesitant to go after police issues. The police are historically protective of their own and very insular. They can get nasty. They can cause all kinds of political destruction.
Probably the only way this will get fixed is if it gets to be explosive enough and a good size majority of the US citizens are just outraged and want change. Then the politicians might grow strong enough to go to work on policing. In other words, when it means votes and keeping their jobs, it will be important.
And I hope no one thought I was chiding the LGF members for not responding to #127. As I said I wanted to ask the questions I did because the folks around here are a good gauge of how sensible folks are feeling about this happening too much.

re: #226 ObserverArt
It just seems sad to me that one may get attention and another just happens and the sun comes up another day.
And it is not just about the Cincinnati shooting I posted. Just think of other Freddy Grays (Baltimore Police rough up in van case) or Walter Scotts (North Charleston SC guy who fled from his car and was shot and killed) that happen every day in this country we may not hear about.

The lack of any empathy for victims just glorifies what the terrorists are doing. Big explosions and carnage sell movies and news. In the same light, it sells terrorism too.
If the media were to address the human cost of what the terrorists were doing (particularly in the effected regions), it would become less desirable to many disaffected youth who may turn to AQ/ISIS and the like. Then there’d be fewer explosions and BREAKING headlines.

The reaction of the Turkish media is schizoid. Pro-government press is covering it, but oh-so-gently. Media that’s critical of the current government is heavily emphasizing the ISIS factor.
The Turkish government itself doesn’t seem to know how to approach this; they’ve employed what a writer at Today’s Zaman called a “live and let live” approach to Da’esh thus far, and the Suruc attack - and no doubt, today’s events which led to the death of a Turkish non-commissioned officer - is likely leading to a rather dramatic rethink of that strategy. Of course, for the AKP, it’s also a risky strategy, as a good deal of their base is strongly Islamist, especially in the more rural areas of Turkey, and going out there and, let’s say, bombing the ever-loving shit out of Da’esh would most likely create a very serious anti-AKP backlash from their own supporters.
I believe a Dr. Victor Frankenstein (or was that Frankensteen?) once faced a rather similar dilemma.

Now Sen. Ron Johnson is lecturing MIT physicist Ernest Moniz on electro-magnetic pulse weapons.

What the religious wingnuts, who are raving apocalyptically about the Iran deal, fail to realize is that the rest of the world don’t really care about the religious fantasies of said wingnuts.
The rest of the world, particularly Asia, will eventually trade openly with Iran in the hopes of securing petroleum products. And thus Iran will eventually have a more of an income, and they will do what they want.
Is it really that hard to understand?
re: #330 blueraven
A bit of context: Johnson is the senior Senator from Wisconsin and a Republican. Ernest Moniz is the Secretary of Energy and one of the lead US negotiators on the Iran deal. Electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) weapons are a nonsense science fiction “threat” and long-time point of obsession among certain conservatives, such as Newt Gingrich and Ron Johnson. His line of questioning, to a top-of-his-field nuclear physicist, is a little like asking Neil Armstrong if he thinks the moon landing might have been faked.
re: #331 freetoken
It’s more basic than that. Without any deal, there are no inspections, and Iran keeps accumulating the tech, materials, and know how to make a nuclear weapon, sanctions notwithstanding.
With the deal, all of that is limited and supervised. So while the deal initially lasts 10 years, you can be sure that it would be revisited down the road. And it allows for sanctions to be reinstituted on violation and the Russians and Chinese relinquished their right to veto that at the USSC, which is a big deal. So, if there is a violation and there’s proof, sanctions resume, and Russia and China can’t block it.

Hopefully, 2016 will rectify that horrendous event.

That said, I can’t watch any of this bullshit any longer. It doesn’t matter what network its on.
As for Chuck Todd…nope. Nope. NOPE. Never.

They tested it successfully on themselves.

Saw that. It was funny. Trump’s gonna be pissed.
It’s amusing. Two guys with very limited ability to maintain their composure. These guys are going to go at it unless someone intervenes.

re: #315 The Vicious Babushka
Is that a different Harry Truman from the POTUS who made an executive order integrating the U.S. Military?
He was in the KKK but to his credit he quit very quickly because of in particular their anti-Catholic prejudice. Truman probably did more for Civil Rights than any president did between Grant and LBJ honestly.
re: #291 ObserverArt
This sensible folk feels that, first off, most people (in the real world) just don’t give a shit unless it affects them.
People try to put their faith in police, the Officer Friendly of my youth, but that faith is too often misplaced.
And too many people, myself included, feel that we are completely powerless. It’s not like politicians listen to us. News people don’t give a shit about us (unless it brings ratings). Police don’t give a shit about us (generally. I hate saying this because there are good cops, but way too many not good ones.) Police have way too much power and, too often, way too much of an I Am Your Authority complex.
I don’t know what the average person does to remedy this atrocity of killing citizens.
Angus King, who is not on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has sat through far more of the hearing than Rand Paul, who is.

I have to say, I am very impressed with the patience of Kerry, Lew and Moniz and in their ability to answer with deep knowledge and logic, the inane questions and ridiculous assertions offered up by the republicans.
Conservatives like Hoft love to paint the KKK as Democrats and Southern but what made their success so frightening in the 20’s is how they crossed party lines and went as far west as Orange County (not exactly a liberal nor Democratic hot bed) and even Canada. And the 20’s is when the KKK was at its most powerful. Because they used patriotism to get appeal.

Yep. Anyone who thinks the KKK were liberals because they were founded by Democrats has their head up their ass so far that they won’t even find their colon. The Civil Rights movement was not about Democratic versus Republican, it was about liberalism versus conservatism and liberals are the ones who pushed the movement while conservatives like NR’s founder William F. Buckley opposed it. Conservatives love pointing to the Republicans like Nelson Rockefeller, Ike, Tom Dewey who supported the movement but they don’t tell you that conservatives despised them for it.

Tuxedo Cat was glad to see me get home. She even did some lap time earlier today (rare event). Then she just “surfed” a cutting board off the top of my bread box across the counter where I have dishes stacked and onto the floor.
Cat unharmed (but startled). Feline staff irate over the loss of a coffee cup, potential damage to my tea steeper, wet tea leaves scattered about, plus silverware all over the place. (The coffee cup was a heavily-built polypropylene one from a company I worked for that has been gone for over 15 years. Not easily replaced. And she got my favored ceramic tea mug, also from a former workplace, about three weeks ago.) Gah.
re: #312 GlutenFreeJesus
The lack of any empathy for victims just glorifies what the terrorists are doing. Big explosions and carnage sell movies and news. In the same light, it sells terrorism too.
If the media were to address the human cost of what the terrorists were doing (particularly in the effected regions), it would become less desirable to many disaffected youth who may turn to AQ/ISIS and the like. Then there’d be fewer explosions and BREAKING headlines.
But that would imply that the media was interested in being part of the international (or even local) community with an interest in improving things. As compared to claiming neutrality and “not wanting to be the news, just report it” while standing off to the side and counting their advertising income while reading the ratings chart.

Well Kerry was a Senator and thus is probably knowledgeable about the tactics of hearings. He might have given the others some advice. Or it’s simply that they are familiar with the kangaroo hearing tactics from other places and know that patience is the best response since besides sound bites the questioning is hoping to trigger a blow-up. Thus the lack of courtesy and a fair time to respond since the goal of the hearing is not to learn any facts or useful information.

SMOTI SHOWS HE’S STILL AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME (being stupid)

Truman was 29 when he wrote that racist screed, a small town Missourian. He lived another 60 years and there is no doubt, none at all, that his attitudes changed dramatically by the time he was in public office, let alone by the time he served as President.
These RW assholes really do think this kind of absurd context distortion and partial truth is the very height of wit and rhetorical skill, just as they think their strawmen and fabricated quotes are irrefutable. They have no idea how transparent it is or how obvious their dishonesty and ignorance really are. They are global poster children for Dunning-Kruger syndrome.
As I pointed out above, conservative devil-goddess Phyllis Schlafly has not modified her positions or attitudes one bit in over 60 years. To conservatives, personal and intellectual growth and change are bad things.
