Is It Really “Ridiculous” to Say Trump’s “Star of David” Tweet Was Antisemitic?

Well, something is certainly ridiculous here
Politics • Views: 61,126

At his website, Donald Trump has now posted a rather garbled and ungrammatical official statement on that antisemitic meme he tweeted on Saturday.

Trump’s position is that it’s “ridiculous” to claim the image he tweeted, showing Hillary Clinton superimposed on a pile of money with a red Star of David, is antisemitic.

These false attacks by Hillary Clinton trying to link the Star of David with a basic star, often used by sheriffs who deal with criminals and criminal behavior, showing an inscription that says “Crooked Hillary is the most corrupt candidate ever” with anti-Semitism is ridiculous. Clinton, through her surrogates, is just trying to divert attention from the dishonest behavior of herself and her husband.

Here, once again, is the image in question, as it was originally posted by its creator, @FishBoneHead1 — whose Twitter account is no longer active, oddly enough.

So let’s examine Trump’s claim that this image just showed an innocent star shape to evoke a “sheriff’s star,” and wasn’t intended to be antisemitic. We’ll do that by looking at a couple of the other things that appeared in @FishBoneHead1’s Twitter feed before he/she deleted it.

For example, this image of journalist Ruth Marcus (who is Jewish), featuring a grotesquely exaggerated nose.

Or another example, this image of Barack Obama edited to look like a Hasidic Jew (via @pwnallthethings).

Here’s some more evidence to take into consideration: a comment posted by “fishbonehead” for a Politico article a couple of years ago, ranting about “Wall Street and Hollywood Jews:”

I’ll let you decide if it’s really “ridiculous” to say the image Trump tweeted was intentionally antisemitic.

Trump’s social media director Dan Scavino is now taking responsibility for choosing the image Trump tweeted, and he admits he got it from the Twitter feed of @FishBoneHead1.

Who, by the way, is clearly a full-on antisemite.

GOP leaders today ignoring the anti-Semitic tweet while tweeting about things like taxes on Independence Day.

Senator Mitch McConnell and GOP chair Reince Priebus tweeted about Elie Weisel, then pivoted to claim Hillary Clinton is the first presidential candidate to be criminally investigated by the FBI (gotta keep copulating with that chicken).

I think the conclusion is clear.

Also: the guy was a bigot, but making pictures was his shtick, he knew how to use photoshop (or whatever editor he used) and wasn’t some inexperienced intern. He knew what he was doing with that star.

Donald Trump breaks a record, and it’s not a good one

Gallup reports that Trump is more disliked than any general election candidate in the last 60 years. Even Barry Goldwater at his lowest point was not viewed as negatively as Trump is now. The polling organization’s latest survey looked not just at whether people view a candidate favorably or unfavorably, but to what extent.

It’s all about the ratings:

Donald Trump ‘would love to’ talk about birtherism. Here’s why he doesn’t

The Times story offered another possible reason Trump stopped talking about the issue: “Executives at NBC,” which aired Trump’s reality show “The Apprentice,” “privately called on him to tone down his remarks, fearing he would hurt ratings at a time when more than a million African-Americans tuned in every Thursday night.” The newspaper cited “a former executive with knowledge of the discussions.”

Like Hillary Rodham, I supported Goldwater in ‘64. Also like her, I was a teenager at the time.
I remember the campaign used the slogan, “In your heart, you know he’s right,” to which Democrats responded, “In your guts, you know he’s nuts.”

Well, the original post has the producer of the picture at the bottom, the Twitter account of an anti-Semite, so he may very well have lifted it from Twitter.

That’s only a half-explanation though: “I lifted it from the Twitter account of an anti-Semite” would be more accurate.

Exactly but the right wing fundies think because they “support” Israel, I use that term very loosely because Pat Robertson was giddy as hell when Prime Minister Sharon had a stroke that they’re free from charges of Antisemitism. The fact of the matter is as you get at a lot of right wing hatreds of liberalism do have their origins in antisemitism.

The original claim is was it was created in Microsoft Paint and the design was Paint’s default.

Paint has no default geometric shapes, you have to select them.

But all of that is deflection; the issue is it came from an anti-Semite, as much of Donald Trump’s posts do, and the deafening silence from the GOP’s leaders on that issue.

Well, since they are dancing, they probably just covered over the name/link when they pasted the Fox News Poll on another layer in Photoshop. Which was added after the anti-Semite artist created it. Trump’s people probably wanted to make it more legit by adding the Fox Poll stuff. Or, to have Fox to blame it on.

STANDARD LIFE INVESTMENTS UK REAL ESTATE FUND

Due to exceptional market circumstances, Standard Life Investments has taken the decision to suspend all trading in the Standard Life Investments UK Real Estate Fund (and its associated Feeder Funds) from 12:00 noon on 4July 2016.

The decision was taken following an increase in redemption requests as a result of uncertainty for the UK commercial real estate market following the EU referendum result. The suspension was requested to protect the interests of all investors in the fund and to avoid compromising investment returns from the range, mix and quality of assets within the portfolio.

And it also works the other way: a lot of conservatives/Republicans seem to think that “support for Israel” - to be more precise, a slavish and uncritical support of various Israeli government “security” policies - is the sole issue American Jews care about; and every two/four years act surprised when American Jews vote their own preferences (strongly Democratic) - which voting patterns they usually end up “rationalizing” with “explanations” which typically differ from antisemitic tropes only in a matter of degree.

Well, since a significant percentage of them believe the Jews are destined to burn in the fires of the Apocalypse anyway, really the only reason to care about Israel is as the trigger for that Apocalypse. Were I a Jew, I would not find their ‘support’ comforting.

My working hypothesis is that America is in the throes of a turbulent transition towards a post-Christian nation.

Given that a great share of American Christianity has been of the fundamentalist stripe, and a large swath of these are caught up into fantastical ideas of a magical future, and that fantasy includes something labeled “Israel”, it then follows that in becoming a post-Christian nation that our collective views of “Israel” are going to be challenged.

The failure of the late 20th century Apocalyptic themes of Christian fundamentalist America - that is, there in fact has been no Apocalypse - said fundamentalists are discredited in their own eyes.

I think this has added fuel to the apostasy, if I may use that term, we see in young people, whose parents are fundamentalists, who are now becoming “nones” or perhaps those still-rare “liberal Evangelicals.”

On the contrary, we love war. Since 1776 we’ve had one war after another. We’re a very militaristic nation.

Donald Trump has sent a flurry of email fundraising appeals in recent days, though rather than originating from his campaign, some have been sent to addresses on lists purchased from other politicians or groups.

Trump’s reliance on purchased email lists is an indication that his campaign has failed to build its own large database of potential donors, political strategists say, a step considered crucial to competing in a national election.

“At this point in the game, a presidential candidate should have a substantially large house file that is constantly raising money. Acquiring lists at this point suggests they are far behind in building a house file,” said Rob Stutzman, a Sacramento, Calif.-based Republican consultant and frequent Trump critic. “It’s what they should be doing if he’s not going to self-fund, but they should have been doing it a year ago. Poor planning. Sad.”

I’d like to think you’re right about this - I believe the first point is correct: although there will always be a non-trivial number of young people who will swallow the religious-right line: maybe (one would hope) not as many as in the past; but enough to keep the grift going into another generation. Christian fundamentalism, ISTM, is just too well-baked into the social and political culture of too large a swathe of America to ever fade away completely: and the overt politicization of fundamentalism in the last few decades isn’t going to cease to be a major factor in our political discourse for a long time
As for the second point, fugeddaboudit (as they say in Joisey) - “Apocalyptics” have been predicting The End for a LONG time, and somehow, the calculations (especially those etched on the collection plate) always seem to get revised at regular intervals…

File under careless-dilettante-archaeology:

Snapshot: The hunt for old stone

Q. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start looking for artifacts?

A. First, you want to know where you’re searching. You want to find an area where there most likely would have been a camp. You don’t want to go into just any field because some fields don’t have anything. You generally want to get permission. People see someone walking out there - they may not know what you’re doing. Different times of the the year you want to be careful. On hot days I’ve been dehydrated. You want to make sure you have the right gear for the weather.

I can’t think of an example where I wouldn’t want to get permission.

Also, nothing in the article about laws regarding collecting on public land. And not one whit paid to the possibility of disturbing important archaeological finds.
