Well, that Facebook thread (which I couldn’t stomach to the end) certainly contained comments from disgusting, horrible people. I’m sorry they’re in your life in any way, shape or form :( (and yes, I’m well aware of how many millions more of them there are). But hopefully there might be wavering lurkers influenced by what you wrote. I think the very act of pushback accomplishes something even if you don’t outright change minds (that is, you’ve made the bigots, hypocrites, and fascist-wannabes aware that their bile won’t go unchallenged).
Because really, this is what we’re up against:

Don’t know if makeitstop will see this, but there was a great anecdote about Les Pauls in Marc Maron’s podcast interview with Joe Walsh. Joe said that he loved Les Paul’s playing and when he found a Les Paul guitar, he bought it. He got two in his early years—hard to find, but not hard to find because everyone was buying them, quite the contrary; everyone was buying Beatles gear like Richenbachers and Gretsch. Anyway, he said that when James Gang was opening for the new band Led Zeppelin, he told Telecaster-devotee Jimmy Page that “you can’t play a single coil in a three piece band.” So he gave one of his two LPs to Jimmy Page, and that is Page’s Les Paul #1

It’s funny because abstractly, intellectually, people seem to understand that that’s what that parable meant to people of the day. They just aren’t willing to take the mental leap to connect it to concepts that are relevant to today. When somebody does that for them, suddenly all the homilies start to sound a little hollow. re: #52 William Lewis
Like dopefishlives said, if you remind people of the hard meaning behind the Good Samaritan by making it The Good ISIS Commander, all you get is crickets because people would rather be tribal and hate having their excuses taken away.
Well, sort of.
The writers of the Torah, upon return from Babylon (where the Jerusalem elite had been taken years previously), wrote their story to demonize Samaria (one of the old religious high places of the Israelites) and promote Jerusalem (and thus the inhabitants of said town) as God’s chosen.
So the parable of the Good Samaritan is a counter-narrative to that old propaganda.
But the Samaritans were (titularly) Israelites that Assyria had conquered before Jerusalem fell. So in theory the Samaritans were close kin to the Judahites.
In this light, the parable of the Good Samaritan is more like the legendary Hatfields and McCoys feud, with the Christ figure telling the McCoys to treat the Hatfields as their neighbor (which in both the case of the Samaritans-Jerusalemites and the Hatfields-McCoys is true geographically.)
While it is common to hear sermons trying to extend the Good Samaritan parable to encompass all of humanity, as has been noted by many, the parable is not about the Good Roman.

And I agree with John Cole on this:
They are attacking her because she is a woman, because she is young, because she is of the left, and they want to bitch slap her and let her know who is boss. Actually covering her positions on issues is much harder than the easy script- “She’s inexperienced, making rookie mistakes, and she’s not ready for prime time.”
Also, as he points out, ICE went after an immigrant because he spoke to the media.
This truly hurts me deep. I’m from Beaver County in Pennsylvania and I knew Bob Masters the former DA. Then I read this paragraph…
In Beaver County, for example, former District Attorney Robert Masters not only ignored reports of a priest who molested boys in the 1960s, but he also bragged about his silence to the local bishop. He admitted to the grand jury that he sat on the investigation because he wanted political support from the diocese.
And back in the 60s, classmates would talk about the abusive priests when were were in the locker room dressing for gym class…and they wouldn’t go to the police or county sheriff for help.
And Pope Francis ain’t doing a fucking thing to stop these monsters.
Just another reason why I truly despise religion…

Probably the second half of the statement: “or the free exercise thereof.” Being able to take a church out of existence kind of prohibits that. When it was originally written, it was preventing favoritism, but think of how it could have been used later. I mean, how hard would it have been to have taxed black churches, and then use it to go after blacks meeting in homes as violating the law.

My son and daughter are Dems, as is the younger stepson. But the older stepson was a Trump supporter, whose enthusiasm for the Great Orange Turd has waned considerably. It’s not that. They’ve lived here for 20 years and she’s fixated on an incident that happened several years ago to the next-door neighbor. The guy flies large model planes and has a small delivery truck he hauls them around in. (Which, btw, is too tall to fit in their garage.) Someone tried to steal the truck one night and when trying to back the truck out of the driveway, failed to see a guy in another vehicle barreling down the street. It was a LOUD smashup, the neighbors all poured out of their houses and numerous cops showed up to sort everything out. Mom doesn’t think the neighbors are a problem, it’s just there’s a park across the street which attracts a lot of non-neighbors who don’t drive safely and who might be interested in a burgundy Subaru Forester with a banged up passenger door as they’re barreling down the street. Or at least, that’s as far as I can figure out her thinking.

This whole story is disgusting. Dude is a violent sociopath, but he’s still treated with kid gloves ‘cause he’s a straight white male.
*sigh* So I’m a dutiful daughter and went out to move the SUV into the garage…and discovered the tire pressure light is on. This is not the first occurrence this week; I topped the tires off on Monday when it came on and the light went off after I did. But a reoccurrence means I have a leaky tire. *sigh* I can’t be driving my mom around with this going on, so I have to squeeze in an appointment at the dealership ASAP. Which means Wednesday, aka the same day my mom has a shrink appointment in the afternoon. I haven’t even checked my work calendar, I just scheduled the appointment and decided I’d deal with having to move meetings later.
Classmate: You sir, are why I hate all the hate from the liberals.. but I do miss ur face..
Me: I spent a week at Lankenau hospital. If you call an appeal to your humanity hate, you have a long way to go
Him:I mean I criminal is a criminal.. if I do something illegal I get arrested the same applies to everyone. No matter what. That is how a sovereign government works.
Me:I doubt this will penetrate that sharp legal mind of yours but illegal entry is a civil offense not a criminal one. So your first argument is wrong. Second the punishment must fit the “crime”. Locking up children who committed no crime is an incredible overreaction. Depriving them of their parents’ care is child abuse. There is no way around it. And you call me hateful? You are ceding the future of people you should care about (including yourself) to bigoted, hateful, corrupt, incompetent people. And you call yourself a nurse? You’re not fit to call yourself a human being. Try harder to understand the world around you. Try harder to appreciate the people around you who care for you and care for people they don’t even know. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes. How many times have you done illegal things and gotten away with it? Until you find your humanity, go fuck yourself.

Oh, quit being a drama queen…people make mistakes and, as far as the OP posting the (late) Lemon obit, that was a fairly minor and innocent one.
Lemon was a great, but don’t conflate a flub on that with something of more real importance (like what’s going on right now in the world), because it ain’t nowhere near.

Profound observation:
It’s interesting how people are trying to combat anomie with simulated companionship. But I’m deeply ambivalent as to whether its sad or disturbing; on one hand, people are alienated and struggling to connect…on the other, the simulated “company” seems tailored to create the artifice of a consensual interaction, but specifically a conflictless relationship that’s effectively wish fulfillment and deferential awe.
Crass observation:
You know the owner’s manual for that thing has an extensive “I tried to fuck my Gatebox” troubleshooting section.

2. He believes that allowing Nazis to talk makes him liberal (first amendment), which means there really won’t be anything other than a 2x4 that will clue him in.

I don’t intend to post there at first (rather only to automatically x-post my tweets), but maybe it will be useful in the long run.
Also useful for those who hate twitter and don’t want to join it for this reason (Nazis etc.) but still want to tweet. Mastodon bans Nazis, or so I’ve been told.

…the labyrinthine world of doublethink. To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget, whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself — that was the ultimate subtlety; consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word ‘doublethink’ involved the use of doublethink.
… Whatever the party holds to be truth, is truth. It is impossible to see reality except by looking through the eyes of the Party.

Remember when Rudy didn’t listen to recommendations that the city’s emergency command center not be located at the World Trade Center?
The New York Police Department produced a detailed analysis in 1998 opposing plans by the city to locate its emergency command center at the World Trade Center, but the Giuliani administration overrode those objections. The command center later collapsed from damage in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.
…
The memorandum, which has not been previously disclosed, cited a number of “significant points of vulnerability.” Those included: the building’s public access, the center’s location on the 23rd floor, a 1,200-gallon diesel fuel supply for its generator, a large garage and delivery bays, the building’s history as a terrorist target, and its placement above and adjacent to a Consolidated Edison substation that provided much of the power for Lower Manhattan.
