This evening I watched The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks on HBO. They definitely tried to shoehorn too much into 90 minutes and I recommend reading the book first if you really want to understand the subject matter. On the other hand the performances were solid all round and Oprah reaffirmed that she can fucking act her ass off when she finds the right material.

Since December 2015, the automated Twitter account @EveryTrumpDonor has been tweeting, one by one, the names, hometowns, occupations and employers of people who contributed as little as $200 to Trump’s campaign. Each tweet follows the same formula: “I’m [name]. On [date] I gave $[donation] to @realDonaldTrump. I work as a [job] at [company].”

Donors’ personal information is publicly available from the Federal Election Commission. Journalists often use the FEC database to identify high-dollar donors and to spot trends — a gusher of cash from Wall Street bankers flowing to one candidate, for example.

washingtonpost.com

Okay…reposting public FEC data is not “doxxing” in my book.

And, no, I’m not being hypocritical in the least because my home address, and (former) employer is in the FEC database because I gave money to Clinton.

Trump’s ahistorical bullshit shines through again.

Of course, he’s like hey we could have avoided that war, all while he’s about to bumble his way into a potential nuclear war with North Korea.

I mean, who could possibly have seen that coming?

Trump doesn’t get the consequences of his actions, and that with a North Korean regime that feels cornered, it might start a nuclear conflict whether Trump wants it or not.

Any time some one asks me why the Civil War happened, or does the “wasn’t about slavery” dance, I simply point them to the original Articles of Secession from every Confederate state….they’re all online. Then point out “slavery” tends to be in paragraph 1 or 2 and throughout the documents.

Original sources, how do they work?

I also suggest they try picking up a book and reading American Nations as to why the Confederacy was backed into an economic corner. Agrarian economy based on basically free slave labor. Then they wrapped it all in a pretty flag and sent their men off to die.

I have Confederate soldiers buried in my family plot. I know why they fought. I can respect my ancestors without honoring their cause. Scots Irish out of Kentucky. They were going to fight SOMEONE.

Those were fake Articles of Secession!

It’s true, the Yankees got together with The Blacks and they made fake documents to make the Great People of The Confederacy look bad.

And it worked. Look how they are being treated yet today. Why they can’t even keep their statues to remind them of how cruel they were to a group of people. And they took away their flag that was nothing more than a symbol of their love for their land and their slaves.

Damn Yankees!

So thank Trump for reminding us about how it all really was. He has broken through all the fake news and instilled a new set of alt-facts that explain everything.

- - -

By the way, what schools did Trump go to? Are they denying that he studied hung-out there?

Can we impeach a President based on the degree of national and international embarrassment he is causing? Do it for the country.

That makes sense.

I’m going to defend Ms. Rachel. One of my favorite almost First Ladies.

Her first marriage was to a cruel and abusive man. She walked out and left him. Assumed he’d divorced her for abandonment. Then met Jackson.

Things get complex from there. New territories and states had different rules around marriage. Spider web.

She was apparently quiet, kind, intelligent, serene, and the total opposite of her husband. Who absolutely adored and respected her.

Once they realized their mistake they were officially wed. She died of a heart attack right before his Inauguration. He was inconsolable. Never remarried.

Jackson was an ass. But I like to think that had Rachel lived he’d have been slightly less of one.

Peter Selis: 5 Things To Know About Gunman Who Opened Fire At San Diego Pool Party

4. He was invited to the birthday party he opened fire at
When Peter walked up to the pool party, he was approached by the person who was celebrating their 50th birthday at the bash, according to a witness. “When he invited the suspect to join the celebration, the suspect lifted up his shirt, took out the gun and shot him in the stomach,” the witness tells NBC 7. “He continued shooting people until he was out of bullets.”

5. He threatened the party-goers verbally before shooting
“You can either leave or you can stay here and die,” Peter told a group of young women who were helping a wounded friend, according to witnesses. Another witness added, “He had his beer in one hand and his gun in the other.”

No wonder Trump loves him some Jackson:

John Quincy Adams’ presidential campaigns targeted Jackson’s “passion and lack of self-control” in both 1824 and 1828, “making it central to the argument that he would devastate the integrity of the Republic and its institutions.”

And of course, when his wife died:

Even though her maladies began as early as 1825, Jackson always blamed his political enemies for her death.

Well, there is always the site of the old Führerbunker in Berlin, but nowadays, an apartment complex sits on top of it, so you’d basically be taking a whiz in someone’s front yard.

I’ve been there; it’s right off Wilhelmstrasse. There’s a marker that denotes the site. Quite an experience to be standing at what was the focal point for the Allied armies in WWII.

Naaah, a real “Trump Compromise” to free the slaves would probably involve him working out THE YUUGEST! THE BEST!! deal to buy out the slave-owners for some sort of government paper, which he would then negotiate to sell off at a discount to a foreign bank*, taking a huge profit for himself, and leaving the slaveowners holding the paper, with the slaves still in place (as collateral). THE BIGGEST DEAL!!!

*probably the MuzhikskyBank of St. Petersburg

So far, all I’ve seen with Trump is he talks tough, then folds like rice paper when challenged. If he had been president during the Civil War, he would have told the CSA to get back in the union or else, then would have let them secede without so much as a whimper of protest.

And would have built a wall along the Mason-Dixon line to keep the escaping slaves from crossing over.

Zinke’s a moron. He claims that there were job losses as a result of designations of national monuments, except that there’s tangible proof that each time a national monument has been created within the continental US that there’s been job creation - an influx of tourism and related industries that helps spur the local economy in ways that mining/drilling never could.

Atoms don’t get around that much.

Atoms get around; it’s just that there are a lot of them. The numbers in Nyet’s post have a lot of zeros. Look at it this way to think in terms you can understand a little easier:

22.4 l gas /mole
5 x 10^18 liters of atmosphere alone
1 mole = 6.02 x 10^23 molecules.
10^50 atoms on earth
10^25 atoms in a human.

Ok, maybe not easier, but when dealing with exponents that large, the odds of them repeating are small.

Of course, Number Ten is pooh-poohing the reports, but it still looks like PM May is trying to soft-pedal the Brexit negatives before the election. And the Europeans, unsurprisingly, are still having none of it.

I have a whole raft of contradictory (and mainly sinking feelings) over the Brexit: there really don’t seem to be many positive outcomes: the notion that England (never mind “Britain”) can somehow - in the 21st Century - increase its economic (and, presumably political) influence and position as a more “independent” actor than as part of the EU is (and, IMO, always has been) a dubious proposition at best. This isn’t the Edwardian Era anymore…

I added an important word (in bold). I think the word needs to be used in all explanations of what Trump and his administration is doing. No matter what the subject or issue, you can always be sure they are lying. I think it must be on page one of the Trump Administration Cabinet Rules and Regulations.

Rule #1; The truth will get you in trouble. Never tell the truth because you will be held to it. Lie. Let the media and our enemies figure it out as we go about doing what we want to do. They hate us anyway. As far as our supporters, it will be too late to know they were lied to.

Quite true: except at least half the country (Scotland excepted) seem to have neither thought about said repercussions, nor, even worse, care particularly much. The whole Brexit movement (in my off-the-cuff and probably badly-flawed opinion) seems to have been based far less on logical analysis or even economic interests than on “nationalistic populism”: i.e. self-righteous xenophobia about “bloody foreigners” coupled with a fatal nostalgia for past “glories”.
And in the conflict between hard-headed realism and self-congratulatory flag-waving, the latter usually comes out ahead (again, except for Scotland: they seem to have their heads on straight)

Almost everything Republicans get wrong about the economy started with a cocktail napkin in 1974

Growth, argued Laffer, depends on how much people work and how much businesses invest. He believed both those things hinge on tax rates: the more income the government takes away in taxes, the less motivated people are to work and save (leaving businesses less money to invest).

Looks like he wrote on an actual cloth napkin.

I really can’t believe Trump doesn’t know the cause of the Civil War. I mean, I get that he’s an idiot of such a high order of magnitude that the human mind can’t fathom a number that big(ly)… but jesusjosephmarymosesmohammedvishnuandbuddha… how the fuck does someone who grew up in the United States of American not know the cause of the Civil War?

The funny(?) thing is that he probably has pissed off the unReconstructed Confederates by dismissing the “sacred rights” (slavery) their ancestors seceded over.

Although tbf, for Dems to bitch about internal optics is something the media loves to play on because actually documenting what the GOP says is just so fucking out there that the media can’t believe (The GOP) that they’re saying what they’re actually saying. There’s such a disconnect from basic science, truth, facts that its as if they’re speaking a completely different semantic language.

I’d be good with any of the first three. Franken turns 66 in a couple weeks, that means he’d be 69 when taking the oath of office and I’m not sure a new president entering their 70s is the way to go. If Warren’s problem is criticizing Obama, then that surely disqualifies Booker:

Booker generated controversy on May 12, 2012, when he appeared on Meet The Press as a surrogate for the reelection campaign of Barack Obama and made remarks that were critical of that campaign.[139] Booker said that the attacks on Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital were “nauseating to me on both sides. It’s nauseating to the American public. Enough is enough. Stop attacking private equity. Stop attacking Jeremiah Wright.”[139] The comments were subsequently used by the Romney campaign against Obama.[140]

CNN has been doing this more and more lately - exaggerated clickbait headlines intended to appeal to right wingers that don’t accurately reflect what the article says. This is the actual quote:

“I think President Obama, like many others in both parties, talks about a set of big national statistics that look shiny and great but increasingly have giant blind spots. That GDP, unemployment, no longer reflect the lived experiences of most Americans. And the lived experiences of most Americans (are) that they are being left behind in this economy,” Warren said. “Worse than being left behind, they’re being kicked in the teeth.”

Yup. They never put two and two together: where does all that stuff at Wal-mart come from, and what would happen if it were made in the USA?

interestingly enough, in the short term, life would be very, very bad, but in the long term, American workers would have to be hired to make that stuff, and the labor market is tight enough that wages would have to go up. Then, of course, there’d be massive inflation. So we’re screwed either way, but would your rather be screwed short term, screwed long term, or both?
