Photo of the Month: NASA’s New High-Res “Blue Marble”

Earth from a distance
Science • Views: 63,495

Here’s a powerful reminder of the beauty and fragility of this planet on which we live: NASA Releases New High-Res Earthrise Image.

“The image is simply stunning,” said Noah Petro, Deputy Project Scientist for LRO at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “The image of the Earth evokes the famous ‘Blue Marble’ image taken by Astronaut Harrison Schmitt during Apollo 17, 43 years ago, which also showed Africa prominently in the picture.”

In this composite image we see Earth appear to rise over the lunar horizon from the viewpoint of the spacecraft, with the center of the Earth just off the coast of Liberia (at 4.04 degrees North, 12.44 degrees West). The large tan area in the upper right is the Sahara Desert, and just beyond is Saudi Arabia. The Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America are visible to the left. On the moon, we get a glimpse of the crater Compton, which is located just beyond the eastern limb of the moon, on the lunar farside.

LRO was launched on June 18, 2009, and has collected a treasure trove of data with its seven powerful instruments, making an invaluable contribution to our knowledge about the moon. LRO experiences 12 earthrises every day; however the spacecraft is almost always busy imaging the lunar surface so only rarely does an opportunity arise such that its camera instrument can capture a view of Earth. Occasionally LRO points off into space to acquire observations of the extremely thin lunar atmosphere and perform instrument calibration measurements. During these movements sometimes Earth (and other planets) pass through the camera’s field of view and dramatic images such as the one shown here are acquired.

This image was composed from a series of images taken Oct. 12, when LRO was about 83 miles (134 kilometers) above the moon’s farside crater Compton. Capturing an image of the Earth and moon with LRO’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) instrument is a complicated task. First the spacecraft must be rolled to the side (in this case 67 degrees), then the spacecraft slews with the direction of travel to maximize the width of the lunar horizon in LROC’s Narrow Angle Camera image. All this takes place while LRO is traveling faster than 3,580 miles per hour (over 1,600 meters per second) relative to the lunar surface below the spacecraft!

So why did Obama make them take the picture of Africa? Questions need to be asked.

The earth image color is just so deep and the image so crisp. May we take better care moving forward.

I was watching some program about deserts or something like that but one of the things that I remembered was that most of the world’s deserts are on or near the same latitudes. If you look at the Sahara Desert in the picture, you can see that even over the Atlantic at that latitude there is a noticeable gap in the cloud cover.

re: #8 SteveMcGaziBolaGate RN

It’s all to do with the Coriolis effect and the latitudes at which you get minimal persistent trade winds. Quoth Wikipedia, since I’m too lazy to think about it myself,

The consistently warm, dry, and sunny conditions of the horse latitudes [ed: subtropical latitudes between 30 and 38 degrees both north and south where Earth’s atmosphere is dominated by the subtropical high, an area of high pressure, which suppresses precipitation and cloud formation] are the main cause for the existence of the world’s major non-polar deserts, such as the Sahara Desert in Africa, the Arabian and Syrian deserts in the Middle East, the Mojave and Sonoran deserts in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, all in the Northern Hemisphere; and the Atacama Desert, the Kalahari Desert, and the Australian Desert in the Southern Hemisphere.

Tides go in, tides go out… you can’t explain that!

Pawn of the Oppressor, just read about your odyssey coming back from Durango (I was born in Durango, BTW). Holy mother of fuck! I’ve driven in snowstorms and whiteouts, but I can honestly say you’ve experienced something I never want to experience. That sounds fucking terrifying.

If you haven’t read about Pawn of the Oppressor’s mind-bending drive from Pagosa Springs, CO to DFW, TX it’s right here.

Oy!

Otherwise I hope you enjoyed yourself in Colorado!

There’s a small irony that as I clicked onto this link my music ticked over to Tom Petty’s “Free Falling”. I have my issues with him but I love so much of what he wrote; this song especially. In context I’m damn near ready to cry.

“I’m gonna free fall out into nothing
Gonna leave this world for awhile.”

I tried watching The Man in the High Tower… but only got a few minutes in. I’m having a hard time buying into the premise.

Especially the part about the Japanese control in the west. Not only was that not part of Japan’s plan, but it could never do that. As we saw in real life, it couldn’t really hold onto the Asian territory it had taken.

In an alternate universe I’d have no problem imagining a US that became an ally to the fascist nations - there were already enough fascist sympathizers in the US anyway. If Japan had not attacked the US I don’t know if FDR could ever have convinced Congress to go to war in Europe.

The use of the phrase “Democrat Party” by the GOP came up on Wednesday’s Rachel Maddow show. I know I’ve asked people here before what’s the deal with the GOP using it as an insult, mainly because it’s so fucking stupid and childish.

So, in a stunning display of enterprise, I typed “Democrat party insult” into Google.

Some good news.

Islamic State fighters have abandoned their last stronghold in Ramadi, effectively handing Iraqi forces control of the strategically important city in their biggest victory since jihadists seized control of large swathes of the country earlier this year.
SNIP
After Ramadi, the army plans to move to retake the northern city of Mosul, the biggest population centre under IS control in Iraq and Syria.

Dislodging the militants from Mosul, which had a pre-war population close to two million, would effectively abolish their state structure in Iraq and deprive them of a major source of funding, which comes partly from oil and partly from fees and taxes on residents.

I don’t know what comes after this, but it is encouraging.

An ‘are’ as possessive has become such a right-wing trope for me because of LGF’s existence, that I am compelled to ask whether such a specimen, apparently in its natural habitat, can also be none other than the Republican Party’s best hope for securing the White House next year.
Haha, is this real life?

A Terrified Trump Throws A Twitter Tantrum After Bernie Sanders Truth Bombs His Lies

Includes video clip from the Fox Business Republican presidential debate.

During the debate, Trump said, “But, taxes too high, wages too high, we’re not going to be able to compete against the world. I hate to say it, but we have to leave it the way it is. People have to go out, they have to work really hard and have to get into that upper stratum. But we can not do this if we are going to compete with the rest of the world. We just can’t do it.”

And another video clip the next morning on Morning Joe:

Trump said, “We have to become competitive with the world. Our taxes are too high. Our wages are too high.

I was watching some program about deserts or something like that but one of the things that I remembered was that most of the world’s deserts are on or near the same latitudes. If you look at the Sahara Desert in the picture, you can see that even over the Atlantic at that latitude there is a noticeable gap in the cloud cover.

you’ll also notice that the break isn’t even. The world wears its clouds like a Florida retiree with its pants pulled up above his belly button.

Trump needs to fact check his memory again. He was just bitching about how wages were too high. Now he’s complaining they’re too low. And the same people who were cheering him on when he said wages were too high will now cheer that he’s saying they’re too low.

Of course, the folks cheering loudest are the low information voters that are clueless about most everything, so this is no different.

Also, lest we forget, there’s Trump’s brilliant plan back in August for auto worker wages:

Trump, the surprising early front-runner for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, this week suggested a novel way to lower wages even more for Michigan’s autoworkers.

Send Michigan’s auto jobs to states where people are happy to work for less, he says, then bring the jobs back to the Great Lakes state once people here are desperate for any work, at any pay level.

Trump lives in a bubble in which he can literally say anything and not pay a penalty. We know this because he says things that are diametrically opposed to earlier statements, and none of his followers say, “Wait, what?”

Two months ago, he said our wages are too high to compete in the world. Now he says our wages are too low, and despite the existence of video with him stating the former clearly and unequivocally, he calls anyone who reminds him of it a liar. This is beyond Gingrich’s ” any ad which quotes what I said on Sunday is a falsehood.” This is out and out disconnection from fact.

Ahead of the next session, Gallegos and Espinoza have introduced House Bill 55, consisting of amendments to the Human Rights Act and the New Mexico Religious Freedom Restoration Act, to allow discrimination against LGBT persons provided that discrimination is “substantially motivated by religious belief.” If it becomes law, New Mexico would join Arkansas, Indiana, and Mississippi among states equating social discrimination with the free exercise of religion.

[…]

House Bill 55 is a mere 10 pages in length and leaves a great deal of latitude for a hateful person to deny essential services to people. It is one thing, and bad enough, to refuse to sell a person a hamburger because they don’t affirm your conditioned ideas about gender. The bill also permits serious oppressions such as denial of medical services. Gallegos has claimed, against common sense, that this will reduce lawsuits.

What these leaders fail to understand is that hate is not a freedom. Hatred oppresses not only the victims of discrimination, but the perpetrators themselves, who feel their identity and integrity are threatened by the presence of those who are different. To become fully human this fractured sense of identity and citizenship must be healed.

Yeahbutt…

Powerful great rich men like The Donald are expected to have many wives with multiple dalliances on the side. It’s all about what is accepted for big powerful Republican business tycoons.

Big Bill Clinton is none of that. He’s a preachin’ do-good Democrat so anything he does is bad, two-faced and sexist.

It’s all about what is in the heart. If you’re supposed to be a dirt bag then it is okay. If you are from the do-good side well, you just have to be good.

But joking aside. Yeah the Clintons have had their issues. But you know what? They stuck it out. Hillary stuck with him and Bill hung in there. To me, that says a lot about them and their relationship.

Trump tosses relationships aside like used cars. Dude hooks up with younger women and parades them around like, well, the new car. He’s got no room to even attack on this topic. But, full speed ahead Donald.

Keep telling what the topics of a debate will be so Hillary can get ready. I do believe Hillary already has a good idea you are going to go low. I think she is more than prepared for it. I hope Trump likes others going low too. Lots of skeletons in those big Trump closets.

I wonder if he thinks he can buy off Hillary and her campaign to keep those closet doors shut? And much of what Hillary will be able to use against Trump is public record. I also bet there are more than enough people that have been screwed by Trump and are ready to get even. It will be hard to deny all that.

Okay, now I’m absolutely serious about proposing that any cop who shoots an unarmed person gets jailed automatically. Right now, there seems to be no real downside for them for shooting just anyone, and significant potential upside. When they go into a situation, on the one side they have potential death, and on the other…what? Having to go get a job someplace else? MAYBE?

How about we make it so that if you think somebody’s armed, or going for a gun, and you shoot them, and you’re wrong, you go to jail for the rest of your life? That way, there are actual consequences to your actions. Because it sure doesn’t seem like there are any now.

They also said the cops were told it was a dangerous situation with a possible active shooter.
