This thread talks about a number of the theological problems that American Evangelicalism is based on - but the greatest of these is the false teachings that John Nelson Darby first proposed (and popularized) as the pre-tribulation rapture in 1827. Darby and other prominent Brethren were part of the Brethren movement which impacted American Christianity, especially with movements and teachings associated with Christian eschatology and fundamentalism, primarily through their writings. With the publication of the The Fundamentals (a series of 90 essays starting in 1910) this garbage theology got it’s foot in the door every place that fell for the anti-modern world attitudes of Fundamentalism.

So like they say in the thread, why worry about tomorrow if the end is nigh? No need to repent for real from their sins and their racism. Never mind that even while saying apocalyptic things, Jesus also said no one knows when the end is coming and Paul taught that even if the end is nigh, one is not freed from living a virtuous life, working or caring for the community. And god forbid they should be forced to live up to the promise of Paul that “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” for that would require them to live the Way rather than grift their way through it.

This level of error is why Christianity in America is not worth following, not really, unless you find one of the small church groups trying to emerge from this mess. Some of us try hard to live the way of Jesus but when you watch these asshole shit on the world and shriek that “God sez it’s OK ‘cause ur all gonna get killed in our fantasy of the Endtimes!” , well, it just makes me want to give up.

OTOH, why should I surrender what I am just because those assholes stealing the name of the annointed? I’ll do what I can despite those who want to make atheism the only really sane choice in modern America (yeah, I know. I never claimed to be sane ;)

This may sound lofty and pretentious. I will say it, though. After I read “God Is Not Great” by Hitch, I found a deep and everlasting peace with religion. I was agnostic before I read that book, I became atheist after. And I’m not one of those guys that *proselytizes* that shit. I find it something not even worth discussing or debating, which is another important idea I took away from “God Is Not Great.” I know there are a lot of religious Lizards, and I respect that. Live and let live. That’s written somewhere in some religious text, right? Anyhoo, it’s true a single book made me turn agnostic to atheist.

Yep. He was not waterboarded. I meant to include include in my comment above, that Tim Kennedy should volunteer to have experts waterboard him and see whether he is equally dismissive of it.

As part of a medical procedure, I personally had to undergo something that was a mild form of stress position for about 30 minutes — and it was a nightmare experience that I will definitely avoid in the future.

Was Gina Haspel ever waterboarded as part of her training?

Again…some people are just so close to the vicinity of ‘getting it’ and yet…

Firstly, as someone rightfully pointed out to Matt in the comments, acquiescing to A basically is…what we’ve kind of done for decades, and it’s what MLK kind of pointed out regarding the difference between a “negative peace” (the absence of tension) to “positive peace” (the presence of justice). The idea is that a lot of this isn’t just somehow a mass rise in racial tension. It’s that it’s been there all along, and just being exposed, and if that somehow makes folks turn to the GOP, that still is telling in their sympathies.

Secondly, if calling out people for their behavior and for their supposed sympathies ‘forces’ them to identify more with the sympathies they supposedly didn’t have, answer one question for me: how come the ‘liberal media’ attacks haven’t resulted in some sort of hyper-lefty intractable media juggernaut, and in fact has only resulted in the Foxification of news? How come repeatedly attacking ‘liberal media’ icons has resulted constantly in cowing and kowtowing, rather than the supposed instant hardening of hearts and being driven into the arms of those who would supposedly welcome them by such attacks?

Maybe the entire thing is bullshit, and is justification for shitty folks finding ways to blame their shittiness on the oppressed rather than the oppressors. Just saying.
