The United States of America has veered into dictatorship. Who will stand for law above diktat?

Welp. All that fired up, engaged rush of enthusiasm from last night is gone now. WH is moving fast, unilaterally, and with literally no check or balance that can stop it now, it seems.

Even if we do end up stopping it somehow, the damage will be untold, and the ideal of who is allowed to ever be considered ‘American’ is utterly shattered, because it’s clear that most of us are simply not wanted here, because we are never, ever, ever going to be seen or allowed to be ‘American’.

It’s a true test of character for so many. Yates showed her character. It’s up to our Congressmen and women and others to do the same. Seeing good things out of the State Department. Many feel they cannot ethically do what Trump is asking of them.

I’ve lived through many, many French strikes. If people are angry enough, they stand up, fight back.

re: #6 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Fuck that shit. I’m not letting the assholes define who or what is American.

If George Takei can still be positive and fight for what’s right, so can I.

You know, I remember back just about a year ago when the bozo Bundy clan was occupying the sanctuary in Oregon. Many people were bitching about the lack of response from the Feds and how that all would lead to other militia type groups flying in the face of Obama and the Feds.

Some people lost all faith in Obama and the Feds. They called him and them weak and powerless, and much worse.

They said if there wasn’t a strong response all national lands and institutions would be over run by the crazies. It almost seemed at time they really wanted it to happen.

And then one day the Feds pulled their well thought out plans and the occupation was over with only one dead who wanted to go out a martyr and the Bundy’s and the other main culprits all in jail.

Yeah, I know we are facing real problems here in America. But we are still a population of 318+ million people. We do have power.

And eventually the people will say it is time to put a stop to this. I believe in this county’s institutions and our laws. I believe there are enough good people that will be willing to do what is right to end the reign of the Orange Oaf and the likes of a Nazi like Bannon.

It is going to take time, but I am encouraged by the demonstration that are going on. Here in Columbus there have been three days of demonstration. Add that all to Trump’s weakening support from even the people that voted for him and there will be change.

And I too am going to do all I can to help. I spent about a half hour this afternoon writing to Rob Portman (again) and to Mitch McConnell (again) and I am trying to find a way to contact Paul Ryan too. I am also getting emails from the Democratic party asking for assistance for candidates running in the next few years. I am going to do my best to see if I can assist on campaign materials.

And I am hoping that one day, just like on January 26th last year, Trump will be traveling down the road he is on thinking everything is going smoothly and he too will be stopped.

It sure is a lot better on the ol’ personal constitution to think this will all end eventually than to get despondent and think all is hopeless. Fuck. That. Shit.

Fight. Resist. Do all you can in your power. But never toss in the towel in frustration.

That will lead to the bad things some seem to be worried about.

This admin has already decided they’re above the law.

This is the ice pick aimed right into the heart of our democracy. The law only functions if we consent for it to function.

If men with guns no longer consent, we rediscover the joys of living in Hobbes’ state of nature:

During the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that conditions called war; and such a war, as if of every man, against every man.
**

The condition of man… is a condition of war of everyone against everyone.
**

No arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear and danger of violent death; and the life of man solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.
**

Covenants, without the sword, are but words and of no strength to secure a man at all.

That last quote especially shows the hazard we see when courts cannot enforce law. What do you do when the sword holders go rogue?

Meanwhile, it looks like Le Pen’s main opponent is facing a fresh crisis over claims that he engaged in nepotism.

Francois Fillon’s French presidential campaign plunged deeper into trouble on Tuesday after further revelations about his use of public funds to employ members of his family.

The Republican candidate’s daughter and son allegedly earned 84,000 euros ($91,000) from 2005 to 2007 while working for him when he was a Senator, Le Canard Enchaine said. His wife, Penelope Fillon, earned more than 900,000 euros during over a decade as a parliamentary assistant and a contributor to a magazine while doing little actual work, according to Le Canard.

The newspaper’s initial report on Penelope’s job last week triggered a prosecutor to open a preliminary probe into the family’s affairs. It’s not illegal to hire relatives for public posts in France, so long as they perform their duties. The candidate says he’s innocent.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is using a procedural move to delay the confirmation of Donald Trump’s pick for Attorney General. The committee was expected to vote on Tuesday to advance the nomination of Jeff Sessions to the full Senate, but that vote will now happen on Wednesday.

In order to stall the vote, the Democrats invoked an obscure rule known as the “two-hour rule.” The rule allows either party to end committee meetings that run more than the first two hours of the Senate’s official day.

“These are not US military vehicles,” Major Jamie Davis, a spokesman from the Department of Defense, told the Herald-Ledger. “They are Humvees, but there’s no unit designator on there. In the Army, if we go out we have our vehicles identified.”

Davis said the vehicles are most likely decommissioned military Humvees that were sold off to civilians. In addition to lacking a special unit designator, military Humvees also would not be allowed to fly a flag other than the United States flag or a unit insignia. A rep from the Kentucky National Guard told the paper Monday that the vehicles weren’t theirs either.

They also have no license plates. If privately owned they should have been pulled over, cited, and towed. Bet they can’t even provide proof of insurance.

Being an immigrant myself, I’ve never felt as unwelcome in this country as I’ve been feeling after the election. I’ve always been treated differently, even by well-meaning folks who were simply curious, and though I certainly feel American to the bone, it’s clear that many others simply don’t regard me as one.

Important to keep in mind it is not all Feds.

We need to count on the good. Good always overcomes bad. Yes, it could get messy and take time, but I am not going to abandon the thought that the majority of the people working in the government are good people, and the majority of the people that are police and military are good people…

And they all know the pressure our Constitution in under.

People seem to want this to be over today…tomorrow. It takes time…all shocks to systems have to settle down, recalibrate and then fight.

Take the body’s immune system. It has to identify, isolate and then attack the foreign substance. In the meantime it builds up a fever, makes the person lay down and then rebuilds. Meanwhile you put in nutrients and fluids that are helpful.

I see the Demonstration as the fluids.

I like to feel positive. Feeling depressed and unwilling to fight, to give up, lets the sickness take over.

they could have temporaries displayed in front windshields. Also, the armor kit on the back of the vehicles is what is typically seen on those humvees used by the Iraqi Army, not the US

Not in Kentucky. The temporary tags (and even transit tags for vehicles being moved out of the Commonwealth to another state) have to be in the same place as a regular plate.

Something rather amazing jumped out at me in that article:

and tasks the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with producing a report twice a year on the total number of foreign-born people - not just nonimmigrant visa holders - who are authorized to work in the United States.

That sounds like they want to monitor naturalized citizens.

Honestly, I have no idea where I’d go if I were an ex-pat. I don’t speak any foreign languages. Canada is a nice place but probably too cold for me. We just have to keep on pushing. Our ancestors survived fascism. We can too.

It is often warmer where I am than it is in OH, PA, IA, MN, SD, ND, MT, ID, ME, VT, NY, NH. Just sayin’.

The company taking the monetary hit rather than the employees is symbolic? Do you think that the only way this has meaning is if American people suffer?

Suffering is how our fathers bought what we are throwing away. When it’s gone, even suffering might not bring it back.

Amateur hour continues:

Inside the Loews Hotel in downtown Philadelphia at various points Thursday were President Trump, Vice President Pence, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) and scores of other Republican members of Congress. Reporters were kept out, and only a few select staffers, family members and outsiders were allowed to participate in the private GOP policy retreat.

But at least one unauthorized person made it inside, and while it is unclear to what degree the country’s top leaders were in physical danger, their circle of trust was undoubtedly breached.

A person secretly recorded closed sessions on national security and health care that were attended by many dozens of GOP lawmakers. They had gathered for a private discussion of some of the thorniest legislative issues of the moment, as well as a question-and-answer session with Pence.

The recordings were anonymously emailed that night to reporters for The Washington Post and other news outlets that published stories exposing qualms inside the GOP over the party’s plans to roll back the Democratic health-care overhaul and a looming debate between defense hawks and advocates of fiscal rectitude. Pence, meanwhile, made news by committing to pursue an investigation into unfounded accusations of widespread voter fraud.

E-mail of known info sent to my local Mensa group which is now a hotbed of political activism

[I just took that information, along with other information reported in the past few days, and sent it along to others in my state Mensa group. (The state group’s political mail list has become quite a hotbed of political activity these past couple days.)

I put what I wrote behind a hide bar, because it is somewhat long. It is, I hope, a worthwhile read.

(link to Ms. Silver’s twitter feed deleted here but not in original E-mail)

Charlotte Silver is a reporter. She has written for the left-leaning magazine The Nation and for Vice News.

She is reporting that the US Marshals Service is now refusing to enforce court orders suspending the Muslim Ban Executive Order, referring lawyers serving writs that they take orders from the US Attorney. I stress her report is not confirmed by others.

The Marshals Service is a division of the Department of Justice. The US Attorney is under the control of the Executive Branch. That means there is no longer an enforcement arm for the Justice Department if Ms. Silver’s report is true this morning.

The only time to stop an authoritarian regime with relative ease is in its first few days. Once it becomes entrenched, it usually takes warfare to oust the regime. The Republican Party, in control of both branches of the Legislature, is standing by and doing nothing but fast-tracking Cabinet picks without proper paperwork.

In the nascent beginning of an authoritarian regime, the coup does not need the structures of government. They need the folks with guns. If it is true that the Marshals Service, like Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection before, are now refusing to honour the courts, we in fact have a fascist coup in progress.

Republican politicians are refusing to meet with constituents. There is a massive protest outside the office of Senator Orrin Hatch, with the Capitol Police threatening to arrest protestors, in violation of the I Amendment.

As CBS’s CEO noted in the primaries: It [continual favourable coverage of Mr. Trump] may not be good for America, but it is damn good for CBS.

InfoWars (Alex Jones’s wingnut conspiracy Website) has confirmed it received White House Press credentials.

Even normally wingnut conservative blogs such as RedState are concerned over the developments over the last few days (RedState opposed Trump).

The regular press (not the alternative one) is now in real danger. The administration has already indicated it would cut them out.

We are at a crossroads: An authoritarian regime takes power with lightening speed: it usually only has a short window of opportunity before resistance develops and a coup fails.

The Age (an Australian newspaper) notes the USA has lost the moral ground to lecture other nations on democracy and human rights with the actions of the new administration.

They also noted the ways Mr. Trump could be removed from power:

1) Amendment XXV of the Constitution - Declaration he is unfit to serve in office
That would require VP Mike Pence and at least part of the Cabinet to bring the case to the GOP-controlled House. The Cabinet is full of fascists. The GOP has always been party-over-country. Moreover, audio captured at the Republican Retreat recently held in Philadelphia and published by the Washington Post notes that the most senior leadership of the House and Senate are afraid of their own voters. (Moreover, they have been stoking them to buy guns for eight years.)

2) Impeachment: The House brings a bill of “High Crimes and misdemeanours” and if passed, a trial is held in the Senate. See Item 1) about the GOP.

3) Election: Should we have one in 2020, the electorate could vote him out. Alternatively, an overwhelming turnout in 2018 could in theory put a Democratic majority in the House and Senate (despite the efforts of voter suppression and gerrymandering over the years by the GOP) - then see Item 2).

4) A military coup: There has never been a military uprising in the United States, as subservience to the civilian government is part of military doctrine from boot camp to retirement. The argument is that the military swears or affirms to “uphold and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” A fascist coup could be seen as a domestic enemy, but the legality of the military making such a claim would be legally dubious.

I would note that military coups are always disastrous for a nation, and rarely result in a democratic government afterwards. Elements and formations of the military will line up on both sides, and the outcome is usually quite destructive if a coup does not immediately decapitate the government.

In addition there are other ways not mentioned by The Age:

5) A general strike shutting down the economy. The nascent protests seen across the nation starting with the Women’s March and expanding to general protests over the unconstitutional executive order could turn into that. Protests have erupted again today across the nation.

6) Pressure from businesses: Instability is bad for business. Powerful business leaders could put pressure on the GOP to take action for the XXV Amendment, the quickest way to remove Mr. Trump. Their most powerful donors, the Koch Brothers, are already rumoured to have removed support at last week’s Republican retreat in Palm Springs.

7) Resignation: Mr. Trump could resign. A massive social media campaign is already underway questioning the loyalty of Mr. Trump’s staffers to him, mainly by liberals, and aimed at him. Due to his obsession with Twitter, he cannot have missed it. He was even trolled by a Democratic congressman in a press meeting today; the congressman referred to “President Bannon.” (Steve Bannon is part of the cabal informally known as the Fascist Steves by liberals. Steve Bannon was CEO of the fascist and racist right-wing Website swill known as breitbart (dot) com. The objective is for Mr. Trump to question the loyalty of his staffers, and maybe fire them.

8) Arrest: The CIA and FBI are still engaged in their investigation into allegations of Russian collusion with the Trump Campaign. Evidence of such collusion (or worse, evidence of passing national security information) would be grounds for arrest under the Espionage Act. That could conceivably include VP Mike Pence and Trump’s staff. That would also depend on whether the FBI could conduct an independent investigation (it is under the Department of Justice, an Executive branch). By law, the CIA is prohibited from operations on US soil, but could conceivably gather evidence from foreign sources.

However, after the Russian dossier was released by a British MI-6 agent to the press, a number of highly-placed intelligence assets in Russia have been murdered. Someone tipped off the Russian FSB, but who? Several of Mr. Trump’s inner circle have been to Russia and worked with the government, including his Director of National Intelligence, General Michal Flynn. Gen. Flynn and Dr. Jill Stein were both at the party celebrating propaganda outlet Russia Today in Moscow last year: Flynn sat next to Vladimir Putin, and Stein sat across from him. The photo is still available on Dr. Stein’s Green Party campaign Website.

It has been noted that the egregious executive orders have come out on Friday evenings. This is significant because Mr. Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner tends to keep Mr. Trump close and on-message. Kushner however is an Orthodox Jew, and is faithful (along with Ivanka Trump) at attending Shabbat on Friday sundown and does not work until Saturday sundown (in keeping with his religious faith). That gives the fascists and nihilists surrounding Mr. Trump a whole day without a check on their influence.

It has also been noted that the travel ban against seven Muslim-majority countries, including cancelling visas and seizing green cards, followed by investigations of electronic equipment and questioning loyalties to the Trump administration, are only being applied to nations where terrorist attacks have never occurred against the USA, and where Mr. Trump owns no business interest. The justification for the EO was 9/11 (fifteen years ago), but none of the countries where the attackers came from are on the ban list (and Mr. Trump owns properties in all of them).

We are now in a constitutional crisis. None of this is alarmist or conspiratorial, all of it has been reported in the mainstream press (except the refusal of orders by the Marshals Service - that was relayed by the reporter in the Twitter post linked at the top).

re: #193 Arkansawyer

Fuck any Republican who tries to claim they’re actions are backed by the will of the people. Arkansans passed a ballot measure for medical marijuana. Will of the people, right? Not according to the Repubs. One bill introduced today would ban the manufacture, sale, purchase or exchange of edibles. Another bill introduced would ban the smoking of medical marijuana anywhere in the state. But by all means, let’s continue to over prescribe pain meds.

Well, trump did meet with pharm people today. Increase in costs AND ban on medical pot. Yup, yup, yup.

I am trying very hard to have empathy for these folks that voted from trump and are now facing the consequences.

I am having little success.

This is because soon, their vote for trump is going to have consequences for every American when we lose Obamacare, SocSec, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. I simply cannot muster any empathy. All my empathy (and more) goes to the people who are affected by nothing they could control.

I hope Americans are strong enough not to watch The Trump Supremes Show tonight.

They need to get no ratings. Make it a complete dud.

Yeah — I admit I’m tempted —- but I can just hear almost as quick here or elsewhere online. Plus — for those who don’t know — since I subscribe to Direct TV Now (streaming TV) — I’m automatically a Nielsen Family. Other streaming live TV services like PS Vue operate the same way. So what I watch *is* directly counted in the ratings.

Twice in the last ten minutes I have gotten telephone calls from someone claiming “there is something wrong with my computer.”

I do not have caller ID on my dial phone so I can’t see these calls coming in; I hung up both times.

Someone trying to scam Western Nebraska for fraudulent claims representing computer firms is definitely calling the wrong area code.

Remember, do not respond YES to anyone. If they ask “Can you hear me?” hang up. There is a scam where they are calling people and recording them saying “Yes” and then using that recording to order shit - and threaten to take you to court if you don’t pay them.
