I keep wondering how Rubio on meth and Red Bull would play in a general election while Hillary keeps reminding people he has one of the worst voting records (missing votes) in modern Senate history.
It’s really pretty amazing that republicans in Iowa chose a guy who want to end ethanol subsidies. They’re willing to shoot themselves in the foot ecomomically so that some ‘other’ can get screwed worse.

And those unreliable supporters will be hard to turnout in later states where he hasn’t had the same amount of time as he has had in Iowa and NH. It can be hard to throw together a ground game together in a short time and it’s hard to get a bunch of ideolgically and demographically homogeneous volunteers to speak with people that aren’t just like them.

re: #86 HappyWarrior
He does know the 13th amendment is still in effect right?
Today is the 151st anniversary of Lincoln signing the 13th ammendment:
National Freedom Day, always observed on February 1st, celebrates freedom from slavery. It also recognizes that America is a symbol for freedom. It honors the signing by Abraham Lincoln of a joint House and Senate resolution that later became the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution President Lincoln signed the Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865. It was not ratified by the states however, until later on December 18, 1865.
A former slave by the name of Major Richard Robert Wright, Sr. created National Freedom Day. Major Wright was looked upon as a great leader in the community. It was believed by Major Wright, that this day needed to be celebrated.
Because of Abraham Lincoln’s signing the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865, February 1st was chosen as the day for National Freedom Day. On June 30, 1948, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming February 1st as the first official National Freedom Day in the United States.

Yeah a lot of unknowns. Likewise, I think that’s why you have Sanders poll better too. There’s probably some stuff on him that could be a hindrance. I really think the GOP establishment looks at Marco and thinks hey here’s an immigrant’s son and first term senator like Obama. Let’s run him and we’ll get the same thing. The difference is Rubio isn’t anywhere near as intelligent or thoughtful as President Obama is. He’s as you said a lightweight little twerp.

I dunno if Kasich has that many skeletons. Condescending dick though.
Kasich might not have many personal skeletons, but if he starts moving up, the true story of his “accomplishments” in Ohio should come to light. As I’ve mentioned, plunderbund.com has been keeping track of little Johnny’s nasty crap since Day 1.
Does anyone have a number on how many people came out for D candidates vs. how many came out for R’s? Which party brought the most people out?
I refuse to listen to a Cruz speech. I’m out.

I really wonder what a Bloomberg 3rd party run would do to the race.
Honestly, I don’t know what really sets him apart. Like with Perot, you had that he was anti-NAFTA. What issue makes Bloomberg unique from the Dem and Republican candidates that could impact the race.

Christie’s passed Huckabee in that vital fight for ninth place. And Hillary’s lead is now up to almost a percentage point! Woo hoo.
Danarchy, Reuters has been polling Clinton/Sanders - Trump/Cruz - Bloomberg/no Bloomberg combinations over the last week. Bloomberg consistently draws 9-11% of the vote and knocks the Democrat’s margin down by a couple of points.

You know if it wasn’t for that class, she very likely would have faded away in Alaska and been just another also ran in this or the 2012 primary. She should be grateful to the GOP establishment for being stupid enough to take a chance on her.
Do the various “suspensions of campaign” mean no more JV debates?
That would be sad, because there was no better illustration of the clown-car nature of this cycle. I mean, I didn’t actually watch them…
The state of Iowa also spoke for Huckabee and Santorum.
If the word “oleaginous” didn’t already exist, it would have to have been invented for a moment like this.

You are correct.
Still disturbs the hell out of me that a Nazi apologist was winning GOP primaries as early as 1996. I mean damn makes me wonder how Pat’d do now. Robertson finished second to Dole in the Iowa caucus, 37% to 25%. He’d win three other caucuses, Hawaii, Alaska, and Washington state. Not the ones you’d expect given the relatively low percentage of Christians in those states.

I disagree with Cruz on just about everything (though he told Texas Monthly that he thinks our drug laws need to be reformed), but he is no idiot. According to sources quoted by Mother Jones, his first questions to college aged women tended to be “What is your IQ?”.
Not kidding.
One girl driving a car he was in demurred, and he pressed on it, asking what her SAT score was so he could correlate from that.

A little perspective:
— Michael Ian Black (@michaelianblack) February 2, 2016
Iowa’s population: 3.1M
Cruz’s total: 48k
Cruz won with the support of about 1.5% of Iowans.
@NateSilver538
The fact that there are three fascinating stories coming out on the Republican side tonight — Cruz winning, Rubio rising and Trump failing — is a little bit of a blessing for Hillary Clinton. Even on MSNBC, with its Democratic-leaning viewership, the Republican race has been the lead story for most of the night, instead of how close Bernie Sanders has kept pace with her.
Sometimes I actually like Silver’s insight more than I like his mathematical acumen.

For me what I consider is A) what he’s overcome, B) what he’s been able to change, and C) what he’s improved. He overcame a bad economic and FP situation. He’s been able to restore our image after Bush trashed it in much of the world, done more for LGBT rights than any President, and gotten millions of people insured. And finally the unemployment rate is drastically down. Honestly if Obama had been given a sane opposition, he easily would have been even more successful IMO.

Or the meeting that Cantor, Ryan, McCarthy, and the other assholes had the day that he became President where they planned to handicap him as much as possible. Really, his opposition has been some of the nastiest in history. It’s not ideological with them. It’s personal. They’re threatened by the very idea that a black man is called Mr. President.
The other difference is that the Republican Party establishment know that they can control Rubio somewhat. That isn’t the case with either Cruz or Trump - and both of those two cater to what would be best described as the nationally unelectable lunatic factions - the Tea Party/evangelicals for Cruz and the hardcore nationalist/alternative right for Trump.
It’d be awesome if Bernie folks could just love their Bernie without transforming Clinton into a bizarro comic-book villain caricature.

He ripped Trump a new one as well, with glancing blows at other Republicans and Bernie for simplifying FP. I’ve been impressed with Hagel since I got to meet him as part of a young journalist thing in 2005. He was still a Republican Senator then but one I knew was one of the more reasonable minded men in the party due to his war experiences. Gates also slammed how they’ve been approaching FP. I think a lot of old school type Republicans are horrified by how simplistic today’s Republicans approach FP.

I’d honestly like some examples of Rubio not being an asshole. Look at how he responded to the President’s Iran deal with such dishonesty. He clearly shows time and time again that he places his narrow minded ideology above the interests of his country. He also loves to play both sides of the immigration debate so he doesn’t get yelled at because he’s too chicken shit to actually take a strong position on way or the other. Say what you will about Donald Trump, he’s honest about where he stands on that. Rubio wants the nativist vote but also wants to play cute by bringing up his immigrant parents. He’s sick.
