Speaking of music, went to a music festival yesterday - quite good, especially considering that it’s in a small town about 50 kms from where I live.
The headline act was Skinny Lister, from the UK. They’re similar to - and have toured with - Dropkick Murphy’s and Flogging Molly. Great live performers too.

You’ve heard conspiracy theories in the past: Big (something) doesn’t want you to know (because Rothschilds, government conspiracies, the Illuminati, pick something) about the truth on (climate change, the Sandy Hook Massacre, September 11 Attacks, the fake country of Finland, the flat Earth, &c).
Someone over at Daily Kos created a spoof of a conspiracy theory: Big Astronomy is faking a so-called Solar Eclipse on August 21.
Yes, THEY are trying to put one over on you. (Watch for someone to pick up on this and believe it)
For the record, I am a “sheeple” who believes the scientific establishment claims of a total eclipse occurring in my village on August 21. As such, we went to Big Internet to purchase #14 welding goggles to view the so-called total eclipse (and to protect our camera’s light sensor).
On a serious note, one should never look at the sun directly nor point a camera with a light sensor at it without protection (aside from the brilliance, the UV light can damage both eyesight and the light sensor). It is okay to look at the sun directly during totality, but not during the partial eclipse portion.
——- ——- ——-
“Many people have only listened to one side of the eclipse debate—the pro-eclipse establishment. They will tell you, as if it’s a proven fact, that there will be an eclipse of the sun on August 21.
But have they given the other side a fair hearing?
They prefer the term “eclipse skeptics,” rather than “eclipse deniers.” They simply haven’t been convinced by the so-called “experts,” whose careers depend on repeating the politically correct line that there is “100% certainty” about a coming eclipse.
The fact is, there actually isn’t a “consensus,” as some claim, that the moon will over-shadow the sun, and it is total arrogance to claim that this “eclipse of the sun” … . (as they’re calling it now — I can remember a time when they were talking about the eclipse of the MOON, the shadow of the earth supposedly blocking out the light of the moon — Why isn’t anyone talking about THAT anymore?) … anyway it’s arrogance to claim that fallible scientists on earth can accurately tell you, with certainty, where the moon will be later in August. Scientists have been wrong before. We need more study. And who’s funding these so-called experts?
When it comes down to it, there’s nothing we can do about the eclipse anyway.
(It’s all a perfectly natural phenomenon, by the way. It’s happened before. You just beat on the drums and it goes away.)”

People such as Cernovich see their fantasies of a “white America” slipping away, and just when it seemed to them that it was in their grasp.
Of course, it’s just a fantasy and a delusional one at that. But don’t discount the power of angry, frustrated and disillusioned people. I’m getting the sneaking suspicion that there may well be sporadic violence from RW domestic terrorists in the not-too-distant future. They believe (wrongly, of course) that they’re under siege and it’s almost inevitable that some of them may choose to lash out violently.

We have a fairly reliable test in these parts.
I think we will see more than an uptick in RWNJ violence. The scale will be re-calibrated when one of these armed “open carry” demonstrations results in a massacre, probably of Muslims but possibly of a different target group, with immigrants at especially high risk. These events are carefully stage managed but you can’t have hundreds of armed idiots milling around with deadly weapons and not have a mass shootout sooner or later. The dynamics would be reminiscent of an old time lynching, with authorities loathe to use force against white rioters who cannot be stopped any other way.

On the issue of unregistered voters, you can usually find that out from Secretary of State offices or news reports.
For example, a high percentage of people in my state (Nebraska) are registered to vote.
69% of the registered voters turned out in 2012, 70% in 2008. (Total registered voters in 2016 were 1,211,101. About 200,000 more people are registered as Republicans than Democrats in this state.)
censusviewer.com (statistics of population, statewide and by county, 2016).
There are about 1,360,000 adults 18+ in Nebraska.
There are only two cities in the state with more than 60,000 people (Omaha and Lincoln). Most of the state’s population is rural. For 2016, the turnout was about the same as 2012.
As you can see from our state statistics, nearly everyone who is an adult is already registered. While you could leverage the small percentage who are not registered and the small percentage who voted third party/did not vote, the only way to flip this state is to turn the 60-40 R advantage around.
That means crafting messages and platforms that will appeal to Republicans who feel their party does not speak to them (and running candidates in this state for a change).
I’ll spare you the photo of the delicious lamb shank I’m eating. 😉

Well, [POSTING DISCLAIMERS HERE] - I know little enough about Arizona politics to make an educated guess, but I have been under the impression that even if AZ isn’t quite the deep-red bastion of GOP wingnuttery it’s usually reputed to be, it’s still a hard row for Democrats to hoe. They haven’t, IIRC, had a Dem Governor, Senator or Lege for many years: and unless Flake runs up against a really strong primary challenger (likely to be a rabid Trumperrhoid) or a really attractive Democrat (dunno: do they have any in AZ?), I wouldn’t think he be that easy a “flip”.
Thought the possibility of a second Senate seat on the ballot next November (depending on McCain) makes things interesting.

Nearly all the world’s fake products come from China. America’s oldest private detective agency is on the case.
Some corporations that manufacture in China — Disney, Target, Coca-Cola, Apple, Mattel — rely primarily on in-house brand-protection agents to seize fake goods, investigate counterfeit manufacturers, and take legal action. And as evidenced in various news reports, a slew of other Fortune 1000 companies — reportedly including Dell, Intel, Microsoft, Procter & Gamble, and Ford — hire Pinkerton, America’s oldest detective agency, to deploy agents like Azim Uribe.
…
I told Kevin his watches reminded me of something I’d seen on television a few weeks earlier. Charlie Sheen was on a talk show, recounting the time Donald Trump gave him a pair of diamond-encrusted platinum cuff links that he claimed were from Harry Winston. An appraiser later told Sheen they were nothing more than “cheap pewter and bad zirconia.” No one was surprised by the story, least of all Kevin.

But is PharmaBro getting send to Club Fed? Or federal “Pound-me-in-the-ass” prison? Because I’m sure he doesn’t fear much in the first, besides not getting to shit tweet all day.

Fair to say he’s likely confident he’d be going to a Club Fed, minimum security institution.

That was my thought as well. He’s a white collar criminal, he has little to fear behind bars. Now send him to supermax and we’ll see how smug he looks after his sentence is over.

I was thinking of one of the Federal Prison Camps, which are pretty much low-security facilities and have dormitory-style housing. I’d think not atypical for a non-violent, white-collar offender.

WHY THE SCARIEST NUCLEAR THREAT MAY BE COMING FROM INSIDE THE WHITE HOUSE
Donald Trump’s secretary of energy, Rick Perry, once campaigned to abolish the $30 billion agency that he now runs, which oversees everything from our nuclear arsenal to the electrical grid. The department’s budget is now on the chopping block. But does anyone in the White House really understand what the Department of Energy actually does? And what a horrible risk it would be to ignore its extraordinary, life-or-death responsibilities?

How to stop a virus, how to take a census, how to determine if some foreign country is seeking to obtain a nuclear weapon or if North Korean missiles can reach Kansas City: these are enduring technical problems. The people appointed by a newly elected president to solve these problems have roughly 75 days to learn from their predecessors. After the inauguration, a lot of deeply knowledgeable people will scatter to the four winds and be forbidden, by federal law, from initiating any contact with their replacements. The period between the election and the inauguration has the feel of an A.P. chemistry class to which half the students have turned up late and are forced to scramble to grab the notes taken by the other half, before the final. “It’s a source of a lot of the dysfunction in government,” says Max Stier, who runs the nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service, which, over the past decade, has become perhaps the world’s expert on U.S. presidential transitions. “The wheel comes off the bus at the start of the trip and you never get anywhere.”

He just said the Democrats problems are their progressives are intolerant for any other ideas.
That’s a claim that is really being pushed hard by the wingnut faux intelligentsia.
Unfortunately they’ve found some allies in the more hot-button-pushing non-wingnut activists who don’t seem to care about social civility.
As for French - he’s always struck me as a wanna-be. He’s also a step down in writing ability from the days of Buckley.
re: #121 Birth Control Works
slow day
Not exactly slow, just surprisingly busy.
First I hit the farmers’ market, with a quick stop at the neighborhood market, then I tidied up a few things. My brother came by to return our Forester and retrieve his car (needed the higher clearance vehicle for a trip) so we did that and chatted a bit. In about an hour I need to make a salad for my weaving guild board’s annual changeover-of-the-board-members potluck. Then I will go to the aforementioned potluck. Since I’m retaining my minor position on the board I won’t exactly be bonding with my replacement, but it’s always a fun event.
I hate to drop by, post a couple times and then disappear, but it’s often the way my life is…

Going to finish The Leftovers today.
I see we’re now getting a flood of media stories about Gen. Kelly “reining in” the Trump White House. LOL. Let’s see how long this lasts.

President Trump got 68.63% in West Virginia, 4.8% in Washingtoin DC. Guess where Mueller has a grand jury? Guess how biased it will be?

Whos the hell is this David French guy from National Review???
He just said the Democrats problems are their progressives are intolerant for any other ideas.
Whut? I know there are far left progressives that can be very intolerant of any idea not of their own…but I do have a feeling the Republican party has been built on intolerance since the Reagan years. And Trump walked all over the Republicans with that intolerance the Republicans created.
If your definition of progressive is the BernieBro never Hillary wing of the party, that is certainly true. They were a major reason that she lost, they are the ones attacking Tom Perez, and they are going to continue to damage the party. They are as deluded as the Trump supporters.

So Newt’s argument is…what? That we scrap centuries of jurisprudence and base grand juries (and the subsequent trials) wherever a defendant has the best odds of landing a favorable jury?
re: #138 PhillyPretzel
Biased? Is that what Newt is calling it? Oy.
That talking point came out about 2 hours after the grand jury was impaneled. They’re setting up to invalidate the indictments as partisan hackery.

Which is not far removed from their frequent whine that a white cop can’t expect a “fair” trial unless tried in a lily-white suburb far removed from the city where he shot a black man.
I think Newt needs to call a plumber. He’s plugged up again and needs a flush.

The term was first used in 1984.[1] There are several dozen large Korean family-controlled corporate groups which fall under this definition

You know, this shit might have been easier to take if Bernie hadn’t gotten his hand slapped on a monthly basis by the FEC for fraudulent and illegal campaign contributions. It’s a bit hard to claim you’re “clean” of corporate influence when there’s millions in your campaign coffers that come from “voters” that either don’t exist or donated thousands of dollars more than the legal limit to your candidacy.
