YouTube

Thank you so much for watching this video!

Song: “Shofukan” (Originally performed by Snarky Puppy, Released through Ropeadope Records)

Soprano: India Carney
Alto: Erin Bentlage
Tenor: Nathan Heldman
Baritone: Ben McLain
Bass: Tracy Robertson
Vocal Percussion: Charlie Arthur

Arrangement: Charlie Arthur
Video Produced by: Danny Olefsky

This is the first of an, admittedly, slow, but developing series of vocal adaptations of songs that make me feel a certain way enough to warrant their reimagining. I couldn’t have been more humbled by the sheer talent of everyone that I worked with on this project. Thanks to the collaborative drive, passion, and expertise of everyone involved, this chart was brought to life far beyond what I imagined possible. I can’t wait to start producing more.

Special thanks to:
Ben Bram
Hannah Lewis
Paula Lewis
Lily Lester
Danny Olefsky

Again, thank you so much for watching!

If only we could think of something that actually caused the deaths in Jacksonville, and regulate that, but for the life of us we just can’t think of what that might be.

The White House is gonna blow up. It’s getting close.

Trump’s actions today and Melania acting like this. Today he seemed he is one step away from blowing up at a reporter.

The images today show he is coiled and ready to just go off.

I bet Trump is turning evil around her and his sons, maybe even Ivanka is hearing it. I bet he can be one mean husband/father.

All the talk of him starting to lose it around staff; then people being called in to try to talk him down.

Not good. Unsustainable. It’s gotta pop.

And as Charles Pierce points out:

Then he picked Sarah Palin to run with him and that was the ballgame, at least for me… The choice of Palin was where I climbed completely off the tire swing. Only someone dangerously blinded by ambition would consider putting her that close to the national command authority. He had lost his way entirely. Anybody who wants to be president badly enough that he’d pick a half-bright human parka as his running mate never should be elected to that office.

Former Australian PM says Rupert Murdoch is the biggest threat to democracy in the world

Writing in the Sydney Morning Herald, former Labor Party leader Kevin Rudd slammed the billionaire media mogul as “the greatest cancer on the Australian democracy.”

“Murdoch is not just a news organisation. Murdoch operates as a political party, acting in pursuit of clearly defined commercial interests, in addition to his far-right ideological world view,” he charged.

The former prime minister noted parallels with America, where the News Corp executive chairman owns Fox News and The Wall Street Journal.

“In the United States, Murdoch’s Fox News is the political echo chamber of the far right, which enabled the Tea Party and then the Trump party to stage a hostile takeover of the Republican Party,” he noted. “In Australia, as in America, Murdoch has campaigned for decades in support of tax cuts for the wealthy, killing action on climate change and destroying anything approximating multiculturalism.”

” According to a report from PR Week, Baylor officials placed a mole within several support groups for sexual assault survivors as a way to control their messaging and keep the university from looking bad.

Baylor currently faces a Title IX lawsuit from 10 anonymous former students for their alleged serial mishandling of sexual assault cases over the past decade, and Baylor football players have been accused of committing 52 rapes over four years. …”

” When these groups organized on campus to comfort each other and demand action from former chancellor Kenneth Starr, “[Burchett] would coordinate with them, befriend them, and pretend he was helping them organize vigils and demonstrations [about] sexual assault,” the source added.

Burchett would pass on what he learned to school officials, the communications department, and Ketchum, the source added. In an email described to PRWeek, Kevin Jackson, VP of student life and Burchett’s supervisor, said the director of student activities was “adept at this kind of thing.” …”

“… Burchett also tried to shape the group’s public statements, encouraged it not to say Baylor “failed” the survivors or Baylor “failed” to create a safe environment, two sources said. When the group was preparing to send a letter to Starr, Burchett suggested edits. …”

A cool couple of tools I found hunting for some machine learning stuff.

shapecatcher.com : This one allows you to draw a symbol and it will attempt to find the unicode value for the symbol. It actually produces the top so many matches. So, when I drew:

It gave these as the top three out of a bunch of guesses:

If you take the hex value without the leading 0, and put it between and ;, you can use it here: φ

The other tool is similar, but it generates the LaTex code for the drawn symbol: detexify.kirelabs.org. For those of you into machine learning, you can download the training data from this site.

Someone had put up the Tom Perez tweet about changes to the rules for the DNC for candidates running for office. After having read them, I don’t see anything that would have improved Bernie’s chances for winning. More primaries would actually make it harder for him, I think. Interesting evolution of Beto O’Rourke’s video releases: still always (or most-always) shot from behind to show the audience as the focus of the candidate’s speechifying: but now the audiences are filling larger venues (vs. the smaller, town-hall/county-courthouse-type meetups he’s been featuring before) - I’m guessing that by November, we’ll be seeing Beto in front of stadiums-full of folks. Good, subtle messaging there: I hope he can keep up the good work til Election Day.

She put what I was feeling about this situation into words extremely well.

While I try to curate my Twitter follows to the point I don’t see a LOT of this, I have unfortunately been exposed to some folks on the left behaving boorishly on the topic of McCain’s passing. What Rachel said applies to them just as well.

There are some out there (mostly in the Bernie Bro wing it seems, but not limited to them) who seem to think that the way to beat Trump is to be just as nasty and obnoxious as he and his sycophants. I couldn’t disagree with this more.

Dark stuff. This is a very long Buzzfeed article about the dark past of St. Joseph’s in Burlington, Vermont.
We Saw Nuns Kill Children: The Ghosts of St. Joseph’s Catholic Orphanage

This reminds me of a question I had about a different part of the world. I was a student at Cornell when I first studied the Spanish Civil War in any depth. I remember being puzzled at the savagery of the attacks on the Catholic Church. I could understand the rage against brutal bosses and arrogant aristocrats, but priests and nuns? I had never had much contact with the Catholic Church, though I did know enough to scoff when my goober relatives attacked them as heathen papists. Then the pedophile scandals started. That was decades ago now, but the revelations just keep coming. How much worse is it going to get? How far does it go?
I really suspect that many other churches, especially Evangelicals, are no better. They are just smaller and lack a unified global presence. There is more of a tendency to see each episode of brutality and abuse as an isolated incident, yet we see one such incident after another.

It’s disturbing stuff. The Catholic Church was a big part of my family for many years. Dad’s Uncle was a priest and he and the aunts/uncles all went to paroichal school. My cousins and I otoh were brought up non denomination without the pressures of religion. I think this stuff happens in all faiths but the RCC is so organized.

Evangelical churches are no better than the Catholic churches, taken as an entire collective, but the media impact is much less because the monstrosity is spread across the various denominations. There is no one single chain of command that has to own up to the heinous crimes committed by some of the ministry.

re: #131 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

Interesting.

My ex and I talked about the PA Grand Jury Report today. She was raised catholic to the core - all the way through catholic college. But never saw the same shit because her father converted to marry. His Baptist upbringing left him more than able to stand up to the priests and their power trips.

My mother was very similar and my father had been willing to convert for her as well. But when my mother went to talk to the priest about how to do that, he launched into a screed about how evil she was to date a “LUTHERAN” boy. She turned around and walked out for 30 years. He would later be murdered by someone we all wondered if he’d abused.

I would grow up only seeing that church at it’s smells and bells best - Christmas and Easter. But I listened to the stories I heard. I went with the Anglican tradition - the Episcopal church - to have the ritual and the Reformation. I still think that was a damn good choice compared to the alternatives.

I hate saying it but their own prejudice against Muslims definitely colored their reaction there. But many were equally silent when Trump mocked McCain for being captured. I mean I’m glad these people are outraged by Trump’s behavior here. They should be. But maybe they should actually listen to liberals and Democrats in the future instead of dismissing us and falling head over heels for a fat fraud who has never shown any indication that he understands or respects what the men and women who serve this country sacrifice. He’s a coward. He’s always been a coward. TBH I was honestly surprised that someone like him got as much support from military members and families as he did. I mean I get that they lean conservative and many unfortunately have their own prejudices but come the hell on guys, this guy literally said he “liked people who don’t get captured.” Or how about how he was happy to get a Purple Heart. I think there are a few more variables that may factor in.
Trump looks weaker now.
Any benefit of the doubt they gave is just exhausted.
Other incidents just didn’t rate the same - Kazir Kahn & La David Johnson for example.
The amount of support for McCain, peer pressure.
Generals and Intelligence Officers breaking protocol to speak out, even on matters unrelated to the military directly.

So, thinking about Illeshiem FRG once again and the Storck Barracks/Illesheim Kaserne once again made me remember the old M8 Greyhound armored car out front. Great little scout vehicle but definitely in the “if they see you, you’re fucked” category. Well, usually.

Here’s a little tale from the Battle of the Bulge about a Greyhound, a Tiger and an Oddball moment in history…

Iunno. I feel like the pineapple might be effective at cutting the fattiness of the duck. But, I’m a guy that really likes sweet over savory. I was raised on KC-style barbecue, North Carolina can eat a bag of dicks.

Exactly. And that bit of reality is where the (in)famous sequence in “Kelly’s Heroes” comes from. Oddball’s tank and his paint rounds give us humour appropriate to the late 60’s but the idea that a much lesser vehicle could ambush a Tiger? Damn straight, skippy.

Wikipedia has an entry that starts with: “Coonass, or Coon-ass, is a term for a person of Cajun ethnicity. Some consider the term an ethnic insult, even though many Cajuns use the word in regard to themselves.[citation needed]” (I love the “citation needed” part.)

So my daughter-in-law, an English teacher and published author, is annoyed with me.

She gifted my youngest daughter’s baby with a teddy bear. She explained that the teddy bear had belonged to her mother (now deceased), then her brother and then it was hers. She passed it down to her two kids, now too old to want the bear. Since she and my son don’t plan on more kids, she wanted my daughter’s baby to have it.

It was a touching moment, until I suggested it was a family bear-loom.

Ah well. She’ll forgive me. ;-)

Tonight’s Dumb BernieBro Trick (tm) comes from the home office in Syracuse, New York, where Our Revolution-backed Dana Balter is the Democratic candidate against GOoPer John Katko. Nate Silver has this race leaning to Katko by three percent based on his models, but Balter’s mighty support from Vermont’s junior senator has boosted him to…

a 15-point chasm, according to Siena College. This compares to a 2-point deficit for a generic candidate.

I have nothing against NC specifically. I carry a mild grudge against the Deep South in general for the whole lingering Confederate dickbag thing that seems to be making a resurgence these days, but otherwise, they make good food and they talk real cute and some of them are purdy.

Hey, my origins are from the heart of wingnut country. Fishfolk live in the middle of Indiana, they probably even voted for Dickhead Mike Pence (although as far as I’m aware, even they were sick of him by the time 2016 rolled around, and Pence was about to get his ass so thoroughly kicked he would still be in orbit).

Rand Paul: Vaccines Can Lead to ‘Mental Disorders’

Republican Sen. Rand Paul is standing by his statement that most vaccinations should be “voluntary,” telling CNBC that a parent’s choice not to vaccinate a child is “an issue of freedom.”

In an interview with the network Monday, Paul said that vaccines are “a good thing” but that parents “should have some input” into whether or not their children must get them.

And he gave credence to the idea - disputed by the majority of the scientific community - that vaccination can lead to mental disabilities.

“I have heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines,” he said.

I had a FB exchange with a FOAF (both Trumpsters) — wherein I called Herr Trump a vindictive coward and a petty little man. The FOAF used LOL and tit-for-tat to describe Trump’s disgraceful handling of the official response to McCain’s death. These deplorables are vile beyond words.
