Stupidest Man on the Internet: The Media Are Biased Because They Don’t Say Obama Was Born in Kenya

Jim Hoft comes through with the most mindless defense of Ben Carson yet
Wingnuts • Views: 62,100

Good grief, not this old dried-up fake story again. Jim Hoft, fabled Stupidest Man on the Internet, goes full-on Birther at last with an amazingly incoherent (even for him) post that tries to accuse the media of having a double standard because they criticize Ben Carson but never mentioned that President Obama was born in Kenya: Media Double Standard: Ben Carson Is a Liar but Barack Obama Isn’t a Kenyan - the Gateway Pundit.

And to shore up this utterly mindless comparison, he dredges up a ridiculous fake 2012 story from Breitbart “News” (one of their “THE VETTING” masterpieces) about a promotional booklet produced by a literary agency in 1991 that mistakenly stated Obama was “born in Kenya.”

How’s this for a media double standard?

Barack Obama was either born in Kenya or he lied about it for years.
Breitbart.com published a 1991 booklet by Barack Obama’s literary agent today that says Obama was “born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii.”

[…]

The liberal media later blamed the publisher, not Obama for giving the publisher the information.

But that same liberal media is calling neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson a liar for his stories of struggling as a child in inner city Detroit.
What a bunch of hypocritical trash!

As usual, Jim Hoft has totally garbled up the facts in his crack-brained rant. As a matter of record, the literary agent who actually produced this booklet released a statement in an obviously futile attempt to prevent this kind of idiotic right wing speculation:

“You’re undoubtedly aware of the brouhaha stirred up by Breitbart about the erroneous statement in a client list Acton & Dystel published in 1991 (for circulation within the publishing industry only) that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. This was nothing more than a fact checking error by me — an agency assistant at the time. There was never any information given to us by Obama in any of his correspondence or other communications suggesting in any way that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii. I hope you can communicate to your readers that this was a simple mistake and nothing more.”

Articles like this are why Jim Hoft will never be dethroned as the one true Stupidest Man on the Internet.

Oh, and here are a few of his knuckle-dragging racist readers’ comments, just to complete the right wing fustercluck.

There is a video on youtube of the MI6 spokes person in the British government who was in charge of Kenya at the time of birth of Barry Soetoro aka Barrack Hussein Obama. The British government has all of Obama’s birth records and paperwork and knows beyond a shadow of doubt that Obama was born in Mombasa, Kenya.

lol The certificate he showed from Hawaii isn’t a legal live birth certificate. I saw a video of the man in charge of finding proof that Obama was born in Hawaii. He said they could not find any documentation whatsoever nor a single person that had anything to do with it. She didn’t tell her worst lies till after the 2008 election. During the 2008 election, Sarah Palin couldn’t dropped from the ticket because had McCain done so he would have been labeled a “contemptible RINO” and many evangelicals would have dropped their support for him.

No, they were DQed by the stock market taking a nosedive and the housing market’s collapse finally becoming unconcealable. Had Leman Brothers not gone under when it did, its quite possible Hank Paulson could have papered things over long enough for McCain and Palin to have had a chance. But when Leman went done, as went the economy, so went the nation.

Sorry my friend but once she opened her mouth, Obama was elected. The only real question after that was by how much. Had McCain had the honor to go with his convictions and pick Lieberman he might well have still lost due to lower support among the hard core wingnuts and evangelicals (but I repeat myself) but he would have done far better with the rest of the voting population.

Like a lot of albums of that time. It may not even really be them on some of the other cuts. I can’t say I’ve heard much of it, or remember if I ever did.

But, I knew a lot about the Ohio “Bubblegum” bands that were under the control of Kasenetz-Katz/ Super K Productions. Some of those bands were really just bands the label needed to fill the part of the musicians. One day you’d sign with them, then a few months later your record would be done and the band was never in the studio! Then a few months after that you’d get the bill for the production costs which were not all covered by your take of the album sales.

Political reality. Her Kouric interview was a killer, and just about every screech out of her mouth after that point had people watching.

To this day I can’t believe the GOP did not see it. How they ever picked her is amazing. I know they needed to cater to a side of the party, but there had to be someone other than Palin.

This was during my (R) days. And it’s funny to look back at it. Republican’s like to say that Democrats are “Low Information Voters”. But I was on auto-pilot from 2001 to 2012 checking the (R) boxes on voting ballots, hanging in the echo chambers and looking at critical thinking in the rear-view.

I also have a lot less hate in my heart nowadays :)

We’re exactly 1 year + 1 day away from the 2016 presidential election and I suspect the wingnuts are in full panic mode, pulling out all the stops as they watch their hopes of being able to nominate an electable GOP candidate circle the drain.

I think that at this point they’re capable of doing/saying just about anything in an effort to distract voters from the train wreck they’ve caused. It’s gonna get uglier before it gets better because we’re dealing with extremist, militant nihilists here, NOT conservatives (at least not according to the traditional definition).

Once again they remind me of Blaine (the insane, suicidal monorail) from Stephen Kings’ The Dark Tower series: darktower.wikia.com

It’s actually kind of sad to watch the once noble party that gave us presidents like Lincoln & Eisenhower descend into drooling, incoherent, pants-shitting madness.

I’m reminded of the long road of John “Johnny Cougar” Mellencamp. Started with one of those hideous contracts and I don’t know how much or not of Chestnut Street Incident he did but it’s not a good album and the name change didn’t help.

Unlike many he managed to claw his way back and even became a legitimate star on his own - a couple of the finest live shows I’ve ever been at were by him - but he was nearly destroyed by that machine. Fortunately for him he managed more than that one hit that was all so many others had.

For me, with Palin, it was the RNC speech.
When McCain first introduced her at Dayton, I thought she might be an interesting choice.
But then she opened her mouth at the convention.
And then she went on the campaign trail throwing red meat out to the frightened crowds (“he’s not like us…hanging around with domestic terrorists…REV. WRIGHT!!11!!”).
And THEN she decided to go rogue against McCain by heading to Michigan when she was specifically told not to go there.
It was a campaign in complete shambles and just a tiny glimpse into what a McCain/Palin administration would have been.

COMMUNITY ORGANIZER!!11!! is apparently still a thing with the wingnuts:

[Embedded content]

You know what else is weird? MLK was also a community organizer, but they don’t laugh at him—no, they try to compare other wingnuts to him in an attempt to cast them in a favorable light. What about Jesus? Community organizer. Were his efforts funny too? What they really want their base to think of is people like Al Sharpton. I’m not fond of the man and he certainly has his flaws, but he sure knows how to raise a stink and force politicians to pay attention to him. I’m pretty sure that’s the main reason they hate him (I doubt it’s ethics as most don’t seem to have any).

Speaking of stupidity:

[Embedded content]

Here’s a takedown of Carson’s Pyramids DERP that doesn’t read like a takedown:

Why do some people think the pyramids were grain stores?

US presidential hopeful Ben Carson has attracted attention and some ridicule this week for saying Egypt’s pyramids were built to store grain. As most schoolchildren know, they were actually tombs for pharaohs. But where did the granary idea come from, and would it even have worked?

Egyptian history isn’t something American presidential candidates are usually quizzed about on the campaign trail, but this week Republican Ben Carson faced a barrage of questions after it emerged he believed the pyramids were built by the Biblical figure Joseph for storing grain.

This was revealed on Wednesday when Buzzfeed published a video of Carson addressing students at a Michigan university affiliated with his Seventh-day Adventist Church 17 years ago. But the famed neurosurgeon, currently the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, told inquisitive journalists that his views had not changed.

So where does this granary theory come from?

In the Old Testament, Joseph is sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers, where he later interprets a pharaoh’s dreams and helps the Egyptians survive a seven-year famine - by storing grain. There is no mention of pyramids in the Bible’s version of the story but in the Middle Ages people started to write them into the story.

This piece is one the best knock-outs of a erroneous idea I’ve seen in a long time, in large part because it lacks the gloating ‘takedown’ pieces so often have. It’s honest, informative, and makes clear that Ben Carson is wrong without mocking the man.

Depends upon the church as well - we have them just fine in the Episcopalian church but they are officially forbidden in the Roman Catholic church for example. That said, I would be willing to bet there are more than a few priests who have them stashed aside for those parishioners that need them.

It really came down to a desperate attempt to belittle one of Obama’s strength. Think about it. At a time when greed was taking down the global economy, Barack Obama’s story was that he graduated a prestigious university, but instead of immediately cashing in, he went to work for almost nothing to help the poor people of Chicago. That’s an awesome biography right there. So they had to try and turn that into a negative. The problem is that it’s so stupid that no one bought it except stupid people.

It will be interesting to watch the polling. The polling continues to show Trump and Carson pulling down nearly half the GOP electorate with 86 days to go until the Iowa caucuses. Time is running out if this is going to turn into a battle between Rubio and Cruz for the nomination.

That’s the money quote right there. I know people who steadfastly maintain that it’s immoral for a company like Google or Microsoft (or any other large company) to take any actions that would improve life for others, improve the environment, improve the general quality of the world. It’s appropriate to mock him for the Pyramids DERP, but I think making clear he’s wrong without mockery is a better idea. It will help convince those who can be convinced Carson is wrong but whose instinct is to defend a Republican who is being attacked. So I favor making the takedown into something that cannot fairly be called an attack.

My objectives on this point are, admittedly, different from yours, but our interest in the truth is the same. In a way, it makes me think of one of the favorite terms of a few of the RWNJs, that being “Low Information Voters”, as in “Obama was only elected because he told Low Information Voters that they would get free stuff”

This enhances their own self-image as the elite (while railing against their version of the “elite political class”) and any losses they suffer are simply explained by the fact that not everybody is as smart as they are.

IF you believe that Obama was born in Kenya, you might be a LIV.
IF you believe that the President hates this country and is trying to destroy it, you might be a LIV
IF you believe that Hillary actively caused the death of Amb. Stevens and others, you might be a LIV.

Just arrived home from the Alabama Yellow Dog Presidential Luncheon. James Carville represented HRC, Mark Longebaugh from the Bernie campaign. Carville was a blast, and his driving theme was the 11-hour Behghazi derpfest. They will come to regret that.

I just got back from the Rachel Forum and the Dem Women’s fall meeting. Forum was great. Everyone had their supporters, but I think the consensus was that any one of the three would be capable of being a good president, and that the clown car on the right appears more foolish and childish every time the “grownups” get together to share their thoughts. I loved the questions, the atmosphere, and the answers. I thought O’Malley did really well and am surprised the guy can’t get any traction at all.

Will try to post some pics (mostly pretty bad, but…) later.

Bernie spoke to our group this morning, and he was “relaxed, funny Bernie” rather than “shouty, angry Bernie.” Kay Hagen was the Hillary surrogate, and O’Malley’s national campaign manager (?) spoke for him.

I think it’s worse that that.

This isn’t a driven by a lack of information, it’s driven by a lack of a standard of veracity. The problem is not what data they have, it’s how they process what they receive. At this point in the US, politics is reflecting a long term cultural change in which a portion of the population has walled themselves in and created a theology, an epistemology, and a teleology in which truth is affiliation. It’s the unification of charismatic religion and conspiracist thinking.

If that’s about Tarantino, then I’d like to add something on that score as it looks like the outrage aimed at him has not been based on the facts:

Police unions representing hundreds of thousands of policemen have announced plans to boycott Quentin Tarantino’s new movie, which will open on Christmas Day. The National Association of Police Organizations, which represents a quarter-million policemen, issued a statement supporting the boycott as a response to Tarantino’s having “bluntly referred to police as ‘murderers’.” Conservatives ought to support Tarantino — not because they like him or his movies, not because they agree with any of his political positions or because they are anti-police, but because Tarantino did not call policemen murderers. His speech — such as it was — lasted just 30 seconds. This is what he said, in full:

“Hey, everybody. I got something to say, but actually I would like to give my time to the families that want to talk. I want to give my time to the families. However I do just also want to say: What am I doing here? I’m doing here because I am a human being with a conscience, and when I see murder I cannot stand by, and I have to call the murdered the murdered and I have to call the murderers the murderers. Now I want to give my time to the families.”

Tarantino never says, nor does he imply, that he thinks all policemen are murderers. In fact, given the context, it seems perfectly clear that he’s talking only about specific instances of people killed by specific policemen. In later remarks on MSNBC, he said that he was talking about the deaths of Eric Garner, Sam DuBose, Antonio Lopez Guzman, Tamir Rice, and Walter Scott: He believes that these men were murdered, and that the policemen who killed them were murderers. He may have had other specific cases in mind (I imagine he did). Obviously, though, talking about a subset of police shooting is very different from saying that everyone killed by a policeman has been murdered, or that every policeman, by virtue of being a policeman, is a murderer.

Josh Gelernter goes on to smack Texas Ted Poe for his derping against Tarantino, so he does call out one of the nuts on his own side.

Its really about stereotyping, with cops reading “Quentin Tarantino” as “Generic Hostile Hollywood Liberal”, which he isn’t. Its also about confirmation bias, with many police and many of their defenders having adopted a siege mentality and reading that news that confirms said mentality. And its about people preferring to ignore facts instead of admitting error.

re: #96 Big Beautiful Door

I read an article earlier today about how the LDS’ new hardline against homosexuality has been a devastating blow to LGBT Mormons and their families. The cruelty is staggering, and they claim to be the moral ones.

I had a shower thought today and realized the Mormon church was treating the children of gay and lesbian same-sex married (SSM) couples worse than it treated black people prior to 1978. At least black people could get baptized. They won’t even allow a name and a blessing in church for the despised children of gay and lesbian SSM couples.

I think SLC and Utah in general is an amazing place, but I can’t help but think this decision is going to hurt like hell.

FWIW, it looks like the “Carson may have been a Dem. plant to argle bargle Cruz argle bargle Trump argle bargle (and here comes what they view as the strongest damnation of all) and he’s a product of Affirmative Action to start with.” meme has taken hold over at FR. I knew it was coming, there was / is a civil war forming over him there. It’s great fun to watch.

How come everybody else (Carson, The Gheys) gets all kinds of secret mission / infiltration type missions from the Democrats, and the most I’ve ever been asked to do at a local meeting was to make some coffee?

All three of them really are all very qualified, smart, think fast on their feet, have good senses of humor and “get it.” (And, if Biden had jumped in, the number would be four.) Might sound mushy, but I’m pretty proud to be a Democrat right now. When you figure that the only passengers in the clown car who aren’t stupid, crazy and/or totally unqualified are Kasich and Christie, it’s a sight to be seen. (ymmv on the clowns—Kasich is mean and phony, Christie is crooked and obnoxious, but the rest of them are off the charts scary.)

re: #36 ObserverArt

No, I have not. But I will look for it. Sounds interesting.

K&K did that to some guys I used to do sound and roadie work for back in the early 70s. When I heard the album it was like…who is that? You could tell right off. Happened to another group of friends a few years later.

They count on the bands wanting to be known. The next thing you know, you’re in a bad contract that ends up costing the band.

IIRC, typical recording contract back then was the label made approx $1.00 each LP (plus publishing), while the band paid back production costs (recording, packaging & promotion) at $.15 - $.23 a LP.

Free goods (LPs given out for promotion for which the band paid costs, but collected no royalties) drove bands paying attention to record label accounting nuts.

Free Goods were given to regional promotion (get the record played at radio stations) personnel far in excess of what was needed to hand out their area radio stations.

To sweeten the deal between the label and the promo guy, the understanding was that the promo guy would sell the excess promotional LPs to One Stops (non label) wholesalers who would in turn then sell them to record stores.

Ever buy a punch out (hole drilled in a corner, or corner cut off of an album cover) in a record store?

You just bought a free good (or a return) for which the band paid production expenses, but collected no royalties.

By the way, there’s a new feature in the popup Image Library, making it easier to add more than one image to a comment or LGF Page. When you click the Insert button, just hold the Shift key and the Image Library stays on-screen so you can add more pictures to your post.

This is especially handy if you’ve searched for image tags; previously you’d have to open the Image Library popup and do the search all over for each picture.

re: #165 BeenHereAwhile

I believe the same thing exists in book publishing. That paperbacks without a front cover mean that they have been ‘returned’ to the publishing house, so there are no royalties paid. There was a local flea market that always had a big shelf of ‘no-front-cover’ paperbacks.

Johnny Cougar’s first manager was a guy named Tony DeFries, his company was called MainMan.

Same manager as Ziggy-era David Bowie. He was notorious for bullying his clients.

Fun fact: During the Ziggy Stardust tour, DeFries forbade Bowie from leaving his hotel room. I learned that straight from Mick Ronson, who I met while they were out on that tour.

-snip-

Or artists like Elvis/Tom Parker who required that songwriters give up 1/2 of their publishing rights (in reality 1/2 of songwriter’s 1/2 or 1/4, as the publishing company got the other 1/2) to Elvis before he would record their song.

The best example is Dolly Parton who refused to allow Elvis to record “I will always love you” for that reason.

Her reply was, ‘I guess Elvis won’t be recording my song.’

More on DeFries from MentalFloss:

Tony Defries’ hero was Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker. So in 1970, when Defries saw a new king of rock in 23-year-old David Bowie, he pounced on the opportunity. The fearless Defries got Bowie signed to Elvis’ label, RCA, then spent lavishly on publicity stunts. He famously flew a plane full of American journalists first-class to London, where they watched Bowie perform his fantasy album Ziggy Stardust at the Dorchester Hotel. The press was then granted a private audience with Bowie in his suite, where he was still decked out in full glam-rock regalia. For his troubles, Defries took half the earnings.

Unlike the Colonel, who was a family man, Defries lived extravagantly. With his eight Manhattan apartments, karate-suit-wearing bodyguards, and crushed-velvet suits, Defries was more of a rock star than Bowie. In fact, at the height of his Ziggy fame, Bowie often borrowed money from Defries just to buy groceries. “I slaved and made nothing,” Bowie said after dumping Defries in 1975. The divorce wasn’t easy. In addition to 50 percent of all back royalties, Bowie surrendered 16 percent of future gross earnings through 1982.

He came in second on the ‘10 most ruthless managers’ list, behind Colonel Tom and ahead of Albert Grossman, who managed Dylan until Dylan couldn’t stand him any more and fired him.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Mysterious maneuvers over the Pacific are forcing a change in Los Angeles International Airport landings late at night, meaning noise for thousands of people in the flight path.

Instead of landing from the east over Inglewood, planes begin flying from the west and over the ocean to keep noise levels down, but due to secret military operations, the airspace over the Pacific is closed to incoming flights for the next week.

“We clearly understand that neighbors and communities east of the airport will experience noise and we apologize for that,” said Nancy Castles, LAX public relations director.

The military is not saying what exactly is causing the change, and LAX claims it’s also in the dark. Castles said all they know is planes can’t be flying at low altitudes to our west.

I saw a few episodes of the Americans (always loved Kerri Russell), that’s another I’d like to get back to. But there’s just so much out there now. I really need to find away to get paid for watching tv. Maybe I can get a job at Bill Simmons’ new website?

Did you ever see “Waitress?” Such a sweet movie—and a sad story about the writer/director.

Shaun may be one of those guys who’s a thinker and promoter, but who sucks at practical things like sound financial practices and oversight. The “Three Cups of Tea” guy is an example (Mortenson?). He’s gotten a lot of bad press because much of what he wrote never happened, and there are some serious questions about how the money his organization raised has been spent. He got in that situation because he’s a dreamer, not a businessman. I’d like to think he didn’t deliberately set out to bilk people of their money. And I’d like to think the same of Shaun King.

Unfortunately, their shortcomings can harm the very missions they seek to promote.

Very cool.

REI believes that being outside makes our lives better. That’s why this Black Friday, we’re closing all 143 of our stores and paying our employees to head outside.

I know it’s kind of a cynical marketing move at the same time, because they still have a website and I’m sure will be taking lots of people’s money on that. But I’d like to see more of an anti consumerism backlash to Black Friday and if this is how it starts I’m okay with that.

That was the best Doctor Who story ever, along with its most political.

I think we have a first though. For the first time, a Doctor Who baddie exists in the real world. The Republican Party.

They caused the cease-fire to nearly collapse during that 2-parter.

Question to DarkFalcon. How does it feel to be elevated to the same pantheon of villains as the Daleks, Cybermen, and the Weeping Angels? Will this be a wake-up call.

I have no idea what you’re talking about. I just got home after buying groceries.

As a kid in the 80’s my Dad and I used to go to REI when there was only one location, on Capitol Hill in Seattle. In the late 90’s I lived a block away from their Headquarters Store on Yale Ave. It’s a great company.
