The BREXITeers were warned they were waking up a nationalistic nightmare:
Tight deadline for talks after nationalist surge in Northern Ireland
Northern Irish leaders prepared on Saturday for three weeks of challenging talks to save their devolved government after a snap election that could have dramatic implications for the politics and constitutional status of the British province.
The pro-British Democratic Unionist Party narrowly remained the largest party after the closest-ever election for the provincial assembly. But surging Irish nationalists Sinn Fein came within one seat of their rivals to deny unionist politicians a majority for the first time since Ireland was partitioned in 1921.
Major policy differences between the sides risk paralyzing government, dividing communities and creating an unwelcome distraction for Prime Minister Theresa May as she prepares to launch Britain’s formal divorce proceedings from the European Union later this month.

From Wiki:
In an after-credits scene, Xavier speaks to Moira McTaggert through the body of a comatose man, implying that his consciousness survived by transferring itself into the body (an action that Xavier had discussed at the beginning of the film as part of an ethics class, the question being if it would be ethically right for a mutant like himself to attempt such a transference, noting that the man in question was virtually brain-dead).
On the DVD Commentary, it is revealed that the body on Muir Island was a “P. Xavier”. One of the writers noted that this is an original twin brother, written for the scene, who was born braindead (due to Professor X’s amount of power). This brother can apparently walk but due to being in coma for a long time and braindead since birth, the brother is alluded to be in a restricted movement. This is an example of a comic book death; this scene was not in the script but was secretly added during filming.[1] Additionally, there is nothing in the film to suggest that the Juggernaut is related to Xavier, other than perhaps a shared British nationality.

OMG, that explains a lot of sick stuff!
This got some attention yesterday:
EU parliament member: Women should earn less because they are weaker, smaller, less intelligent
A radical Polish European Parliament lawmaker has launched another sexist tirade, calling it a “20th-century stereotype that women have the same intellectual potential as men,” and that the stereotype “must be destroyed because it is not true.”
Janusz Korwin-Mikke’s insults on Friday in Warsaw came two days after he told the European parliament that “women must earn less than men because they are weaker, they are smaller, they are less intelligent.”
[…]
In 2015, the foreign minister of Poland apologized after Korwin-Mikke raised his arm in a Nazi salute during a debate on plans for standardized ticketing on trips across EU borders.
[…]
To me, the important thing that gets overlooked is that a guy like this is where he is because Poles voted for him.
Hardly we should be surprised that the US elected (yeah, I know, not the popular vote) someone like Trump.

Shocker:
William F. Buckley, Jr. praised the book in 2004 as “a great novel” that raised questions on how to respond to massive illegal immigration.[9] In 2005 the conservative Chilton Williamson praised the book as “one of the most uncompromising works of literary reaction in the 20th century.”[10] In 2001 the Southern Poverty Law Center described it as “widely revered by American white supremacists and is a sort of anti-immigration analog to The Turner Diaries,”[11] and as recently as October 2015 condemned the novel as “the favorite racist fantasy of the anti-immigrant movement in the US.”[12]
The book returned to the bestseller list in 2011.[1]

I have a really stupid question about Twitter timestamps. If someone in NY tweets at 9 a.m. and someone in CA sees it, does it say 9 a.m. or 6 a.m.? If the shown times are local, what if the person in CA posts it on LGF? What time would that show?
re: #58 Jay C
I’m a bit caught up on aesthetics as politics recently, but I feel it’s something to consider.
(note: there is an interesting documentary about art and the NSDAP—the Aesthetics of Doom—that addresses this. It’s also touched on in Eco’s essay, 13 Ways of Looking at a Blackshirt.)
These are people who don’t like complexity, and most especially don’t like context or change of perspective. They pursue confirmation in their emotional lives much like they pursue confirmation in their epistemology: working backwards to find “truth” from what they take to be a priori valid. Most importantly, they operate from the assumption that their feelings are objective, and thus it is a Good for them to feel at ease.
Think about how that must effect how they both consume and create art. What kind of stories will they find accessible, moving? Who can they identify with as a protagonist? How do they address abstraction and the surreal?
Their politics aren’t really politics, just ego-fulfillment—hence the vast conspiracies that are holding them down, and the power fantasies of what they could have when they “win”—and avoiding self-reflection and empathy—everybody else is irrational, emotional, and unworthy. Their art isn’t really art, it’s also ego-fulfillment and avoidance of self-reflection and empathy.
They like banal, sentimental art that makes them feel good. Stuff that makes them think differently, stuff that makes them feel heavier things…no. This is why they’ve latched on to Cultural Bolshevism/Marxism: it makes their aesthetic politics *and* adversarial: to non-conform from a standard set of tropes, styles, and images is to be a moral hazard and/or a psychological deviant. Anybody that presents the world differently is part of a conspiracy to destroy the world.
Of course they like shitty power fantasies about violence and sex. They view their real lives as some kind of pulp-heroic self-narrative, in which they’re both super powerful and put upon, and everybody that stands in their way is majescule-W Wrong and gets what they deserve.

Twitter’s timestamps show the time it was tweeted, localized to the time of the person viewing it.
LGF timestamps are always in Pacific time.
To clarify - a tweet posted in an LGF comment shows Twitter’s localized time.

Ten Questions for President Trump - Lawfare By Benjamin Wittes
Here are my questions, about all of which I am, I want to stress, entirely serious:
1. Are you making the allegation that President Obama conducted electronic surveillance of Trump Tower in your capacity as President of the United States based on intelligence or law enforcement information available to you in that capacity?
2. If so—that is, if you have executive branch information validating that either a FISA wiretap or a Title III wiretap took place—have you reviewed the applications for the surveillance and have you or your lawyers concluded that they lack merit?
…
7. If you were tweeting not based on knowledge received as chief executive of the United States, were you tweeting in your capacity as a reader of Breitbart or a listener of Mark Levin’s radio show?
…
OK, I gave you a taste, but you’ll need to give them their page views for the rest.

It’s hard to guess where all this will end… except in a further mess. Messes beget messes.
All those people who voted for Trump will not go away. True, many just pulled the (R) lever, and others were so programmed against Clinton that it didn’t matter who the Republican happened to be.
Still, Trump had his millions of supporters. True believers in the nativist ideology. Delusional creationists who think Trump is just another David With Sins.
This is our society, in which we live and will continue to face even if Trump gets run out of office.
What Happens When We Don’t Believe the President’s Oath?
“…the President is less of a liar than a bullshitter, in the sense described by the philosopher Harry Frankfurt. A bullshitter in this technical sense is a person who does not aim to obscure the truth so much as operates without any relationship to truth whatsoever. The liar, Frankfurt says, must have some knowledge of the facts at hand, in order to conceal them. But to the bullshitter, facts are nothing more than an irrelevance.
In Frankfurt’s argument, this is what makes bullshit dangerous: the liar makes the key concession that “there are indeed facts that are in some way determinable or knowable.” Bullshit, on the other hand, glibly rejects the value and even existence of knowable facts.
Trump’s bullshit raised questions of its own when he was in the running for the presidency. But now that he has sworn the oath of office, we are forced to confront what it means for a bullshitter to have promised to faithfully execute the office of President and to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States and the country’s larger legal system. Bullshit, after all, is kind of the opposite of law, which is an organized system of meaning….”
I think there is much to this:
Trump’s entire career, he’s been able to say one thing & do another.
Now the media scrutinizes EVERY move.

The reality is most wingnuts only want a functioning government in one narrow instance: When they’re in charge and only for the purpose of keeping them in charge. Those “checks and balances” they talked up so much the past 8 years? When a Republican is in charge, they view those as an unnecessary hindrance rather than a vital part of a representative democracy.
That’s right. Trump fans are so far out in outer space they think the freaking FISA COURT is liberal.

re: #104 Targetpractice
It’s hard to tell if there are people who are seriously inquiring Trump about this because they want to catch him in a lie…or because they seriously believe that he’s the “victim” of a grand conspiracy.
I really hope that this is a case of “lie”, i.e. there was no “wiretap”, or that Trump’s people were either not involved in any investigation or were hugely peripheral to it, and that our Idiot-in-Chief is merely making a fool out of himself (all to easy, sadly) over “fake news”.
Because I think that the Trump WH is - even at this relatively early date - rapidly getting overwhelmed by the ceaseless beat of Russia-related scandals, and that they will be (if they aren’t already) desperate to cast ANY shred of doubt or deflection they possibly can onto the ongoing stream of corruption charges (which is what they are): and painting the President and his creatures as “victims” is probably the only way they accomplish that.
Well, that, and getting their pals in the “alt-media” to try to cast shade on any and all allegations they can. And given the proclivities of today’s RW media, that’s all too easy - even if stupid crap like that in Comment #81 is typical. Just as they will seize on even the least flaw or inconsistency in any (critical) media charge to discredit the entire thing, they will magnify even the smallest grain of truth in a contrary report to validate their “victimization” claim, or whatever. And the “mainstream” media will probably just go along….
re: #138 Charles Johnson
The word “liberal” is just an empty set.
Anything they don’t like, they put in that set.

Funny how RWNJs are all for the FISA court…except when it’s pointed in their directions, then it’s a liberal tool.

We’re not thrilled about threats to our fuel supply, for one thing.
Security experts say Donald Trump’s election as US President warrants another look at Australia’s fuel security and could justify another Defence Force Posture Review.
Australian Strategic Policy Institute expert Andrew Davies said the international security situation had “certainly taken a turn for the worse” after Mr Trump’s election.
“If you look at some of the Trump administration rhetoric about the South China Sea for example, you could easily see them stumbling into a confrontation with China,” Mr Davies said.
The thing with Australia was over the refugee swap deal. As weird of a deal that it was, it did serve some purposes.
Trump in a nativistic outburst trashed the idea. Now the Australians are once again having to agonize over what to do with a bunch of refugees that they’re afraid to let into the country because it will probably encourage a wave of more refugees.

Town Hall with Rep Sensenbrenner in Delafield today. The congressman did not actually answer one single question.
“He introduced the Build The Wall Bill, which he is very excited about. When asked how we’ll pay for it since Mexico will not, he said they will make the “Mexican drug lords” pay for it by seizing their assets. How we will get their assets out of Mexico and wherever else the money is tucked away is not a question he cared to dignify with an answer. “The bad Mexicans will pay for it and the good Mexicans will he happy.” Seriously. He said that.”
………
“… He went berserk when a man pointed out Sensenbrenner is one of the wealthiest congressmen with a net worth over $22 million. The man explained some tax loophole/credit thing that Sensenbrenner would be able to take advantage of if they repealed the ACA. Sensenbrenner said he was worth only $11 million, and he wouldn’t let the man finish his question because he was questioning the Congressman’s integrity. He turned red and was just furious. The man seemed to have hit a nerve.”

There’s this:
Donald Trump’s America shows why Australians are turning to Pauline Hanson
[…] But none of the people I spoke to believe that politicians really understand them.
Well, not all politicians. There is one exception: Pauline Hanson.
“She’s honest,” one person said.
Another said: “She tells it straight.”
A man in his 20s, just laid off from work, pushing a pram with his young daughter, said: “She’s one of us.”
What does Pauline Hanson have that Malcolm Turnbull or Bill Shorten don’t? Ask these people and the answer is simple: she is real. She speaks for them. They are prepared to forgive her.
“She’s crazy, but good,” said one young woman.
[…]
The pressures of modernity on the human psyche are notable. That story starts out with an example of fundamentalist Christian-talk, and transitions to a general malaise that theoretically could be about economics.
But it’s really not.
The real issue is that modernity has no place for God, and that is starting to bother some people in places where religion was always taken for granted.
My assertion, repeated here: The current malaise in America (and perhaps Australia, and a few other places) is about the Loss-of-God problem.

Ah, that reminds me, I didn’t get a chance to mention what happened when my representative showed up last week for his own town hall. Sadly I couldn’t attend the first due to work-related matters (“emergency meeting”), but it seems that our own Scott Taylor is trying to thread the needle because he wants to be reelected next year and the natives are restless. What will probably hurt him the most was declaring that universal health care is not a “right,” when his party’s actively trying to fuck over a region that has a higher-than-average ratio of retirees to active workers.

Interesting article. Kinda centers in Mensch who sounds whackier and whackier with every passing moment.
The story starts with this Louise Mensch story. For those who don’t know, Mensch is a former Tory Member of Parliament turned American rock promoter wife. Since quitting Parliament to spend more time with her family, she has become a pundit known for taking reasonable observations, injecting just a bit of whack, and turning them into fairly unhinged theories. Perhaps her best known foray into investigative work is when she unknowingly used her own racist search history to impugn a Jeremy Corbyn supporter. In spite of her still apparent tolerance for racism, she offered up her support to Hillary on Valentines Day in 2016. Of late, she has been writing unified theories of Russian spying that start from real nuggets and important observations, then spin loose from the actual supporting evidence.

— Eric Boehlert (@EricBoehlert) March 4, 2017
It makes perfect sense, given what we know about Comrade Combover. Much like the Yemen raid, he was probably promised that going quiet for a few days after his “presidential” speech would wipe the Russia matter off the radar for awhile. The press would gush over how awesome his “pivot” was, he’d make the Democrats look like fools for opposing him, and he’d get political capital he could spend with his travel ban EO “revision.”
Instead, the very next day the WaPo blew the lid off the Sessions’ pressure cooker, leading to a recusal that the White House was visibly opposed to. I can’t imagine that Donny meeting with Sessions in Mar-a-Lago, with the press off the premises, is for any other reason than to read him the Riot Act in his loudest and whiniest voice for not sticking with the plan.

The Sunday Funnies will be hilarious tomorrow, if only because the conservative press is going to have to find some way to now address the events of the past 72 hours in some way that looks sympathetic to Trump. Any hope that they’d spend all their time gushing over his speech is kinda gone now.

He’s also co-sponsor of this bill:
Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D | Los Angeles County) and Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Massachusetts) introduced H.R. 669 and S. 200, the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017. This legislation would prohibit the President from launching a nuclear first strike without a declaration of war by Congress. The crucial issue of nuclear “first use” is more urgent than ever now that President Donald Trump has the power to launch a nuclear war at a moment’s notice.

Here’s the thing. If Trump is dirty, so is Pence. No that it matters because we would wings up with Pres. Ryan. There’s no getting around that. Obama did not have control over both houses for 2 years, he had a filibuster-proof majority for all of 4 months. When he took office, there were 57 Democrats and 2 Independents, which (if you can do basic math) added up to 59 votes. Why? Franken wasn’t seated because Coleman demanded a recount that wasn’t finished until July. Then Kennedy suffered a seizure and never returned to office before his death in September. And Byrd had a bout of illness that saw him gone until July as well. Then Specter switched parties and the DNC had 59 votes again, followed by Paul Kirk being appointed to a temporary term in September after Ted died. So from September 2009 to January 2010 (when Scott Brown took office), Obama had 60 reliable Senate votes.
And in that time, he managed to get the ACA passed and that was the only thing that he ultimately got passed with his “total control.”
Welcome to reality, Bros.

They most certainly are. Another ‘reel’ American shot a Sikh man in Kent, Washington today. The Sikh man was working on his car when a masked white male approached him, told him to, “Go back to your own country,” and opened fire on him, shooting him in the arm. The Kent PD has called for assistance from the FBI and other LE agencies for help in finding the assailant. This incident is being investigated as a hate crime. What these ignorant beings don’t take the time to think about is that if they commit crimes against others, they will be caught and in many instances, hate crime charges will apply, and if they’re convicted, they’ll spend years behind bars. It’s a d*mn shame that we have so many ignorant citizens who act impulsively and attack/kill/harm others for no reason. Such frivolities as they are, the also illustrate to me how little we can change an outcome, once a choice has been made.
Take a game of “Block”, one of the common games using dominoes. With 4 players, each player only gets 5 “bones”, which means only 20 of the 28 in the pack are actually in play. So often a player may have only one choice of a domino to play. Once the first player starts and chooses the opening block, there are only a small set of possible outcomes in the universe of the game.
And even as a player with more than one possible play, sometimes it really does not matter what choice one makes, in regards to the outcome of the game.
The opening play sets the course for the entire game.
Just something to think about…

Well then, you’re probably REALLY going to hate the gush of toxic bullshit the Administration is no doubt going to push on the country via its new “VOICE” program: yep, our tax dollars are going to be used to try to swamp the media with horror-stories about Evil Criminal Illegal Alien Scumbags, and the ghastly crimes they have perpetrated on innocent American citizens (hopefully they MAY try to mitigate the hatemongering by making a few of the victims people of color - maybe: we’ll have wait and see). Trump used these folks as props at the RNC and all through the campaign to get support for his “immigration policy” - i.e. draconian police-state roundups and mass deportations - now they can tell their tales on the government’s tab.
PS: This comment shouldn’t be taken as lacking sympathy for these families’ tragedies: I can’t imagine the pain of losing a loved one to violent crime (whoever the perpetrator might be). Of course, facts and figures as to the rarity of such crimes, and the general law-abiding character of most “undocumenteds” belie the xenophobic narrative the Admin wants to push: but when have these creatures ever let mere facts get in the way of a good hate??

I don’t think the Talking Yam [TY] realizes it yet, but his unhinged tweet created more problems for him than it solved. Instead of making the inquiries into his and some of his associates’ secret communications with Russian and Ukrainian government officials decrease, his tweet put them front and center and back on the front-page, so to speak. I also don’t think he realizes that his tweet screams, “I’m guilty!” of having done something I know was wrong. Tweeting falsely that #44 had a FISA warrant that authorized tapping his phones is a mighty fine way to encourage the MSM to keep digging. WH journalists reported that the TY was pissed that Sessions recused himself from investigating Russia/Ukraine/Trump ties, and I know why—-Sessions was his ‘get out of jail free card’ in the DOJ.

re: #348 Skip Intro
At this point any attempt to remove Trump from office for cause will start a civil war. The crazies have been fully primed for it for nearly a year now and Trump’s Axis of Stupids are just waiting to light the fuse.
The election of Trump is something we’re not just going to walk away from. Trump/Bannon will see the country burn first.
They’re going to have to deal with it.
re: #343 majii
I don’t think the Talking Yam [TY] realizes it yet, but his unhinged tweet created more problems for him than it solved.
What’s really depressing is, this phrase has already become a clichéd template for the Trump Administration - can apply to virtually everything this incompetent charlatan has done - and the Admin is only six weeks old…..

We have what I am going to call a racism problem in my seriously white city. Have you seen the “Back the Blue” flags, the dark US flags with a blue stripe? I cannot stand them. Not only do they disrespect the US flag, but they’re entire purpose is the whole “Blue Lives Matter” idiocy. There are a lot of them as yard signs and bumper stickers, but someone has it flying as an actual flag.
I got a call from an organization named “Blue Lives Matter”. Didn’t even pick up the phone since I didn’t want to give them a piece of my mind. There has never been any doubt that police lives’ matter.

If she loves Russia so damned much, why didn’t she bring a Russian flag to wave?
re: #350 Stanley Sea
Love his avatar. Trump supporters really are delusional if they think Trump is above criticism after how their side went after President Obama for 8 straight years.

Looks like the handle to a fly swatter to me.
re: #160 Targetpractice
“wildly popular conservative president”? Who is that? Couldn’t be referring to the low rated buffoon in the White House. Talk about alternative facts.

I’m ignorant, but … ugh?
The thing she’s holding is colored like the Russian flag.

Yeah, I see that. It is says Thanks Russia on it. I’m assuming she is thanking Russia for giving her DT. I’m sorry! I was looking for something more obscure!

Man. Trump is losing the WSJ (And a lot of those who comment there). Bodes poorly for this lunatic president.
I was thinking that if Putin really wanted to mess up Trump, he would say “Yeah, we meddled in the election, but we didn’t expect you idiots to vote Trump into office.” But, one of the things that Putin wants from Trump is to end the sanctions, so he can’t say anything right now.

As long as he has Fox, Breitbart, Alex Jones and talk radio he won’t care since Trump doesn’t read.

It always was National Racists.
They’ve never gotten over the Nazis losing the war.
As often as Trump is at Mar a Lago, I imagine him putting his sarcophagus there, a gold sarcophagus, and adding 12 more sarcophagi around him, for the 12 apostles, just like Constantine did, so he can keep up his con of the religious marks even after death.

That’s been Bannon’s plan for ages.

Yeah but the drip drip drip of losing folks that voted for him will not give him the support here’s going to need if the shit really hits the fan.
re: #380 Joe Bacon
He should sue AOL for sending him those CDs.
re: #379 Romantic Heretic
There is no doubt in my mind that the Bannon and his Bratfrats have as their only goal destruction, in their own name for their own glory. There is nothing good there, just hateful delusion.

With a compromised FBI and Justice Dept. I’m just not seeing how that’s going to happen. The GOP sure isn’t going to do anything.
re: #11 Charles Johnson
Ah ha. Found the problem. It was a messed up copy/paste in Shiplord Kirel’s private comment. Fixed now.
Eek! I go away for a while and return to find that I had accidentally poisoned the hamsters. I most humbly apologize and beseech your forgiveness. I’m glad to see they’re recovering. This also explains the job offer I got from rt.com and that mysterious chap who called himself “Steve Harkonnen” and said he wanted to talk to me.

We’ll see, won’t we?
But that shitshow this morning was more illuminating about Trump than Obama. At some point, the rotting corpse will drive the R’s out of the room to escape the reek.
re: #353 HappyWarrior
Me too! I hope he gets some great roles soon. He’s got the chops to do alot of really good stuff.
re: #353 HappyWarrior
Cheadle is one of my favorite actors.
Well, if you haven’t watched House of Lies, get thee to a streaming service and DO (bonus of Kristen Bell as his costar)
re: #57 Blind Frog Belly White
I suppose he could always read Lucifer’s Hammer, where the black people all turn cannibal and the good white farmers have to make a stand against them and defend the last nuclear powerplant.
Wait wut? I read that when I was a kid and loved it. My reading comprehension was proudly not great at that age. Is that what happened? I mean I remember the fight against the cannibals but don’t recall them being black. That sucks.
