Notorious Ex-Congressman Sexual Harasser Mark Foley Seated Behind Trump in Florida

Politics • Views: 46,899

Seated in a prominent spot behind Donald Trump at his rally in Florida tonight: ex-Congressman Mark Foley, who was forced to resign in disgrace after it emerged that he had been sexually harassing male teenage Congressional pages.

This comes right after Trump bashed Hillary Clinton for the appearance of the father of Pulse night club shooter Omar Mateen at her rally:

“Wasn’t it terrible when the father of the animal that killed the wonderful people in Orlando was sitting with a big smile on his face right behind Hillary Clinton? And by the way … a lot of the people here — how many of you people know me? A lot of you people know me,” Trump said, addressing the crowd behind him as Foley raised his hand.

When you get those seats you sort of know the campaign, so when she said well we didn’t knew, he knew, they knew.”

So did the Trump campaign know that a notorious sexual harasser of teenage boys was seated right behind him? According to his own words… “he knew, they knew.”

And I’m gonna guess not an accredited or experienced instructor for that kind of training. At a little risk of TMI so sorry in advance?

That kind of hands on real gun training, not aimed at a range but pointing at each other... exists but at a very high level of student and instructor. What everyone else does is to use a fake gun. It’s as simple as buy a bb gun. Or buy a training device that can’t be loaded for real but operates like real for handling. Very frustrating to me that this new active shooter training thing has gone sideways already. There are schools that have been teaching this exact stuff for decades without accidents like that.

Redmond rides again:

Microsoft Secure Boot key debacle causes security panic
Security failures have created “golden keys” which unlock Windows devices protected by Secure Boot.

Microsoft has accidentally leaked the keys to the kingdom, permitting attackers to unlock devices protected by Secure Boot — and it may not be possible to fully resolve the leak. The design flaw in the Windows operating system can be used to unlock Windows devices, including smartphones and tablets, which are otherwise protected by Secure Boot in order to run operating systems other than Windows on locked down systems. This, in turn, allows someone with admin rights or an attacker with physical access to a machine not only to bypass Secure Boot and run any operating system they wish, such as Linux or Android, but also permits the installation and execution of bootkit and rootkits at the deepest level of the device, security researchers MY123 and Slipstream revealed in a blog post on Tuesday
…..
“You can see the irony. Also the irony in that MS themselves provided us several nice “golden keys” (as the FBI would say ;) for us to use for that purpose,” the researchers write.

“About the FBI: are you reading this? If you are, then this is a perfect real world example about why your idea of backdooring cryptosystems with a “secure golden key” is very bad!,” the team added. “Microsoft implemented a “secure golden key” system. And the golden keys got released from MS[’s] own stupidity.”….

Remember when Tim Cook was a traitor for telling the FBI to get bent? Good times….

It looks like a couple of my Facebook friends are still Drumpfskind supporters.

Relatives (or by marriage), it is hard to just let them go.

Thing is, they are not necessarily terrible people by any usual means of evaluating personal interactions.

They’ve just bought into the decades long anti-Clinton propaganda, anti-“Liberal” propaganda a la Faux News, etc.

I don’t know how to dislodge them from their errors. They just don’t respond to arguments.

This is an example of how people make decisions not on intellectual arguments but rather emotional reactions. Programed reactions after years of being trained like Pavlov’s dogs.

Bigotry and hatred takes different names in different cultures:

BJP condemns attacks on Dalit community

[…]

The most recent incident of violence against Dalits was reported on Monday, when two brothers, who were hired to skin a cow that had died of electrocution, were attacked by around 100 ‘gau rakshaks’ or cow vigilantes, who arrived at the spot accusing them of stealing and killing the animal.

The brothers are presently undergoing treatment at a hospital with reports indicating that one of them is critical.

[…]

The BJP is analogous (not exactly, but enough) to our religious right. While they claim to condemn the attacks on the Dalits, I if some of the harder line elements really are that concerned about the Dalits.

More fascist RWNJs here in Virginia. I previously mentioned the problems with the nearby Islamic community center in Spotsylvania County trying to expand. Now, a DOJ investigation against a nearby county for denying a standard zoning request for a planned Islamic center:

The U.S. Justice Department is investigating to determine whether Culpeper County’s Board of Supervisors discriminated against a local Muslim congregation when it turned down a pump-and-haul sewage request for an Islamic prayer house in April.

“They are reviewing our pump-and-haul policy to see if we are in compliance with the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act,” County Administrator John Egertson confirmed Tuesday.

By a 4-3 vote, the supervisors turned down a request by Mohamed Nawabe and the Islamic Center of Culpeper to build a small prayer house on a one-acre parcel off State Route 229 just north of the Ira Hoffman Lane intersection.

Supervisors Jack Frazier, Bill Chase, Gary Deal and Steve Walker voted to deny Nawabe’s pump-and-haul request (the land is not conducive to a conventional septic system). Supervisors Alexa Fritz, Bradley Rosenberger and Sue Hansohn voted against the motion to deny.

The issue originally came before the supervisors at their March meeting, but was quickly tabled for 30 days. That move came on the heels of political activist Kurt Christensen’s email to the supervisors and to the media raising concerns about the permit being on the agenda.

Several supervisors later acknowledged that in the days prior to the April vote they were criticized by residents who were concerned about the prayer house. Fritz, who is chairman of the board, displayed a photo of a hate sign in her district.

The boardroom was filled with angry citizens on the morning of the vote.

Pump-and-haul permits had been a rather routine matter in previous years, with Egertson pointing out that about 15 had been granted since 1995. One was for a parcel of land on which a Lutheran congregation had planned to build a church. That application was later renewed without discussion.

Watching a Steve Kornacki clip on MSNBC (he is covering for Rachel) about the “discomfort on the left” with HRC courting from some Republican leaders.

THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW 8/10/16
Clinton outreach to Republicans causes discomfort on the left
Michael Crowley, senior foreign affairs correspondent at Politico, talks with Steve Kornacki about Hillary Clinton courting support from Republican leaders like Henry Kissinger and Condoleezza Rice and how those overtures are playing with her supporters…

The piece is rife with “some progressives”, the “base of the left”… no names.

I have to give it to Michael Crowley, Politico, who cools Steve’s vapours down with some decent analysis about what is going on. Basically, HRC is not selling her soul to gain Republican support, her main goal is to convey the gap between Trump and some well known Republicans.

Obama Administration Set to Remove Barrier to Marijuana ResearchLink

By CATHERINE SAINT LOUIS and MATT APUZZOAUG. 10, 2016

The Obama administration is planning to remove a major roadblock to marijuana research, officials said Wednesday, potentially spurring broad scientific study of a drug that is being used to treat dozens of diseases in states across the nation despite little rigorous evidence of its effectiveness.

The NYT article points out that there is “little rigorous evidence of its effectiveness”. Why? Marjuana is a schedule 1 drug ‘meaning it is listed alongside heroin and LSD as among the “most dangerous drugs” and has “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.’”
It is currently very difficult, almost impossible, to overcome restrictions and perform medical research on marijuana.

Just watched a Kornaki bit on the parallels between Trump and John Silber, who was the Democratic nominee for governor of Massachusetts in 1990. He lost to Bill Weld, who, as everyone here is probably aware, is now the VP nominee for the Libertarian Party.
People tuned in for his ‘Silber Shockers’ (he had the tendency to make brusque and off-colour statements (a la Trump) but came off as overly defensive in an interview held at his home - an interview which was supposed to help humanise him and which reminded me of the Simpson’s episode in which Mr. Burns blows his chance at the governorship by refusing to eat a three-eyed fish mutated by radioactive runoff from his powerplant.
The point of the piece was that temperament matters and voters engaged during the campaign season may shy away at the last hurdle.
Anyways, pretty good for the Maddow understudy.

Yeah, totally ineffective, that’s why doctors prescribe synthetic THC (Dronabinol) to cancer victims to lessen the side effects of chemotherapy.

Yes.
We should also not forget that the Tesla accidents are being studied and improvements will be made.
Each year about 30,000 people die in people driven cars. Safety-wise, the expectation is that effective implementation of autonomous driving will cut that number down.

Whelp, seizure-wise, as a result of epilepsy alone, it looks like about 100,000 people would be a denied driver license.

Car accidents: Many states do not issue driver’s licenses to people with a history of seizures until they have been seizure-free for a specified period of time. A seizure can cause loss of awareness and affect your ability to control a car. You could injure yourself or others if you have a seizure while driving. - See more at: healthline.com

Even if it’s only 1% of the total, that’s still almost one a day, somewhere.

Automatic systems are going to be held to a totally different standard, though. If you could wave a magic wand and replace every vehicle on the road with an autonomous vehicle on January 1 of some year, if the year before 30,000 people were killed in cars under human control vs. 30 this year, it would be the crime of the millennium. Everybody involved would be tarred and feathered.

Yes, one of the biggest hindrances to the introduction of driverless systems will be the question of liability and responsibility for accidents. Questions will arise whether it was a maintenance failure, a design flaw or whether extraneous circumstances might apply.

Totally agree with that concern. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail. One thing that helped me feel better about autonomous vehicles was the chance to drive a car with ACTIVE CRUISE CONTROL. After seeing how seamless and capable it was I could envision fully autonomous some day.

Okay, I just started watching Morning Joe during the conventions and I must say, get rid of Joe and keep Donny Deutsch. He just made a cogent point. Trump is making outrageous statements now, at a time when he still has somewhat a chance. Imagine what he will say when he has no chance.

Trump hints he may get even crazier: ‘I think maybe they want tougher rhetoric’

“I am listening to so-called experts to ease up the rhetoric, and so far, I’m liking the way I ran in the primaries better,” said the Republican presidential nominee. “Personally, I don’t know if that’s what the country wants. When we’re having heads chopped off in the Middle East, when things are happening that have never happened before in terms of the atrocities, in terms of giving $400 million in cash and all other things, I think maybe they want tougher rhetoric.”

You don’t even need to read between the lines to see that Trump is just itching to turn things up a notch because he thinks the general electorate is really pumped up to see him mock disabled reporters, insinuate opponents’ parents might have helped kill President Kennedy, and insult female debate moderators for having blood coming out of their “wherever.”

re: #99 The Vicious Babushka

One of the most destructive things ever sold to the American people is this idea that government is supposed to turn a profit like a business. And therefore we need businessmen to run the government. NO. NOPE. NOoooooo.

Government exists first and foremost to INVEST in its citizens health and well being. This runs from everything to clean air and water, safe roads and bridges, a functional public school system, police, fire and rescue services, trash and waste removal and processing, and on and on. Privatizing all that stuff rarely ends up being a bargain for anyone. And once some shit is ruined (like air, water, soil and food supply) it can take decades or even longer to make it right again. People bitch about wasted tax dollars, but they fail to connect with the concept that there really has to be a separation of business and government. Maybe not to the degree of church and state, but there has to be a line there or we end up with contractors who do shitty work, get paid and people die or are hurting for life because of it. When government is able to do its job, you end up with healthy, well educated people who then can pay back what was invested in them by becoming productive, tax paying citizens who understand what being part of a United States entails. We are seeing that fall apart before our very eyes now, and it’s in large part because of the idea that the government exists to make money. Oh, it does make money, but not for us, for a very select few.

Trump said something that actually made sense - namely that now was a good time to invest in infrastructure because interest rates were low.

But the GOP will sail right past that because they think debt is the absolute worst thing, unless it’s debt due to spending on wars and tax cuts for the rich (concurrently is a double win for the GOP).

The GOP’s fiscal policy is geared entirely towards favoring tax cuts for the wealthy and burden shifting from the rich to everyone else. It’s indisputable at this time. We see it everywhere - from the GOP’s own platform, to demanding estate tax repeals or cuts, in exchange for tax increases elsewhere (that would affect everyone, but disproportionately those who can ill afford it), or income tax cuts for the wealthy that result in far more tax savings for the rich (percentage and real dollars) than everyone else.

Morning…I think…all this humidity has me crashing early, waking early and crashing again ‘cuz I awoke too early.

I know a bunch of Bernie fans that say Hillary courting any Republican is a sure sign that she is a Republican in Dem clothes.

Beats me, I thought the idea was to get the office and bring change by appointing new Supremes and maybe working to get back control of the two branches of Congress. Pretty much. If we can draw in even some of the GOP without giving away the farm - which is the case so far - then perhaps we’ve started to repair the damage done by Reagan.

People forget that historically the Democrats are Center-Right and only go further left when necessary (ie FDR) to prevent revolution. Now to real lefties like me that can get really frustrating but the reality is that it fits America really quite well.

The only real good that 3rd parties do in America is to provide ideas for the two major parties to steal and keep the majority happy.

Well it seems that they were in fact using that tongue in cheek the day that Trump released a photo of himself eating a taco bowl and mocking it. Yeah, totally ineffective, that’s why doctors prescribe synthetic THC (Dronabinol) to cancer victims to lessen the side effects of chemotherapy.

////////////

(They have to prescribe the synthetic THC because they, of course, can’t legally prescribe marijuana in most states. And the synthetic THC is absurdly more expensive of course.)

America’s whole thinking on drugs is a complete mess. Alcohol is most likely one of the most corrosive chemicals going. Look at the toll it takes on so many Americans. But it is legal.

I have no problem with alcohol being legal as it like so much is a choice. All I am talking about is realistic policy with research and education of all drugs so everyone knows what is dangerous what is beneficial.

I still remember one of my earliest lessons was the son of my one sister-in-law from a previous marriage to a policeman. One night, just after he got his license (16) he got drunk with a bunch of his buddies and drove off the side of the road and took out a telephone pole.

My sister-in-law was so glad it was only alcohol and that he wasn’t smoking pot. And his cop father managed to get the kid out of the whole thing. Lesson…there was none. He could have killed himself or someone else.

He ended up getting screwed up with alcohol but luckily managed to get himself straightened around. One of the things that helped chill him out…he smoked pot instead. He was living in my parents house after they had passed and it was being prepared for sale after the estate was cleared up. I had keys and one day dropped by to pick some of my old stuff and I saw rolling papers and a bong.

I never told him or his mother…she would have never understood and he was already changing and become a responsible dude…that smoked a little pot.

Anything can be bad if not moderated…salt, sugar, red meat…on and on.

It is good to see Obama may make this change. I have a good friend that smokes to relieve his back spasms and associated pain. He finds it was more effective than the stupid Cymbaltra his one doc had him on. That crap altered his personality and made him depressed and maudlin.

I’ve also heard LSD needs to be taken off the same schedule list. There are many thinking it may be a big help for Alzheimer’s and may help open new pathways in the brain to the storage of memories and functions. No one is going to know if it isn’t researched.

I agree but it’s more like hundreds of groups that reinforce lies and just stupid information. Hell, there’s at least 20 groups just devoted to flat earth stuff. My favorite one says they have membership ALL OVER THE GLOBE. Hahahaha. This shit pops up in my sidebar because I follow science bullshit debunking pages and it’s a hoot sometimes, but it scares me to see that some of the pages/groups have a few thousand members.

You’re right. I under-counted the groups. These groups are really I think what pushes the reenforcement of confirmation bias. What seems to me happens is one person finds a meme on their pages and they share it and it’s often about how outrageously awful something is. It’s something as i said usually distorted or an outright lie like some of the stuff I’ve had to debunk by my friend I’ve mentioned but no one bothers to actually check it.

re: #140 A Mom Anon

Lordy it’s just dumb. To be clear though, the DNC emails aren’t what she was talking about with the murder. The emails just prove how awful Hillary is and how she forced Wasserman Shultz to resign and blah. The murder of the DNC staffer is suspect because he wasn’t robbed and it was in DC and he was in charge of stuff to do with voting and it’s obvious Hillary had something to do with this because she’s responsible for so many deaths as SoS. She won’t shut the fuck up and keeps dropping links from CNN and something called lawfareblog and none of them conclusively say the shit she says they do. It’s like trying to explain something to a small child with her.

responding to you and HappyWarrior’s #142 above, i’ve long since given up trying to explain or convince anyone else of anything. having a civilized discussion is difficult enough because first i have to know im dealing with someone who sort of accepts reality and rationality and logic and evidence and that there can be more than one way to look at things, etc. anymore than i can “debate” flat-earth, the age of the cosmos, homeopathy, astrology, bigfoot, etc.

so politically, i never engage, including family. none of us bring it up and we all get along great (and i dont do facebook, twitter or anywhere else but here)

i know that a powerful tool for political change is to engage others and try and persuade.

ive decided that its easier and way less stressful to help register new voters. its not controversial (mostly) and more powerful and effective.

plus it doesnt annoy the pig

Okay, I just started watching Morning Joe during the conventions and I must say, get rid of Joe and keep Donny Deutsch. He just made a cogent point. Trump is making outrageous statements now, at a time when he still has somewhat a chance. Imagine what he will say when he has no chance.

Mika just replied, somewhat under her breath, “Go back to pageants”.

I caught some of the first part of the show. I heard Mika make a dig at the missing Joke Scarborough about “what do I know, I’m just a little ol’ democrat. (In reference to Joke’s completely out of line shushing her up yesterday and saying “let me say it to the Republicans, because I am a Republican.”)

I had a guy tell me on Tuesday that he really considered himself a John Birch fellow and that he was going to vote Trump because he was the least bad of the three candidates he was aware of < face palm >. (Stein doesn’t even register for him. Not a bad thing really… )

But then he went on a long rant about the national debt and how it was destroying the nation. In the end that was the only issue that really mattered to him and he wasn’t going to hear anything other than what he believed.

Sigh. I really wish Econ 101 (macro & micro) was taught in High School along with better Civics classes.

William…did I see you mention X upthread? I got to see them live at Bogarts in Cincinnati. It was a great show. Last night I watched some of the Women’s Beach Volleyball competition. The US team was wearing long sleeve jerseys, and the Swiss team was wearing leggings. So it would seem that maximum exposure of skin is not a requirement for performance in that sport.

I noted that last night too. Teams were wearing various outfits, from long sleeves and leggings to bikinis. Doesn’t affect anything other than giving some of the male (or female) views a rise.

Oh, I dearly love X. I’ve seen them 3 times and John Doe solo. John and Exene are an interesting couple - they give me a model of how to handle my ex wanting a divorce when I didn’t but still wanted to maintain a certain level of positive relationship. They still tour and their singing is exquisite…

Once upon a lifetime ago I took three cassette tapes with me when I went to basic training - one was a mix tape, one was Dire Straits “Love over Gold” and the last was “Under the Big Black Sun”. They are a really major part of my musical life. It’s hard to describe beyond that but X in my rotating top 5 bands along with Husker Du, The Clash, The Who & The Replacements the order depending on the mood of the day.

eta: Just realized that other than bar bands, X is the band I’ve paid money to see more than any other. I’m glad of that :D

Greetings all. Mr. C. and I are back from our little jaunt up the coast. Mostly lovely weather and good hiking.
Did I miss anything while we were away? Oh, never mind.
(I did hear about Stupid Trump Remark #8,873,020, but very little else. It was so mentally refreshing to mostly stay away from media.)

Lots to do this morning from laundry to grocery shopping so I’ll catch up with everyone later.

New release from SC State Chair:

A new Public Policy Polling (PPP) poll, released today shows that the presidential race in South Carolina is statistically tied, and within the margin of error with Donald Trump at 41% and Hillary Clinton at 39%.

Turning South Carolina Blue doesn’t stop with the presidency though, and we’re proud to share that respondents also sided with Democrats on several key issues:

- 84% support requiring universal criminal background checks for firearm purchases
- 81% support barring firearm purchases by people on the terrorist watch list
- 77% support increasing the minimum wage
- 78% support allowing refinancing student loans at lower rates
- 53% support legislation protecting LGBT South Carolinians from discrimination in the workplace, housing, and public accommodations

So many people would vote Democratic if the Republicans couldn’t get away with scaring them about gays, guns, and abortion. Perhaps that’s why Republican leaders really are disgusted with Trump. He’s not good at pretending that he sees persecuting gays and women getting abortions as the issue but rather being a bombastic asshole.

Indeed. I’ve never been a Republican and neither were my parents or grandparents but you know when my parents were growing up, the GOP was a respectable party at least that I think had its priorities straight. Can’t imagining them nominating Trump or someone like Trump even getting considered. To me, the GOP’s descent into the shit storm it is today begins with nominating Goldwater in 1964. I don’t care if Goldwater wasn’t a racist personally and has some admirable qualities. It was a mistake to nominate a man opposed to the CRA-1964 and other federal civil rights legislation.

That SC gunplay story is an early indicator. When the post-mortem of Trump’s campaign is written, we’ll have a brand new definition of both ‘stunning incompetence’ and ‘amateur night.’

To Donald Trump: I am the daughter of a man who was shot by someone who got his inspiration from a movie, someone who believed if he killed the President the actress from that movie would notice him. Your glib and horrifying comment about “Second Amendment people” was heard around the world. It was heard by sane and decent people who shudder at your fondness for verbal violence. It was heard by your supporters, many of whom gleefully and angrily yell, “Lock her up!” at your rallies. It was heard by the person sitting alone in a room, locked in his own dark fantasies, who sees unbridled violence as a way to make his mark in the world, and is just looking for ideas. Yes, Mr. Trump, words matter. But then you know that, which makes this all even more horrifying.

I’ll be honest. I’ve read enough behind-the-scenes books and watched enough behind-the-scenes stories about campaigns to know that the only presidential campaigns that AREN’T absolute shitshows are the ones who never had a chance anyway (your Kucinich’s and Gilmores).

Don’t get me wrong, I think that the Trump campaign is going to provide for some spellbinding behind-the-scenes action, but a presidential campaign is effectively an extremely decentralized circus. You have a candidate who is exhausted and frustrated. You have bickering staff who grow to hate each other because of the pressure they are all under. You have surrogates that go off message, you have local offices that go rogue, you have supporters who do shitty things that somehow your campaign is responsible for. And on top of that shit sundae, you have the press fixating on who-the-fuck-knows-what any given day, and in the modern era, you have the Internet constantly digging up dirt from twenty years ago, and if they can’t find any, they just make it up, and suddenly your surrogates have to defend how your candidate isn’t a pigfucker.

The only campaign that looks competent is the one that wins, and that’s because the stories behind its dysfunction usually get buried.

My favorite bit from the article:

At Clinton headquarters in Brooklyn, aides still nursing scars from skirmishes with Bernie Sanders marveled at their good fortune. As in all campaigns, researchers watch every public event, read every interview, archive every tweet. “On other campaigns, we would have to scrounge for crumbs,” says a senior Clinton adviser. “Here, it’s a fire hose. He can set himself on fire at breakfast, kill a nun at lunch and waterboard a puppy in the afternoon. And that doesn’t even get us to prime time.”

Doubtful—she’s totally in her element in Florida doing Hispanic outreach. (her twitter handle is SilvinaLaLatina)

But I’m incredibly pumped. If that wayward 2% for Stein (I’m sure Bernie holdouts) came to their senses, Hillary would be actually tied. And most interesting is that the demo where Trump has a big lead is in over 65—and I can tell you, there are a whole lot of old Dems here—just need to get them registered and voting (along with the yoots)

I just hope the enthusiasm continues and has some impact on downticket. Thomas Dixon is a really good candidate—Tim Scott is a do-nothing jerk. If we could get some big name surrogates to work for Dixon and if Scott could be shamed into a debate, I think Dixon might actually have a chance. Ross Perot was actually a successful businessman.

And much of it due to huge government contracts with EDS (Electronic Data Systems).

It always amazes me how many small government types made huge amounts of money through government contracts, connections or as politicians.

Because poor people are forced to spend all their money. Rich people spend a fraction of theirs.

They’d have rebates for the poor people. When you point out that this just moves the tax burden off of rich people and corporations to the middle class, they just stick their fingers in their ears and go ‘nyah nyah nyah’.

. And most interesting is that the demo where Trump has a big lead is in over 65—and I can tell you, there are a whole lot of old Dems here—just need to get them registered and voting (along with the yoots)

And 30 seconds after I typed this, email from Clinton campaign:

I have a simple but important question for you: Are you registered to vote yet?

We can raise a whole lot of money, we can build the strongest ground game in history, and we can have a supremely qualified and progressive ticket like Hillary and Tim fighting for us. But NONE of that will matter if we don’t turn out our supporters to vote — and that starts with you being registered.

Registering or finding out your registration status takes just a minute. Make sure you’re signed up, fired up, and ready to elect Hillary!

Her peeps are ON IT!

We need a decision on Hannity’s new nickname: SMIM, “Stupidest Man in Media” or SMIT, “Stupidest Man in Television”? The latter reflects his usual venue, but it may be too much like a real name. SMOT, “Stupidest Man ON Television” might be best of all, but we don’t want to take anything away from his online counterpart, the renowned SMOTI.
