Trump was just a collective middle finger raised at Washington by disgusted and disillusioned voters. They did not know nor do they really care how poorly he is working out as a President.

You do know your party and ideology controls most state legislatures and Congress and the Presidency, right dumbass? Oh by the way you ain’t for limited government and freedom. Your beliefs about Muslim-Americans are proof of that. Oh and PS, pay your fucking child support, you fucking asshole.

Sen. Lindsey Graham warned President Donald Trump on Friday that pulling troops out of Afghanistan could lay the groundwork for another 9/11.

Trump is traveling to Camp David on Friday with his chief national security aides to discuss the path forward for the 16-year-old U.S. war there.

The South Carolina Republican urged Trump in a statement to “listen to his generals” — an apparent request for the president to prioritize the views of military commanders over those of his just-dismissed chief strategist Steve Bannon, who reportedly wants to replace U.S. troops in Afghanistan with private contractors.

Even leaving aside the general imbecility of the idea (which is only to be expected coming from the Trump White House, regardless of the source), who would be expected to pay for these mercenaries “private contractors”? I have a feeling I know the answer: i.e. we can all go see the contributors in our mirrors.

I saw this private-contractors idea described somewhere as the “East India Company Option”, i.e. a “private enterprise” hiring locals (controlled and officered by the Company’s nationals ) to deal with local “security” issues. Of course, the fools pushing this idea seem to forget that 1) The EIC had income from control of a large majority of India’s trade to pay for their own army; 2) Even then, by 1857, the Company’s control fell right apart, and had it had to be rescued by the British Army/Government; (Indian Mutiny) 3) Afghanistan isn’t India - never has been, and has always been a worse case.

I still subscribe to the idea that Trump was simply a mistake for a decent proportion of voters. The polls were so in Clinton’s favour it allowed 3 groups to vote/not vote thinking he wasn’t going to win.

The Bernie-curious could sit it out or register a protest vote for him, telling themselves they were voting their conscience. Not the hardcore BOBs.

The soft right who really didn’t want Trump but we’re torn about voting dem.

The Hillary haters who were never going to vote for a Clinton.

The predicted result, which in fact was the real result in terms of popular vote, meant a lot of his support weren’t keen on him but felt there vote didn’t count. The EC simply amplified it. For me, this is why his support has dropped of so rapidly to low 30s. They didn’t want him in the first place.

It’s also why I think the GOP did so well overall. A lot of their votes were meant as checks on any dem president. Explains why governing has been so hard for them. They never expected to be in this position

The mere presence of police can escalate a situation, and there are some more radical assholes among the counter-protesters, so the police left after they weren’t needed.

If Trump has a presidential library, I suspect he would put it on one of his properties so he could charge a membership fee.

I’ve only been to two presidential libraries (Herbert Hoover and Bill Clinton), both of which waive the very modest fee for veterans and their families. I can’t imagine Trump waiving fees for anything.

re: #71 Jay C

Actually, I agree with most of what you say: except for that last sentence. I think once it became clear that - even of she won - Hillary Clinton wasn’t, after all, going to create a “blue wave”, the Republicans realized they were still going to retain control of Congress, and found they had something of a win-win situation. Clinton wins: they just revert to their position of Pavlovian obstructionism (with extra Benghazi Boogaloo) and nothing gets done (which they leverage for gains in 2018). Trump wins: Jackpot! They thought they’d have a pliant President who would spend his time tweeting inanities from Mar-a-Lago, playing golf, and a few odd minutes happily signing off on the whole GOP agenda. Little did they realize…..

I do think the last 8 years showed that what they do when having 2/3 of the power isn’t govern.

Look at healthcare. It is blindingly obvious they didn’t have the slightest clue what to do with it. They needed 2 votes and a signature. Shines a light on the idea they want repeal. What they want is the illusion of governance. All the rights, none of the responsibility. Winning it all was the last thing they wanted. When they did win all of the wish list stuff was shiny and bright. However their ideas along with Trump are proving toxic.

In fact Trump being so hideous has served to disguise their ideas as it even gives them a scapegoat. Someday we’ll hear how they definitely could have repealed O’care if it wasn’t for that dratted manchild

But then you know history. Dudebros don’t.

Capitalism is not inherently racist.

But it inevitably empowers the already powerful and disadvantages the disadvantaged. So, in a significantly racist society, it will exacerbate racism.

That having been said, Capitalism is just an economic system, not a way of life. It’s a tool, and like all tools must be used carefully, skillfully, and with knowledge of how it works and what its dangers and limitations are. It can be properly regulated to be overall a benefit.

But that’s the key - regulated.

My usual saying is that both From-Each/To-Each Socialism, and unregulated Capitalism both begin to fail as soon as someone figures out how to cheat.

For the former, it’s when someone realizes that there’s no downside to not working hard. For the latter it’s when someone realizes he can take advantage of other people.

That means before summer is over these groups will be fighting over mission, direction, how far or not to go, etc. They will be looking for purity in their own ranks and they will peter out as they all begin to hate each other too.

Interesting that it took The Yam an hour and 20 minutes to tweet the “conciliatory” message after the first (“police”) one.

I wonder who (if anybody) is monitoring the responses to Trump’s Twitter Twattery?
You think he’s trolling for clicks, like checking instant ratings data on an Apprentice episode?? And then putting out something he thinks (or his peeps tell him) will “rate” better?

Capitalists all love them some Adam Smith & his Invisible Hand Jive, but they forget another important quote of his: “Markets are there to serve people; people are not there to serve markets.”

He certainly foresaw a role for government in regulating markets to ensure that they serve both consumers and producers, both employers and employees.

re: #277 The Ghost of a Flea

The development of modern art at the beginning of the 20th century - but with roots going back to the 1860s - denoted a revolutionary divergence from traditional artistic values to ones based on the personal perceptions and feelings of the artists. This rejection of traditional authority - intimately linked to the Industrial Revolution and the advance of democracy as the preferred form of government - was exhilarating to some, but extremely threatening to others, as it took away the security they felt under the old order, and the very cohesiveness of Western culture and civilization appeared to be in peril.

The funny thing is even as Hillary won big here. My Dad’s wingnut friend still gave my Dad the usual crap about how Dem voters are a bunch of welfare bums and Republican voters are teh producers. We’re one of the wealthiest counties in the nation. At the risk of sounding like a snob, Republican voters are in total denial about their socio-economic status.

Which makes the coastal elite label all the more silly. Of course, when they’re talking about “coastal elites”, they’re talking about states and regions that have a large number of “those people.”

Every week feels like a month.

Ya know…this cluster is such an interesting twist to Obama’s legacy and we still have no idea what comes of this current GOP Admin and era but it’s certainly a dramatic departure from what may have happened under an establishment Republican. So much policy wise would be the same (they’d probably be more successful at implementing it with another R-POTUS tho), but we’re dealing with a very real autocratic threat likely with foreign aid that fed off racial resentment immediately following the pretty successful Presidency of the first non-white person.

Hey @mattand I was trying to DM on twitter but I guess that’s blocked. You can DM me on Twitter about any questions pertaining to amplification of nickel steel strings through copper wound poles into a powered speaker. There are unlimited colors.
You can also try looking for “open box” deals which have the same warranty and less cost. I was running out the door, and Fender SS amps never let me down. Simple, cheap, and works.
At your convenience.

There will be a lot of “deputies weren’t afraid to shove a few heads into car tops under Sheriff Joe!” comments. BTW, I didn’t know that about the Democratic mayor of Phoenix. Gross. //

I saw the CBS evening news. Did you know that there were 40,000 protesters in Boston, and that some of them threw urine, and that one of them was arrested for having a gun? That was the entire details they gave.

This is pretty good: Donald Trump and the Sad Triumph of Right-Wing Political Correctness

Back at the 2015 event at which Donald Trump announced his bid for the presidency, his daughter Ivanka introduced her father as, first and foremost, an implacable foe of political correctness. “My father is the opposite of politically correct. He says what he means and he means what he says,” she said, shortly before Trump characterized Mexican immigrants as disease-ridden, drug-smuggling rapists (“Some, I assume, are good people,” he granted). In the first Republican primary debate, held in August of 2015, Trump himself reiterated that being anti-P.C. would be the hallmark of his political life, declaring, “I don’t frankly have time for total political correctness.”

It’s ironic, then, that perhaps Trump’s greatest accomplishment so far as president is to make it OK—or maybe even mandatory—for his followers to engage in the worst excesses of political correctness, especially its attempts to shut down debate and heterodox opinions through bullying, appeals to ad hominem attacks, and unthinking “whataboutism.”

Among the Trump faithful, there are never legitimate grounds upon which to disagree with anything the billionaire says or does. If Barack Obama’s most strident defenders were sometimes quick to claim any criticism of him was racist, thereby delegitimating honest disagreement, Trump’s supporters are equally quick to denounce any dissent as proof positive of secret membership in Antifa, a pro-Hillary voting record, or a desperate attempt to look good among the communists who run the much-discussed-yet-little-seen Washington, D.C. cocktail party circuit.
