I’m watching back-to-back MST3K movies right now on Comet TV. The first movie is “Eegah.” Funny, campy stuff in this movie.

You know what else we haven’t seen? Any indication that Assad is upset, concerned, or really even noticed the fact that his country was attacked by the United States. It’s almost as if he’s in on the kabuki…

Things getting interesting.

Officials in the Trump administration on Sunday demanded that Russia stop supporting the Syrian government or face a further deterioration in its relations with the United States.

Signaling the focus of talks that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is set to have in Moscow this week, officials said that Russia, in propping up Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, bears at least partial responsibility for Wednesday’s chemical attack on villagers in Idlib province.

“I hope Russia is thinking carefully about its continued alliance with Bashar al-Assad, because every time one of these horrific attacks occurs, it draws Russia closer into some level of responsibility,” Tillerson said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“Easy answer. Trump doesn’t know.”

Apparently, Haley and Tillerson don’t know either. They have given conflicting responses to journalists on the matter. Many on the right are pointing at the shiny object and aren’t questioning anything about why Trump decided to launch missiles at a Syrian airbase that accomplished absolutely nothing. They’re too busy praising Trump’s “courage” and “strength” and aren’t concerned about the implications of his decision. Trump needed a distraction from the Russia/Trump investigation, and he got it, but the question is, “For how long?” I don’t think his distractions will be successful over time in making the Trump/Russia investigations go away. I remember Nixon & Co. trying to make Watergate go away, but their illegal deeds caught up to them in the end.

You see the picture of the situation room they released after the attack? It copies the photo of Obama, et al, during the bin Laden raid.

This is theater. The GOP has already moved away from actual policy towards calculated outrages and drama, and been encouraged in their stagecraft by venues like FOX that are willing to let them roleplay. But we’ve now reached the point where there’s only versimilitude; what is doesn’t matter, just what it looks like.

But the Intelligence Community, Congress, most of the major media, and (probably) the Supreme Court are all covering for him. What possible good result is there? How is anything going to “catch up to them”?

He’s probably trying to charm her, but he doesn’t know who/what Ms. Pelosi is. She’ll smile in his face, make him feel comfortable, and will always have her political shiv ready to use to stab him in the back because she knows Trump’s #1 concern is for Trump and not the American people. Leader Pelosi shares what I call a “southern trait,” in that she can be cordial toward those with whom she disagrees but recognize she’s dealing with a rattlesnake at the same time. Trump and his supporters shouldn’t let the expression on her face in this photo fool them. She’s not the fool or the dupe Trump might be thinking she is. She has way more political experience than he does, and she’s smarter than he is.

“How is anything going to “catch up to them”?”

I’m hoping the media keeps the pressure on Trump & Co. to a point where more Americans and the international community becomes aware of Trump & Co’s ties to the Russian government. They may not pay, legally speaking, due to reasons you mentioned, but I’m hoping they’ll pay politically, sooner rather than later. I know Sessions, the GOPers in Congress and the conservative-majority SCOTUS are more loyal to the GOP than they are to the nation and its citizens, but I remain hopeful that more Americans will become aware of their corruption and party over nation loyalty and help us send some in Congress, Trump, and Sessions, into early retirement. A girl can hope, can’t she?

This makes the assumption that any reform will happen or take its place if they put the shiv to Obamacare. Most carriers would likely be more than willing to squeeze blood from whatever stones they have left until the only recourse is to, of course, make poverty a capital offense. Then only the healthy and well off will be alive and able to afford insurance and the companies will all live on, prosper into a great new corporate utopia free of all those Fake Americans and their dying.

The only ones who I see taking any kind of action will be those in the Eurozone and maybe Japan and Korea with even tighter restrictions/sanctions on Russia. And maybe, if someone has the brass balls to do it, the rest of the Five Eyes community should start selectively blinding the US eye after that useless fireworks display in Syria as a warning to Hair Furor to stop fucking around and get serious for a change. I believe it’s going to be a hella lot more than 24 million people.
We’re not just talking people who got health insurance because of Medicaid expansion.
We’re talking people who were previously uninsurable because of previous conditions and premiums were ridiculously expensive.
We’re talking entrepreneurs who took that huge leap of faith and quit their deadend jobs to start their businesses because they didn’t have to stay for employer-provided health insurance that was ridiculously expensive and pretty much useless.
We’re talking small businesses that could finally provided affordable group health insurance for their employees.
We’re talking people who found themselves suddenly unemployed and anyone who has ever seen COBRA as their only option knows that is not a fiscally viable option.

It’s not just poor people that benefited from ACA, it’s a lot LOT more.

Yanno, I said this before, but here’s the thing: I wouldn’t necessarily have a problem with Drumpf golfing so much. It is a stressful job, and God only knows how much of a break I could use from my own stressful job, let alone running the executive branch of the United States of America. The problem here is that 1) he tries to hide it, and 2) he is such a hypocrite in indulging in so many golfing trips when he criticized his predecessor for what he perceived as too much golf. Own up to it, admit you’re not up to it, and then when we kick your ass out of office, have the dignity to accept defeat with grace.

Backwoods_Sleuth  Apr 9, 2017 • 8:11:12pm

I’m shocked. Are you shocked?

The proposed rule would require airlines and ticket agents to clearly disclose to consumers all customer-specific fee information, including charges for a first and second checked bag and a carry-on bag, wherever fare and schedule information is provided to consumers. It also would mandate that the baggage fee information be disclosed, adjacent to the fare, at the first point in a search process where a fare is listed in connection with a specific flight itinerary.

These extra fees, sometimes revealed only at the last minute, are an enduring cause of aggravation for air travelers — and an abundant source of revenue for the airline industry. So, when the business-friendly Trump administration came to power, the airline industry lobbied hard to kill the supplemental rulemaking.

When the rulemaking was suspended in March, the airline industry couldn’t stop applauding. Nicholas Calio, chief executive of the industry trade group Airlines for America, called the decision “a common-sense measure reinforcing that the airline industry is capable of making the decisions that best serve our customers, our employees and the communities we serve.”

How did the suspension serve passengers? The organization didn’t respond to my request for an explanation.

This is interesting:

A Russian computer programmer has been arrested in Barcelona, a spokesman for the Russian embassy in Madrid said on Sunday.

It was unclear why Pyotr Levashov was arrested. The embassy spokesman declined to give details and Spanish police and the interior ministry were not available for comment.

RT, the Russian government-backed television channel, reported that Levashov had been arrested under a US international arrest warrant and was suspected of being involved in hacking attacks linked to alleged interference in last year’s US election.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for the criminal division of the US justice department, said: “The US case remains under seal, so we have no information to provide at this time.”

I like this paragraph at the end of the article:

RT has the specific mission to counter the narrative of the so-called “mainstream media” and often does not even attempt balanced coverage of global events.

I guess that if you don’t care about people’s wellbeing, you don’t become a nurse. My mother was one. (From her tales of woe, the desperation also plays a big part.)

But statistically, most of the white nurses you work with vote Republican; I honestly don’t know how they compartmentalize. It happens, though. My boss asked me last summer if I thought the economy was improving, I said “yes,” and he looked at me like I’d grown another head.

A Spotify executive was among those killed during an attack in Stockholm on Friday, CEO Daniel Ek has confirmed. Chris Bevington, who had worked at Spotify for five years and served as its director of global partnerships and business development, was hit by a truck driven deliberately into pedestrians while walking in one of Stockholm’s shopping areas.

Ek paid tribute to the British-born Bevington via Facebook, saying that as a member of “our band,” he had a great impact on “not just the business but on everyone who had the privilege to know and work with him.”

Some of the best music ever recorded is full of off key singing and mistakes.

A good example is Soft Cell’s “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye”, where Marc Almond’s singing is at points as flat as a pancake, and yet that’s an integral part of what is a genuinely beautiful heartfelt song. It’s telling that years later, when Marc had improved as a singer, he went back and re-recorded some of his old songs, years later he said he regretted doing so, because although the vocals were technically better, they lacked the feeling of the originals.

Soft Cell - Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

That’s not to say autotune can’t be used creatively. The reason I felt it worked in Cher’s “Believe” was it was being used sporadically as an effect against an already powerful voice that didn’t need autotune. Similarly, when it’s an integral part of the sound of an act (eg Eiffel 65) that I’m okay with that. It’s when there’s absolutely no need for it, and it’s used anyway that I find it really grating.

I met a freelance client at his golf club once; I was mystified by his instructions to just go downstairs and into the men’s room, and I’d see him. Behind the men’s room door there was a whole restaurant and set of club rooms made off limits to the women members, because it was inside the men’s restroom.

When was this and where?

I once got an *excellent* bounty for volunteering off an over-booked flight.

When I moved to NYC from CA, the overbooked flight was to JFK and the flight they switched me to was to Newark. I had 8 pieces of checked baggage that they delivered to my apt so I didn’t have to go through baggage claim. My seat on the new flight was first class. Plus I got a voucher for a free round-trip that I had up to six months to use.

The usual procedure is to solicit volunteers by offering vouchers or an upgrade to first class for the next flight, not violently dragging out someone by the armpits.

I like flying, but they really nickle and dime you anymore. I especially like the take off and turbulence, especially when the wings flap up and down. One time we were landing in Chicago and the plane wouldn’t go down. Usually the pilots maintain their approach with the throttle, but he kept slowing down and we kept staying up, so finally he put the nose down and I was sort of hanging in my seat belt. We wound up having to go around.

Greets and saluts from the resistance in the sunny and warm NYC metro area.

Trump had one of those strategy sessions for his staffers to try and turn things around just 70+ days into his shitshow of an administration, and of course, all the details of what a mess things are leaked.

How could it not?

Priebus, Bannon, and Kushner are all trying to push their own identities/agendas on to a bunch of incompetents who don’t know any better, and they’re all getting pushback because they’re all incapable of realizing that they don’t have a coherent message that starts at the top.

Trump is incoherent, ignorant, and that pervades everything he does. Trump’s reactionary. The only thing that he truly reacts to is ratings and how actions inure benefits to him.

That’s why he carried out a bombing in Syria. It wasn’t the kids. It wasn’t the chemical weapons. It’s that he thought it would help boost his sagging ratings and deflect attention from the ongoing Russia scandal. That didn’t work out too well. While many in the media thought this was yet another pivot, the airstrike barely registered with Assad since the base was back up and running hours later. The successful raid barely stopped a single base for a few hours. Sweepers, man your brooms.

A few people will claim that this keeps Assad from using chemical weapons again. That assumes way too much - and ignores that Assad used them all because Trump had signaled he wasn’t going to do regime change.

So, back to this strategy session. Some involved thought it was like being in 5th grade. A few others are complaining to the media that others complained to the media that there’s no strategy and it’s all incoherence all the time.

Well, buckle up buttercups - there’s only incoherence and incompetence from Trump. That’s all he does. Luck got him the win, and we can’t assume luck will keep the nation safe from Trump and his excremental decisions. GOP owns and enables all Trump does. They haven’t stopped supporting Trump, because the shared goals remain the same.

Here’s some more details from the Louisville Courier-Journal about the forcible removal of a passenger.

Passengers were told at the gate that the flight was overbooked and United, offering $400 and a hotel stay, was looking for one volunteer to take another flight to Louisville at 3 p.m. Monday. Passengers were allowed to board the flight, Bridges said, and once the flight was filled those on the plane were told that four people needed to give up their seats to stand-by United employees that needed to be in Louisville on Monday for a flight. Passengers were told that the flight would not take off until the United crew had seats, Bridges said, and the offer was increased to $800, but no one volunteered.

courier-journal.com

If this report is true, then United did not overbook the flight. They filled the plane, and standby passengers in that case would be SOL. But, these standbys were special, and I suppose United has no other way to move its staff around other than to clonk random passengers on their heads and haul them bodily off the plane.

Yeah, I think I’ll fly American from now on. United’s operations department must have studied under Roman slave masters.

There’s conveniences, and then there’s stuff that makes me go whaaa??

I get there’s kitniyot- stuff that Ashkenazi don’t eat and Sephardi do, because there’s some items that may appear to be chametz and the idea is not to eat them since they may be confused.

So, why then are the food manufacturers putting together food items that mimic chametz items? How are they not kitniyot in spirit, if not in the legal stricture?

IMO, I think kitniyot is something where Ashkenazi got it wrong.

My budget does not allow business class, unfortunately. I’m lucky to be able to get Economy Plus. Non-US carriers at least give their economy passengers sufficient knee and hip room, though.

We only flew biz class to Vietnam due to our adoption happening over Spring Break. Every other seat was full & the extra expense was a huge part of us having to declare bankruptcy a few years later. But oh, it was an amazing experience. I’ve been to famous restaurants and been served worse meals.

I’ve promised myself to fly business class at least once across the Pacific. The university provides a round-trip coach ticket each year, so the upgrade would be on my nickel.

This is why I always eyeroll when a Republican politician or one of his wingnut followers will champion a multi-million/billion dollar “investment” made by a major company as though it means thousands of jobs will be created. These days, that word means more like the current robots on the assembly line are being replaced/upgraded/refit, the operating software replaced/upgraded, and perhaps a few new workers brought on to the line.

Every day brings another example of the hypocrisy that exists in modern conservatism. Trump works banker hours, he goes on vacation every weekend, he signs EOs without reading them and pushes legislation he hasn’t the first idea about, and so many other things that wingnuts would have spent weeks over if committed by Obama or Hillary.

There’s virtually no depth that they will not sink to at this point.

Rick Wilson (yeah, that Rick Wilson) sums it up perfectly:

“As long as Trump is president, there will never be a pivot,” Wilson wrote. “There is no better version of Trump, simply waiting for the right org chart or the right staffer…”

“Trump is faced with terrible options when it comes to rearranging the deck chairs on the SS White House, and those of us who warned you this was inevitable are ordering popcorn,” Wilson said. “The cancer in the presidency isn’t his staff — though they reflect his shoddy intellect, his shallow impulsiveness, his loose grasp of reality, and Chinese-menu ideology. The problem is Trump himself, and nothing and no one can change that.”

That’s why the media seems to be so overjoyed with the missile strike, because they want to see it as the “rising to the challenge” moment they have believed would see Trump start to be presidential and grow into the office. But the reality is the exact opposite, it wasn’t a “rise to the challenge,” it was Trump being the reactionary doofus we’ve seen him be since he threw his hairpiece into the race.

King doesn’t quite get that the reason Bannon is presently being moved towards the door is exactly the reason King and the wingnut base support him: He’s seen as the mover and shaker in the White House. He’s been the mastermind (assumed or confirmed) of several moves on Trump’s part that have backfired spectacularly. And with Flynn gone, he’s now the odd man out of a cabal that’s increasingly coalescing around Trump’s need to get the GOP on his side if he wants to pass any legislation in the next four years.

I am thinking more and more the reason so many people watch Fox is not that Fox lies or twists truths, or cheers for the GOP team as much as it fits what the Fox viewer would really like things to be even knowing they are not.

It is political news fantasy. Political science fiction.

It allows the viewer to actually get away from facts and reality and have it the way they wished it would be.

I have relatives that are actually intelligent, but they watch that crap anyway. I don’t believe they think a lot of it is true. But damn, they sure do like to wallow in it like it is true.

I guess it is a suspension of reality and just lets them get their hate on and in time they actually react to it, but not in a knowing way. They can take the fantasy to the polls when they vote.

Centcom’s CYA maneuver comes several days too late, as we’ve heard since the strike that the chem weapon stores were deliberately avoided to prevent the deaths of Russians working on the base. Not to the mention the premature backslapping “total destruction” reports that fell apart almost as soon as we found out the Russians had been given advance notice of the strike and then pictures came out showing that the “destruction” had been limited.

re: #319 makeitstop

Those meatheads really think Trump is going to ‘crush’ his own daughter? The one he’s made de facto First Lady?

That ain’t gonna happen. Not in this reality.

It’s desperation time for them, as they’re coming to the realization that Trump’s about the sell the whole lot of them out. What we’re watching is what happens when the cult figures out that their leader is a cheating fraud and all the shit he sold them on is not coming true.

I think Spicer, Conway or Miller would be likely candidates.

re: #312 Khal Wimpo (wounded at Bowling Green)

Just checked in on the Breitbart site to see how the push towards having a Bannon-Kushner detente is going.

Not so well, it seems.

Go a little deeper into the swamps, and the full “KILL THE JEWS!” rhetoric starts surfacing. So I paged this.

But the spelling and grammar remain impeccable!

In other news—it’s nice to be a Republican Governor in Alabama:

The Alabama Ethics Commission last week found reason to believe he committed four crimes, all of them felonies.

If he agrees to a deal it is thought he will have to plead to at least a misdemeanor.

If he’d been caught with killer weed, he’d probably have gotten life without parole.

re: #283 Belafon

I saw a picture that purported to show where the missiles landed. It looked like, for some reason, the missiles meant to take out the base’s defences.

Which is good if there was meant to be a follow up airstrike. Say with concrete dibber bombs.

If there was no follow up strike planned then why bother? If the base had meant to be taken out of action why not target the tank farm, storage facilities, workshops, and yes, the chemical weapons themselves?

The whole thing was so obviously the military equivalent of a show trial. That so many people have fallen for it speaks sadly for our species.

Even if the chem munitions are binary, a downwind plume would be best avoided.

Nobody should ever use autotune. I’d rather hear them sing off key and mean it, than cover it up with this craven autotune bullshit.

I suspect by the time the numbers finally come out, we’re going to learn that the financial cost to United for this massive fuck-up could have covered the cost of buying their workers tickets on another plane.

If a flight is overbooked how in the fuck does the airline try to resolve that by pulling already embarked passengers off the plane? It’s first come first served, the answer is to stop boarding once the plane is full not pull shit like this.
