Even with the deck stacked in his favor, how could he really undo two bad debates at this point? She’s not going to blow up, he’s more likely to do so than she, and most people have stopped giving a shit about her emails and Benghazi (the two topics most likely to hurt her). Bannon’s probably whispering in his ear that what lost it for him Sunday was the mods actually moderating the debate instead of just giving him a soapbox for 90 minutes.

(AP) -
Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is giving Hillary Clinton credit for her work on behalf of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Giuliani was asked at a Republican Party briefing Thursday in Philadelphia whether he took issue with the Democratic convention speakers who’d been praising Clinton. Giuliani said she was “enormously supportive and helpful.” Clinton was a U.S. senator from New York at the time.
He says Clinton “has a right to tell people that she worked hard on behalf of the 9/11 families.” He adds that, “She did.”

From The Hill: Trump hints that Ryan is part of ‘sinister deal’
Trump at a Florida rally on Wednesday questioned why Ryan, who effectively conceded Trump’s White House chances during a call with lawmakers this week, wouldn’t come out and congratulate him after Sunday’s presidential debate.
“Wouldn’t you think Paul Ryan would call and say, ‘good going’?” Trump asked in Ocala.
“You’d think they’d say, ‘Great going, Don. Let’s go, let’s beat this crook. Let’s beat her. We’ve got to stop her.’ No, he doesn’t do that. There’s a whole deal going on. We’re going to figure it out. I always figure things out. There’s a whole sinister deal.”

It’s their only hope now for a horserace, that Trump can somehow “come from behind” by relying upon poor voter turnout. Meanwhile, the pace of new voter registrations, absentee ballot requests, and early voter turnout would seem to indicate that the exact opposite is true. That the GOP is becoming so disheartened that they’re probably going to stay home.

Well there have been all sorts of studies about the effects of negative campaigning on voter turnout. Depending on which studies you rely on it either depresses turnout, increases turnout, has no real effect on turnout, or maybe it is the timing of the negativity that is important, late in a campaign it tends to suppress turnout and early in a campaign it can actually motivate turnout. So you know, pick your poison.

George Orwell nailed this in 1984:
In its second minute the Hate rose to a frenzy. People were leaping up and down in their places and shouting at the tops of their voices in an effort to drown the maddening bleating voice that came from the screen. The little sandy-haired woman had turned bright pink, and her mouth was opening and shutting like that of a landed fish. Even O’Brien’s heavy face was flushed. He was sitting very straight in his chair, his powerful chest swelling and quivering as though he were standing up to the assault of a wave. The dark-haired girl behind Winston had begun crying out ‘Swine! Swine! Swine!’ and suddenly she picked up a heavy Newspeak dictionary and flung it at the screen. It struck Goldstein’s nose and bounced off; the voice continued inexorably. In a lucid moment Winston found that he was shouting with the others and kicking his heel violently against the rung of his chair. The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but, on the contrary, that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds any pretence was always unnecessary. A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge-hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current, turning one even against one’s will into a grimacing, screaming lunatic. And yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blowlamp. Thus, at one moment Winston’s hatred was not turned against Goldstein at all, but, on the contrary, against Big Brother, the Party, and the Thought Police; and at such moments his heart went out to the lonely, derided heretic on the screen, sole guardian of truth and sanity in a world of lies. And yet the very next instant he was at one with the people about him, and all that was said of Goldstein seemed to him to be true. At those moments his secret loathing of Big Brother changed into adoration, and Big Brother seemed to tower up, an invincible, fearless protector, standing like a rock against the hordes of Asia, and Goldstein, in spite of his isolation, his helplessness, and the doubt that hung about his very existence, seemed like some sinister enchanter, capable by the mere power of his voice of wrecking the structure of civilization.

Very well put.
RWNJs who know a little history will point to the regrettably named Operation Wetback of the 50s as an example of what can be done.
Overall, there were 1,078,168 apprehensions made in the first year of Operation Wetback, with 170,000 being rounded up from May to July 1954. In addition, many illegal immigrants fled to Mexico fearing arrest; over half a million from Texas alone. The total number of apprehensions would fall to just 242,608 in 1955, and would continuously decline by year until 1962, when there was a slight rise in apprehended workers. Despite the decline in apprehensions, the total number of Border Patrol agents more than doubled to 1,692 by 1962, and an additional plane was also added to the force.
In fact the operation was a failure:
During the entirety of the Operation, border recruitment of illegal workers by American growers continued due largely to the low cost of illegal labor, and the desire of growers to avoid the bureaucratic obstacles of the Bracero program. The continuation of illegal immigration despite the efforts of Operation Wetback was largely responsible for the failure of the program.
(“Bracero” was a guest worker program implemented during World War II and continued into the early 60s)
It was also a very different time and situation. There was a severe labor shortage in Mexico and the Mexican government cooperated fully with the operation, taking control of deportees at the border then moving them to central Mexico.
Most Hispanic US citizens and legal immigrants were also supportive, at least until word came of citizens being scooped up and indiscriminately deported, and sometimes brutal treatment from authorities on both sides of the border. In July of 1955, 88 deportees died in Mexican holding camps during a 112 degree heat wave. Many others found themselves stranded and without resources in unfamiliar parts of Mexico. The number of citizens deported illegally is not known, but there were 11000 illegal deportation complaints from legal immigrants in 1954-64.

The forced removal of millions of people is called “Population Transfer.” Greece and Turkey did it in 1921 with their “transfer” of over 2 million Greek and Turkish minorities in their countries. India and Pakistan “transfered” several millions on their 1948 partition. Over a million Arabs and Jews were also “transfered” during the 1948 Israeli-Arab War. What the Republican party is proposing with the forced removal of 11 million undocumented immigrants from the United States, would be the biggest “polulation transfer” in the history of mankind.
re: #260 Shiplord Kirel
That bit of history is a good argument that the only real approach to dealing with illegal immigration is employer sanctions. Any proposed approach that doesn’t have that as its primary basis is a joke.

I don’t really worry about that. If the scum of the earth want to get themselves killed off by law enforcement with their Civil War II fantasies, let them.
That’s pretty much what it would take to get a real conversation started about muzzling Fox News and hate radio. We can’t put up with their incitement of stochastic terrorism forever.
I occasionally ask the wingnuts, “When you start your civil war are you willing to accept the casualty ratio guerrilla wars generate? That is a minimum of ten guerrilla fighters for every government soldier or law enforcer. It can go as high as fifty to one.
“Are there enough wingnuts in the country to sustain such a ratio for more than a week?”

The GOP has had a long(!) history of top down control of the grassroots. This is how they kept foisting marginally acceptable corporate tax hawk bluebloods on the party faithful, when 90 percent of the base has no fucking interest at all in letting the top 1 percent pay next to nothing on their marginal rates.
The Tea Party version 1.0 was an actual threat to that model, since it was a genuine grassroots revolt against Goldman Sachs as much as anything else. That is why it was firmly and irrevocably stamped down flat and taken over by Dick Armey Freedomworks as another messaging control over the very people who tried to do something outside of the box.
This sort of thing may have gone on even longer, except for 3 things: 1) Outside GOP groups (Club for Growth, the Heritage Foundation)and talk radio etc that pushed for increasing doctrinal purity and threatened to primary challenge politicians who strayed or compromised, 2) Citizen’s United, which allowed for unlimited cash to the loudest and most extreme voices from every source imaginable, and 3) the destruction of pork barrel spending, which destroyed party control over junior members as well as any actual incentives to compromise.
Now we see what they have reaped as a harvest.

I think there is a real chance of violence in the week after the election where someone gets hurt or killed and property is burned or damaged by angry Trump types, and an outside chance that a 3% group or “Patriot” militia tries something exceptionally stupid.

The new Wikileaks dump from Clinton campaign chief John Podesta’s emails reveals that Podesta created a couple of activist groups for the sake of undermining the Catholic bishops and the Church’s authority. In the 2011 e-mail chain, a progressive activist named Sanford “Sandy” Newman e-mailed Podesta to suggest collaboration on a way
There needs to be a Catholic Spring, in which Catholics themselves demand the end of a middle ages dictatorship and the beginning of a little democracy and respect for gender equality in the Catholic Church.

Right now, I picture the Trump campaign like the final battle in The Hunt for Red October, when Tupolev’s Alfa fired her final torpedo (with all safeties off), the Red October gets the torpedo to home in on the Alfa and destroy her. Right before the Alfa is destroyed, Tupolev’s chief exclaims, “You ass…you’ve killed us!”
I somehow imagine a similar response from Trump’s campaign staff to The Donald.
