On March 8th, 2013, Snarky Puppy and a host of special guests convened at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke VA. The project was to record a series of live performances in audio and video that would bring attention and benefit to the ongoing work of the center. The Jefferson Center is a non-profit arts organization that is revitalizing a key neighborhood in Roanoke with the restoration of Jefferson High School and the renovation of the Shaftman Performance Hall. The hall brings world class music to the local community through the Music Lab, providing education and recording space for local children.

The Music Lab at Jefferson Center is working daily to pull from every social and economic class of the Roanoke community and create the next wave of real, human musicians. They host low cost or free after-school programs for any interested young people filled with visits by guest artists, private instrumental instruction, and recording training. Wafting out of the little studios and rehearsal rooms on the third floor of Jefferson Center, you can hear Afro-beat in Swahili, hip-hop in Liberian Kreyol, the blues coming from the guitar of a 13 year-old prodigy, and the undeniable sound of young musicians growing. It’s a thing that needs to be supported at all costs across this country, and by purchasing this record, you’ve done it.

A portion of every sale will go to the Music Lab at Jefferson Center.

Interesting to look at Chuck’s friends list on Facebook. I wonder how some of these people feel about being on a list that includes evil white supremacists.

Not to be that guy but pretty much any rifle cartridge rated to take deer will pierce kevlar easily. So, um, technically all large game hunters need that … just not in a pistol cartridge. NIJ Level IV body armor will protect against .30-06, but it requires hard ceramic plates to do that and after one hit the plate is shattered and pretty much useless.

Told MrBWS during our daily Skype call today that I haven’t been watching TV, when he isn’t home, for years. But CSPAN has been on all the time I’m awake for a couple of weeks now.
He said, “welp, it’s politics and that’s what you do.”

I have been a member of the Democratic Party my whole life as well, and it is not above criticism.

At the risk of concern trolling, denigrating one of the Democrat’s primary contenders will not go a long way toward earning his or his supporters’ support.

Does Sanders need to be coddled? No. Just as Clinton was not in 2008 amongst all the PUMAs. Those who choose to go off and write in someone were not likely to vote for the Democrats anyway, but going out of the way to offend people might cause a few to consider staying home rather than voting. The Dems do not need that.

Yeah that and prayers. I am sorry but I don’t think families of victims of things like Sandy Hook want legislators prayers. They want action. I am fine with moments of silence for individual things but it’s meaningless when a legislative body does it.

I’m shocked it took this particular incident. After Sandy Hook I gave up hope. Not that this is meaningful, even if they win a vote. But it’s a start.

This is meaningful. The point is to get the GOP on record by a vote that they support terrorists and mass murderers.

There is no way out of this that looks good to the GOP. If they allow a vote, even if they win it, every Republican that allowed it starting with Paul Ryan will be instantly RINOs to a large portion of the GOP base and especially the NRA.

If they do not allow a vote, then they all can be painted with that brush.

That why we need Clinton to win so we control the SCOTUS.

We haven’t had a truly liberal majority on the USSC since Warren retired. The Burger Court wasn’t as right leaning as the Rehnquist and Roberts one is but the court is in need of a move to the left.

All hands on deck. Time to make sure Trump is defeated soundly. Embarrassingly sound. Thrashed and Trashed. Stomped. She’s Dead Jim!

I disagree about Thomas (not the dumbass part). I think he’s making noises about retiring to gin up the vote for Trump. Two openings on the SC at the start of a Hillary presidency? That will bring all the #NeverTrumpers back on board.

I will give one small piece of credit to Ryan: Everything has lined up so that we’re discussing this during an election, and a presidential election at that. But we need to be bringing it up every time it happens.

Maybe part of Democrats business on the House and Senate floor should be a reading of the people who died by guns each week. About 10 or so a day, on average.

It’s also not the first time a mom has had to get involved:

But that morning, Harry Burn—who until that time had fallen squarely in the anti-suffrage camp—received a note from his mother, Phoebe Ensminger Burn, known to her family and friends as Miss Febb. In it, she had written, “Hurrah, and vote for suffrage! Don’t keep them in doubt. I notice some of the speeches against. They were bitter. I have been watching to see how you stood, but have not noticed anything yet.” She ended the missive with a rousing endorsement of the great suffragist leader Carrie Chapman Catt, imploring her son to “be a good boy and help Mrs. Catt put the ‘rat’ in ratification.”

The next day, Burn defended his last-minute reversal in a speech to the assembly. For the first time, he publicly expressed his personal support of universal suffrage, declaring, “I believe we had a moral and legal right to ratify.” But he also made no secret of Miss Febb’s influence—and her crucial role in the story of women’s rights in the United States. “I know that a mother’s advice is always safest for her boy to follow,” he explained, “and my mother wanted me to vote for ratification.”

The GOP knows stunts like Bo knows football.

Repeal Obamacare? Check. Did that stunt 60+ times. Never grows old, especially since it’s a great fundraiser.

Shut down the Government because Obama didn’t vote to repeal his signature legislation giving millions access to health insurance for first time? Yeah, Ted Cruz, that’s Exhibit B of a stunt. A bad one that cost the nation billions in lost economic output - to the point that even GOP run states were demanding national parks reopen in order to save the local economies there (and yeah, there’s good reason to shut the parks when the rangers are not around - see all the crazy stuff people do, like stuffing baby bison into backs of cars, or get mauled by bears or elk, or engage in vandalism).

No, Democrats aren’t engaging in a stunt here on demanding a vote for gun control legislation. They’re sick and tired of the do-nothing/know-nothing GOP ignoring 30k deaths every year from firearms, many of which could be preventable if sensible gun control were enacted including background checks and changes to existing rules to close various loopholes. No, it wont stop every mass shooting or every single homicide or suicide, but that’s quite besides the point.

A 10% reduction in homicides or suicides or overall shootings is no laughing matter. It’d be a huge cost savings to the nation too from reduced strain on medical care and costs. And justice system costs. And corrections/incarceration costs. Those all add up.

Yeah this party of all parties calling this a stunt is pretty laughable. The thing is the people of the country want it and the Dems are doing their best to show how the Republicans only care what the fringe gun lobby wants to do on guns. I for one am glad to see the Democrats standing up to the Republicans and the bastards that run the gun lobby.

So, now all of a sudden the right wing is latching on to arguments against no-fly lists and terror watch lists as being problematic due to 4th/5th amendment arguments?

Really? This is where we’re at?

Not that we can fix both the issues with the no-fly/watch lists and extend those lists so that anyone seeking firearms is checked against them as well.

Or that we can see what kind of vote and where people actually stand on this in the House (which would show the futility of the Senate moves earlier this week since the House is far less likely to pass anything the Senate would have passed).

No, it’s more of a litmus test on where everyone stands, and this much is clear: Speaker Ryan stands for no one but the NRA. He’s made that abundantly clear with his refusal to even consider a vote.

Before I married my wife, she and her then-husband looked to move from Colorado Springs after Digital Equipment (her employer) collapsed. They did the same, and chose Ponca City, Okla.

After I arrived in Ponca City and married her, wingnut state governor Mary Fallin was elected. My wife sold her house she bought at a fifty percent loss so we could get the hell out of there.

X-Speaker Boener is in his cups tonite for sure. Probably the best bourbon in the house.

Oh heck no! Johnny is kicking back watching CNN and he’s got a big bowl of popcorn he’s munching on when he isn’t laughing his ass off!

It’s amazing how the Republicans the most paranoid about Muslims are in parts of the country that have so few of them. Meanwhile those of us who have had Muslim friends, neighbors, and even family our whole lives, we’re not as paranoid because we’re not stupid right wing assholes who get our information about Muslims form morons like Pam Geller and Robert Spencer and other self fancied Islam experts.

I was in Potomac Mills today for work and I lost count of the number of women wearing hijabs.

Meanwhile, if you come down to Spotsylvania County, where it goes from suburban to rural, you have assholes protesting an Islamic Community Center, which has been in the county for over a decade, moving to a larger facility.

If I have to defend Ben from these people if Trump wins, and then I turn around and kick Ben in the balls, does it still count as a good deed?

Good man

This is the key point - Democrats know they’d lose the vote if called. They want the record to show that the GOP stands opposed to any/all action.

It shows just how the NRA controls the GOP agenda here.

Basically he’s bitching at the House Dems for wanting something that the Senate rejected to pass (pretty rich given that Whiplash has had no problem with the constant ACA repeals) and he’s blaming the FBI for allowing Orlando to happen. He’s a total fucking hack moron. If the FBI had the power that the Congressional Dems want it to have, he wouldn’t been able to buy that goddamned gun and Whiplash fucking knows it but enve though he probably doens’t own a gun himself, Whiplash is dedicated to the cause of guns aboev all else.

Damn—Wonkette appears to have redesigned their site to closely resemble Raw Story with obnoxious autoplay videos and many, many ads. The last thing I looked at on Raw Story had 235 ads blocked on one page—now Wonkette has 150-200 ads blocked on every page. Bummer. Makes the sites just about unreadable.

(For some reason I’m suddenly getting 5-10 ads blocked here most times, WITH a subscription. Not a problem, but it just started a few days ago)

The people of this country deserve to know that the Republican Party would rather serve the interests of the NRA and GOA which don’t even speak for the majority of gun owners in this country than the American people as a whole.

Republicans did votes all the time just to have Democrats on record. They can take some of their own medicine.

I’ll take Republicans being called weak on terrorism too. I am sorry but the Republican Party deserves so much of their own medicine it’s great to see the Democrats giving it to them.

I disagree about Thomas (not the dumbass part). I think he’s making noises about retiring to gin up the vote for Trump. Two openings on the SC at the start of a Hillary presidency? That will bring all the #NeverTrumpers back on board.

I should read the whole thread, but his wife came out and said that rumor was a dead duck.
