Donald Trump Is Now Actually Defending That Antisemitic Tweet

Politics • Views: 54,156

I don’t have a video clip for you yet, but at Donald Trump ‘s rally in Cincinnati he’s now defending that “Star of David” tweet attacking Hillary Clinton, that was lifted (in his social media director’s own words) from a racist, antisemitic Twitter user, appeared on an “alt-right” message board, and was applauded by former KKK leader David Duke. Trump now says it shouldn’t have been deleted at all.

And he actually said people who criticized the tweet as antisemitic are the real antisemites. Unreal. He’s screaming his speech, and seems even more unstable and unhinged at this one. It’s still going on; here’s the live feed if you want to observe the insanity.

WASHINGTON (CNN) —Donald Trump is coming to Capitol Hill to rally the GOP troops roughly two weeks before he’s slated to accept his party’s nomination for president at the GOP convention in Cleveland, but the crowd might be a little thin.

“I’ve got a long-standing appointment downtown and I don’t know at what time I can get out of that and get back to the Hill,” Rep. Fred Upton, R-Michigan, told reporters Wednesday.

Colorado GOP Rep. Mike Coffman, one of the House Democrats’ top targets in November, told CNN, “I’m not going to be able to make it. I’ve got a conflict.”

Sen. Pat Toomey, who is in a difficult re-election race in Pennsylvania and has not endorsed Trump, shrugged off questions about the meeting Trump has scheduled with at the National Republican Senatorial Committee Thursday.

“I haven’t checked my schedule yet,” Toomey said Wednesday evening when asked if he’d attend the Trump session. “I don’t know.”

Asked if he felt the need to hear what his party’s nominee had to say, Upton, who hasn’t endorsed Trump and isn’t planning to attend the convention, said about his own meeting, “This has been set up for some time.”

Local pundits here in Nebraska are starting to speak of Mrs. Clinton taking four of our five electoral votes. (President Obama took NE2 - Omaha in 2012, and local polling by newspapers seems to indicate that the tide is shifting in NE1 - Lincoln. Those two districts would overwhelm mine, NE3, and give four of five votes to Mrs. Clinton. I can dream anyway… .)

Well, I am going by my local papers. Of course, polling this far out still doesn’t carry a lot of weight.

As for Nebraska being solid red, there’s that vote for Obama in 2012. While the state has voted red for a long time, it only has five electoral votes in total, so national pollsters don’t pay attention to us.

If Hillary Clinton is serious about a fifty state strategy, it would seem likely she would make at least one campaign appearance here (it has been a long time since a Presidential candidate from either party bothered with us).

Every electoral vote that goes to Mrs. Clinton (even if it is only just the one Obama got in 2012) makes it that much harder for the GOP this time round.

One hallmark of really extreme racist websites is their proclivity for coining new slurs. It is kind of a contest with them, something like puns here.
Spotted today at Free Republic: “ghettopotamus” and its plural “ghettopotami.” This occurred in a discussion of a brawl at Walmart, and refers specifically to the legendary fat minority women who are forever buying vast stocks of lobster and prime-rib with their SNAP cards. Today it was porterhouse. The term met with general applause from the assembled bigot multitude.
Freep still forbids the “n-word” but anything the bigots can invent or dig up from well-deserved obscurity (“quadroon”) seems to escape the notice of the mods.

As a party this is true, yes. But as we saw all too well in the primaries, the Party is not a single rational actor that makes all decisions in its overall best interest. Individual members will peel off, confident (sensibly or not) in their immediate electoral hopes and looking forward to be able to say they were one of the sane ones, one of the first who stood against the evil stupid charlatan, building towards higher office in 2018 or 2020.

US politics is not going to be left vs. right for the foreseeable future. It is going to be the sane vs. the barking mad. We get the extinction level event if the Republicans get full power while they are still barking mad.

To be honest, I am terrified of the nativist trade/economy creature that Trump and Sanders have helped to unearth. It’s awfully hard to articulate in a brief sound bite why the industrial economy of the postwar era is never, ever coming back, and there are still a whole bunch lot of folks who fondly remember those days.

I absolutely think a charismatic, well-spoken “compassionate conservative” could peel off basically the entire midwest if he or she (lol: he) were able to massage the message into a form the Kochs would sign off on.

The Republicans have been working their way towards Trumpism for decades. There is nothing on the Democratic side that is remotely equivalent to the fact-free empire of the Right Wing Noise Machine.

There is also nothing in the Democratic side that is remotely equivalent to decades of pandering to the resentments of the worst elements of US society by fostering and promoting bigotry.

You’d like to think that, but there’s Salon and the Huffington Post, Counterpunch, the Intercept, US Uncut, and plenty of others, pumping out the hard-left propaganda. Except we are Democrats. And we, the Democrats, stand for a lot of the platform. And we, the Democrats, would be pissed if Hillary took a right turn. And we, the Democrats, would revolt if what they’ve (they being the crazy left) been saying about her - which is not true (corporate shill, DINO, etc.), became true.

The overwhelming majority of Sanders supporters are going to vote for Clinton.

Continual twisting the knife to score points “you lost get over it” will drive sane voters to not vote. Those are the ones you want to keep.

Whatever moonbats are frothing at the mouth on Twitter are not going to vote for Mrs. Clinton no matter if you gave them ponies and a rainbow, but all political parties have always had people like that

It would seem to me as a lifelong Democrat (and former Sanders supporter) the goal here is to not drive away the sane voters from voting. (It plays into the magic balance fairy argument that both parties are equally bad.)

There is no shame in being magnanimous in victory. There is a long history of people being punished for being uncaring or sore winners. All that is required from Mrs. Clinton now is to treat Sanders and his supporters respectfully, but focus on the main goal of defeating the Velveeta Raccoon. Like the PUMAs in 2008, the majority will come round.

Ironically, it’s because the industrial economy became more widespread, not that it disappeared. Globalization meant that all of a sudden (or at least within just a few years), nations that had been mostly agricultural and irrelevant to the global economy started to challenge the US and Europe for goods and materials, and started to manufacture with quality meeting and then exceeding ours. It’d have taken World War III to prune them back, and even then there’d be new industrializing nations.

Yeah, Hillary won: acting moderately gracious (even if it’s just acting) doesn’t have much of a downside (it rarely does for winners) in the intra-party sense. It won’t make the Busters happy - but nothing will, so why not humor the non-moonbat wing a bit?

I agree that this would be very dangerous. The simple fact is that the present-day global economy is not working well for most members of society, and there is no apparent political action taking place to improve things. Nobody is proposing real solutions, which creates opportunities for demagogues to exploit the impossible dream of going back to how things were in the good old days.

This has been destabilizing politics, both in the US and in Europe. IMO, this is the common thread linking Brexit, Trumpism and Sanders.

Those fanatical followers he has left that are taking their cues from him, or who harbor so much hatred towards Hillary that they’ll never vote for her need to be fed a steady diet of harsh truths.

Wherever we were before she’s absolutely without question going to be the nominee now, and anybody tearing her down or spreading false equivalences and nihilistic disaffection is playing right into the hands of the most racist demagogue to infect US national politics since George Wallace.

Frank is absolutely right, and his twitter exchange posted above could be repeated literally a millionfold. Allowing Sanders to run has allowed the “alt-left” and proto-Trumpers into the party, and they’ll be hard, hard to get rid of. This is why the UK’s Labour Party, for instance, hasn’t won an election in my lifetime except those led by Tony Blair… and his brand of centrist liberalism is tainted for a very long time to come. Do you want that to happen to Democrats? And don’t say that minorities will protect the Democrats automatically, because they don’t for Labour or most other European left parties or even (until 2015) Canada’s Liberals.

Erik Wemple: Don’t Settle, Gretchen Carlson!:

Here, the Erik Wemple Blog would like to disclose a conflict of interest in this matter: We want this case to go the distance, the better to feast on all the motions and materials that a full-scale discovery could well produce. Civil actions have an extraordinary knack for producing newsworthy material. Just consider the Trump University case, which recently unearthed critical documents on how the outfit sold its wares to the public. Or the suit filed by a University of Virginia associate dean against Rolling Stone, which has unveiled emails cataloging the breakdown of the magazine’s reporting on an alleged gang-rape at a U-Va. fraternity house.

Sunshine of that sort would be welcome in the hallways of Fox News. Like its cousins in the world of TV, Fox News is gung-ho about holding public officials accountable. When it comes to others holding them accountable, well, the enthusiasm levels drop a fair bit. We media reporters tend to receive canned statements, not interviews, when the crises hit. Again, this isn’t exclusive to Fox News and applies across the industry.

To boot, Fox News has shown some relish for pursuing leaks. Look at the case of “Fox Mole” Joe Muto, an “O’Reilly Factor” producer who launched a tell-some-things series on Gawker but was busted by Fox News computer sleuths early in his leaking career. Among his mischief was grabbing some unaired Fox News video, which served as the foundation of a criminal case against him. He ended up pleading guilty to charges of misdemeanor attempted theft and computer tampering. That served as a message to any Fox Newsers who might attempt any unauthorized activity in the media.

This is nearly as unattractive as Bernouts playing the no-true-progressive game. I won’t lift a finger to help Sanders right now, and I’ll probably contribute to his hopeful Democratic challenger when he next stands for re-election, but if Sanders wants to play games arguing actual points of progressive policy rather than dicking around with open primaries or similar bullshit, I won’t deny him that opportunity.

At least in the US, what is most dangerous is the reduced prospects of the middle class relative to the era from about 1945 to 1980. Rising income inequality since 1980 is a real effect.

Since much of this affected middle class is white, racism inevitably comes into the picture, but there are factors in play in addition to that racism.

I’ll be the first to admit that the US from 1945 to 1980 can’t reasonably be repeated (only developed nation not absolutely flattened by a world war), but the political instability inherent in asking a middle class to accept being less well off than their parents remains a factor that can’t be wished away.

Sorry I spelled it wrong, but Bernie’s not going to be worth a nickel in the senate after this election is over. I mean, he got frickin’ BOOed when he visited the house dems today. He’s cemented his reputation as someone that doesn’t want to work to make change that can be put into effect and, if he doesn’t come out fighting for Hillary in the next week or so, his career is baked.

Deservedly so.

Taken out of context … and more magnanimous behaviour.

Sanders eventually responded that the goal was not to win elections. He paused at this juncture, at which point came the boos. “The goal is to transform America,” he said. The Sanders aide said that members in the room applauded at that point.

I didn’t see what happened, though I read there were some boos. Fits right in with the yell from Republicans at President Obama “You Lie.”

Agreed wholeheartedly, and do not mistake my statements as acceptance or endorsement of the shitbag scrap-licking post-Reagan economy I have professionally grown up in, but globalization and international trade are, at most, tertiary causes of its worst attributes.

I see the main root cause of the economic woes as being a greedy oligarchy, and globalization and international trade as being the most preferred tools of the oligarchy to remove the ability of national governments to check their worst excesses.

So globalization and international trade aren’t the primary cause of the troubles, but they are very visible (e.g., job outsourcing etc.), making them natural targets for resentment.

I’ve said a hell of a lot worse. Sanders behavior both during and after the primaries has been absolutely horrendous. Sorry, that’s just how I see it. Flat out lying in order to call Hillary unqualified, feeding Trump that ammunition and refusing to concede are all unforgivable sins in my book. I welcome anybody who is on board now with defeating Trump no matter what, but I’m not about to start praising Bernie as long as he continues to act in the most egregiously dangerous and despicable manner I’ve ever witnessed from a Democratic candidate for President.

Clinton said Sanders could run his campaign any way he likes. Too bad there are so many Clinton supporters willing to stick a knife in to score “see I told you so” points.

I admit it’s become a lot easier to be magnanimous towards Senator Sanders over the last week or two as it’s become apparent that his eventual endorsement may border on the irrelevant/redundant.

It’s almost started to bend back around from frustrating and become funny. If Hillary Clinton can laugh off a grumpy old man fundamentally, congenitally unable to concede defeat to a triumphant woman, by God, so can I.

Elijah Cummings, ready once again, to kick some Republican ass:

“Republican after Republican praised Director Comey’s impeccable record of independence—right up until the moment he issued his conclusion. Since Republicans disagree with his recommendation, they are doing what they always do—using taxpayer funds to continue ‘investigating’ their baseless claims in an effort to bring down Secretary Clinton’s poll numbers. The only emergency here is that yet another Republican conspiracy theory is slipping away.”

democrats.oversight.house.gov

Or, as Mark Lippman describes it:

As Ranking Member of the Bengowdy Committee, Elijah Cummings set a standard for the rest of the House Democrats to follow. He blew the lid off the proceedings there with a series of must-read bulletins on the Republican plot to stop Hillary.

Cummings is the Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee, too, and when he has something to say, never, ever, cut his mic. He has a big booming voice. Okay, Darrell Issa?

Trump is such an egotistical, control freaky old shit-witted hobgoblin that he refuses to let go of control over his account, and the keeps getting himself in trouble by using it to rebroadcast the praise and racist memes that pour in from his white supremacist fans.

One campaign clearly knows that if they’re not being some variety of funny, insightful, informative, or inspiring all the damned time it’s far better to just shut the fuck up. The other campaign doesn’t get this at all because their candidate is utterly incapable of just letting shit go and not responding when provoked.

“EFF Eric. He’s just upset his side is led by Trump.”

I agree 100%. Erickson seems to have conveniently forgotten his role in transforming the GOP into what it is today. His fingerprints are all over this.

re: #347 goddamnedfrank

One of the things I like about Hillary is she understands the twitter medium and her own limitations enough to delegate that shit out to some razor sharp talent. Trump is such an egotistical, control freaky old shit-witted hobgoblin that he refuses to let go of control over that shit, and the keeps getting himself in trouble by using it to rebroadcast the praise and racist memes that pour in from his white supremacist fans.

One campaign clearly knows that if they’re not being some variety of funny, insightful, informative, or inspiring all the damned time it’s far better to just shut the fuck up. The other campaign doesn’t get this at all because their candidate is utterly incapable of just letting shit go and not responding when provoked.

re: #356 Stanley Sea

BTW, how’s your new pup doing? photos to brighten us all up!

She’s doing well. She is a character! She’s scary smart and so sweet. When she plays with Sam, the two of them sound like they’re going to kill each other and anyone else in the general vicinity. Then they cuddle up together and nap.

She sucks on a blanket like its a pacifier. It’s the funniest damn thing you could ever see.

I’ve tried to upload a couple of pics (I’m on my phone) and I’m getting an Exceeds 500k message. No pics I guess.

We are talking about rescuing a JRT. We’ll find out in a few days.

There’s a canine out there who’s looking for a home, maybe even in danger of never getting a chance to find one.

I agree with everything you said, of course, but this part is why I try to encourage people to not wait to find another buddy.

(Ruffles through Constitution)

Hmm. President appoints. Senate approves. Nothing about the NRA there.

Once again it is displayed that the GOP, ‘true defenders of the Constitution’, would wipe their asses with it given the opportunity.

I’m surprised Trump’ s “digital team” isn’t padded out with Ivanka, a Twitter buddy of Ivanka’s, Don Jr., Eric, the chauffeur, and one of the doormen from Trump Tower. Would be on a par with the rest of his hires….
