A. Well. Oiled. Machine.
Dajerria Becton, who was 15 years old at the time, back in 2015, was last seen in a viral video getting wrestled to the ground by then-McKinney, Texas, Police Officer Eric Casebolt. He later resigned from the force.
Casebolt was seen dragging Dajerria by the hair, slamming her to the ground, pinning her down and then handcuffing her, all while she called out for someone to call her mother.
Following the incident, Dajerria and her caregiver, Shashona Becton, sued the Police Department and the city of McKinney for $5 million. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, under the terms of the settlement, the Bectons, as well as other plaintiffs in the case, were awarded a total of $184,850 last month, with $148,850 of that amount going to Dajerria.

The economy is still chugging along thanks to the economic policies inherited by Trump. The GOP tax scam hasn’t fully worked its way into the economy because people aren’t seeing the benefit. They don’t optimize their withholding and their tax refunds will only show next April.
All the while, millions are losing health coverage and the GOP is angling to destroy what’s left of Obamacare, including all the protections for preexisting conditions - actions that wont show up on the budget line, but which will drag the economy as people have medically induced bankruptcies and hospital bankruptcies resume as indigent care rises.

I kept giving her the benefit of the doubt, but this is just a bridge too far.
I am not going to label myself as a Melania hater, but I don’t care one bit for her and what she has to say.
She married a guy that is basically a home wrecker and it is well documented about his past to the point it would be easy for her to know who and what he is.
And, when she asked about wanting to see the birth certificate on a TV talk show that was a bridge too far.
She covered for him on the Inside Hollywood tape saying he was recorded secretly and it was only ‘boy talk.’
She bought in…that was enough for me to distrust her. She is not stupid. She knows what she is doing.
To me, that jacket was probably intended for the media to see it.

The Columbus Zoo has announced they have two baby giraffes on the way. They are expected this fall. Since the gestation is so long, they waited to announce it to be sure of delivery time, etc.
The link goes to a small story about the announcement, but there is also a nice long video of the Zoo staff working with the zoo’s giraffes on World Giraffe Day. I can’t find a way to embed the video as it must be linked from Facebook or something.
Animal lovers will find the video fun and educational too. And it shows how nice the Zoo is and how popular this time of the year.
NBC4i - Two giraffes pregnant at Columbus Zoo
POWELL, OH (WCMH) — The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium will be welcoming two more giraffes this fall.
According to the zoo, two giraffes, Cami and Zuri, are pregnant and due August and September.
Giraffes have a gestation period of more than 470 days, so the zoo has been waiting a while to make the announcement.
The announcement was made Thursday during a special at the zoo during World Giraffe Day.

You are assuming an appeal will happen….
The judge didn’t do away with the CFPA but instead ordered it removed from the case:
For the foregoing reasons, Defendants’ motion (ECF No. 39) is DENIED. Because Plaintiff Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is unconstitutionally structured and lacks authority to bring claims under the CFPA, the Clerk of Court shall terminate
Plaintiff Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as a party to this action.
It would be completely crazy for the Trump administration to not appeal the order (they may dislike the CFPA, but once they find a way to use it to their own ends, they’re not going to like this ruling being thrown in their faces).
Secondly, the State of New York is a plaintiff in the case as well, they may have standing for an appeal because this ruling so completely out of line with precedent (for fuck’s sake, she disagrees with an en banc ruling).

And you’ll be OK as long as the API doesn’t change. I would suggesting adding a check to see if the function doesn’t exist first, just in case.
Right, that’s usually good practice. But I have a different approach - when deploying Javascript code I always pass it through the Google Closure Compiler, which detects if you’re using ES6 features and adds polyfills for whatever you need to stay backward compatible. So I don’t need to worry about ES5 or earlier when writing the code.

I am almost thinking that it was directed towards Donald, especially because of his lame explanation tweet. It was in such bad taste that it doesn’t matter who it was directed to because the topic was defenseless children being ripped out of their parent’s hands and put into concentration camps.

…The guardians didn’t step more than two feet away from the kid. One of the four was an armed police officer. I thought, Does it take an army of adult men to take care of one elementary schooler? I walked over to the boy, crouched down, and asked him, in Spanish, ‘How do you feel?’ ‘Sad,’ he said.
“The boy had been in custody for over a month.
…….…I asked the ‘clinician’, ‘When is this child going to be reunited with his parents?’ He was evasive. First it was ‘Oh, well, we don’t know.’ And then it was ‘Well, he won’t be reunited with his parents unless he behaves.’
……
…While I held him, I heard the men standing behind me muttering that I was ‘rewarding his bad behavior.’ Thankfully, it was in English, so I don’t think the boy understood what they were saying, but it just revealed their attitudes toward these kids.”
These people have set themselves up to be abusers and are showing signs of rationalizing any arbitrarily cruel treatment of the children in their custody.
Kid A what might you think of this?
(ATHENS, GA.,) The National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) calls on all politicians who visit migrant child detention facilities to insist on being accompanied by visual journalists and to insist that Immigration and Customs Enforcement permits unfettered access to those facilities for all journalists.
We also call on news media organizations to decline to publish handout photographs from the government or others when full and meaningful visual access is denied.
When important issues face a nation, and the truth must be ascertained, images - taken by journalists who adhere to strict codes of ethics - truly matter. The only photographs the nation has seen from inside those facilities have come from the government.
This is unacceptable. We believe that access to those facilities by journalists is both appropriate and warranted. The nation should not be relegated to relying solely on governmental depictions when it comes to such matters of public concern.

OK, all you great political minds. Mark Sanford is obviously not a fan of the yam, and now that he’s lost his primary, he obviously should have no more fucks to give. And, some of Sanford’s strongest stances have been opposition to offshore drilling (which the Trumpette who beat him is all for) and other environmental issues.
Anybody have any clever ideas of how we can persuade him to endorse the Dem, Joe Cunningham, who’s running for his seat?
I saw on Facebook that the line on the right is “Why didn’t the Democrats care about these children during the Obama administration?” Um, we did. George Bush tried to do something about immigration, but the rest of the GOP went nuts. And Obama created DACA.

Mostly environmental issues—for renewable energy and stronger emission control standards.
For campaign finance reform.

Civil liberties. In the age of the internet, government’s ability to look into our lives has exponentially increased, but I think the Fourth Amendment is still vital as a cornerstone to liberty.

Melania Trump cancels the visit to the real detention center, where the press was banned from shooting photos and video, but holds a photo-op at a church shelter that is NOT a detention center. https://t.co/2neyffeAEF pic.twitter.com/zDPdt3Zhjj
— Sarah Reese Jones (@PoliticusSarah) June 21, 2018
The Trump administration wanted the images on cable news of the First Lady visiting Upbring New Hope Children’s Shelter. They staged quite a photo-op at the shelter. The problem is the White House then canceled the trip to the real detention center where children are being caged.
The White House blamed flash flooding for their cancelation of the visit to the detention center, but locals knew of the flash flooding yesterday, which leads one to suspect that the plan was always for Trump to visit the nice shelter for the cameras and then return back to Washington.
The administration had already banned reporters from taking photographs or video of Trump at the detention center. According to the White House Press Pool as provided to PoliticusUSA, ” The tours will be pen and pad only for the pool. No photos or audio, for the safety and privacy of children, we are told.”
Trump is suddenly worried about the safety and the privacy of children being kept in cages. Sure, he is.

Shock poll: Dem leads Republican candidate in district Trump won by 50 points
https://t.co/dkLH93A9LU pic.twitter.com/K5x5YCivdt— The Hill (@thehill) June 22, 2018
Democratic state Sen. Richard Ojeda is leading the race for West Virginia’s open 3rd Congressional District, a poll released Thursday shows, despite the fact that President Trump won the district by more than 50 points in 2016.
Monmouth University polled the district using two distinct likely voter projections—one assuming a typical midterm electorate turns out in November, and another predicting a Democratic surge in opposition to Trump.
In the typical midterm model, Ojeda leads state Del. Carol Miller (R) by 6 points, 48 percent to 39 percent. His lead grows to 9 points when screening for a Democratic surge.
Patrick Murray, the director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, pegged the lead on Ojeda’s personal story. He’s a former Army paratrooper who was been a vocal supporter of the state teacher’s strike. While he voted for President Trump in 2016, he’s been open with his disagreements with the president.
“Unlike other hotly contested House races in the country where dislike of the president is giving Democrats a boost, this West Virginia district seems to be competitive because the Democratic candidate has his own populist persona. But neither candidate is particularly well know yet, so this dynamic could change,” Murray said.
The majority of voters has no opinion on either candidate. Among those who do have opinions, both candidates have a double-digit net-favorability rating.

Older American children of color are very unlikely to be adopted. But religious conservatives do adopt lots of foreign minority babies. Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin adopted a passel of them from Ethiopia, and I know quite a few who adopted from China when me and my wife did.

I was trying to find the link I had read before, but a lot of evangelicals adopt minorities thinking they can raise the children “correctly”, meaning colorblind. Which not only means ignoring a side of the child’s identity, but putting them out of place in the rest of the world.

I’ve noticed that too. It’s how a lot of Evangelicals try to skirt accusations they’re racist.

My wife and I adopted four, one from Mississippi and three from North Texas. When we didn’t insist on a healthy white infant we went straight to the head of the line. And it was cheap. Two served, in the Air Force and Army, and have children of their own now.

I’m proud to know you, even if just on this blog.
One of the first kids I coached in basketball was a young black kid who was adopted by a white family. We really liked the kid. He was a good listener, teammate, and while he didn’t have the most natural game on the team, He begged us to pick him again if possible but someone saw his potential and snagged him up. he did briefly make the high school freshman or JV team. We played his team this winter in House league and he was a big part of why we lost. I joshed with him about where that downtown ability was when we had him five years ago. He’s got a good head on his shoulders. I’m sure he’ll do well wherever he goes in life.

I think that’s why this whole thing has been toughest for parents or those who know young children. I’ve been seeing my niece in a lot of those kids. I spent a good part of this evening with her, my brother, sister in law, and a friend of sil’s playing with this cool toy in the yard. My niece loved it and she was playing with her echo too. It just makes me a little sad because I want that life for all kids. A life free of fear of not knowing about where their parents are and just enjoying a beautiful summer night.

I’ve mentioned this before but perhaps not directly but my grandfather’s parents were from Slovenia too, his motehr was pregnant with his brother when she arrived. That made my Uncle Stan technically an “anchor baby”. I enver met him and he died when my Mom was pretty young too but he was someone who later served in the US Army, raised his wife’s children from her first marriage, and I’m almost positive got my grandfather into fishing. I was a lead preschool teacher for 1-2 yr olds many moons ago. I had 8 in my class plus an assistant. It was all we could do to keep the diaper changing rotation and feeding schedules for just those 8 kids going plus we actually played with them, read to them and had to do a lot of holding and comforting. And singing and little games. I cannot imagine what these little ones must be feeling. It’s going to cause permanent damage that will take so much to repair. And for what in the FUCK? Yes exactly. All of this. I cover at my sisters home daycare every few weeks or so when needed and the amount of care, diligence, love and hardwork that goes into creating a healthy environment is staggering. The rewards are great too. I just can’t imagine standing there and doing nothing to protect these kids. I do not understand all of the people who were so complicit and continue to be. I do not get it and I will never normalize it or forget it.
And you’re right. November is critical but it’s too far away for this ongoing American atrocity. We have to find, protect and reunite these children now.

My second wife was adopted. After she died, I took on the mission of trying to find her birth mother. It was very tough, but I succeeded with the help of a private detective. I learned that she had in fact been looking for the baby she gave up in 1958 and I decided to contact her. I eventually met her, which I was hesitant to do because it would mean sharing the sad news about her daughter. She was sad to hear it, of course, but over-joyed to meet our daughter. Both sad and heartwarming. You did good.
Besides my wife, I have also mentioned the girl I nearly married a few years before, the one whose fundy parents objected to the marriage because I was divorced. She, too, was adopted and was literally a foundling: Somebody left her on her future parents’ doorstep when she was 3 or 4 days old. Things were simpler in those days, and they were prominent people in a small town, so a legal adoption was easy to arrange. Her actual parentage was the subject of much local gossip and apparently is to this day. She looks Hispanic and a DNA test eventually confirmed this, but nobody knows who the birth parents really were or they aren’t telling if they do.

No doubt and their defense against a bill that would save even more lives is still gross. Too many high profile cases in Cali mimmick parts of what is so broken with our carceral state all over the country. I have high expectations that the state can set a better standard that other states can eventually follow.
