Ridiculous Spam Attack Open Thread

Open • Views: 40,437

The title says it all — we’re under attack by dozens of new accounts, apparently all originating in India by way of anonymous proxies. A few weeks ago we were attacked by the same crew — they always post the same idiot spam, consisting of user support telephone numbers that may or may not be genuine — but this time is an order of magnitude worse. They’re obviously running some kind of script that lets them post LGF Pages as fast as possible.

So for now, I’ve turned off new registrations, and here’s an open thread to play in while I clean up the mess and consider how to prevent it from happening again.

It was like it was completely automated.
And they anticipated accounts being shut down and kept creating new ones by adding an number or letter to the earlier accounts.
Quite amazing to watch in action.

Prevent anyone from posting more than 1 new page in a X span (minutes/hours).

Prevent new registrants from posting pages until they’ve obtained a positive karma score.

Prevent new registrants from posting pages until X days after registering. If they fail to post into a discussion within that time, kill their registration.

Some combination of the above.

My recommendation is that new registrations should only be allowed to post pages when:
1. They have introduced themselves in a main thread and posted at least 10 comments in the conversation

2. They have received 10 updings.

As I mentioned last thread, follow Daily Kos’s rule that you can’t comment the first 24 hours after registration.

And the accounts can’t plus or minus other comments for a set period after registration. This prevents multiple accounts being registered simultaneously to get positive karma.

Bob Costas, saying what I think:

BOB COSTAS: Part of what’s happened is that sports and patriotism and the flag have been conflated to such an extent that people can’t separate out any nuance. If you go to see “Hamilton,” which is about the founding of the republic, no one said, wait a minute. Don’t raise the curtain until we hear the national anthem. Went to see “Saving private Ryan” no one said turn off the projector until we’ve had the national anthem. It’s in sports where this stuff happens.

Sometimes movingly, sometimes I submit cynically, because wrapping yourself in the flag and honoring the military is something which no one is going to object to. We all respect their sacrifice. We all honor their sacrifice, and yet what it has come to mean is that the flag is primarily and only about the military.

This is no disrespect to the military. It’s a huge part of the narrative, but Martin Luther King was a patriot. Susan B. Anthony was a patriot. Dissidents are patriots. School teachers and social workers are patriots. And yet at Yankee stadium, if we can shift sports, not only play the national anthem before the game but “God bless America” at the seventh inning stretch 81 games a year and say, please rise as the Yankees honor a military guest. I have no problem with that. I stand every time I’m in the ballpark no matter what it is, I stand. And certainly respect the military person they bring out there. But never a schoolteacher, or social worker. Patriotism comes in many forms, and what has happened is that it’s been conflated with — with kind of a bumper sticker kind of flag waving, and with the military only. So that people cannot see that in his own way, Colin Kaepernick, however imperfectly, is doing a patriotic thing and so, too, are some other players.

This issue was mentioned here a few days ago. Here’s confirmation.

iOS 11 is causing massive battery drain problems

A study conducted by security research firm Wandera shows that iOS 11 is causing iPhone and iPad batteries to drain faster than ever — much faster. The difference between iOS 10 and iOS 11 is anything but minor; batteries can drain in half the amount of time following the upgrade.

Wandera’s report shows how, on average, an iPhone or iPad running iOS 10 takes 240 minutes of usage to drain the battery from 100 percent to zero. With iOS 11 installed, this number plummets to just 96 minutes — over twice as fast.

May I express a little rant in honor of this open thread? I’ll try to be cool about it.

I don’t know why the Liberty Mutual tv commercials make me so angry with them. Maybe its just that the Southwest seems to be deluged many times per hour and that repetitious interruption is so bothersome. Maybe. However, to my mind it’s their commercial misuse of the Statue of Liberty that has so much historical meaning to me. I’m not an immigrant but its not difficult for me to imagine what place she holds in the minds of millions who are.

It is so bad that I immediately switch channels when a LM commercial starts…and that is several times per day.

Thank you.

I followed a link from that story to find this out:

In iOS 11 and later, when you toggle the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth buttons in Control Center, your device will immediately disconnect from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth accessories.” The company says that “both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will continue to be available…..”

I never noticed that. And I had been using the control center over the weekend to turn them off thinking I was preserving battery life.

For nearly the first dozen of those commercials, the woman always got into a wreck, but the man in the commercial was the one hit. That finally changed with the couple where the woman goes “Until one of us-” and the guy hangs his head.

It’s very similar to my observation that there were about four years from that one dating site with the older man (I can’t think of the sites name, it’s not match.com) where only the man would speak in the commercials.

Edit: EHarmony is the site’s name. Only the guy spoke. It was creepy.

I’ve watched the first two segments so far, up to 1963 and the JFK assassination. I’ve learned several things I never knew before, since I was only 7 when JFK died. For example, the incredibly corrupt Diem regime, which got so bad the USA told the South Vietnamese generals, do what you will, we have no say in the matter.

Several of the US experts interviewed said it was obvious from the very beginning that a war with the North was a losing proposition, but no president wanted to admit to it. So, we stayed with it far longer than was logical.

I’ve pissed off a few Vietnamese-Americans when I condemned Ngo Dinh Diem which they see with rose-tinted glasses. Of course, this was over in Garden Grove, CA, otherwise known as “Little Saigon”.

How can anyone support such a repressive regime like that? Especially a Catholic one that literally attempted to wipe out Buddhism in the country?

It’s a question you can ask Americans, of course, given the repression in Ferguson and Standing Rock (not to mention our adventures overseas). Supporters give the excesses a pass while still generally supporting the former state, thinking they could have fixed the worst of it.

Just finished the first half of 1968. I find it very fascinating since we hear Vietnamese voices as well.

They also made a deliberate choice that the only American politicians shown at all are in historical news clips; all the people today telling their memories are ordinary folk (draftees, draft dodgers, enlisted, family members). Last night’s episode included a guy with the most astonishing mustache I’ve ever seen, and a man in his 60’s confessing for the first time ever, on camera, to the thing he’s most of ashamed of doing in his entire life.

During the Tet Offensive, right in the middle of battle, somebody in his unit found a girl who was willing to fuck everybody in the unit if they’d give her a bunch of C-rations. So they did. All these years later, it still haunts him more than any of the violence.

My beef is the implication they didn’t read their policy and know the terms of what they were buying in the first place. They “found out” about their coverage after the accident..when they needed it…. Cause originally they bought it on the cheap without adequate coverage

Thank you.

Rant off

Okay…rant about commercials. Hyundai “Sweet Caroline” commercial. Repeated on too many channels too many times during one program too many times a day. Arrrrrgh!

re: #101 Backwoods_Sleuth

ummm….I believe being shot by police is the entire point of #TakeAKnee

They don’t care about the original point. They have shifted the conversation away from that to the old patriot tests of the past. I believe that is the reason all this is being done.

They are drowning the actual concerns of actual Americans with their litmus test of “respect for the flag” and any slight to their patriotism disqualifies you as an American thus they are right to ignore it.

Religion and the Flag. It is here. It is wrong. It is un-American.

Fucking fascists are using evangelical teachings tied to a symbol to form a religious army for Trump.

And the sad thing is, he is just using them. He isn’t religious, it’s just another tool for his con.

1. (asshole) Photoshop of Obama smoking a bong
2. (Me) That’s a fake photo you goat fucker
3. (asshole) Obama really is a crack head
4. (Me) You really are a goat fucker.

That’s it, a 30 second exchange. I looked at his timeline and it was wall to wall Hillary-hate. I blocked and reported him. The next morning I found out I was suspended, I “appealed” they told me I will not be reinstated. They claim that constitutes “targeted harassment.”

Targeted? Against goats? I loved your tweets. So sorry man

Well, good night Lizards. Another day tomorrow. On the bright side, a four-day weekend owing to a state holiday on Thursday with my students all taking the day off Friday.

OK, I’m writing some code to only allow posting pages after being registered for a week. That should give me time to recognize and block potential spammers.

That sounds easiest. Just remember to put that on the registration page and explain why, or otherwise they’ll be all “Wha? Why can’t I post? Is the site broken or am I randomly banned?”

Damn. These wimmens are in fire. And absolutely spot on, talking about owners vs players and harkening back to owners and what their slaves could and couldn’t do.

re: #149 electrotek

Plus, I don’t expect a large chunk of Americans to know where or what Dien Bien Phu is/was.

Well, true and false: - depending on what version of “Dien Bien Phu” history “Americans” picked up from the media at the time. Which, as I recall, was something along the line of:

-Vietnam was French colony
- French turned Saigon into “Paris of the Orient”.
- WWII, then something-something Commies took over.
-French came back and threw Commies out.
- Dien Bien Phu = big battle where French got their asses kicked
- Geneva Conference of 1954 where “everything got settled” - i.e., Korea-style Partition
- Everything was jake til the Evil Commies tried to take over the Noble (Catholic) Freedom-Loving Democratic Anti-Commies; and “WE” had to step in.

And which is still a viable historical narrative…

My god. Could someone please get the fucking first lady a stylist? Every single thing she wears in public is an abomination.

She looks three feet tall with a bowling pin waist. Shit, she looks like a plaid bowling pin.

And it probably cost $5000.00.

re: #42 HappyWarrior

Speaking of returning veterans, I was reading about how in the South, black soldiers were told not to wear their uniforms because it would offend sensibilities. Yeah and wingnuts say everyone was a lot less “PC” in those days when they couldn’t even handle a black man in a US Army uniform.

Wasn’t just in the South. And not just after WWII. Last night, on the Vietnam docu-series, they had an interview with one of the recurring narrators. He was a Marine who came home, was standing outside Logan Airport in Boston, wearing his uniform, and the cabs just kept whizzing past him. Until a cop stepped in front of one of the cabs and said, “You have to pick this man up.”

The cabbies response?

“I don’t want to go to Roxbury.”

You can serve your country and earn all the medals you want. You can sign multi-million dollar contracts. And a certain segment of the population will not see past the concentration of melanin in your skin…

Is Prince Harry giving her the “devil horns” sign, or was he caught mid-tucking his hand into his vest, Napoleon style?

OT: anybody watch Star Trek Discovery last night?

Is it worth my time?

re: #151 GlutenFreeJesus

Yes. And no.

I thought it was great. But the rest will only be aired on the CBS subscription service.

re: #152 Dr Lizardo

IMHO, a big mistake.

re: #155 Unshaken Defiance

Yes, and I unapologetically enjoyed it. Really tired of the various flavours of ST haters and superfans unhappy about it.

re: #160 Varek Raith

In the US.
It’s on Netflix in most other places.
Yarr!

This is one instance where I wouldn’t feel bad at all about “acquiring” episodes through “alternate means”; I’ve been a Netflix subscriber for more than a decade-and-a-half, back when it was only DVDs and before they got into creating original content. ST: Discovery may be CBS’ baby, but Netflix paid all of the production costs for the entire series and I’ll be damned if CBS is going to get to double-dip on me, because I’ve paid my fair share for it, just as with Netflix’s original series.
