Bobby Jindal Drops Out of Presidential Race

“This is not my time”

Bobby Jindal announces on Fox News that he’s “suspending” his campaign. (Which means he’s quitting. But candidates use “suspending” so they can continue to get money from the FEC to offset their campaign costs.)

His announcement on Fox News contains the usual trademark bigoted anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant message. This is the season of Republican xenophobia.

“Suspending” is also useful just in case nobody gets the necessary delegates during the primaries.

You are a heretic for even suggesting that the primaries are not going to be long enough to settle this.

Who’s Bobby Jindal?

He’s that guy who jumped up back in 2012 to suggest that the GOP couldn’t be the “stupid party”…then spent the rest of his gubernatorial term contributing to the nosediving his party’s collective IQ.

re: #7 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Since I’ve been eligible to vote, we’ve had:

- a sitting president impeached, but not convicted
- a president win an election while losing the popular vote
- a sitting governor of California successfully recalled
- a woman elected Speaker of the House
- an African American elected president

That leaves maybe three or four things left on the “list of things we’ll never see in American politics” (brokered convention, woman elected president (that’s looking likely this time around), member of the Supreme Court impeached)

Also, some people just want to see the world burn.

Slightly lightly OT, but it’s been weighing on me all weekend. I am sick and goddamn tired of all my Christian friends liking statements by their governors about rejecting Syrian refugees, or how they want to nuke all the Muslims, or how Obama is weak for not immediately retaliating with overwhelming force against ISIS. I’m basically outing myself as a liberal Christian this week because, fuck it, my FB friends need to see what Christ’s message is all about. American Christians have lost sight of the real Jesus amongst all the wingnut gun-porn fantasies of White American Jesus riding to the rescue and instituting religious nutjob theocracy. I’m sick of the victim mentality, I’m sick of the fear and the xenophobia, I’m sick of the cold lack of compassion and empathy among those who profess to follow the world’s greatest example of love in action. It’s time to take my stand, and damn the consequences.

I am the dopefish, and I am not a conservative.

I can think of a few more (I’m an alternate history buff, and have seen many of these scenarios explored):

Successful impeachment and conviction of a President or Cabinet secretary
Presidential election sent to the House/ VP election sent to the Senate
Nonwhite Speaker of the House
Speaker of the House (or lower) reaching the White House through the line of succession
Assassination of a Vice President or Supreme Court justice
Victorious Presidential candidate dies before inauguration (before or after Electoral College meets)
Faithless elector(s) alter the outcome of a Presidential election

On Friday night around 7 p.m., while the world looked on in horror as terrorists in Paris made flesh our collective nightmares, Rand Paul took to Twitter.

With uncertainty, fear and carnage gripping the globe, Kentucky’s junior U.S. Senator, in the cellar when it comes to presidential polls, was focused — on Marco Rubio.

“Do you stand with me or Marco Rubio on spending? #StandWithRand,” Paul asked on Twitter.

The post was later deleted, but it painted a pretty clear picture of Paul’s latest campaign predicament.

Paul, who Rubio referred to as an isolationist during the last GOP debate, has a problem with Republican primary voters when it comes to foreign policy.

snip

On Monday, Paul announced that he was introducing legislation that would suspend visa issuance for people from “high risk” countries and implement an additional waiting period for background checks for people from other countries.

Paul, noting that two al Qaeda-Iraq terrorists were arrested in Bowling Green in 2009, argued that “the time has come to stop terrorists from walking in our front door.”

Rand, try to keep up: the two guys were identified and caught before they could do anything.

Of course, it was so hard to tell whether he was running or not - especially since there were times when his polling indicated he was running against running at all. Never more than an asterisk.

Which means that there’ll be the inevitable question over who gets benefit of him dropping out and who will rush to support whom.

No one. No one will. No one will benefit. No one will gain - not when Jindal had zero support.

GGT wrote in last thread:

I see a trend here.

Well, yes:

Palingenesis (/ˌpælɪnˈdʒɛnəsɪs/; or palingenesia) is a concept of rebirth or re-creation, used in various contexts in philosophy, theology, politics, and biology. Its meaning stems from Greek palin, meaning again, and genesis, meaning birth. It is a central component of Roger Griffin’s analysis of Fascism as a fundamentally modernist ideology.[1]

[…]

British political theorist Roger Griffin has coined the term “palingenetic ultranationalism” as a core tenet of fascism, stressing the notion of fascism as an ideology of rebirth of a state and/or empire in the image of that which came before it - its ancestral political underpinnings. The best examples of this can be found with Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. Under Benito Mussolini, Italy purported to establish an empire as the second incarnation of the Roman Empire, while Adolf Hitler’s regime was seen as being the third palingenetic incarnation of the German “Reich” - beginning first with the Holy Roman Empire (“First Reich”), followed by Bismarck’s German Empire (“Second Reich”) and then Nazi Germany (“Third Reich”).

Moreover, Griffin’s work on Palingenisis in Fascism analysed the pre-war Fin De Siecle Western society. In doing so he built off of Frank Kermode’s work The Sense of an Ending which sought to undersand the belief in the death of society at the end of the century.[8] As part of this death and rebirth Fascism sought to target what it perceived as degenerative elements of society, notably decadence, materialism, rationalism and enlightenment ideology. Out of this death society would regenerate by returning to a more spiritual and emotional state, with the role of the individual core.

I remember bits of it (I was only 10 at the time). The backstory of The Handmaid’s Tale started that way. “They blamed it on the Islamic radicals, at the time.”
Another AH standby that I should have mentioned: Using the 25th Amendment to remove an incapacitated President. Bill O’Falafel is currently recycling claims that WH CoS Don Regan’s aides considered it late in Reagan’s Presidency.

Restoring/remaking/recreating some lost golden age is central to most reactionary political ideologies. They are fundamentally opposed to progress and change, they tend to believe the current system is corrupt or otherwise unfair and must be replaced with a more pure system, usually similar to what they believe existed in the past.

There are three types of conservatives - those who stress prudence (not opposed to change but arguing for gradual change in hopes of avoiding unintended consequences, etc); those who believe things are as good as they’ll ever be (the old “standing athwart history yelling, ‘stop!’” group); and, reactionaries (those that want to turn back the clock). The reactionaries are running the American conservative movement these days.

[Deep breath.]

How go things among the lizardfolk on this wet, cold evening?

Bravo! *claps, stands on chair and holds up lighter*

re: #66 KGxvi

I grew-up with parents falling into the first category. Change is inevitable, but let’s try to manage it to avoid fall-out.

It’s kind of understandable, as their generation endured the depression, WWII, and had to adjust to more changes than any other generation.

Victorious Presidential candidate dies before inauguration (before or after Electorcal College meets)
Faithless elector(s) alter the outcome of a Presidential election

IMO, you could very well see that next year.

The point is that background checks are pretty much bullshit. The Russians contacted US officials a couple of times warning us about Tsarnaev. Apparently the FBI cannot connect the dots even when someone else does it for them.

Cow-orking fits the Indian cultural heritage.

Fantastic moment in college: one of the kids on the Honors College floor was from India, and it was steak and lobster night at the dining hall.

He had the steak, with the justification that it was okay because it was an American cow.

That is absolutely full of win. I might have to tell my cow-orker that.

(By the way, not my original schtick. I got it from Dilbert’s Scott Adams.)

Man, it’s amazing that the Russians contacted the US about the family all the way back when the asylum application was made, saying that the eight year old kid and his fifteen year old brother were scary radical Islam terrorists and the US just completely disregarded that information and granted them asylum anyway.

Yes. You read that right.

You’d have to be insane to want an Article V Convention, because there’s no way of knowing what would come out of it. Those who foolishly dream of such assume that the Convention would just codify their wet dream policies while leaving the rest of the Constitution alone. But that’s unlikely.

Your probably right to a degree. Reactionaries see themselves as restoring something lost. They are the mirror opposite of revolutionaries that are typically of the left (for lack of a better term). So from a certain perspective, they are conservative. But it is one of those areas where the straight line political spectrum doesn’t always work well

An Article V convention? I don’t think conservatives really want to go that way. That means we can write an entirely new constitution. Meaning little things like the Administrative Procedures Act go from being laws to Articles. And all sorts of “court made rights” become clearly defined constitutional rights. Do they really think they’d have the votes to stop that? Or to keep the convention from doing more than one or two things? Because that worked out well for proponents of the Articles of Confederation in 1789

Think of all the ways the nation’s government could be improved:
No more Senate.
No more Electoral College.
Proportional representation.
Equal marriage, equal rights for women, equal rights for all races become unalterable parts of national law.
Complete subsidiarity of the states to Washington - no more federalism.
No limitations on union membership. And on and on.

(And technically, the Constitutional Convention was in 1787.)

Quite a few really had no other way of formally “talking” outside of links to ugly and stupid. Just looking to confirm their fears and loathing, they post idiot shit. I now have less “friends” because if I need to see shit, I just pick up after my dog.

I recently signed up for the first time. Friends = Sister in Law (kids) Brother (brother)

A lot of her friends keep requesting me. It’s like a weird shopping/gathering of people. Ima keeping it verrry simple.

When the application was approved versus when the warnings were received is a difficult concept, especially when one wants to be deliberately obtuse.

There are mixed reports on when the children arrived in the US, but everything does seem to agree that they had immigrated by 2003 at the latest, granted derivative asylum status after their parents were granted asylum status after coming to the US on a tourist visa in 2001.

The Russian warnings were apparently from 2011, per my 30 second Google search.

For those who are curious about the dates involved, and why the asylum checks might not have caught the Russian warnings. Since, you know, they came at best 8 years late.

Not only do we have the most powerful military in the world, if you base it on the total weaponry that a country can bring to bear at any moment, the United States is more powerful that the next six countries COMBINED. The only place that other countries outpace the US is in the number of infantry troops they have on active duty. Every other metric - whether it be airpower, naval strength or total military budget, the numbers aren’t even close.

When I first registered there were still a few hardliners here and that was a popular tactic—throw you off balance by making you go down into a defensive crouch, then knock you over. Which is fair, but then, to return the favor, the USS Enterprise stood alone with her task group against the full might of the Imperial Japanese Navy for several months until the US could rush out some new carrier groups. I think we might be able to get away with less than we have, though I will never settle for less than what we need. I just think the latter number is impossible for anyone to really demonstrate.

I think the breakdown at any given time is something like this: 3 carriers deploying, 3 carriers returning, 3 carriers refitting, and (ideally) 2 or 3 in “hot reserve” status (ready to deploy within a few days’ notice). The issue is that, the navy is down at least one carrier (the retired Enterprise), so that puts a strain on the others.

Spending legislation needed to avoid a government shutdown in December must include Republican policy measures in order to pass Congress, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) said Tuesday.

Mr. Ryan didn’t rule out the possibility of a lapse in government funding when its current funding expires on Dec. 11, saying Republicans will force President Barack Obama to accept some conservative provisions, known as “riders” in the sweeping spending bill.

“There will have to be some riders in this for us to pass it through Congress,” Mr. Ryan said …

OT First World Problem

I spent 3 hours looking for my charger and spare battery for my micro 4/3rds camera. Nowhere to be found. Thinking I may have left it behind on a trip, I just ordered a new charger and 2 batteries from Amazon. Just got word they have shipped.

Now I find the missing charger and battery next to my night stand. Oh well, extras are always good.

Sometimes I could swear there’s a jinni (genie) following me around the house hiding my stuff every chance it gets, then putting it back after I’ve replaced whatever it was.

Jinn (Arabic: الجن‎, al-jinn), also romanized as djinn or anglicized as genies, are supernatural creatures in early Arabian and later Islamic mythology and theology. An individual member of the jinn is known as a jinni, djinni, or genie (الجني, al-jinnī).

They are mentioned frequently in the Quran (the 72nd sura is titled Sūrat al-Jinn) and other Islamic texts and inhabit an unseen world, another universe beyond the known universe. The Quran says that the jinn are made of a smokeless and “scorching fire”, but are also physical in nature, being able to interact in a tactile manner with people and objects and likewise be acted upon.

I am distracting myself from all of this madness with news from the stilted world of frequent flyers. The news today is that American Airlines is falling into line with the other two remaining traditional carriers in this country and shifting their frequent flyer program to be based on revenue instead of miles flown. That means that choosing the cheapest possible ticket (i.e. what 99.9% of people do) will reduce your mileage. This is bad enough, but what is really freaking people out is that miles flown own partner airlines are REALLY being devalued.

Total first world problem, but also the inevitable result of allowing merger after merger. The consumer takes it in the shorts.

The Bosnian population in St. Louis, Missouri, numbers over 60,000, making it the largest Bosnian community outside of Bosnia. Nearly all of the members of this community came to St. Louis as a result of the war and genocide perpetrated in Bosnia between 1992 and 1995. Bosnians were allowed to immigrate to the U.S. as refugees, and St. Louis became a preferred destination due to the availability of jobs and inexpensive housing. St. Louis’s population has continued to grow due to secondary migration of Bosnian refugees from other parts of the U.S.

International upgrades have become an absolute joke at this point. It is entirely possible that outside of summer the cheapest upgradable coach ticket is the same price as the cheapest business class ticket. My suggestion would be to maximize your miles (get the credit card if you haven’t already and do online surveys) and cash them in for tickets.

On United it is possible (but not easy) to go to Europe for 115,000 in business class. I just booked one for next September, being optimistic that my health will allow me to go. It gives me something to shoot for anyway.

I don’t have quite enough to do the tickets for both of us. I haven’t sorted out yet if it would make sense to buy one and use miles or one or what.

At this point, once I use them I’m not bothering with saving them again. Most of them were actually with Continental, when I lived in NJ and flew out of Newark. mr. klys and I highly prefer flying Southwest these days for domestic flights, although Delta gets its share of business too if we can get a reasonable direct (their upgrades to first class are not too horrible) and Virgin America can also be nice.

When we travel internationally we’re generally looking at the international carriers.

I do have enough American miles that I should sort out what we’re going to try and use those for as well, so I can wash my hands of that program.

Again, look at alternative methods of generating United miles. If you are thinking about Europe, I can tell you after exhaustive research in the last month that they have the best routes that add the fewest extra charges to so-called “free” tickets. The majority of American Airlines connections to Europe entail making a British Airways connection at Heathrow which will set you back $490! Last year I spent an extra night in Berlin to avoid this. The train ticket from where I was to Berlin and a hotel night there STILL saved me money!

Having said that, I would highly recommend sorting out your American miles ASAP. The award chart is not getting SO much worse, but you will get the most bang for your miles there if you can get something booked before the end of the year there (to fly anytime in the next 10 months).

Yeah, we have to sort out what our goals are for travel next year, which is part of the issue. My miles expire in May, so I either need to ping them through not-travel or book to use them.

If he brought up David Freaking Carr, he lost his shit.

We don’t know the context of that comment, of course. But it seems likely that NAF’s lawyers asked him about his history of horrible sleazy attack pieces. And he responded with a sleazy attack on a very well-respected New York Times writer. Hard to see how this is going to turn out well for our boy Chuck.

The background checks performed by the actual government are thorough. Unfortunately the ones performed by the agencies that sprung up in the late 1990s have proven to be pretty crappy.

Syrian refugees are subject to far more stringent checks than any other refugees. Most won’t/don’t get approved until after 3-4 years.

Rodents (squirrels, chipmunks, rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, and guinea pigs), rabbits, and hares rarely get rabies and have not been known to cause rabies among humans in the United States. Squirrels may suffer from the fatal roundworm brain parasite, which causes signs that look exactly like rabies

What do you say to those who either are currently serving in the military or served in the past and spew this type of inflammatory rhetoric?

They think they get a free pass because of their military service and denounce anyone who criticizes them as unpatriotic.

Since I’ve served, and in addition, had people shoot at me with bad intent (and fortunately worse aim), I have no compunction about telling them exactly what I think of them.

re: #16 KGxvi

Since I’ve been eligible to vote, we’ve had:

- a sitting president impeached, but not convicted
- a president win an election while losing the popular vote
- a sitting governor of California successfully recalled
- a woman elected Speaker of the House
- an African American elected president

That leaves maybe three or four things left on the “list of things we’ll never see in American politics” (brokered convention, woman elected president (that’s looking likely this time around), member of the Supreme Court impeached)

Also, some people just want to see the world burn.

I must be older than you; I remember a Vice President resigning, then a President resigning, and we got a President who’d only ever won 1 congressional district. (I’m not quite old enough to have seen a President assassinated, and have only a child’s memory of a candidate assassinated — memory is vague, but I think maybe there was a brokered convention that year).

re: #315 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I have trade chat turned off in WoW.

I keep debating giving SWTOR another shot but that requires time that is not spent writing. (Current word count: 25, 864. Today’s goal: 27,400. I’m playing catch-up.)

Writing is good. Fiction is one of my useful fallbacks when real life sucks. Yeah, I know it’s escapism, but if I’m writing it instead of just reading it, I can tell myself it’s productive escapism.

Doing unkind things to fictional beings for the sake of a dramatic plot point can be cathartic sometimes. (Remind me, I need to go research Lord Byron to figure out which year(s) it was fashionable for some of the impressionable young upperclass twits to study the picturesque in their attire…)
