I keep getting email ads from one of those information search companies. These consist of dire warnings about negative information and threats to my reputation on various websites. I need only sign up for a small fee and they will clean it all up.
Problem? They consistently misspell my name.

They only become “deficit hawks” when a Democrat is in the White House or the spending priority is a one Democrats are all-in on. When it’s something they want badly, they just whip out the national credit card and declare “the spending will pay for itself!”

But you watch, if the gov’t shuts down at midnight, the headline will not be “GOP Cannot Govern, Cause Shutdown Over Own Hypocrisy.”

Instead we’ll get “Government Shutdown Due to Partisan Politics,” with Rand’s hypocrisy about the deficit being shown as “the same” as House Dems withholding votes without the vote on DACA they were promised in order to end the last shutdown. In fact, expect a lot of talk about how Pelosi is “holding House Democrats hostage” to a far-left agenda and if they were left to their own devices would have voted for the bill with all due haste.

Someone explain to me - Don’t the GOP have a majority in the house? Why can’t they pass the budget there? Why do democrats have any part of the conversation? Why do the media attack the democrats for supporting their own policies while allowing the GOP to do anything without comment?

She’s called for unity but has released them to vote their conscience. But the pundits will still insist that Dems standing in solidarity against the bill with a DACA vote are in reality being “forced” by the party leadership to adopt an unpopular stance and thus are “equally” responsible for the shutdown…while leaving out that House Repubs were the first out of the gate screaming they wouldn’t vote for the bill because they’re suddenly worried about the deficit.

Sometimes (well, most times) I feel like we’re in some kind of stupidity warp drive, heading for a black hole.

Today I was looking at a cryptogram book I bought for my mom (she’ll be 95 tomorrow and still loves her brain puzzles), and the author is talking about the history and importance of cryptography, and he notes that breaking the Japanese PURPLE code allowed the US to win the critical victory at “Midland Island.”

Then later I went to the local hardware and this young guy asks if I need help. I say I’m looking for a plumber’s helper, and when he goes blank I tell him a bathroom plunger. He still looks like I’m speaking Swahili until an older guy points me to the right aisle. I’m pretty sure that kid never cleared a drain is his life.

It’s also a lie:

In 2016, the U.S. federal government spent $1.2 trillion on U.S. discretionary spending. Of this $1.2 trillion, nearly half ($584 billion) was spent on national defense. The rest of U.S. discretionary spending was allocated for education, training, employment, and social services ($92 billion), as well as transportation ($91 billion), veterans’ benefits and services ($68 billion), income security ($66 billion), health ($57 billion), administration of justice ($53 billion), international affairs ($52 billion), and other areas related to natural resources, the environment, science, space, and technology ($122 billion).[

Every indication is that the jackasses in the Oval Office thought the Porter business would blow over. That they’d just give some assurances to the press that Rob is an awesome guy, that the accusations were “gossip,” and perhaps even some snide innuendo about how his ex-wives were looking for money. I mean that’s how they’ve dealt with every other accusation of sexual harassment/assault.

It does only in that the House GOP will need Dem votes to pass the bill. And (of course) in the spirit of “bipartisanship,” the House DNC are supposed to drop any demands in exchange for their votes in order to one again save the GOP from themselves.

When I studied economics a LARGE part of GNP/GDP was government spending. I don’t think this has changed. trump destroying departments, not funding and generally letting government disappear will have a big impact on GDP - it is already impacting the share market as well as everything else represented in GDP.

GDP = C + G + I + NX. C is equal to all private consumption, or consumer spending, in a nation’s economy, G is the sum of government spending, I is the sum of all the country’s investment, including businesses capital expenditures and NX is the balance of trade (exports-imports)

So, Porter is gone because we have photographic evidence of Porter having slugged his ex wives.

We’ve got video of Trump admitting to being a sex predator - and he was elected by these same GOPers to the WH.

Even photographic evidence isn’t enough. Even video evidence isn’t enough.

Porter’s gone because he’s ultimately disposable.

The problem is that Kelly knew and covered for him. That’s a scandal in and of itself.

That’s on top of the nonstop 24/7/365 scandal that is Trumpworld.

Marijuana will be “way bigger” than craft beer, Lagunitas Brewing founder tells cannabis industry leaders (The Cannabist)

A former Budweiser executive was “way, way wrong” when he likened the cannabis industry to craft beer, the founder of Lagunitas Brewing Co. told marijuana industry leaders.

“I think (cannabis) is going to be way, way, way, way bigger,” Tony Magee said Wednesday in the opening keynote address at the National Cannabis Industry Association’s two-day Seed to Sale Show in Denver.

Magee — whose California brewery was shut down at one point for 20 days because of marijuana use on-site and who later would sell that brewery to beer conglomerate Heineken N.V. — spoke about the correlation between the craft beer and cannabis industries. He also touched on what role traditional industries and companies like Heineken might play in marijuana’s future.

Howdy, All ~~

/Rant/

I haven’t posted or commented here in a while; a significant part of that is because as a federal employee, I didn’t want to actively be involved in criticizing the President. While I certainly didn’t support him (perhaps one or two of the long-term Lizards might remember those semi-incoherent “Letters To Donald” I wrote a couple years ago, which I don’t think you’d mistake for something written by a MAGAt), there’s the oath of office, for good or bad. Short of impeachment, he *is* the President.

I came back specifically to talk (bitch) about something that just annoys the living fuck out of me; a thread about the President’s hair seems to be a good place to dump it. I thought about posting it under my real name on Facebook, but I’d potentially open myself up to “facebook fallout” for not only myself by my also my extended family. I’ve got a number of friends back home who are high school-educated white males, and they love *exactly* who you would suspect a high school-educated white male would love.

I don’t make a lot of money. I get by. I’m not so poor that I can’t afford the occasional vacation, but I do have to chop the entertainment budget to near-zero levels for at least a couple months in order to do so.

So I crunched my Uncle Fed numbers recently, and I think that based on my income I’m taking home an extra $15-ish per week. Thank you, Mr. Tax Bill. Good times; gonna paint the whole town grey. Might be as much as $20, I guess. Personally, I’d much rather see that money go to feed a few kids or help get some folks off the street. I know. Fucking hippie.

Meanwhile, it’s been reported that Randolph and Mortimer Koch could get as much as $1.4 billion. Wow.

Now, here’s the flip side of this story:

My mom lives on Social Security. She’ll be 88 years old this year. She raised three kids two of whom turned out pretty good and one who turned out me. She did that with little worthwhile help for years from my dad. There’s some hero worship there when it comes to mom.

Mom lives in a small, clean, one-bedroom apartment in a senior community and pays 30% of her income in rent. She lives on about $1,400 a month, which includes a small pension from her years as a small-town hospital admin. Whatever the number, it’s less than $1,500.

30% of $1,400 is $420. That means after paying her rent — and *before* other basic living expenses such as food are considered — she’s left with about $1,000 a month.
If I’m not mistaken, there’s a bit in the President’s budget that calls for people using subsidized housing increase their share of the rental cost from 30 to 35%. Mom falls into that class.

35% of $1,400 = $490.

She’ll need to pay an extra $70 per month in rent.

Put it together yet?

Yep.

Essentially, my 88-year-old mom, who has all of $1,000 a month to live on and will now be asked to pony up an additional $70 of that per month in rent…is paying for my tax cut.

That’s not how it’s supposed to work. And if it is, it shouldn’t be.

Further: If the numbers I read are accurate, there are some 900,000 seniors in subsidized housing. Using my mom’s income as a baseline (which may not be accurate, but you could adjust the numbers up and down as necessary), the rent increases of every senior mandated by this jump from 30% to 35% would barely pay for half of the Koch brothers will gain.

As an equation, it might go something like this:

Koch tax cut = (900,000 seniors x $70 per month x 12 months) x2

I’ll gladly admit to being a fuck up; it would have been nice to have been able to take care of mom in her advancing years but that ship sailed a long time ago. She doesn’t have a bad life, but she is dependent on the wherewithal of the state. But taking money from people with virtually nothing in order to give it back to people who seem to have no fucking idea of what to do with it (see, e.g., Americans For Prosperity. -ed.)
is just a dick move to end all fucking dick moves.

I continue to feel ill at ease actively participating in discussions about the President. But short of impeachment, a fatal cheeseburger, a comet hitting Earth or God Almighty himself descending from the heavens and being the spitting image of Donald J. Trump, I hope to be *first* in line at my local polling station on November 3, 2020 to vote him out of office.

Thank you,

Bong

There was plenty of green to go around among Aspen’s marijuana dispensaries in 2017, and more than enough to top liquor stores in revenue, as well.

Legal-pot purveyors hauled in $11.3 million in revenue last year compared with $10.5 million for liquor stores, marking the first time marijuana sales outpaced booze for the year in Aspen.

That’s a drop in the bucket for Aspen. Retailers generated over $730 million in revenues in 2017.

The failure with Schumer was because the attempt was total clown shoes. Compare it to Franken, whose “accusers” magically showed up in the press long enough to chase him out of office, then mysteriously vanished as soon as their purpose was fulfilled.

My way of explanation, just before I left for my trip, I took on a proofreading/editing job of a 198-page book. The money was good, so I took it even though I was supposedly on holiday. Then, once I finished that, the same client offered me another job (191-page book) with a similar tight deadline and pay scale. So I took that, too.

What makes each job tricky is the proofreading of an English translation by Chinese writers of Chinese texts. I’m charged with polishing the language to make it sound more “native” while preserving the original style of the author as much as possible. Given his flowery descriptions of pastoral idylls, that’s a tall task. And I am glad I don’t have to do it while cooped up inside my flat with snow on the ground outside. Here, at least, I can have a pleasant walk in 75 degree sunshine.

Conservatism is about gaining and maintain power. It has always been thus, and has accomplished nothing, in any nation, at any time in history.

Every generation has to fight against conservatism trying to drag a society back into the long night of fear and hatred. It is people like this fellow, like the lawyers who swarmed airports in the first Muslim ban, like those who march in support of women and science, the thousands of women registering to run for office, who are fighting conservatism now.

“45 Russian athletes lose appeal banning them from Olympics.”

Gosh, what a shame.

Am I had person routing for the Russian to fall or fuck up? I don’t want them to get hurt or anything, I just want them all to lose.

I always hope for good players on teams opposing my favorites to get a cramp. A big cramp. That’s acceptably evil IMO.

First off the two starting bands were good, synth-pop Nation Of Language (new flock of seagulls), and Courtship from Ca, really good original stuff. Courtship all wore matching orange jumpsuits and I am always down for that.
The Wombats were good, I don’t think they were having a great night. They had gotten up early to do the Radio station’s
“Kegs and Eggs” promo concert at 6:30am. “Jump Into the Fog”, my favorite, he left out a verse, had a hard time hitting the high notes in the chorus, and completely mangled a chord change leading up to the finish. But it was good. Sold out a 1400 person venue. My son didn’t like it so much, he got claustrophobic. But he can’t say I didn’t take him to a concert at 15 like his sister.

Now I got to put up with this shit again…I’m honestly at the point where I feel like tossing in the CSRS retirement papers and leave Social Security…

Don’t do this!!!! Stay with CSRS. CSRS is much better than FERS. FERS requires you to depend on your TSP savings more than CSRS.
