When do we get to the fun part, when Hitlery carves off Trump’s yuge manhood and hands it to him on camera? //
The Flint disaster is a prime example of the end result of modern GOP governance. Democrats should talk about it at every opportunity.
@HillaryClinton also calling for the resignation of Michigan’s governor. Boy he is never going to invite these two back again. #DemDebate

Seems like there’s two a week now. They don’t “debate” anything though.
At least this one is in Flint? That’s good. This is one time where I wish Obama WAS an evil Kenyan commie dictator, because he’d have rounded up everyone responsible and had them shot or sent to farm snow*.
*farming snow is my imagined equivalent of “counting trees” in Siberia.
Sure, appoint a city manager and then blame “bureaucracy.”

It’s either Obama’s fault or it is too early for the blame game, he hasn’t decided yet.

Since when has it ever been too early to blame Obama?

A bit like the Ford risk management of Pinto gas tanks.
re: #42 JasonA
As a business owner, it’s one of the things that makes me spit-take about the whole “run government like a business” line.
You design a project, then create both funding and staffing projections to get the job done right within a projected timespan.
The mandate of the EPA and the FDA isn’t altered…people haven’t voted that in. Yet the people doing the accounting and staffing are cutting in way that make the “job” harder to do, take longer, and each failure means costs. This is not good business.
re: #16 Backwoods_Sleuth
Snyder is attempting to shift blame from himself where it rightly belongs to others. I’m now wondering how long it’ll be before he tweets, “OBAMA’S FAULT!!!!” I sent him a tweet and added a #1CowardlyNerd hashtag because he is trying to avoid taking primary responsibility for something preventable that happened on his watch. I remember when dems talked about Flint in a previous debate, his tweet was asking us to not assign blame to anyone. Party of personal responsibility? I think not.

Charles Johnson,
I feel bad that I wasn’t able to start watching this from the beginning.
I want to continue to reiterate that I totally respect somebody if they engage in a reasonable, fact-based evaluation of the two Democratic candidates and then come to the conclusion that they think Sanders is more representative of their views or would be a better candidate for them to vote.
There is just a frustratingly large population out there that wouldn’t say the same of a Clinton supporter, and that’s really grating.

I get the feeling Sanders would be willing to rant and rail about how the internet killed off Borders if he had the opportunity. Yeah, that’s a real bummer, and people lost jobs and I really am sad that they suffered, but by most objective metrics the system we have now simply works better. Proclaiming you’re going to put that genie back in the bottle is simply magical thinking.

Sam Harris was describing an extension of the situation that you mentioned. What happens in the future as technology displaces the need for labor? Wow. Bernie Sanders really came off badly in that exchange about gun manufacturers.
He’s on tilt. I’ve been there myself in the casino, and it will only end when his pile of chips, or checks from the BernieBros, is completely gone.

I agree, he definitely could have done a lot better, than he did. Hillary is just pounding him on gun control.

The fact that Bernie Sanders was arrested fighting for desegregation is actually pretty impressive. He is willing to stand up for what is right even if means risking his well being to do so. That’s a big plus for Bernie.

The fact that he did absolutely nothing for civil rights in the 52 years between then and now, rather less so. He loses the nonwhite vote by downright Republican margins, and his inflation of his extremely peripheral role in the CRM is probably a big reason why.

Can somebody sum up the gun control exchange?
I wish I could explain Bernie’s, but I really can’t.
Hillary was classic soft stepping Democrat. We need to look why we need guns, should we have certain types of guns, implement everything we can about background checks, etc.
It remains a topic we really can’t talk about. Political death for both parties.

re: #185 Targetpractice
MLK was my cousin through marriage. My mom and Coretta were cousins through their great grandparents. She and the kids used to come to our family reunions in Tuscaloosa. There’s one coming up this August. Having said this, it amazes me when some others try to “share” in his work as if they were right there on the front lines with him in every endeavor. I’m not trying to disparage Sanders’ civil rights creds. His work is laudable, but most of us who lived through the era and had much more at stake than he did/does, revere MLK as more than someone to hold up to appeal to blacks for votes. IMO, fighting for the civil rights of all Americans [minorities, LGBTQ persons, atheists, etc] is something that goes beyond elections and should be ongoing. I like candidates that I don’t have to guess where they stand on civil rights at any time. If they want my vote, it takes more than paying lip service to me. It takes, as I said, a demonstration of ongoing advocacy.

More interesting to me will be Tuesday’s votes. Michigan will be a clear test to see if Kasich can get close to Trump’s turnout there. Today Kasich brought in The Terminator to Columbus to try and get out a big crowd…. it was an ok crowd. re: #305 Nyet
I disagree. Ted Cruz’s religion is, for example, very relevant.
Heh. That’s a good answer that leaves me sputtering.
1) A candidate’s religion _should_ not be relevant
2) unfortunately when that religion is driving him in very anti-democratic directions?
3) then it does become relevant.
The real question is where and when is that trip line? Especially in the US where, as is noted above, “No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” That is a statement no other western democracy has held to and is, perhaps, one of the most important definitions of American Democracy. It’s very important for us “US” to be careful about where that line is because of this.
I am religious. I am also far more terrified of a Cruz presidency than a Trump one. Trump is only a Mussolini wanna-be. But Cruz? Cruz would like to make Torquemada jealous. Still here in America we have chosen to be more careful about these arguments - pro and con - than others have been willing to be and it remains both our strength and our weakness.
re: #306 Feline Fearless Leader
You’d think we would have learned after the followers of the Rabbit God and those of the Duck God annihilated each other.
Alas there have to be survivors for any lesson to be passed on…
Answering the religious question is an important test of political skill. The goal is to say nothing anyone will remember.
re: #321 William Lewis
“No religious test” no more applies to a debate question than banning someone from a private forum infringes on free speech. This is not an ethical principle, it’s a prohibition to make laws that would institute religious tests.
Otherwise, I agree, religion should not matter as long as the risk of it influencing the candidates’ decisions negatively is negligible (as is the case with Bernie and Hillary).

But we also all know that a POTUS candidate answering “No one”* to that sort of question would be committing political suicide.

Just got back to Lexington from Columbus(about 3 hr drive) My son participated in the Gymnastics events at the classic today. We drove up this morning and as we pulled into the parking lot, I see a Kasich campaign bus. I start joking with my wife about “he must be trying to get an endorsement”. Few hours later…
Cool. Good to have you in the city. Hope you had a good time. That event has gotten big!
re: #291 The Vicious Babushka
Didn’t Jesus say something about not making big public displays of religiosity?
Yep. It’s one of the most conspicuously ignored lessons in our teachings. The only thing more ignored is the only time he talks about what God really wants us to do (Matthew 25:31 - end) which is to take care of those unable to help themselves.

Sorry, but Bernie Sanders’ talking point about colleges being “tuition-free” is just ridiculous. It’s never going to happen.
If it doesn’t happen, it is because we choose for it not to happen. Effectively, every A highschool student in Italy gets all the college she can stand.

This. I’ve been arguing it repeatedly here - we are building and running far too many carrier battle groups. We do not need anywhere near as many as we have much less are building.
We can cut the number of carriers drastically and spend an insane amount of money on things that build the nation while not even slightly impacting our defense. Because we are spending. Way. Too. Much. Now.
We can cut our defense spending by 50% without even noticing any difference in our position in the world. That money is far better spent elsewhere.
So, apropos of nothing, I had a nice day today. Weather was nice, mid 40’s and sunny. The snow from the other day was melting (saving me the trouble of shoveling the last of it), and my brother-law-called me up and invited me to the shooting range.
Finally got the chance to try out my new pistol, a Beretta Neos .22 target pistol I had treated myself to as a 2 month quitting smoking reward. Threw a $20 red dot sight on the Neos and spent about 90 minutes happily sighting it in and putting holes in paper (exactly where I wanted to no less; very accurate!).

Totally agree. But the reality is, with America’s current priorities, tuition-free college is simply never going to happen. It would mean a major re-ordering of national priorities and major defunding of the military-industrial complex. And even though that would be a correction that’s long overdue, I just don’t see it happening in our lifetimes.

Quite aside from the number we actually need to keep in service, from an engineering perspective, it looks like we need to be building nuclear carriers at approximately the rate we do in order to preserve the industrial base and institutional knowledge necessary to build the damn things in the first place.
I think we blow more money than we need to on being Team America World Police, but there are other directions I’d look first for savings.

Most of the older blacks I know, and that’s a lot, voted for Hillary last Tuesday here in GA, just as I did. Their kids tend to like Bernie, though. Bernie saying his blind spot is “not having any blacks at his rallies” won’t bode well for him, if these young black millennials find out about it. IMO, he shouldn’t be making comments of this sort, not if he wants to attract more blacks to attend his rallies. Just my opinion.

Disagree. There are ways to provide make work and training for them that does not cost as much as actually building yet another needless carrier.
And that’s without going anywhere near the argument that we should forget how… O_O

Don’t overlook the fact that a college education (or lack thereof) is a powerful distinguisher between classes. There are a lot of elements in our society who would very much like to keep those distinctions in place. Allowing ‘those people’ a “free ride” upwards is something they fear immensely.

I don’t think I agree with that, but then we end up with dueling credentials and other stuff that doesn’t belong on the wider internet in the first place.
There’s also the (much more pervasive) viewpoint that government spending, be it military-industrial from the left or “strapping young bucks” buying their T-bone from the right, is money somehow set alight. A whole hell of a lot of jobs, white and blue collar both, spent on this sort of construction. I wish quite a bit of that money were directed toward civil infrastructure, but it’s not a complete piss-away.

My math is horrible! It’s actually closer to 17 cents a day. Still, a pittance all things considered.
So, before I go for the night, here’s a bit of musical frustration I have…
Went to visit my son at his facility today. In the family room was a white board next to the piano that had on it a depiction of 12 bar blues (with a quick IV in the second bar and a I V for the last 2 bars in the turnaround). Now, the musicians here (guitarists especially) will probably know what that all means but John was asking what that meant. And what galled me was that we had no blues songs in common - I tried singing several standards and he looked at me with a great big “Huh?” in his eyes. Are we really losing the blues from pop music or is it just getting hidden behind the usual production crap? Or am I just an idiot who can’t teach music (and that is seriously meant. It’s quite probably I’m stupidly missing something vital even as I try to teach him “Sweet Home Chicago”. )
I wonder if I could have done better with my guitar in hand? A7, D7 E7 in the usual places for a 12 bar in A? At least I could have demonstrated some of the rhythms.
Frustrating to say the least

I actually don’t think I could vote for a candidate who hangs it underhanded. That’s just wrong. When family comes to visit and somebody hangs it underhanded, my thought is that they’re surely doing that just to piss me off ‘cause no sane person wants it dispensed from the rear.
What happened tonight? Whelp, we found out that Bernie isn’t a single issue candidate, he just think “Wall Street” explains all issues. And he wants American manufacturing and union wages back, but he doesn’t seem to know how to make it happen except by saying it louder. Yet somehow he voted against the auto bailout. And that Hillary is damned smart and tough.
