Any time conservatives get in political trouble, they rabble rouse for war. All my life, always the same.
Considering how much trouble Trump is in, we’ll be at war with forty countries at this rate.
Also, here we go from “Get the hell out of there” to “I didn’t really mean it”.

Alarming superficiality. The President is a public figure, but it’s not his job to be a public figure.

What little bit of a diplomatic community we have.
“Our troops fight to win?” Well, they try. You need a strategy and a goal first.
When we went into Afghanistan, it was to oust the Taliban from the government and find bin Laden. Those goals were achieved.
So what’s the goal now?

Threatened war with nuclear-armed Pakistan, wants to force them to negotiate by pandering to India’s nationalists, going to make Afghanistan pay for our “help,” says there will be no nation building, threatened NATO if they didn’t “pay up” or help us, insists the international community is behind this.
In other words he has absolutely no idea what he’s doing. I would make a better president simply because I would listen to my advisers, the military, Congress, the intelligence community (that is, all the people he’s pissed off).

A total fantasy on Trump’s part.
re: #167 calochortus
Yeah, but my point is that it doesn’t matter if it’s feasible, it matters if the assumption of “paying” for the conflict incorporates this kind of neo-colonial concept, because that’s going to make the conflict even more fucked-up.
The direct point of comparison here is the Bremer Plan, which also was a total fantasy…but they still tried for it.
Inspired by the Women’s March, a group of 6 women in Brunswick, Ga. banded together and decided to fight for the issues which have been under attack by the current administration. That small group of women, has now become 300 strong and grows daily. We are finding our voice in our sisterhood, and as our voice gets louder, I hope we can give a new meaning to the words “the south will rise again” where it will be followed by…”AND IT WILL BE WITH MY SISTERS AND ME STANDING ARM AND ARM AGAINST HATE, RACISM AND BIGOTRY.”
I know we will not use that phrase, but now, when I think of it or hear it, I think those words are just the beginning of a different sentence. One where my sisters are joined together to find solutions to the problems we face. Where we are growing stronger every week. Where we are Determined. Where we “Persist”, we “Resist” and we “Reclaim our Time” to move forward not backwards.
Read the rest. Worth it.

Thanks. Just what I expected. We don’t generally watch TV during dinner and certainly not a Trump speech. We eat, we talk, sometimes we just sit quietly with each other. No need to ruin our digestion with Trump.

At least Obama had a long term ground event based goal set to get us out. The enemy held the upper hand long term given a careful approach. And a place to run, hide Osama himself and endless militants/enablers, rearm and re-fund in at will.
Now it’s more of a quagmire than ever.

I’m hoping there are enough people around who can remember back a whole decade or so, so they won’t want to try it again.
I’m watching Lawrence O’Donnell and two guests discuss how a part of the beginning of Trump’s speech was an attempt at a do-over after he had expressed support for Nazis, KKK members, and other white supremacists. If this was Trump’s attempt at a walk-back, he could have saved his breath. I consider some things hard to move past, and a president’s open support for some of our citizens who want to kill others of us due to no fault of our own is one of those things. He had no idea that when he uttered those words of support for the evilest among us last Tuesday that it would constitute a damaging blow to his presidency. I didn’t like him before he showed his support for the aforementioned persons, and the only reason I won’t say I hate his guts is that my parents taught me to never say I hate another human being. He was on my sh*t list before last Tuesday, and he will always be on it.

Another aspect of Trump getting to where he is—this whole phenomenon of it being enough to “seem” like something, as though everything was a performance trying to get good ratings. Critiquing style without reference to the content.
Trump may be reality TV’s avatar, but there’s larger shallowness that forms his ecosystem.

Syria? The only change in Syria is we’re bombing with even less discernment. I’m holding to my stance that what’s coming is more leeway to cause harm, and a broader definition of “combatant.”
I fucking hate these people. They love the idea of war because of the tropes about WW2 they’ve ingested…and over and over again they don’t actually plan, or value their troops, or think about civilians in-country are variable when you’re occupying their land, or think about what the end-point is.
And when all the above fails—inevitably—it’s always someone else that fucked up. Snowball did it.
