DOE Rick Perry at coal plant:”Here’s a little economics lesson: supply and demand. You put the supply out there and the demand will follow.”

You folks need to stop mocking poor Rick. After all, he has the perfect evidence: the Republicans offered their party members a huge supply of idiots and damned if they didn’t elect them. So there!

No, he went to Texas A&M.

He was not just an Aggie, he was a major Aggie kingpin, specifically a “Redpot.” These are the anointed leaders and managers of the annual Aggie bonfire ritual (which has killed 17 people over the years.) The top Redpot, first among equals, is known as “Head Stack,” and there are other specialized tasks within the Red Pot hierarchy, such as “Truck Pot,” who is in charge of the vehicles that bring wood to the site.

Just more proof that supply siders don’t even know how their own BS theory works.

It’s not Field of Dreams, supply it and they will buy it (at a profitable price). It’s based on the idea that there are all these positive ROI projects and innovations that rich people could fund, if only the government wasn’t stealing their money an using it to move water from one side of swimming pools to the other.

Never mind, actual Supply Side theory is even stupider than Perry’s version.

I’m getting real tired of US RWNJs. Their goal is a society in which a few plutocrats own everything and have reduced everyone else to abject wage-slavery. In this GOP utopia poor whites would have a license to kill blacks and other supposed undesirables at will for entertainment.

Paul Ryan et al. would view this as quite the improvement over the old Roman bread and circuses model, since here the patricians don’t have to pay for either the bread or the circuses.

So basically someone is releasing fake NSA documents to get the media to do stories on them and they can then say the story is fake and the media runs with fake news.

Rachel got one and thinks it was faked by using the NSA document that was put out on the ‘net by The Intercept.

Gee, who would do that?

And isn’t it strange that The Intercept is the one that put out a document that could be used as a template.

Say, doesn’t some guy that lives in Brazil, calls himself a reporter, make a big deal about the news media going on about the Russian story without any facts?

Slate has a good article Open and Shut: The obstruction of justice case against Trump is already a slam dunk by Duke law professor and Enron prosecutor Samuel W. Buell. It includes the following point, which I think needs emphasizing:

Some have argued that, elements of the crime aside, the president simply cannot be prosecuted for exercising his power to direct federal law enforcement priorities no matter how malevolent his intentions. This argument disturbingly equates the power to do something with the legality of exercising that power.

The Supreme Court has already acknowledged the inescapable logic that the president’s authority over federal law enforcement does not include the freedom to prevent investigation and prosecution of himself and his close aides, as presidential powers expert Richard Pildes has explained. The opposing line of argument would excuse a parade of horribles including, hypothetically, a president who ordered his FBI director to mire an election opponent in a costly and distracting investigation for political reasons, or a president who ordered the halt to a murder investigation that might implicate a staff member.

Given Trump’s affinity towards Putin, whose opponents frequently meet with untimely ends in unsolved murders, this last hypothetical is particularly troubling.

This happened to my grandparents, too. But not a nice a story: my grandfather was a stern southerner and member of the Primitive Baptist church. He badgered his wife (a Methodist)—my grandmother—as a patriarch would. She died too young—74. He traveled alone to my high school graduation a few months later, something he never would have done before, in the north. He was a changed man. Not the man in charge, not full of piss and vinegar, he was gentle and sorrowful. He died a few months after that, and I believe he was depressed and remorseful after recognizing how he had taken his wife for granted for over 50 years. Of course, he was 82, so it could have just been age.

Interesting village board meeting tonight.

An elderly woman who now lives in Denver but grew up here in the Forties in a desperately poor family came up to pitch a presentation to the village board.

She is now very wealthy, and wants to make a restricted donation of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to the village for a memorial on behalf of her parents. The memorial would not be a monument, but a public facility that could be used by all.

She originally thought a swimming pool, but decided that wouldn’t be very useful since there are so few people in the town. She then thought of tearing down the old school building and constructing a park (and rehabilitating the outside basketball court) but decided a park would require too much maintenance considering we already have a park.

In the end she decided she would tackle a problem that has vexed the village for years: She will pay to rehabilitate our park bathrooms and upgrade them to ADA standards (they have been closed ever since I moved here). She also enquired from a mason and sculptor in Torrington, Wyo. about brick sculptures he did for that city and a signmaker from Scottsbluff on erecting welcome signs outside the village. She also even consulted the state to get the information required (since the road through town is part of the Oregon Trail National Monument).

Her only concern is the village use the money in the way she intends (we would be stupid to not do that because [a] no one would ever leave a donation to the village again and [b] village board goes to jail with fresh air on alternate Wednesdays).

She is going to have her lawyer and accountant call our chairwoman and village attorney to set this all up.

That and she hauled up here two hundred miles for our board meeting tonight. If she hated this place she’d be doing this project in Denver.

I’m a white male that grew up (in my early years) at the very end of Jim Crow, and had I seen that sort of thing I would have let him have it.
