On the Second Night of the GOP Convention, Donald Trump Jr. Gets His Plagiarism on Too

Like stepmother, like stepson

The Daily Show tweeted this a little while ago; yes, after Melania Trump’s disastrous plagiarism incident last night, tonight Donald Trump Jr. also lifted whole passages from an article from the American Conservative for his speech, without attribution.

I am now officially speechless.

But let’s not forget that Trump Jr. has some far darker associations recently:

The author of the American Conservative article now says he helped write the speech:

However — there is such a thing as self-plagiarism, and it’s still considered highly unethical.

So, I missed the party. I was working out at the gym and playing child chauffeur.

Here’s what I texted my brother when he warned me that Ben Carson’s speech was immanent:

Dr. Sleepy is going to give us a history lesson about how Muhammad was a gay alien from Pluto, and minarets were gay alien radio transmitters.

That’s actually less crazy than the Lucifer thing, I think.

Also, fuck my “representative” Tom Emmer with a rusty chainsaw for invoking Prince during his delegate announcement. You don’t get to do that, you backwards assmunch. I used to have a sliver of respect for the man, given that he wasn’t Michele Bachmann. No more.

Intellectual recycling is considered fraud in most academic settings. This may not be an academic setting but it’s still not a good look. For one thing it exposes Trump Jr. as having paid a lazy writer to produce an unoriginal product.

Sad!

To use such odd phrasing like that in his own print article and then for someone else’s spoken speech, is fucking weird. That indicates the writer is very limited in his capabilities. YMMV.

Yeah, that’s exactly my point. Someone my age might say something about “bread lines” or other really vague stuff about the USSR; a reference that specific has to have come from someone quite a bit older than him, say 30 years older, as we have seen.

The ‘Begging For Money’ canard is absurd. Yeah sure, a window shows up on the home page asking for donations, and there are ads (highly reputable and geographically specific ads), nothing out of the ordinary for a site that get 100,000 page views a day consistently.

The nice thing is you give Charles money, and the ads go away. Pay for a better web experience, Charles delivers.

And he appears to be self-sustaining. LGF has been around for 16+ years and it ain’t going away.

People think that running and maintaining a website like this can be as cheap as the personal hosting plans like for a low-traffic WP or Joomla site and nothing can be farther from the truth.

Good web hosting and infrastructure that a high-traffic site like LGF can generate ain’t cheap; I’ll wager that Charles shells out in the high hundreds/low thousands (at least) every month to keep the LGF doors open, plus, since this his main focus, it’s also his living IIRC. Gotta keep the lights on and a roof over your head in meatspace too…

my husband’s colleague has given me a “gist” translation which is that she is basically asking him about her relatives’ well being and asking him to tell any of her relatives that he is in contact with that she was OK.

A poignant missive highlighting the ongoing struggles of displaced people to find one another in the aftermath of genocide and the subsequent political reorganization in eastern Europe after the war…

Possibly a more detailed translation tomorrow———NY time zone. :)

Probably not really very serious. I would guess that a very large portion of Milo’s legion of fans are simply 4chan types — shit-stirrers with way too much time on their hands. The name of this one in particular hints at that, though it doesn’t have an anime avatar.

I wish Twitter worked a bit more like Facebook in that regard. You hardly ever come across someone on FB with an obviously fake name. Some people use pseudonyms but that service very much enforces “real names.”

Of course, half the accounts I follow on Twitter are parody/humor, and I don’t know how they’d be affected by rules for that.

There are many factors that make students successful in Grades Pre-K- 12, and among those are parental involvement, the quality of instruction they receive, and the student’s desire to learn, among other things. I can tell Jr. knows nothing about teaching. Someone wrote the words, and he read them. I have former students who went on to play in the NFL and the NBA. There are others who are teachers, doctors, lawyers, nurses, scientists, accountants, business owners, artists, computer scientists, college professors, etc. He knows as much about teaching and public schools as a hamster, which is absolutely nothing. All students are not the same. Some are highly motivated, some are less motivated, and some only come to school to socialize with their friends or to avoid being sent to a juvenile facility. My main point is that just as adults vary, so do kids. The thing I like least about public education in America is that some, like this jerk who has never taught a day in his life and would never accept a teaching job, think they’re qualified to tell those of us who have worked in the field how to do our jobs. Standing on the outside looking in and whining and complaining is a piss poor way to evaluate those in the teaching trenches. I’d like to see Jr. try to teach for one year in a public school. Something tells me he would want out at the end of Week One because he doesn’t have what it takes to do the job.

Yeah, I totally agree. I’m just kind of spitballing here, and didn’t mean forcing people to use real names. Allowing people to use pseudonyms is an important Twitter feature, but there’s probably some benefit in allowing everyday, non-famous users that choose to do so to “self-verify” that they are who they say they are. Almost all of my negative interactions with Twitter users come from people hiding behind fake profiles, and I’d love a feature that would just ignore them.

On this part I can completely agree. It’s a shitty situation. I avoid a lot of negative interactions but that’s in part because I’ve made the conscious decision not to talk about a lot of topics on Twitter. It’d be nice if there was some kind of filter where you could determine what threshold an account needed to meet before it was included in your mentions.

I rode on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight for my 60th birthday. I had a roomette which was fine with me because it allowed me to sleep on the way and I really liked that they served my meal in my roomette. But the menu on Amtrak is rather limited. From what friends have told me VIARail’s service is a notch above Amtrak’s. That’s why I really want to take a trip after I retire.

Yeah, I’m very careful with what I say and who I interact with on Twitter because I used my real last name as my @-username and my full name has been on my profile since I created it. The last thing I need is an army of trolls and malcontents descending upon me, doxxing me, and harassing me and my family.

In hindsight, I should have been more secretive, but it’s at least limited how much time I feel comfortable wasting on Twitter.

Intellectual recycling is considered fraud in most academic settings. This may not be an academic setting but it’s still not a good look. For one thing it exposes Trump Jr. as having paid a lazy writer to produce an unoriginal product.

Sad!

I am willing, at this point, to bet money that the Trump kids were partially responsible for the lazy, incompetent plagiarism in Melania’s speech. They are used to getting away with such trifling infractions and had no idea how detectable plagiarism is nowadays. Hence Trump’s difficulty in firing the offending parties.

But really, there is no one to blame but himself for not hiring competent staff for vetting speeches.

I’m thinking he’s nuts, but saw feathers at the bottom of the can. Yep, dead bird. It must have hit the deck doors and as my Dad opened door, fly right into the garbage can. A little feathers and bird goo clean up to end my night.

It thrived for a time, before the word blog even existed and such things were still novel, but it’s a virtual ghost town now because a combination of unchecked abuse, harassment and toxicity killed the community. Idealists look at free speech principles and the first amendment as if they’re some kind of near holy, unique American societal panacea that was carved in stone and handed down from the Founding Fathers. They think these principles need to be adhered to reflexively and absolutely, utterly untethered from all earthly concerns and applied to situations & environments they were never intended to cover.

Sixty-four percent of Latino voters now hold a negative opinion of the GOP, according to the new poll, up from 48 percent in February. The percentage with a very negative view has risen even more sharply, from 25 percent to a record high 44 percent.

“It is instructive that even in the Disney film, young Ms. Mulan falls in love with her superior officer! Me thinks the politically correct Disney types completely missed the irony of this part of the story,” writes Pence. “They likely added it because it added realism with which the viewer could identify with the characters. You see, now stay with me on this, many young men find many young women to be attractive sexually. Many young women find many young men to be attractive sexually. Put them together, in close quarters, for long periods of time, and things will get interesting. Just like they eventually did for young Mulan. Moral of story: women in military, bad idea.”

There were not a lot of concrete proposals on how to deal with Scottish independence (currency, EU membership, etc.), which I think led a lot of people to vote to remain.

There were also no concrete post-Brexit plans, but that did not keep a majority of English (and Britons) for simply voting their outrage, protest and frustration.

But now the Scottish path is clear: quit the UK, apply for EU membership, and keep their focus on the continent and not on a dying Europhobic empire.

re: #4 Charles Johnson

However — there is such a thing as self-plagiarism, and it’s still considered highly unethical.

Self plagiarism is a state of being for the modern conservative. It’s who they are and what they do. They craft a myth and then reuse it endlessly, thus we are still debating the Laffer curve and trickle down even though these were largely disproved in the 90’s. Thus we are still talking about Vince Foster, thus we are still talking Benghazi, and before long Whitewater.

Conservatives see, taste, or hear nothing new that appeals, and novel ideas are an anathema. This decade’s conservatives are are by every breath they breathe the very definition of a “second hander” as described by their favorite Ur-libertarian, Ayn Rand.

They must pass things around ad infinitum and nothing’s true to them unless it’s been mindlessly repeated like a well worn mantra a million times by a million fearful voices. They would not and could not accept the idea of self plagiarism, because all paths they walk must be well trod, monitored by the likes of Frank Luntz, and guided by the dead-lights of last century’s leading luddites.

So we now have their candidate, Donald Trump, himself a large personal myth repeated endlessly.

See, selling McCain and Romney as third terms for Dubya was a winner because Dubya left office with poll numbers that had plunged underwater and were headed for the Challenger Deep. By contrast, Obama is set to leave office with numbers in a range that the last two Republican presidents would have envied. Painting Hillary as a third Obama term when the headlines are the stock market at record highs, unemployment down to below 5%, and gas prices below $2 is like heaping red hot coals on your own candidate’s head.

The main reason I buy that anecdote as legit is that Trump seems like the kind of guy who wants all the prestige of being President without having to actually be President. He wants all the adulation but only the patina of responsibility, and none of the accountability. Trying to con Kasich with that ridiculous be-my-scapegoat sales pitch is exactly the kind of stunt he and his family would pull.

And the thing is, had Kasich taken the offer we’d be up shit creek right now, because for reasons that escape me people actually like that asshole.

These people are entitled to their opinions. But the fact that people with these opinions can be elected to high office is disturbing…

But, Disney took an historical story and made a movie our of it. Pence is assuming they made it up whole cloth. In the original story, some versions she marries, in some she does not. His analysis is beyond opinion, it’s moronic because it assumes facts that are easily refutable. Wait, he’s a rethuglican, I probably didn’t need to add that previous sentence.

Massively pissed off about Brexit, just another example of our wishes and votes being dismissed. There should have been a provision requiring the consent of all the countries that make up the UK before triggering brexit. People are calling out Melania and the usual suspects are accused of spinning to cover for her. But I’ve heard a comment that makes much more sense: they’re essentially gaslighting.

This is beyond spinning a take on a situation: there is an outright campaign to deny reality and deliver retribution on people who question them, rightfully taking them to task.

It’s not sustainable as a long-term career anyway. Breitbart probably won’t last forever, and any platform willing to hire him is going to be a lot smaller and pay a lot less, especially for a guy who can’t promote himself on social media. I’m sure wingnut welfare will keep him in meth and Funyuns for a while, but if he keeps pushing himself as the voice of the world’s monsters, eventually he’s going to find himself sitting in a very small room with a bunch of psychotics who don’t like flamboyant, obnoxious gay people at all, and by the time they’re done with him, he’ll have to be buried in a bucket.

The New York Times says it was Melania and her associates, not the speechwriters, that made the fateful changes.

nytimes.com

The speechwriters, Matthew Scully and John McConnell, sent Ms. Trump a draft last month, eager for her approval.

Weeks went by. They heard nothing.

Inside Trump Tower, it turned out, Ms. Trump had decided she was uncomfortable with the text, and began tearing it apart, leaving a small fraction of the original.

Her quiet plan to wrest the speech away and make it her own set in motion the most embarrassing moment of the convention: word-for-word repetition of phrases and borrowed themes from Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic convention eight years ago.

The Times says Melania asked the help of a Trump ghostwriter: “Meredith McIver, a New York City-based former ballet dancer and English major who has worked on some of Mr. Trump’s books, including “Think Like a Billionaire.”“

So, if the Times is correct, Trump’s going to have to fire his own wife.

It seems Melania and maybe this McIver person, and others not named in the Times article, took the professional writers’ work, which had been OK’d by Trump Jr. and the campaign staff, ripped it up, and started from scratch.

Had Melania finished university, she might have learned the ins and outs of plagiarism, citations, etc. Presumably, McIver would know not to lift words verbatim from someone else, but I’ve been surprised before by lazy writers.

The Times points out that the speech scandal is yet another example of how the Trump campaign operates — Trumps run the show and the advisors are just there for decoration.

Free speech is only truly free in a regulated society. This is something the lazy knuckleheads that are ‘free speech by any means’ will never understand.

Free trade is also only possible in a regulated marketplace. One that ensures that the price of a good or service reflects its actual cost. One that ensures that claims made about a product’s qualities are verifiable. One that provides an infrastructure, both physical and legal, to ensure that the market operates for the benefit of all participants.

That is what Adam Smith teaches us, and what most Free Market ideologues ignore.

Manafort countered that the perception of these incidents was “all in the eye of the beholder,” blaming the media for devoting insufficient coverage to the successes of the Trump campaign.

“You’ve been pointing out things that aren’t true, this will be a problem for the Trump campaign, you’ve been wrong,” he said. “Consistently. The American people disagree with your perceptions of all the things you just said.”

“I can’t move on,” Cuomo said. “Because you keep lying about it, so I can’t move on from it.”

“Chris, I’m not lying about anything,” Manafort said.

“What is true: Did the language, did a portion of the language of that speech come from Michelle Obama’s speech, yes or no?”

“As far as we’re concerned, there are similar words that were used,” Manafort said. “We’ve said that. But the feelings of those words, and the commonalty of those words do not create a situation which we feel we have to agree with you. You want to have that opinion, fine.”

“It is not an opinion. That’s the problem,” Cuomo replied.

The Trump campaign is seriously attacking the notion that an objective reality even exists, at least when it isn’t beneficial to their preferred narrative. This is really just an extension of the modern GOP, which regularly refuses to accept objective reality to sell their own fantasy. Hell, this entire convention so far has been painting a picture of a lawless America where jobs are gone, illegals are running amuck, and terrorists are blowing up people on a daily basis. Is it tiny attention spans or is it more to do with constant message reinforcement to keep them in line? I look it as like a form of brain washing, if they don’t keep feeding them the same crap they might actually wander away and see there is a different side to all things.

Completely missing why the GOP convention is a disaster. It’s not because the convention failed Trump, or that Trump himself has flailed about like the novice he is, but because the Party has given itself over to the sociopathic idiocies that Trump spews on a daily basis.

The bigger the lie. The greater the applause.

The more boisterous the claim, the greater the applause.

Facts mean nothing to the GOP, and they haven’t for a long time. If they did, we wouldn’t have had endless Benghazi investigations that repeatedly found that Clinton and Obama didn’t kill anyone in Benghazi, but that doesn’t stop the GOP from trotting out claims that Clinton should be convicted and imprisoned for murder (skipping the whole indictment and trial, because they just know it to be true).

Same thing with the email kerfuffle. They have investigated and found no criminal wrongdoing. The entire classification system is screwed up and the GOP is taking advantage of the situation not to fix it, or the NARA policies, or how to make sure that the State Dept tech is funded appropriately to give staffers proper tech to do their jobs, but to claim illegality where the DOJ and FBI found none.

When FBI director Comey said no reasonable prosecutor would bring charges, the GOP is determined to show it is incredibly unreasonable and hold Clinton to standards that no one else is.

Rinse (or Reince) and repeat. This is the GOP.

The Trump campaign is seriously attacking the notion that an objective reality even exists, at least when it isn’t beneficial to their preferred narrative. The way they equivocate and flat out lie in order to avoid dealing with unambiguous facts crossed over into Orwellian long ago, now it’s just bizarre and unnerving to witness. We’re looking at a collectively shared mental pathology, straight up Cult behavior. Seriously, Scientology has nothing on these assholes.

That was the same strategy that Karl Rove used to make Bush 2 appear presidential. It’s worked very well for the republicans for a long time.

The New York Times says it was Melania and her associates, not the speechwriters, that made the fateful changes.

nytimes.com

The Times says Melania asked the help of a Trump ghostwriter: “Meredith McIver, a New York City-based former ballet dancer and English major who has worked on some of Mr. Trump’s books, including “Think Like a Billionaire.”“

So, if the Times is correct, Trump’s going to have to fire his own wife.

As I thought, the speechwriters gave Melania a speech. She landed it to her friend Meredith, who put it in Word, hit Control-A (highlight), Delete and then turned to Melania and said brightly, “Let’s start over again.”

Imagine the candidates were ice cream flavors. Some people love chocolate. Others love strawberry. But many of the strawberry people hate chocolate, and the chocolate fans are #NeverStrawberry. A few diehard types are all in for rocky road or pistachio. If no consensus could be formed, the bosses would retreat to smoke-filled rooms and figure out what flavor everyone could live with. And the answer was often vanilla. There’s a reason vanilla is the most popular ice cream in America — not because it’s the favorite of the most people, but because no one dislikes vanilla.

Maybe Ailes thought that contract language would allow him to bring down the whole Fox News Network if he ever got booted. By tying his stars to him he gets control over the product if he loses control by no longer managing.

Jonah’s been in the Never Trump camp, ignoring that his own organization and writings have helped create the “modern” GOP that is based on irrationality. Irrational hate, fear, and bigotry. Fear of the other. Fear of equal rights for all persons and groups.

They fear those things because it means that their superior positions are being undermined by the forces of equality. They frame this as socialism or worse, when it’s actually the Constitutional ideal - protecting the rights of minorities and those who have long been disadvantaged because of their race, gender, or sexual orientation (among others).

So, it’s no surprise that this has a lot to do with angry white guys angry over no longer being able to stomp on the rights of others.

Have there been any disruptive protests of note in Cleveland? The only protests I’ve even heard about are the floor fight with the NeverTrumps and the Code Pink protesters who got into the convention hall. Has everyone realized that they shouldn’t do anything to draw the focus away from the official trainwreck of a convention? Are they standing outside saying to each other “I can’t believe this shit”? Are they staying away because they don’t want to get Norovirus? Are any people getting arrested?

Columbus TV Reports from yesteday…looks like some of the Columbus Police are in the video.

Columbus NBC Channel 4 - July 19 th Protests in Cleveland

Cleveland Police report no arrests during Tuesday afternoon protests

CLEVELAND, OH (WCMH) — Across the city of Cleveland, there were several protests as the Republican National Convention continued Tuesday.

At some of them, the situation escalated as groups representing different viewpoints clashed with police and with each other.

In Public Square Tuesday afternoon, Black Lives Matter protesters gathered, as well as religious groups and anti-abortion activists. Bicycle cops used their bikes to push protesters back.

“Protest organizers all along told the city it was a mistake to put both sides in the same park here,” one protester said, speaking to the Cleveland police chief. “They went ahead and did it and this is the result.”

Speaking to reporters after, the chief said, “Our commanders took a look at it and said we needed to kind of slice the pie and get control of it.”

He noted there was no need to use force to control the protesters.

Later in the afternoon, a few vocal protesters faced off with police at East 9th and Lakeside Avenue.

“This is what’s wrong with America,” one protester said, questioning police on why he couldn’t protest on the closed road ahead. “You have to realize that.”

Police declared the scene an “unlawful assembly” and told the crowd of mostly media and a few protesters, “You have five minutes to leave. If you refuse to move, you will be arrested.”

Police say no one was arrested after the afternoon protests.

Dan Aykroyd hilariously destroys the racist Trump-loving ‘gnats’ who hurled abuse at Leslie Jones

Actor Dan Aykroyd has jumped into the fray around recent racist harassment of comedian Leslie Jones — one of the stars of the new reboot of the 1984 film Ghostbusters.

According to The Root, Aykroyd — one of the stars of the original film — compared Jones’ online harassers to supporters of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

“Well first of all she’s a great writer, great comedian and comes from a real urban background where she had a lot of hardship and she’s channelling that into a great achievement and a great career,” the actor said to ET Canada.

The angry racists attacking Jones, Aykroyd said, are “insignificant gnats, they’re losers, they have no lives of their own, they can probably barely pay for the wifi they’re using.”

Openly talking about making up a list of Obama appointees to fire will really excite the Trump base. They want him to be a Punisher in Chief———firing and arresting people. It is as much about revenge against liberals as it is about weeding liberal influence out of agencies and any positions of power.

Frankly, that’s bipartisan. Democrats were excited about an Obama that would name names and kick ass.

Republican candidate votes in last 3 Presidential elections:

2012 W. Mitt Romney 60,589,084
2008 John S. McCain 59,934,814
2004 George W. Bush (I) 62,039,073

So the question is, how many votes will Drumpfskind get?

Even with a growing population, the Republican candidates appear to have been on a bit of a plateau. Is Drumpfskind the one who can break through that wall?

Trump is gambling he can activate millions of disaffected white voters with his direct appeal to their racial anxieties. The problem is he may lose as many votes as he gains as minorities and college educated whites are repulsed by his rhetoric.

There was some of that on the democratic side, but it was focused on a rather short list of people who had been involved with torture and war crimes, not a sprawling list of civil servants with conservative leanings. The Hillary and Obama hate going on now is far more intense and widespread than the disgust many felt for W and Cheney.

What he is selling is to the Trump demographic is a third term of them just getting older and grumpier while blacks and Hispanics keep getting “free stuff.”

That’s a bit too MBF for my taste.

I’d bet you, dollars to donuts as my Mom would have said, that there were no speeches at the convention calling for the imprisonment of George Bush, and no talk of proposed purges coming from the Obama campaign. Sure, some of the rank and file wanted to see investigations and trials for actual war crimes, and a LOT of people wanted to see trials for fraud after the financial collapse, but this is coming FROM THE CANDIDATE.

I know I just said it, but I’ll say it again. Trump does not want the job; he wants to swank about on Air Force 1 and swagger before cheering crowds of plebes. The soirees will be very klassy…..very klassy, believe me.

Other than the actual offer to Kasich, this isn’t a new position for Trump. Back in May, Manafort said:

Also—it sounds like it was a prediction rather than a threat.

Meh, I’d take something like “if you don’t shut up you’ll end up dead in a ditch” as a threat, even if the writer thought he was using a clever loophole.

So after all the assurances that there was no plagiarism, just striking similarities in the speech that Melania wrote herself, the Trumps come up with the excuse that Melania’s speechwriter just got told what to put in the speech and didn’t know it was plagiarism until after the speech was given.

Well, I don’t believe a word she wrote, but she kinda admits it was plagiarism when she says Melania read them to her, telling her that they were Michelle’s words, she wrote them down and she then included them in the speech. That’s sort of the definition of, ya know, plagiarism.

396
Targetpractice  Jul 20, 2016 • 9:54:26am

The Trump campaign set themselves up for this when they played up the idea that Melania wrote the speech herself and how “genuine” it was. Once it came out that portions of the speech were plagiarized, it was either admit she was a plagiarist or admit she was reading a speech prepared for her. But the Trump campaign thought they could take a third option, which was deny objective reality and hope people would buy it.

That’s the difference between a campaign run by amateurs and one run by pros. Pros would never have allowed themselves to be put in such a situation because they would have found a way to spin Melania being a mental lightweight as a plus, not a negative that they needed to cover up.

I didn’t see any but from what I understand, it was just a Republican ragefest against Hillary Clinton, a woman that you know most of their Senators voted to confirm as Secretary of State and whose VP candidate praised for her actions in Libya. I don’t think so. It will die down of course. It would anyway. But it is just one more brick in the wall (so to speak) building the case of the incompetent nature of the Trump campaign.

This man, with supposedly such vast leadership ability sucks at running a campaign. This is generally regarded as a window into a candidate’s leadership ability.

Compare and contrast; Obama 2008. He ran an almost flawless campaign, even though he was derided by the opposition as an “egghead” who never ran so much as a lemonade stand.

New Mexico restaurant owner won’t apologize for controversial ‘Black Olives Matter’ sign

An Italian restaurant in New Mexico is under fire after posting an ill-conceived Black Olives Matters billboard.

Albuquerque eatery Paisano’s wanted a cute way to advertise its tuna and tapenade special. So they decked out the sign out front with a pun that owner Rick Camuglia found amusing: “Black Olives Matter, Try Our Tapenade.”

This reminds me of an incident a few years ago, in which a an online hobby store I frequent used an image of the World Trade Center collapse to illustrate the “Earth shaking” savings to be had during their new sale. This disappeared pretty quickly, replaced by an apology from the owners, along with an assurance that the employee responsible for the ad had been given the boot.

The sheer amount of nonsense on basic campaigning is enough to kill most campaigns. Whether it’s the commingling of funds, seeking foreign campaign donations (done to at least several MPs of UK), etc., or using corporate entity assets for campaigning and vice versa.

All this will come back and bite him bigtime, but his supporters don’t care about any of this - or that it reveals just how poorly run his organization is, or how badly he’d run the nation.

The GOP has been running in this mode of reality-denial for a long time.

Two things here are new. The Trump goons are being more blatant about it than normal, and the media is actually focusing on this point.

RNC 2016 - We have an uplifting and inspirational message that the GOP wants to get out there. If only more people see this, they’ll vote for us over crooked Hillary.

So what does RNC 2016 actually look like? It’s all about wingnut welfare, and pyramid schemes, and defrauding folks out of their life savings, and screwing them out of health care and denying them living wages.

The reality is that the GOP still doesn’t have an actionable bill on heatlh care. All they can agree on is repealing Obamacare, which is what they’ve been stuck on stupid for since 2009. They don’t have a bill to score, and what little we can glean shows they’d cover fewer people, for less stuff, and cost more.

That’s some bargain.

It must be that vaunted GOP math we expect.

Yeah, but even leaving aside the double-negative, how does what he said make any damn sense?

An law abiding American citizen should NOT need no background checks or permit to carry! The 2nd Amendment shall not be infringed period.

Okay, smart boy - how do we determine who is and is not a ‘law abiding American citizen’ and who is not, without a background check?

This is something I got into with a friend who is generally reasonable - or was before November of 2008 - How do you keep guns out of the hands of those we as a society have decided do not have the right to own a gun, either because they’ve committed a sufficiently serious crime, or mental illness, or whatever?

He said, “They’re not allowed to own guns, so if you find them with guns, they can be confiscated” as if that would somehow work. But of course, he didn’t think anybody walking around with a gun, or a gun in his house, should be stopped and asked for ID or anything like that.

It was like he decided to turn off the logical part of his brain when he heard the word ‘gun’.

I really do wonder what it was that Trump offered to Melver or threatened her with to get her to take a dive like this. But that’s what has just happened, she has just signed the death warrant on her career to get Melania Trump out of a jam. There’s no way that future employers will not Google her name, see this episode, and conclude that she can’t do basic things like run lines read to her verbatim through a search engine to ensure that they’re not plagiarized from another source. Between that and being connected to the Trump campaign, she’s radioactive now for at least the next decade.

Sure, but I’m not adding them to my triple-berry pie, either.

I wonder if other languages have such odd categorizations for foods when moving between botanical meanings and culinary meanings.

One of my visitors once brought me a package of Chinese candies. One of the items was candied tomato.

Not bad, actually.

re: #440 Targetpractice

I really do wonder what it was that Trump offered to Melver or threatened her with to get her to take a dive like this. But that’s what has just happened, she has just signed the death warrant on her career to get Melania Trump out of a jam. There’s no way that future employers will not Google her name, see this episode, and conclude that she can’t do basic things like run lines read to her verbatim through a search engine to ensure that they’re not plagiarized from another source. Between that and being connected to the Trump campaign, she’s radioactive now for at least the next decade.

If she’s smart she’ll demand her payoff up front; she knows Trump has a rep for stiffing people, right?

ABC News just reported that a woman named Meredith McIver has sent out the above letter claiming responsibility for Melania Trump’s disastrously plagiarized RNC speech the other evening.

I can’t even begin to count the number of ways in which this makes things look even worse for everyone involved.

This is an example of how the ‘NEVER APOLOGIZE’ standard of response breaks down. As long as no one apologies, you can continue to say you didn’t do anything wrong and thrown the blame on anyone attacking you. The problem is when you get to a situation where there is general agreement that you are the one who messed up. If you don’t admit it you look foolish but as soon as you do you are on the defensive, have to account for everything you said in defense of the situation before you apologized, and you have setup your opponents for the next round when they can start things off with “but last time even YOU admitted you were wrong…”.

Either review what happened and admit mistakes right off the bat (and pay the price) or deny, deny, deny and never back down. Trying to play it half-way never works.
