re: #2 Dark_Falcon
Hello Dark_Falcon! Can I interest you in voting for Hillary Clinton on 8 November?
I’m thinking that the disintegration of the R’s as a Party is too early to expect. The fact is, they have the control of enough State legislatures that they will direct redistricting on the State and local level for the US Congress and State Reps and Senators in 2020, perhaps beyond. And that means that the US House will be very slow to change.
Gerrymandering has legs. Texas is a 55-58% R voting state, but the State legislature is almost 70% R, and the US House even more lopsided. Even if the State goes to Hillary this cycle (Hah!) because Independents, Dems, disgusted suburban R’s, and a huge surge of black and brown voters (who finally go to the polls) vote against The Beast from Mar-a-Lago, the local State and US Reps, despite being ninnies, feebs, and mouth breathers, will still be re-elected.
On the State level, the R’s have had a better ground game since the mid-90’s nationwide. At the US HoR level, they’ll be OK. So I wouldn’t write off the R’s just yet.
Dammit.
Please, let us have a new Era of Good Feelings!
So thoroughly had Monroe reduced party politics that he essentially ran unopposed in the 1820 presidential election. The Federalists ran no candidate to oppose him, running only a vice-presidential candidate, Richard Stockton. Monroe and his vice president Daniel D. Tompkins would have won reelection unanimously through the electoral college, had there not been a handful of faithless electors; one presidential elector cast his vote for John Quincy Adams, while a handful of electors (mostly former Federalists) cast votes for a number of Federalist candidates for Vice President. It would be the last presidential election in which a candidate would run essentially unopposed.

Just a thought. Working exclusively against Con Man Donald is a better thing than actually sitting all this out. Working for HRC need not be required right?
DF, you can’t make the argument anymore that the GOP is the party of conservatism. So much of its agenda is reactionary, even radical. You simply can’t be a radical conservative.

Well, unless the Libertarian Party somehow surges to overtake the GOP, we’re pretty much left with a two-party system, as we have been for the overwhelming majority of our history.
I am not sure how you can work against Mr. Trump without voting against him. And until such time as a new credible third-party arises, there is really only one other choice.
So yeah, if you “sit this one out” you are one of those doing nothing and allowing evil to triumph.

re: #22 teleskiguy
I agree. My thinking about her is that the country would stumble along the path we’ve been taking for 16 of the last 24 years. It isn’t always ideal, but having some whackjobs come along and yank the steering wheel isn’t necessarily a conservative outcome.

I think the Burn and his bros will move the D’s platform to the left. Regardless of what you think of him, he made some palpable hits on Hillary’s positions, and rightly so. Elizabeth Warren, or someone of the same pragmatic Progressive bent, may be the future of the Party. In the meantime, HRC is the only transitional option, given that the House will will still be controlled by the fuckwits.
I guess I’d ask DF if he could actually hold his nose long and hard enough to pull the lever for the clown-penis sociopath rather than the comparatively statesman-like Libertarian candidate.

I am a city councilmember (well, in a city of 128). Ethically, I don’t believe as a government representative I should encourage people not to vote. Too many people, both military and civilians throughout the nation’s history were injured or died trying to ensure the right to vote was protected and expanded to all.
As the only Democratic elected politician in my county, I can certainly endorse Hillary Clinton. (I doubt Mrs. Clinton would give a hoot about me endorsing her, but still.)
So I will hold forth on what I believe if asked (I think Mr. Trump is acting like a fascist), and why I believe that, but I will not encourage people to not mail in their ballots.

I suspect that after eight years of obstruction of Mrs. Clinton, they would still obstruct Mr. Obama. The party has been hijacked by its most extreme members, and until they do something about that, we get stuff like obstructing Supreme Court nominees.
They have been working for decades to break the government. They’ve succeeded with the Legislature, they are still trying to hold Mr. Obama to one term, and they are gumming up the Federal court nomination process in a way never done before.
I don’t think it would matter which order Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton went. They are not interested in either; they are interested in delegitimising government itself. They want a libertarian utopia like Somalia.

That’s how suburban houses are built in South India. Concrete with few windows. It’s very strange if you’re not used to it.
An interesting part of building science is that only recently have people really started talking about how there shouldn’t be a standard material profile for the manifold. Not actively opposing Trump is the same thing as condoning his promised racial persecution and ethnic cleansing. That’s true of the Busters and it’s true of everybody who refuses to support the only person who’ll be standing in Donald’s way.
I know, it’s unfair, because stuff and things, principles or whatever. I don’t care. You either take an active stand against the kind of racial hatred Trump represents or you’re guilting of turning a blind eye to it, and turning a blind eye to racism perpetuates it.

Book editor here: The Chicago Manual of Style, Edition XV (the official style guide of my publisher) notes the following on starting sentences with conjunctions:
Paragraph 5.191: There is a widespread belief—one with no historical or grammatical foundation—that it is an error to begin a sentence with a conjunction such as and, but, or, &c. In fact, a substantial percentage (often as many as ten percent) of the sentences in first-rate writing begin with a conjunction. It has been so for centuries, and even the most conservative grammarians have followed this practice.
Charles Allen Lloyd’s 1938 words fairly sum up the situation as it stands even today.

I’m not going to cheer people who want a domesticated Trump for a stage show involved Fae Wray, like Mitch McConnell.
Because all of the above are still maneuvering to harness Trump…and, more importantly, harness the people who have so much anger and so little respect for democracy. And eventually they will get their Trump+ product manufactured and rolled out, and it will turn out exactly as good as those sharks the scientist Samuel L Jackson genetically engineered to be smarter and meaner.
Anyway, all these hypotheticals are making me sleepy.
Sweet dreams y’all.

Moral of the story is, if a comment is something you ever think you might want to come back to, favorite it. Even if the use of the word favorite makes you feel weird.
Night all! Nice discussion tonight. Can I respectfully suggest that we not pile on to board members whose views are not consistent with the general concensus? If the comments are beyond the pale, that’s one thing, but respectful disagreement is a different thing.

If I could vote for Fritz Mondale, I can vote for anybody who’s not a Republican. I’m a single-issue voter now. “Not Republican” is my only requirement. Sucks, but here we are. They fucking ran fucking Ronald fucking Reagan, the D-list movie actor. For President! Trump is no worse than that.
And before somebody says he was Governor of California—so what? He shouldn’t have been within 100 miles of that job either. He was qualified for literally no elective office whatsoever. Just like Trump.
And I always like to throw in James Garner’s quote about here:
“Ronald Reagan wasn’t qualified to be governor, let alone president. I was a vice president of the Screen Actors Guild when he was its president. My duties consisted of attending meetings and voting. The only thing I remember is that Ronnie never had an original thought and that we had to tell him what to say. That’s no way to run a union, let along a state or a country.”

This happens because [1] you don’t argue, you repeat shit without thinking (see: your attempt to use Bork awhile back, which is a classic of the “don’t fucking read, just say this” form); [2] you fall back on standard wingnut insults when you feel uncomfortable; [3] you do that thing of imagining that your feelings and personal relationships lend stuff veracity, but nobody else’s feelings and personal relationships lend stuff veracity.
Oh, and [4] you want to both mock the base and use their support as a mandate, but not be called out on that contradiction, while [5] indulging in your own wingnut beliefs that you imagine are somehow superior because they come from the 90s.
re: #97 The Ghost of a Flea
I still think the idea that Trump is something distinct from the rest of the GOP is getting overplayed. His policy isn’t that far from the sixteen he beat; it’s his tone that’s troubling so many people.
And as one Republican strategist pointed out:
“Trump’s stomach-churning behavior would be manageable if his poll numbers were holding up.”

Oh, I agree! But advocacy doesn’t need to be toxic. That’s what the other side does, as is epitomized by the Trump style of politics. We should be better than that. Facts, facts, and more facts are useful weapons.
Granted, many folks are not interested in facts, and deny they are actually correct, but this is a fact-based community and you don’t have to be a dick to reinforce them. Just repeat them. Facts are facts. Eventually, the mouth breathers and fuckwits get that their arguments are hopeless and go away.
re: #110 austin_blue
I’ve seen one too many BBL to think there’s any interest in facts, sorry.
If the behavior came from anyone else, a lot of people would have much less tolerance. Instead, we get lots of lectures towards those who have lost patience about how we should have more, never mind that some of those folks (again) would be harmed by the party he advocates for (rather mindlessly and sans any facts).
Again, your mileage can (and apparently does) vary. But I’m not going to lecture people who have reached out in good faith only to be ignored time and time again. Community is a two way street. I see very little assumption of good faith in the opposite direction, especially when it comes to treating the other side like human beings impacted by actions.

There was an episode of Newsradio where a kid was on trial for selling Jimmy James a bunch of fake memorabilia. One item was the skull of George “Goober” Lindsey. Lindsey takes the stand: “Mr. Lindsey, is this your skull?” Extends his hand: “May I?” “Of course.” Feels it all over with an intent expression, hands it back: “No.”
The judge raises the gavel: “I find the defendant…” The defense attorney says: “Tubalcain.” “…Not Guilty!” That’s how that’s supposed to work, I think.

<crickets>
He has no money, people. Dead in the fucking water. See those white lines in the water screaming toward your boat? Those are torpedoes. That’s not a good thing.
One thing I wasn’t aware of until just now is that there’s a huge difference between the efficiency of candidate spending and PAC spending. Candidates can buy ads at a much lower “preferred” rate whereas PAC have to pay the same going market rate that any business has to pay to promote their brand.
This will not help make up the astronomical gap between Clinton’s $42 million cash on hand and Trump’s $1.2 million cash on hand. Candidates pay the lowest unit price for advertising, while parties and outside groups pay the expensive going rate. This means that candidate money goes much, much further — as Romney, who leaned too hard on super PACs in 2012, learned the hard way.
I had never heard about this difference in ad rates before so I looked into it. It really only applies 45 days before a primary or 60 days before a general election, and technically only to Federal candidates but stations tend to give local candidates the same deal. Still, it means that should Clinton continue to out fundraise Trump, and unlike his campaign much of her fundraising apparatus already exists as sunk costs, she’ll have a massive advantage over him in ad buying power starting the second week of September.
re: #140 goddamnedfrank
Forgot to mention that another reason Clinton’s cash on hand number matters so much is that she can go back to many of those same donors for up to another $2700 each in the general election, because everything she has saved as of now is Primary money that rolls over. Once the general election officially starts every donor’s individual contribution limit resets because as far as the FEC is concerned it becomes an entirely new campaign.

re: #142 Timothy Watson
Interesting read, wasn’t aware of the laws and regulations relating to that.
This has been an interesting campaign to the extent that a lot of the primary rules and election funding rules have come to the foreground of people’s attention.
I have no problem with closed primaries, I think that one should decide on one’s affiliation well in advance of the campaign to reduce ratfucking. And remember, registering for a particular party does not imply any degree of support or membership, just a decision to participate in that party’s primary.
As for delegate selection, that is up to the individual parties. These are not election campaigns in the sense that we conduct them in November, rather they are more like a marketing survey to see which candidate has the most popular support. But there are other factors that go into selecting a candidate.
re: #34 teleskiguy
Hillary as President will be a good thing. The *woman* part of her having that much power will reverberate for generations to come. I’m sure of this. I heard Christopher Hitchens talk about women in power on a YouTube video and I read his treatise “God Is Not Great” and the most important things I can fathom in that YouTube *and* his book is that the whole of humans will live better lives if women are empowered.
EMPOWER WOMEN!!!
That’s my favorite concept.
Not sure if I agree with that. While it will be historic for a woman to be President and I love that, we already know that there have been some awful women leaders, i.e., Margaret Thatcher. It’s good that Clinton will be a left-leaning, sensible President and I am proud of her for accomplishing so much in the face of rightwing hostility.

Won’t make any difference in the long run. Trump will be Trump.
It’s like this incredible logic trap the GOP has set for itself. They have a moronic con artist for a (probable) nominee. But they can’t just give him the boot and move on to candidate No. 2 — Cruz is just as bad. And Kaisich or Paul Ryan may seem nicer, but their policies are pretty insane, too, and just giving the nomination to either of them would explode the party. Fascinating stuff.
And yet… And yet the GOP still owns so many state legislatures. Wtf is wrong with your country? I mean, I’ve seen some stupid local politics around the world, but the GOP is getting to Venezuela-level stupid.
re: #150 LastYearsMan
It also works because they have gerrymandered the vote enough to guarantee them a majority of seats in places where they do not necessarily command a majority of votes.
And yes, there are places in America where people are poorly educated, poorly informed, bigoted and just plain stupid and proud of it.
America has a long history of anti-intellectualism, probably stemming from our cultural and intellectual inferiority complex regarding Europe. 4 way race? Who else are they polling with Trump and Clinton? Gary Johnson and Jill Stein? Because each of them will get ~1.
As it is, the pollsters are ratfucking the Clinton campaign by still running polls with Sanders in head-to-head with Trump. If they’re doing that, why not add Rubio and Cruz back into the mix, considering that both of them have the same chance at the nomination (near zero). Sanders has less of a chance at winning the nomination than Rubio or Cruz, whose chances are improving slightly given that the Trump campaign is essentially out of money.
His latest FEC filing shows next to no money on hand, and he’s got all of 30 staffers on the payroll. Yeah, some might argue that this shows the strength of his campaign that he did so on such a lean payroll, but that’s not how elections are won. You need GOTV, and Trump’s showing he’s nothing but a vaporware candidate who has convinced his supporters but no one else. The more people realize this, the more they’ll come around to Clinton.
Trump’s so poor (now a #TrumpSoPoor hashtag), he couldn’t pass the credit rating to get a place in his own buildings.

Trump’s campaign is going to suck the life out of down ticket races - he’s clamoring for a bailout from big money donors at a time when those donors would need to help other races. Trump’s toxic enough that candidates aren’t going to fundraise with and by him. That reduces their takes as well - and makes it more difficult.
All in all, a good thing. It improves the chances the Democrats retake the Senate. Still don’t think it turns into a wave with retaking the House, but there’s a bigger deficit to make up there.

This is the only way “defending yourself” with all these guns people insist on accumulating for that purpose can possibly work. You need to shoot first. Shoot at every noise, shoot at every shadow. Shoot early and often. If you wait for someone to actually attack you, they will always have the drop on you. Always.
Keeping the safety off isn’t good enough. Keeping your finger on the trigger isn’t good enough. 360º vision isn’t good enough. Instantaneous reflexes aren’t good enough. They’ll always know what they’re about to do before you see them do it. Always. You need to shoot anybody or anything that makes you the least bit apprehensive. And shoot to kill!

Luke Michael Roberts, of Elsmere, was charged with theft, impersonating an officer, criminal trespassing and disturbing a lawful meeting after police said he entered the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati and disrupted prayer services, reported WCPO-TV.
Police said Monday the 37-year-old Roberts entered the mosque in West Chester Township, Ohio, about 11:25 p.m. June 14 — two days after a deadly shooting in Orlando — and shouted “Jesus is lord” while Muslims prayed.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A utility company and environmental groups have reached an agreement that will close California’s last nuclear power plant, ending the state’s nuclear power era.
The state’s largest utility, Pacific Gas & Electric Co., and the groups said Tuesday that the Diablo Canyon plant will close by 2025. The accord would resolve disputes about the plant that helped fuel the anti-nuclear movement nationally.
The 30-year-old plant supplies 9 percent of California’s annual power. The agreement will replace it with solar power and other forms of renewable energy.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A Republican candidate for Congress in Florida has launched a contest on his Facebook campaign page to give away a semi-automatic rifle on Independence Day.
Greg Evers said Monday that he is giving away an AR-15, because terrorist incidents are on the rise. The announcement comes barely a week after a shooting at a gay nightclub killed 49 people in Orlando, which is about five hours drive from the Florida Panhandle congressional district Evers seeks to represent.

Evers is one of five candidates running in the Aug. 30 Republican primary for the seat being vacated by Rep. Jeff Miller. Evers’ chief rival is state Rep. Matt Gaetz, who has also received an A-plus grade from the NRA.

From her garden on Kastelorizo, Eleni can now see the EU border agency ship searching for new migrants and reminisces about what happened in 1945.
“My parents told me that I was tied with a rope and lowered on to a raft. But as they were letting me down, my father saw that it was full and ordered me back. As soon as I was brought up, a woman jumped on the dinghy. It capsized and all the children drowned.”
[…]
Other Greek refugees had fled the Nazi occupation to Syria. They were mainly from the island of Chios, a few kilometres off the Turkey coast.
“The Germans were here and we were hungry. I was three back then,” remembers Marianthi Andreadi. “So we left for Turkey illegally and from there we took the train to Al Nayrab camp in Aleppo (Syria).”
[…]
While Greece’s returned refugees feel a bond with the new wave of displaced people, age makes it difficult for them to meet.
But they hear new stories from Greek TV and Marianthi Andreadi believes that despite her country’s financial problems “we’re doing what we can”.
From their balconies, the former evacuees watched Syrian refugees coming off packed fishing boats. “It’s like a mirror to the past,” says Maria Chroni. “The hardest thing is having to witness the arrival of children.”
Eleni points out that the Greek evacuees made it back home and life returned to normal. She is not sure if the same will happen to the Greece’s new refugees any time soon.
The poor meet the poor, coming and going.

— CBS Philly (@CBSPhilly) June 21, 2016
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A veteran Pennsylvania congressman was convicted Tuesday in a racketeering case that largely centered on various efforts to repay an illegal $1 million campaign loan.
U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah was found guilty of all counts against him, including racketeering, fraud and money laundering. His lawyers had argued that the schemes were engineered without Fattah’s knowledge by two political consultants who pleaded guilty in the case.
The 59-year-old Democrat had been in Congress since 1995 and served on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. But he lost the April primary and his bid for another term.
Prosecutors said Fattah routed federal grant money and nonprofit funds through his consultants to pay back the illegal loan.

Of course Sec. State. has nothing to do with the trade imbalance, but being the head of a company that chose to have their clothing line overseas in places like China does have something to do with that trade imbalance.
By offshoring jobs to China, the US has to import those products (paying for them, creating the imbalance, all while Trump reaps the profits of having his stuff made overseas). That’s lost American manufacturing jobs in the clothing industry. Jobs that Americans would do… but for Trump not giving them a chance.

— Raw Story (@RawStory) June 21, 2016
Republican National Committee Chief Strategist Sean Spicer asserted on Monday that “everything is fine” with Donald Trump’s presidential campaign was even though it reportedly has only $1.3 million in the bank.
“I think when you look at the entirety of where our party is at and where our efforts are at combined with the party and the campaign, it’s the Republicans that are far ahead,” Spicer argued to CNN’s Kate Bolduan. “I appreciate everyone’s concern over the state of our party, we’re doing just great.”
“He’s got $1.3 million in the bank,” CNN co-host John Berman noted. “There are county commissioners that have that much in the bank right now in a campaign. Are you saying that’s a good place to be?”
“That’s a false narrative,” Spicer shot back. “Donald Trump has largely financed his entire campaign by writing checks, he can continue to do that. If Trump wants to get the number at $100 million, he’ll write a check and pump it up.”
“It’s false to say that he has $1.3 million,” he continued. “If he wanted to get that number up in 2 seconds, he just strokes a check and it’s up.”
“Has Trump told you he’s going to write those checks?” Bolduan asked.
“He has the option!” Spicer insisted.
“The option doesn’t matter if he’s not going to use it,” Berman observed.

The author of a new tell-all book about Hillary Clinton could never have seen any of what he claims — he was too low-ranking — say several high-level members of Secret Service presidential details, including the president of the Association of Former Agents of the United States Secret Service.

Not that it will matter to the morons who hang their hats on that kind of crap.

Is that heading towards actionable language?

Under Trump, it will be down to dime-size
LOL Trump is getting hammered in the replies to his “personal Hedge Fund” Tweet. Not even the usual nazibots to support him.

I would say so. But how long to the actual line is another question.

Can’t you just feel the changes in Trump’s campaign now that Lewandowski is out?!
Who knows, maybe Lewandowski was actually keeping The Don in check. Now that he has his ‘yes-family’ in charge he may go full-on ape man.

I can tell a cold front is coming into the area. The skies are brighter and clearer than the last few days, the wind is up and the temp is dropping.

My dad died on my birthday two years ago. Since I was his first child and born on Father’s Day, it seemed entirely appropriate because we were very close, but still rather depressing. Yes, I still miss him terribly.
re: #76 Anymouse
The same applies to ending sentences with prepositions. The famous quote attributed to Winston Churchill applies:
The quote is nonsense though since “up” in “put up” is not a preposition but merely an inseparable part of a phrasal verb.

“Operationally, one who has the working knowledge of how things are done there would realize that certain of those statements do not coincide with the operational plan,” said Jan Gilhooly, AFAUSSS president and a 29-year Secret Service veteran.
The group’s statement, which POLITICO obtained in advance of its release, very carefully calls Byrne a liar.
“One must question the veracity and content of any book which implies that its author played such an integral part of so many [claimed] incidents. Any critique of management by one who has never managed personnel or programs resounds hollow. Additionally, why would an employee wait in excess of ten years after terminating his employment with the Service to make his allegations public?” it reads.
The closest contact that Byrne could have had, according to Gilhooly and others, is seeing the president or the first lady pass in the hallway — far from the intimate access he would have needed to catch Bill Clinton in the act or see Hillary Clinton fly into the cursing rages he now writes have convinced him that she doesn’t have the “integrity and temperament” to be president.
“There could be a circumstance where a uniformed officer might be in the proximity. It’s not as if it never happens,” Gilhooly said. “It is possible, but not on a continuum.”
The former supervisor of the presidential protective division said that at best Byrne is working from office rumors that he’s cinematically written himself into. People spend decades on presidential details and don’t rack up the number of amazing scenes Byrne claims to have witnessed in just a few years as a uniformed officer.
