Just remarking to my sister that with it getting darker here as the eclipse reaches the East Coast, you’d swear that a thunderstorm were rolling in.

10
Blind Frog Belly White  Aug 21, 2017 • 11:35:24am

It was cloudy at home, with the sun breaking through periodically. First glimpse of the eclipse was actually on a pillow in the bedroom, pinholed through leaves. Called Mrs. FBW, and of course it went away. Then came back. I think she finally got a pic.

Then we went to the dining room, and I picked up my binos. “DON’T LOOK AT THE SUN!!” she shouted. Of course, I was just using them to project onto a piece of paper….

On the drive to work, the clouds were very heavy most of the way, but amazingly for South City, it was clear when I got there. My whole group was outside, with Eclipse Glasses, pinhole cameras, and binos-in-a-box. I looked at the ground by my car…..

Buncha tiny eclipses.

While we were standing around, a family drove up in a camper and parked near my car. They got out and stood there, swapping their eclipse glasses around. Then I noticed one of them was a ~10-12 year old boy, who was having his Dad take pics of him with the Challenger.

I wonder what he’ll remember more, the solar eclipse? Or my car?

Basically, they’re paying for security for all of Trump’s trips to his golf resorts in FL, NY, NJ, and VA. Plus his official trip overseas and around the US (campaign rallies since being POTUS).

On top of that they’ve got to provide coverage to his spawn on all of their trips, including overseas to promote their businesses so that Trump can suck even more from taxpayer funds by charging the USSS for rooms at his resorts/hotels around the country/world (Emoluments).

So, when Junior or Eric goes to the ME to do another deal, they have to pick up the security costs.

All those fuckers who were busy complaining about Obama’s travel costs are silent now, especially when it’s a white guy in the WH spending taxpayer funds like there’s no tomorrow (probably because he knows there isn’t going to be one). Trump’s travels are already screwing the very agency sworn to protect him and his family - screwing the people who are trained to take a bullet for him.

The USSS should tell the rest of his kids that overseas trips are limited now that there’s this thing known as the Internet and you can conduct business by webex.

After Charlottesville, American Jews worry about white nationalism

“Frankly one reason we don’t have that in America, is that as far as I can tell American Muslims are not anti-Semites,” he added.

Indeed Benjamin Sax, 42, a scholar at the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies in Maryland, said his group has found that Jews, with their refugee experiences, and Muslims, currently fighting Trump’s ban on refugees and Muslims, have been coming together since the election to build bridges around opposition to the president. Rather than fueling anti-Semitism, he sees Muslims in America making common cause with Jews.

“One silver lining is that my organization has responded to numerous requests, mostly by Jewish and Muslim women, looking to connect, so that’s actually been a pretty amazing community. And allies who wouldn’t normally align are finding their ways to our organization.”

It was a media fad with no real scientific backing, at a time when it was difficult to call out media for bullshit stories. The internet changed that. One thing that put rags like Omni out of business was the ability of the internet to instantly eviscerate their more outrageous stories.
I have always thought that the perpetrators of the 2004 Bush-Guard memo hoax were media savvy people who had just fallen behind a little and did not realize the significance of the internet. They probably figured the hoax would eventually be exposed or at least widely questioned, but only well after the election. Instead it was a matter of minutes.

Ah, good old Omni; I remember that magazine. We have something similar here - it’s called Epoch and it’s about 5% actual fact, 45% conspiracy theories and the remaining 50% is woowoo so laughable that even Erich von Däniken would find it hard to believe.

re: #93 Dr Lizardo

I actually remember that “new Ice Age” from the 1970’s - it was often mentioned in magazines, both serious and of the woowoo variety so ubiquitous in that era. However, it was always noted that it was simply a hypothesis, nothing more. Even the woowoo mags noted that, usually somewhere toward of the article.

Larry Niven, Jerry Poutnelle, and Michael Flynn wrote a SciFi novel, Fallen Angels

Fallen Angels (1991) is a science fiction novel by American science fiction authors Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Michael Flynn published by Jim Baen. The winner of 1992 Prometheus Award, the novel was written as a tribute to science fiction fandom, and includes many of its well-known figures, legends, and practices. It also champions modern technology and heaps scorn upon its critics - budget cutting politicians, fringe environmentalists and the forces of ignorance. An ebook of this text was among the first released by the Baen Free Library.

Set in an unspecified ‘near-future’ (one of the main characters has childhood memories of the Exxon Valdez disaster) in which a radical left-wing environmentalist movement has joined forces with the religious right through a shared distaste for modern technology. The resulting bipartisan conspiracy has gained control of the US government and imposed draconian luddite laws which, in attempts to curb global warming, have ironically brought about the greatest environmental catastrophe in recorded history - an ice age which may eventually escalate into a Snowball Earth.

Next one crossing the USA will be April 8, 2024. That one will go from Texas through Buffalo NY. Odds are that it’ll be snowing in Buffalo at that time. They also say that the 2024 eclipse will be roughly 6 minutes in length due to the sweep across the sky, which means more and better viewing for those in the path.

The big difference is that it is very difficult to look directly at the sun when it’s not eclipsed. Your eyes want to close. When you approach totality, you can look right at it, but it will still damage your retinas.

Yes, except during the short interval of totality. Not so harmful then. But typically, uninformed people would continue looking while the sun is slowly uncovered, and within seconds they’d have crescent-shaped burns on their retinas. Permanently.

One of my fondest memories of the ‘79 eclipse is that we stayed with my cousin’s family in Billings, so naturally we took her and her kids up to see the eclipse. This was so much easier to cope with in the 1930’s. Large format film, undeveloped was and is an excellent filter that’s safe. And cheap even at 8” x 10”.

Isn’t undeveloped film opaque? Kodak XAR sure is. I’d imagine overexposed, developed film might work, though I also remember being told that the old trick of looking through negatives was still dangerous.

Speaking of dragons, I like what they did with the Defenders. But I’m a mark for most all of the comic book stuff.

Heck, I enjoyed Iron Fist more during The Defenders than during his first season.

Although he was reduced to a MacGuffin, he displayed the most character growth of all, with the exception of Daredevil.

Last time Mr. w went to our optometrist, she tried out her new photo-of-the-back-of-the-eye camera on him. One spot they discussed as possibly being from his time on a ship in Pacific the 1960s when he and all the other sailors watched a nuclear explosion. I think they decided probably not.

I will be in/very near total eclipse for that one if I am still here in NW PA.

This the the only thing that would actually make me believe in a god: a moon, created from a collision with proto-earth, is large enough, and at the correct distance, to block out the rightaount of sun so that you can see something you would not otherwise be able to see, the corona.

Well, most of the time, anyway. From the notes concerning the April 8, 2024 eclipse, there’s this:

While the next total solar eclipse in the U.S. will not occur until 2024, it will be preceded by an annular solar eclipse just a few months prior.

During an annular solar eclipse, the moon is farther away from the Earth, so it is not quite large enough to block out all of the light from the sun. Because of this, this type of eclipse has been given the nickname of the ‘Ring of Fire’ eclipse.

This Ring of Fire eclipse will occur on Oct. 14, 2023, and will be visible from California to Texas and across portions of Central America and South America.

Fantastic!!

Wish I could have got more than the totality, but the filters I made up for the camera just didn’t cut the mustard and washed out the CCD when pointed at the sun. The Mate had better luck with the camera on her pad. When she gets a chance to download them I will post the best ones here.

I wish I had a better camera. I used to own a film Canon AE1 with the appropriate filters and such, but it is now at the bottom of the Adriatic Sea near Trieste, Italy. (Short story, dumb accident on my part.)

Despite Disavowals, Leading Tech Companies Help Extremist Sites Monetize Hate

But its designation as a hate site hasn’t stopped tech companies — including PayPal, Amazon and Newsmax — from maintaining partnerships with Jihad Watch that help to sustain it financially. PayPal facilitates donations to the site. Newsmax — the online news network run by President Donald Trump’s close friend Chris Ruddy — pays Jihad Watch in return for users clicking on its headlines. Until recently, Amazon allowed Jihad Watch to participate in a program that promised a cut of any book sales that the site generated. All three companies have policies that say they don’t do business with hate groups.

Jihad Watch is one of many sites that monetize their extremist views through relationships with technology companies. ProPublica surveyed the most visited websites of groups designated as extremist by either the SPLC or the Anti-Defamation League. We found that more than half of them — 39 out of 69 — made money from ads, donations or other revenue streams facilitated by technology companies. At least 10 tech companies played a role directly or indirectly in supporting these sites.

Traditionally, tech companies have justified such relationships by contending that it’s not their role to censor the Internet or to discourage legitimate political expression. Also, their management wasn’t necessarily aware that they were doing business with hate sites because tech services tend to be automated and based on algorithms tied to demographics.

Two Columbus Ohio area companies. Borden Inc, Elsie is now long gone. Big at one time then got killed in the 90s. Elmer’s Glue started from Borden Inc. and is headquartered in Westerville a northern suburb/city with a big plant in West Jefferson, just west of Columbus.

One of the reasons that Columbus had the nickname “cowtown” for so long a time. Also Cowlumbus. Not so farm-like anymore, but still surrounded by farms. A few miles out of the city.

We then spoke for several minutes about the eclipse, because the casting director was interested in what we had here (she watched it on NASA TV as she was in a 70% totality area).

My best shot from western Kentucky during totality.

To say it was awe-inspiring doesn’t do it justice. It went from 90 degree hot sunshine to NIGHT so quickly, and then it was over so quickly.

I screamed, I cried, I tried to soak it all in as best I could.

Trump speaks tonight. It’ll be off a teleprompter and his handlers will be hoping he stays on script, because the moment he stops reading from it, it’ll be the usual shitshow of epic proportions.

Media morons will claim he’s sounding presidential all while sending troops to Afghanistan without having first spoken to the US commander in Afghanistan, let alone Afghan leaders. Media morons will ignore that Trump is being graded on such a curve that the ability to read from a predetermined speech is presidential, and that if he doesn’t go off message is suddenly the pivot that the media has been saying was going to happen.

Reality is a harsh mistress. Trump will never pivot. He will never ever be presidential. He’s a reactionary know nothing bigot; his advisers are just as ignorant and wont tell him harsh truths because Trump reacts poorly to anything that challenges his worldview.

Trump shouldn’t get any points for reading from a script. He shouldn’t get points for following the script.

That’s the goddamned minimum we expect from any elected official in that kind of position. That we’re watching the media morons treating him like a terrible twos toddler who can’t be trusted to do anything by himself is a harsh condemnation of not only Trump, but his admin, the GOP that elected him and continue to enable him, and the media that decided that his failings and failures were nothing as compared to Hillary’s emails (a completely overblown issue).

For in the retrospective, it turns out that the only one who wasn’t under investigation was Hillary - Bernie’s wife is caught up in Vermont shenanigans, and seemingly every last mofo in Trump’s inner circle is compromised by Russia.

Some pics from today. This is from a fishing village called Harbourville:

A couple of local dogs - Rosie (l) and Finnegan (r). Let us pet them because we miss our pup. 13/10, would drive 120Km to pet again.

Friendly as h*ck, would pet again.

We left the pups and drove up on the cliff. Scenery, awesome.

I turned around to get back in the car and saw this on the telephone pole:

On to Lunensburg, a nice little town with a ton of historic buildings.

Boats in the Lunenburg harbor.

An inn, which I assume is run by American expats (note the flag).

Tomorrow I get to go look at used guitars to see if there’s anything I want to take back home.

Thanks to everyone who shared their eclipse pictures that they took today. My own photo contribution was crummy due to circumstance and location - clouds and being far outside the path of totality. At least I was able to vicariously view the eclipse from everyone else here.

Next one in 2024 is one I’ll be planning for - I think heading South to Hot Springs AR is a plan. While Buffalo is a whole lot closer and on the path, the odds are we’ll see a blizzard there, not a total eclipse.

I took a total of twelve pictures. The four I posted were the best of those.

I’m glad I was able to contribute in a small way to your vicarious pleasure.

A good chunk of the thousand or so tourists in the village have already left. Verbal reports from over in the county seat indicate that US-385 between Alliance and Bridgeport is a massive fifty-mile long parking lot.

When you travel to the next eclipse, plan to stay for a couple days after, so you don’t have to deal with disastrous traffic.

That hasn’t always been the case & will change in the future. The distance the moon is from the Earth changes.
