The president claims ICE has liberated entire American towns from MS-13, which is something I’ve never seen on the news. Sounds like a topic you should hold special Senate hearings on, sir. Because surely he’s not lying.

He is confusing them with the Magificent Seven

Remember that nuke site the North Koreans blew up to great fanfare a few weeks back?

I knew it - I even posted my speculation that the North Koreans wouldn’t destroy that site unless they had another one ready to go the second the heat was off.

re: #13 I Would Prefer Not To

I’m worried. My 1 yr old grandson is at my house. He does nothing for himself, pays for nothing, cries when he doesn’t get his way, throws tantrums, and wears diapers that I have to change. I’m afraid this kid is a Democrat! Hope he outgrows it.

Repeat from yesterday: he is inadvertently reminding us that we are all born dependent, some of us remain dependent even after childhood through disability and that many more of us become dependent with old age.

And that we need a society that makes sure that people are taken care of. Even when they are not producing more than they are consuming. The Free Market alone is not there to give us that, it is merely a means of balancing supply and demand and directing flows of capital to where they can do the most benefit.

We need a government that ensures that the markets are there to work for everyone, producers as well as consumers, employers and employees, the able and the dependent among us.

It was 96F at the rally today, but a good turnout. It was mostly older folks—the sensible-shoes crowd. Local immigration attorneys and immigrant-rights activists spoke. And there was singing. I’m not much for the group protest song thing, but I joined in.

Hey, at least her pants had pockets. I showed up for jury duty once (granted, it was justice court) and one of the other potential jurors had on a grody t-shirt and a pair of sweatpants raggedly cut off at the knees. I, on the other hand, was way overdressed, as I looked like I was ready to present a case to the judge.

I didn’t attend a rally today but I’m writing some post cards to reps and senators. I haven’t come up with a list yet, but hopefully I can drop 16 of these cards in the mail tomorrow. These will be my hand-delivered signs. Any suggestions for recipients? I think I’m going to quit wasting postage on soul-impaired Mitch McConnell.

I’m trying something new this time. I copied a Trump tweet, put a a bunch of them on stickyback paper, and wrote the message around it. I realize this tweet is a week (100 years) old, but he’s still spewing this message. I swiped my message from an ACLU tweet.

My handwriting is 64 y.o. out-of-practice-draftsman style. I suck at cursive, and no apologies for preferring blue pens.

Good for the Senators - but I had thought (as did Sen. McConnell, apparently) that lynching had been made a Federal offense years ago.
I know in reading the history of the Civil Rights movement in this country, anti-lynching laws were a regular staple of proposed legislation since forever; but were inevitably blocked/filibustered by Southern Reps/Senators: usually on the grounds that they were “redundant”: lynching already being illegal (actually “illegal”) in most states.
Of course, unlike Mitch McConnell, I’m not a 33-year veteran of the US Senate, so I have some sort of excuse, at least….

I was writing shouty-style before it was shouty.

I asked an aide to one of my senators what happens to mail from non-constituents. She said it varies, but it’s quite possible it gets trashed without being logged. Sometimes it gets routed to the ‘proper’ senator, so Klobuchar and Smith may get lots of duplicates.

Edit: McCain is joining my list.

Incels Embrace Capital-Gazette Shooter, But Only After They Learn He Harassed a Woman (Goes to We Hunted the Mammoth, more at the link):

Several hours after the news broke that a gunman had shot five people dead at the Capital Gazette newspaper offices in Annapolis, Maryland, but before we knew much of anything about the shooter himself, I took a look at the forums on Incels (dot) me to see if anyone on the site was saying anything about this latest mass killing.

Incels, after all, have an almost reflexive tendency to praise or excuse anyone who kills a high enough number of the “normies” incels consider their sworn enemies, and many of them worship incel mass killer Elliot Rodger as a virtual saint.

David Furtelle went into the swill known as Incels (dot) me right away, and noted there was no real commentary there except people speculating it was political because it was a newspaper.

When the news came out that the shooter had harassed a woman employee at the newspaper, the comments changed, with commentators cheering on the murders.

The Libertarian Party has a few things to say about the NY-14 Democratic Primary upset by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Dear Democratic Socialists Who Think You’re Having a Moment: It’s Me, a Libertarian, Who’s Been Through This. (goes to Reason Magazine)

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s impressive win might not mean all that much. But best of luck, comrades.

Democratic socialism, the ideology with which Ocasio-Cortez identifies, appears to be having a political moment. To which I say, as a libertarian who has been through the whole an-idea-whose-time-has-finally-come experience: good luck with that, comrades. The signs are easy to misread.

Yes, Ocasio-Cortez is aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America—she even has the red rose of socialism in her Twitter profile—and ran on a democratic socialist’s platform: Medicare for all, free college tuition, a federal jobs guarantee. (She also wants to abolish ICE, but that’s not really a socialist-specific idea: we libertarians want to abolish ICE, too, whereas Sanders, who can’t quite bring himself to support the elimination of a government program, does not.)

People out chasing on a weekend, but I don’t think there has been much of interest yet:

The storms in NE Iowa were giving the eagles quite a battering. Their live stream earlier showed one of the youngsters (they are all out of the nest now) out on a limb by himself, before the rain hit. It was getting quite windy though and I could hear limbs breaking in the background earlier.

Since everyone’s posting their weather problems let me post mine. Up here on the AK panhandle the weather has sucked all year. Nothing has been “normal”. So far this year we have had a grand total of 5 days where the temps have exceeded 70. One of those days was last week where the temp got up to 85…a tie for the 3rd warmest day ever in Juneau. Most of the days are currently in the mid 50’s to mid 60’s. At nights, temps fall to the high 40’s to low 50’s which require the furnace to take the chill out of the house.

Along with the cool weather is has been rainy. Some heavy rain but mostly showers and drizzle. The local gardeners are struggling. The soil is very cool and very moist. Not good conditions for growing anything but root crops.

So, be careful what you wish for weather-wise.

Reasons to hate commercial country music. Many more at the lengthy WaPo feature.

But today, country music and alcohol are inextricably linked as never before. Not only has the genre become known (and sometimes mocked) for its sheer amount of drinking-themed songs, but an increasing number of country acts have created their own brands of booze, including Chesney’s rum, Blake Shelton’s Smithworks vodka, Miranda Lambert’s Red 55 wine and Toby Keith’s Wild Shot mezcal.

According to the Country Music Association, fans of country music ages 18 to 24 have increased by 54 percent over the past decade, and the format has grown in popularity on the coasts — not just middle America, as many assume. The CMA also reported country music consumers have an average annual household income of $82,000, above the national average, and that amount is climbing.

Sounds like prime Trump demographic. How can that household income number not be BS? I know poor people can’t really afford to go to concerts anymore, but WTF.

I marched today in Arlington Heights, Illinois. It was great, much bigger turnout than I expected, rough estimate 500. Great speakers, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and lesser known advocates & faith leaders. Being that it’s an upper middle class suburb of Chicago it was mostly well-meaning white liberals, but a generous enough sprinkling of POC. All in all, a hot (98 degrees) and satisfying day.

When my wife and I lived in Oklahoma, we traveled to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The first night we were there, there were horrendous storms and a local tornado. The next morning the motel owner told us to take our weather back to Oklahoma when we go.

Too old if Donny is to be believed he wants younger judges so they can remain on the bench longer.

I just hope that somehow Republicans help him come up with an actual law expert that understands the Constitution instead of reality show type candidates that know nothing but ideology.

I still have a little belief in the power of the document they are sworn to protect. The enormity of the job may shake some sense in them and they reason things out.

Yeah, it is a wish and a prayer. With Trump and this GOP…it’s all a gamble.

Somewhere in Russia there is someone, possibly just an un-appreciated clerk, who has it within their power to change the world, and become one of the great figures of history. All he or she has to do is defect to a trustworthy Western country (ie not Trump’s US) with the full KGB/FSB files on agents of influence in the west. It’s risky, needless to say, but all great achievements involve risk.

Is that ‘merely’ a herpes scar on his nose, or is that a syph gumma?

Which admittedly might be a bit of explanation for why he was nuts enough to set that fire…
