The science behind the Flint water crisis:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

From the abstract:

RESULTS:
Incidence of elevated blood lead levels increased from 2.4% to 4.9% (P < .05) after water source change, and neighborhoods with the highest water lead levels experienced a 6.6% increase. No significant change was seen outside the city. Geospatial analysis identified disadvantaged neighborhoods as having the greatest elevated blood lead level increases and informed response prioritization during the now-declared public health emergency.
CONCLUSIONS:
The percentage of children with elevated blood lead levels increased after water source change, particularly in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Water is a growing source of childhood lead exposure because of aging infrastructure. (Am J Public Health. Published online ahead of print December 21, 2015: e1-e8. doi:10.2105/AJPH.2015.303003).

Trump blames Tony Perkins for ‘2 Corinthians’

Washington (CNN)Donald Trump says it’s Tony Perkins’ fault he said “two Corinthians” instead of “Second Corinthians” during a speech at Liberty University this week — a mistake that raised questions about his biblical knowledge as he courts evangelical voters.

The Republican presidential front-runner said in an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon Wednesday that Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, had given him notes on what to say when he visited the evangelical university in Lynchburg, Virginia.

“Tony Perkins wrote that out for me — he actually wrote out 2, he wrote out the number 2 Corinthians,” Trump said. “I took exactly what Tony said, and I said, ‘Well Tony has to know better than anybody.’ “

Trump’s pronunciation of the Bible verse drew laughter from the Christian audience — but he downplayed it, saying his Scottish mother would have said “two Corinthians,” as well.

“It’s a very small deal, but a lot of people in different sections of the world say two, and I’ve had many, many people say that to me. My mother, as you know, was from Scotland, and they say two,” Trump said.

I doubt anyone here will take that bet. It’s nearly a foregone conclusion — and I daresay, a subtle way for Obama to tweak his critics’ noses.

Sky Masterson: One of these days in your travels, a guy is going to show you a brand-new deck of cards on which the seal is not yet broken. Then this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the jack of spades jump out of this brand-new deck of cards and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you’re going to wind up with an ear full of cider.

I know. It felt kind of Fridayish at work today to me. We got the last of the inventory completed, the numbers went to the accountant. Because of the weather we didn’t have anybody hanging out at the shop, so we all sort of cleaned up our respective areas of operations. I can actually see the top of my desk again, and not just one little corner.

I think a diet adjustment is in her immediate future. Her shelter eating habits are bad for her where there is plenty of food. Vet did warn us.

It was a bit slickery this morning, and a couple of inches of snow on the ground, but not bad. What’s going to be interesting is that they are predicting another storm for us starting Friday, early in the day, and they are now saying 5-8 inches of snow (I sure as hell hope not).

Seeing a lot of tweets about Winter Storm Skittlebip XXVII. Oh the humanity!

I’m aware that big snows like that can wreak havoc in such a densely populated areas. It still cracks me up watching it all happen. Where I’m at we’ve received over 50 inches of snow this winter, up in the mountains is closer to 200 inches this winter. Then again, we are not densely populated and we are well-equipped to move a lot of snow around. I grew up in the mountains of Colorado and I never had a snow day in school, not a single one.

The constitutional text provides that a president, unlike other elected officials, must be a “natural born citizen.” This language could not mean anyone born a citizen or else the text would have simply stated “born citizen.”

I mean, it’s not like the Constitution was written in archaic and obtuse terminology or anything, hello Second Amendment.

re: #34 Great White Snark

Beautiful kitty! I’m particularly biased towards Manx kittehs having had a few myself. Our last girl, Bobbi Cat, passed away just over two years ago. While she wasn’t much of a hunter she absolutely owned our property. I never saw her back down from an animal intruder, be it rival cat, raccoon or dog, even pit bulls. She never backed down once and I only saw her go off once (on a pit bull, it gave up and ran away yelping), most times her ‘body language’ did the speaking for her. I remember the first time she faced down a dog (a pit bull, of course) like it was yesterday. I was in the garage and heard a low, guttural yowl that seemed to take forever to end. The garage door was cracked open (up) about six inches so I stooped down and looked under the door to see the back of Bobbi Cat and the front end of a dark pit bull I had never seen around the neighborhood before. I was about to yank the door open when she squatted down, pissed and let out what I can only call “the hiss of death”. Here she was, this four and a half pound cat, ready to take on a pit bull that could snap her up in a second. The dog looked at her like she was nuts, backed off and trotted away…lol!

I never worried about her again. :)

Our little Manx, Bobbi Cat…

Night before the great DC Snowpocalypse, the one that froze the Metro, our Army team flew into National and holed up at the Holiday Inn at the Hoffman Center. Next day, we trudged across the parking lot and continued the work we had started at Ft. Lewis. We were in the small minority of Feds that got in to work that day, and did it from 3000 miles away.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The storm watches/warnings are now up for the entire NYC metro area. NYC proper, Long Island, and parts of NJ are under blizzard warnings (which requires only that it be snowing and winds of 35mph or greater - whiteout conditions).

Bergen County is expected to get 6-12 inches, which isn’t that much, but it would be the first significant snow of this winter (we’ve only had trace/dustings until now).

Right now, it looks like the real deal snowfall is set to hit around the DC metro area - they’re predicting record snows. The GFS model for snowfall, which the Jeff Masters’ blog embedded suggests that Virginia near DC metro could see 3-4 feet of snow (assuming 10-1 ratio between snow-liquid). That’d be epic snows.

I can handle a foot of snow. I’ve even dealt with 2-3 feet of snow (blizzard of 1993), and more recent storms have dumped 12-18 inches.

3-4 feet? Yeah, that’s a challenge.

And this storm has the potential to affect more than 50 million people from KY/TN through VA on up to CT.

Now, whether this storm lives up to the predictions still has to play out, but when it’s done, we’ll get to compare it to other historic storms

This is so funny…funny in a way that I want to laugh, but I can only cry.

As Palin ploughs on, Trump’s teeth finally make an appearance on the campaign trail. As disturbingly white as those teeth may be, it’s preferable to his pursed mouth that looks like he’s about to kiss a live salmon.

“Trump’s candidacy, it has exposed not just that tragic ramifications of that betrayal of the transformation of our country, but too, he has exposed the complicity on both sides of the aisle that has enabled it, OK?”

And now, Palin totally falls apart and starts speaking as though a tiny man with a cattle prod is silently electrocuting her underneath her podium while she tries to finish her remarks. “Well, and then, funny, haha, not funny, but now, what they’re doing is wailing, ‘Well, Trump and his, uh, uh, uh, Trumpeters, they’re not conservative enough.’” Christopher Dorner’s manifesto made more sense than this. I haven’t seen a speech this bad since the first Police Academy movie.

A whole bunch of 007 and knockoff movies have conditioned us to expect it and approve of it.

Honestly, I don’t think she was drunk (possibly high, but high as in something she does all the time, like a drunk who can handle liquor better than others). She is always (and has always been from my knowledge) a very poor speaker, and when she gets in front of a crowd, it just gets louder and more frenetic.

Personally, I think saying she’s drunk or high gives her an out for her utter ignorance and innate hatred of an awful lot of Americans. The woman is a raging c**t to her very core.

He sent it from his university account.

re: #133 Joe Bacon

I lived in Chicago during the winter of 78/79 when then-Mayor Bilandic only plowed the streets of friendly wards. It was a bloody mess. For a couple days I couldn’t get out of my apartment building because of the drifts.

Made the decision to finally listen to my Grandma and move to Los Angeles. First day I was here, Grandma had me go pick tangerines off of her tree for breakfast. In January, 70 degrees outside…Never regretted moving…

His inability to handle that freak snowstorm that fell on a Friday rush hour in January of 1979 sealed Bilandic’s fate. The resulting public outrage was so great that with the Democratic primary less than a month away not even the Chicago Machine could prevent his defeat by Jane Byrne.

As an aside, in March of 1979 after losing the Dem primary but before leaving office Michael Bilandic went on a shopping trip at what is now Macy’s but was then Marshall Field’s flagship location on State Street in Chicago. While there he was quite literally run into by a toddler who happened to be Yours Truly. I don’t remember that happening of course, but my mother remembers and still tells the story at times.

I’m just waiting to see who my Tea Bag neighbor will endorse since he took his Ben Carson magnet off his ride. He enjoys a public pension, which no one in the future should have. And Social Security, which we cannot afford. And is as dense as a wall. Come off as a nice guy, got along with him for years, decades. When his crackhead VA guy from down the street interrupted a mailbox conversation last year or so, and went on like Rush on meth, I finally couldn’t take any more and spoke out. It’s put some distance between us. Told him last month or so I liked the ACA, completely unsolicited, as he would do to me, and I could see the jaw muscles contract. He would never consider the life he has now is owed to a pension and SS. He should be a nice guy. Hell I hugged him years back when he had prostate cancer and was welling up, feeling his mortality. I do not dislike him pre se, but for the life of me cannot figure out why he acts this way. Who drilled into his head? Told me the Tea Party was people “just like me and you.” I told him, “No. Not like me.” And there are a lot like him all around me. When a conversation starts off with “I was watching Hannity last night, and…” I just try and point out the hypocrisy when I get an opening. I still hear Sharon Angle sneering “You’re a man. Why do you need to pay for maternity?” And the crowd cheers. Not like me.

You don’t even need the water. I used to trickle isopropyl alcohol down my keys and into the lock, push the wet with alcohol key in and out a few times with even more alcohol and the ice is melted and displaced by the alcohol.

Found that all out by reading the ingredients in the little spray lock de-icer they sell auto stores/departments. Main ingredient: isopropyl alcohol.

Your car and one of these would make a very inefficient emergency power plant. They come in an array of sizes and prices that would run a simple pump. (I’d use a parallel deep-cycle battery with it if it looked like a long siege.)

Thank God! The newer VWs I’ve owned use only electronic keys now. The older models were notorious for freezing up solid.

You never know where there might still be some older cars with classic locks, like in the warmer non-road-salting areas of the south where some cars last longer.

Christian Post:

“…According to the IRS, charities fall under 501(c)(3) tax exemption status, which means such nonprofit organizations, including churches, synagogues, temples, mosques, etc., are not required to pay federal taxes and can receive tax deductible contributions. For churches, much of their contributions come in the form of offerings and tithes. A tithe is generally considered 10 percent of one’s income. Churches, classified as public charities by the IRS, need not explicitly apply for 501(c)(3) status to reap its benefits.”

Some of us haven’t stopped calling them domestic terrorists, especially since the Nevada Bundy Ranch standoff. Sadly, we don’t get to make the media call them that, despite meeting all the characteristics of being a domestic terror group - engaging in violence or threats of violence to further a political agenda.

The threats of violence are present.

The use of force has been shown - through taking over the NWR.

They’ve engaged in multiple instances of vandalism, theft, and other damage to the NWR and also to utility property. They’ve also engaged in acts that might have caused damage to priceless Native American artifacts at the refuge (or buried on the premises).

And they’ve prevented everyone else from using the facility, which completely violates the nature of a NWR - to preserve the area for all people to use and enjoy under conservation rules.

I think a lot of land in the west was given away, piece by piece, to anyone willing to work it and live there. If they had done that land give away along with keeping the land out of the state, that would have left those who did settle it without a state to claim.

I don’t know the actual reason, but doing that would lead to tension between the states that adjoin that land. Each of them would be pressuring the federal government to allow the state to be extended to cover that land.

By having the states not have any gaps, and then retain federal land within the states, there is less cause for shenanigans.

True, although one of the incidents in the Little House series is that Pa gets kicked off land in what will become Oklahoma (if memory serves) due to federal/Native American negotiations over reserved land, so I think that the land grant/homesteading process happened within the context of larger blocks of land being thus allocated.

Anyway, I was just wondering if someone happened to be an expert in 19th-20th century land allocation politics :)

To give full credit to Palin, she’s not blaming the experience of war itself (which makes sense, because otherwise how could we ever have any of that lovely war stuff?) - she’s blaming Obama’s uppity attitude towards returning right-wing war-loving people who thus feel confused and alienated, which in turn makes them beat their wives.

I wonder how Ben let him down?

Nyet  Jan 21, 2016 • 10:57:21am

So I’ve been reading the Litvinenko inquiry report and have already been disappointed on a couple of points.

1. Owen writes:

4.4 On the same day, President Putin made comments to the media about Mr Litvinenko’s death with what Professor Service described as, “a verbal levity that border[ed] on the macabre”. For example, President Putin observed that, “the people that have done this are not God, and Mr Litvinenko is, unfortunately, not Lazarus.” 2

This statement is quoted in the sub-chapter “Enemy of the Russian State?”, striving to show that a certain section of Russians saw Litvinenko as an enemy. Without context this statement seems to imply something about the killers of Litvinenko.

Of course, the context was cut off, whether deliberately or out of stupidity:

With regard to Litvinenko’s death note, in commenting on this Putin did not contain his emotions. “If such a note appeared before the death of Mr Litvinenko, then the question arises: why had it not been made public earlier, during his lifetime? […] And if it appeared after his death, then, of course, is there any need to comment on that?”

“Those people who did it - they’re not Lord God, and Mr. Litvinenko is no Lazarus, and it’s a pity that such tragic events as the death of a person are used for political provocations” - he concluded.

The “this” in Putin’s quote is not L’s death. It’s the post-mortem publication of his letter in which he accuses Putin of his impending death. It’s the people who published the letter after his death that are not God, they can’t resurrect L to verify that he indeed wrote that letter. The statement was made at a time when the cause of death was not yet known, and Putin even pointed that out in the beginning of his statement.

2.

4.31 Mr Litvinenko researched and wrote Blowing Up Russia with Mr Felshtinsky, who had helped him and his family escape from Russia. The subject of the book was the apartment bombings that had taken place in Russia in September 1999. Enormous bombs had exploded, several days apart, in four apartment blocks. Nearly 300 people had been killed, and many more injured. The blame for the bombings had been officially attributed to Chechen separatists; this formed an important part of the context for the start of the Second Chechen War shortly thereafter. Mr Putin was Prime Minister at the time of the apartment bombings, having been promoted from his position as Head of the FSB in August 1999. The reaction to the bombings and public support for the war was one of the factors that assisted his political rise in the following months, culminating in his election as President in March 2000.
4.32 The theory that Mr Litvinenko and Mr Felshtinsky proposed in their book was that the apartment bombings had not been the work of Chechen terrorists at all. They asserted, rather, that the bombings had been the work of the FSB, designed to provide a justification for war in Chechnya and, ultimately, to boost Mr Putin’s political prospects.
4.33 On the evidence I heard, the book was more than a political tract - it was the product of careful research. Professor Service’s view was that the two men had “credibly investigated” the issue and, although their contentions about it had not been “proved 100 per cent,” he considered they were more likely than not to be accurate. He said that: “the Felshtinsky and Litvinenko book piled up the evidence pointing a very damaging finger at the FSB and its involvement in those explosions”. 24

The book is actually a hodgepodge of half-digested conspiracy theories that does not come close to establishing its thesis. It’s no different than your average 9/11 truther brochure.

This Service guy seems to be a bit of a hack.

That’s great. It has been almost 2 years for my wife. But they still haven’t taken the chemo port out so we are still kinda wary that more chemo will be needed. Not to mention that the initial chemo treatments had to be suspended halfway through because she needed to have her right foot amputated (she is type 1 diabetic and been dealing with that for 50+ years, which the lowered immune system from chemo and the diabetes let an infection get to the bone) and then resumed after she healed from the amputation. Then there was the heart attack and double bypass surgery. It has been a rough couple years for her.

Because States (and people who live in States) have Senators and Members of Congress. Federal Land is generally unoccupied (except DC, and the Territories).
