Trump should be happy. The new German Nazi party AfD has won enough votes in the Bavarian election today to get seats in parliament for the first time and weaken Merkel’s govening coalition.

I’ve read some of Max Boot’recent stuff, and it’s good that he’s gone back and looked at what he ignored/accepted/took part in, and is now seeing what we were all saying.

But, you know, so many of the NeverTrumpers (the real ones, the ones that didn’t return to the fold over Kavanaugh) think they deserve not only a seat at our table, but that we should do what they tell us.

It reminds me of the scene at the end of Top Gun, when Ice says, “You can be my wingman any time!”

And Maverick says, “Bullshit. You can be mine.”

Back with another observation of “Why television is scaring Republicans.” I’m still mostly fixed on ads because they’re still more adventurous with changing norms than most TV shows. My newest observation is this: Black women in commercials are not wearing white women hair. It’s not straight. Sometimes, it’s really big. And white guys are still marrying them, though I hope the guy in the PetSmart or PetCo commercial realizes that he comes in second to the dog.

I think what Max Boot was complaining about was that he got attacked after he’d said he was no longer backing Trump by the left. I’m personally not going to waste time attacking people who change their mind, unless they revert, but I think they deserve a whole lot of criticism if they start trying to do the “you’re lucky to have me” thing. I think the initial response from us should be “Great, the fight’s that way.”

I respect Boot because he’s willing to speak things aloud that are contrary to the conservative canon…which admittedly amounts to catching up with what the rest of us noticed ages ago (The Republican Party is full of Republicans! as driftglass puts it)…and fess up to the holes in his perceptions. Which is the *only* place to start if we want shit to get better.

He’s a contrast with anti anti Trump types like and French and Shapiro, who both refuse to concede that the current situation is a direct development of the past, and consistently insist that liberals are always even more wrong than Trumpian reactionary instincts.

Boot might help bring us a moderate, or at least a sane, conservative bloc. The “both sides are bad (but I’ll never side with liberals)” types complain but ultimately side with Trump because their issues are aesthetic—they prefer empty pomp and snobbery to pettiness and shit-flinging—rather than substantive.

Right. I’ll grant Boot that he sees what it is with conservatism led to Trump being palatable to conservatives. Shapiro & French can’t see that because to use AM’s phrase, conservatism is their religion.

I don’t think I can watch it.

Just reading his comments from it, this thread and last, is too much.

I do get a sense though, it was a bad interview for him because he again showed his ass and his lack of any understanding of simple American civics and politics.

So, big hope it just hurts Republican more and more. More people seeing how ignorant he really is. Proudly. Arrogantly. Ignorant.

I bet the RNC is not real happy about it and might suggest he not do any more of them until mid-November.

But you don’t stop Trump from weighing in. He has to be Trump, unafraid to say outright lies and take back something he just said.

And white guys are still marrying them, though I hope the guy in the PetSmart or PetCo commercial realizes that he comes in second to the dog.

Ad agencies are primarily based in big cities, like NY and LA, so producers are more likely both to see and hire actors to be mixed-race families. For ad work, actors/models usually don’t have to go through a lot of make-up work, so it’s “come as you are” usually. So, if an actor has “big hair,” that could be an advantage during the audition. If the producers are looking for inclusive imagery, hairstyles are one way to go. OTOH, I don’t see a lot of TV commercials or print ads featuring people with elaborate tattoos, piercings or the like. Maybe that’s still too edgy, or maybe it’s the wrong demographic to appeal to.

Multiracial families are really NBD now, even in the hinterlands. Even so, couples still have to put up with a lot of shit from strangers within their own racial/ethnic group. I read an article the other day about Asian women getting a lot of abuse from Asian men, because the women have white or black husbands/boyfriends. It’s not just white supremacists who are revolted by people who marry “out of their race.”

Facebook accuses RWN of fraud: Buying adverts to push their BS stories, then creating sockpuppet accounts to click on the ads for those articles (making money) and driving those articles up on Facebook.

Deadly blast hits female candidate’s rally in Afghanistan

A bombing attack hit an electoral rally in Afghanistan as a female candidate was about to give a speech. The Taliban had decried the upcoming parliamentary vote and several politicians have recently been killed.

At least 14 people were killed and over 30 wounded when a motorcycle laden with explosives blew up during a campaign rally in Rustaq, north Afghanistan, on Saturday.

“There are a number of wounded people in critical condition,” police spokesman Khalil Aser said.

While Islamist militants are active in the northeast province of Takhar, this is the first major attack in its remote district of Rustaq.

The vehicle exploded around noon local time, when Nazefa Yusoufi Beg, a female candidate running for a seat in the national parliament, was preparing to address her supporters. She survived the attack, according to a local official.

Nazefa Yusoufi Beg is one of 417 women vying for seats in the 249-member chamber, alongside 2,148 male candidates. The elections are set for October 20.

Italy ends beacon ‘Riace model’ for migrant integration

dw.com

The mayor has been arrested for alleged misuse of public funds and arranging sham marriages. He denies that. The conservative Interior Minister wants to redistribute immigrants across Italy, which would destroy Riace.

The Riace model has been hailed across the world as an effective method of dealing both with refugees and reviving flagging towns. In Riace, some 300 migrants were invited to stay. They rebuilt abandoned houses, learned local crafts and business, and opened new businesses in the village.

Fortune Magazine hailed Riace’s mayor as one of the world’s most effective leaders in a list.

Looking like the end of the road for Sears:

Sears Holdings plans to file for bankruptcy protection after midnight in the East Coast, culminating the collapse of what was once America’s largest retailer, people familiar with the situation tell CNBC.

As part of the bankruptcy plan, Sears will immediately close roughly 150 of its stores, people familiar with the matter have said. It has approximately 700 stores, one of the people said.

It is unclear how the closures would impact Sears’ workers, which totaled roughly 90,000 in February 2018.

cnbc.com

The day has finally come: Sears is going bankrupt.

The once-dominant retail icon — whose Sears and Kmart chains have shrunk drastically and grown dilapidated after more than a dozen years under the control of billionaire Eddie Lampert — was expected to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection by late Sunday or early Monday.

After nearly a week of intense negotiations, Sears’ lenders were close to agreeing to supply a $500 million loan to keep shelves stocked and employees paid through the holidays, according to sources close to the situation.

It’s unclear, however, whether the iconic retail chain will survive beyond that, after getting whittled down to about 700 locations. That’s versus more than 3,500 before Lampert, a hedge-fund manager, merged the retailers in 2005 to form Sears Holdings and made himself chairman and chief executive.

“Sears has been under a hail of fire for some time with a lot of questions about its CEO and his real intentions,” said Eric Schiffer, chief executive of Patriarch, an LA-based private equity firm.

“I think it’s unlikely that it’ll survive beyond the filing. They haven’t figured out how to merchandise.”

Under the expected reorganization plan, about 150 stores are expected to close immediately while Lampert weighs a bid to keep 300 locations running beyond Christmas, sources said. The fate of 250 additional stores will hang in the balance while the rest are shuttered by early next year.

Yep. I used to work at a Sears store up in Vancouver, WA for several years in the 1990’s; it was one of the stores slated to be closed later this year. With this apparently impending bankruptcy filing, I wonder if it’ll be one of the 150 stores that will be closed immediately.

I’ll check later today when I get back from work.

Afghanistan is such a mess. There are people trying to bring it into the 21st century, like Fereshteh Forough and her @CodetoInspire school, and @sahareducation, while at the same time Islamist militants are trying to push it back into the 8th century. The government is corrupt, and the US military presence (like every other foreign presence in history) has made little headway against the rebel factions.

See also, Pakistan.

Afghanistan is where armies go to die.

It has always been thus.

Look at the eyes. I knew it, they’re lizard people.

The lighting is not the best. I’ve noticed a trend among YouTubers and some photogs to use circle lights around their lenses, so you can see bright little circles in the eyes of the persons being photographed. I find it distracting. Here the Time photog’s lighting gives MBS’s eyes a lizard- or cat-like look. I wonder if that was deliberate.

My theory is it kind of comes with their success. Over the last few decades they have had so much success redistributing wealth to the 1%, that to keep pushing it even further, as their donors demand, they have to go to greater extremes to keep their base angry and scared enough to keep voting for more tax cuts for the rich and lower incomes for everyone else, to the point that they are now basically fascists. They can’t admit that a civilized country needs an equitable healthcare system or breathable air or that corporations have obligations that go beyond maximizing their share price in the next quarterly report, because that would mean their donors would have to fork over some dough to help make those things happen.

I tweeted yesterday that the 1% now wants more than tax breaks. They want the government to pay them money (with tax rebates and deductions), so they can become even richer than before. And the present administration is essentially stealing from the US Treasury to line their own pockets.

Of course. We see it again and again that state governments have to promise not only special tax breaks but tax payer funded goodies such as new stadiums and other infrastructure to lure businesses to their states. And of course the GOP has cut IRS funding to the bone to prevent them from investigating tax cheats like Cohen, Manafort, Trump and Kushner.

Uh huh. Right.

Previously, they argued that people cooking with wood or coal fires caused Beijing’s egregiously bad pollution. Someone must have decided the people weren’t buying that lie anymore.

Here’s a true fact. When the PRC was created, Mao and the Politburo had to decide how to keep the people warm in the winter time. It was decided that everyone above an arbitrary east-west line would receive free coal in the wintertime, while everyone south of that line would have to fend for themselves. This demarcation still exists, though in modified form. Homes and buildings in the north have central heating, usually electric or hot water heating, while southern buildings do not, even though it can get pretty chilly in the wintertime. Newer buildings may have heat pumps/Air conditioners, though.

People in the rural areas still heat their homes and cook with wood or coal, because electricity is for them too expensive. People in urban areas heat with electricity, directly or indirectly with hot water. And most of China’s electricity is still from coal-fired power plants. Plus, buildings are not insulated — at all — so the electrical demand is even heavier.

End result: egregious air pollution in the wintertime, exacerbated by the gajillions of private cars and other vehicles with no real emission controls plying the streets, and usually idling in massive traffic jams.

But yeah, it’s hairspray causing the problem.

Also, PM2.5 does not come from aerosols, but from industrial sources, construction, and coal-fired power plants. So, it’s even more horsehit from the party mouthpiece.

I moved from a fairly small city in a largely rural area in southern China, where the air was generally pretty clean, aside from the ever-present airborne dust from construction and mining sites. We got a fair amount of rain, though, which controlled the dustiness. Now I live in a large urban area in the north, and last winter there were a few days when I could literally not see the buildings across the street from my flat. The air quality index was something like 500+. Long-time residents told me 500+ AQI days used to be more common, so I guess that’s an improvement??

Yet another reason I don’t plan to stay here much longer.

The secret of US conservatism is that it is continuously and cynically revising the definitions and standards of “traditions” and “values” which supposedly are the fixed points in their moral universe. The things they insist are immutable, even God-given, they dock and deform to serve the momentary needs of their in-group.

To appear moral they need to accuse their opponents of total depravity. To appear honest even as they hustle they have to float a narrative in which the other side axiomatically dishonest, incapable of truth.

The scary thing is, we’re now generations deep into the kayfabe, and there are less pure cynics and more individuals whose epistemology is simply veracity is a product of correct allegiance. Many of these billionaires really imagine that they know everything about everything—religion, government, economics, biology, social science—and are completely shielded from contradiction…indeed, they can literally buy a network of intellectuals and culture-leaders to create a superficial appearance of validity. In turn, there’s a vast body of end-users of culture that don’t know how to question the assumptions they’ve been raised to think of as a priori true, who feel threatened by skepticism or critique.

The problems aren’t even ideological, they’re the way that all ideas are processed and categorized…hence the homologous features between the poor logic and bad faith of the current reactionaries (nominally conservatives informed by Protestant Christianity) and that of historical movements with radically different ideas (Communisim, monarchism, theocracy) that reasoned the same “can’t be wrong, can only be wronged” way.

What we’re watching is a macro version of the same oscillation between cynicism and earnest faith that convinces a cult leader that God wants him to bang everyone’s wife…and subsequently the fractioning of the congregation into those that wholly embrace and are willing to enforce the new “God wants me to fuck your wife” revelation, those that will abide with it and suppress their doubt, those that will argue until silenced, and those that will depart.

Much much more scary than the “drink the Kool Aid” version of Jonestown where everyone is blindly obedient, there’s the reality that there were armed enforcers willing to shoot the uncooperative, believers willing to shout down and berate the doubtful, brave folks standing to argue with Jim Jones, people that died running, and terrified and lost people who didn’t want to die but felt trapped.

My impression is that it might be as flawed an endeavor as the “new math” in the 1960’s. It’s not that changes are not needed — but we seem to have problems in designing a program that achieves the objectives.

Go look at Prager U materials on Youtube. The underlying message is that authority can’t be validly questioned, and “truth” emanating from authority can’t be tested or added to. History, literature, art…the canon is good (tautologically) because it is the canon, and because the canon justifies the status quo (which cannot be questioned).

In effect, all knowledge emanates from authority, and authority is determined by affiliation rather than any kind of testing/probing of quality. Shakespeare is good because he is part of the Western classical canon, not part of the Western classical canon because he had distinct features that made him stand out and thus be “good.”

And this canon cannot be expanded, so most of 20th century literature is excluded, much as the Bible cannot be expanded to include other “revelations” by later writers.

This was the same argument against Aristotelianism during the Counter-Reformation. Aristotle was part of Catholic dogma, courtesy of Thomas Aquinas, and his science was authoritative. This was also part of the medieval mindset. Change scares many people, not least among people in authority, and relying on “tried and true” lines of thought offers them comfort.

Prager, Ron Dreher, and other so-called conservative intellectuals all want to return to a mythical Middle Age Europe, when (they believe) everyone knew their place in society and everyone was beholden to the people above them, and no one dare question the established order. Such a Middle Age Europe never existed, of course.

I think in education — just like guns, transportation, emissions limits, etc — the best and most sensible and most cost-effective policies are highly dependent on the population density at your location.

NYC’s school district has about 900,000 kids. If your kid has special talents or special challenges that only 1/10 of 1% has… that’s enough to justify a whole school with curriculum and facility and staff specifically designed just for him. So there’s a special school for musical prodigies, one for math geniuses, one for kids who are quick to learn multiple languages, and one for kids with cystic fibrosis or the severely autistic or pregnant girls or trans kids. In Oklahoma, if your kid is one in a thousand, he’s the only one for 100 miles and it’s absurd to expect the school to make special arrangements. Do it yourself. The Oklahoma school has to be geared to the average and typical.

Trump is very impressed with how “firm” King Salman’s denial of involvement in Khashoggi’s disappearance is: “The denial was not only a denial, it was a very firm denial.”

He would surely love to see the standard of proof to be “firm denial” because denying is his only real skill.

Right wingers have moved the goalposts now that Warren’s DNA results show her Native ancestry is from someone 6 to 10 generations back. Yes, she does provably have Native American ancestry, invalidating their earlier disbelief in her claims. Now, they say the small percentage of Native DNA proves she was milking it to gain some advantage somehow. Of course, the facts are she did not, as the Boston Globe investigation proves.

Case in point. James Dumbass Woods is also carping on the results, but I’ll spare you.

You know who did lie about his heritage. Trump. And Trump’s father would have known that his father(Trump’s grandfather) was German and not Swedish. She didn’t do shit. She stated she was part Native American which is true. We grew up hearing stories that we were Swiss-German. Turns out there’s a small bit of truth to that. I don’t see anything wrong with what Warren or anyone else who believes family lore does. She wasn’t doing it for an unfair advantage. She was doing it because it’s part of her family story.

What that hack Rubin doesn’t get is that people were ragging on her for years about it and she decided to finally prove that she was in fact of Native American heritage and now they’re saying “Oh it was so far back that it doesn’t matter.” Well it certainly mattered to Trump when he used it to attack her at his rallies. Which is what it seems unfortunately Warren’s paternal grandparents were doing with Warren’s mother. Anyhow my rule of thumb as an amateur genealogist is the longer one has been in the country, the more likely they are to have some surprises like this. And you can’t go based simply on what census’s say. I have a 1910 census with my maternal grandmother’s father in it and he is described as mulatto. Now I wouldn’t be ashamed at all if Great Grandpa was part black but Great Grandpa was from northeastern Slovakia where I still don’t think there are any people of African descent today. His grandniece though did marry an African-American though so I have third cousins who are African-American and Rusyn.

I haven’t been on lately since I’ve been spending time with an old friend who is in the area. I breached him about possibly looking into his family. I usually ask people I help out with to give me the names of their parents or grandparents so I have someone who will show up in written records online. Did that with him and I’m finding tons. It’s interesting. We’re a couple of white guys but our stories are totally different. His is much more British Isles based judging by surnames and not recent immigrant at all and far more rural and southern and midwestern. I meanwhile am more mixed: Irish, Eastern European, German, urban, and eastern based. I did find out that both of our great grandfathers that bear our current surnames worked in banks though.

That’s too bad because being Irish is so much more than just your lineage. It’s about appreciating the culture. Some of the finest Irish writers like Yeats actually came from Anglo-Irish backgrounds. Funny thing happened with me though was I discovered yeah my Great Nana’s mother was born in Scotland but had Irish parents and the place where she was likely born- Coatbridge is considered the “least Scottish part of Scotland” and was full of Irish immigrants. Sociologists often talk about the Scots-Irish but the Irish-Scots are sort of a forgotten note even though there’s a lot of them i.e. Billy Connolly, Sean Connery, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Yeah I’m not fond of Peterson either. I brought up Coulter since I’m far more familiar with her. I think Bill just wants the good stuff that liberalism gives us i.e. relaxed drug laws, free speech, etc but doesn’t want the responsible stuff i.e. sensitivity towards women, PoC, etc.

I’ll trade you a stampeding dog for a whole fucking family of in-laws who cannot shut up or turn off the THREE fucking TVs in the little tiny ass “vacation” house in the Outer Banks I’m at right now. Why are we here? I’m the only one in good enough health to walk more than 20 ft without getting out of breath or complaining that it’s too hard to go anywhere. If I don’t end up in prison, call the Vatican, because that shit will be a miracle.

Maybe you should go for a walk? It pretty much guarantees you’ll lose the annoying family far behind you.

This is a lovely but small 3 bedroom/2 bath cottage but there are nine people here and three dogs and some asshole just gave all the dogs squeaky toys. My in-laws cannot do anything in a timely fashion, it took them 4 HOURS to get groceries and it was 9 before we had dinner. My husband has diabetes, gah, these people are freaking dipshits. I’m trying to figure out how to get out of going on some stupid ferry with them whenever they get ready to leave. Who spends an hour and a half in the shower while people need to get ready too? Gah. Never. Ever. Again. Done.

Trump telling Leslie Stahl “I am the President and you’re not” is not the first time a Republican president has done this.

Bush Thumping His Chest: “I Am The President!” (Crooks and Liars, May 2007)

There can be only one Commander in Chief. In these times crises cannot be managed and wars cannot be waged by committee, nor can peace be pursued solely by parliamentary debate. To the ears of the world, the President speaks for the Nation. While he is, of course, ultimately accountable to the Congress, the courts, and the people, he and his emissaries must not be handicapped in advance in their relations with foreign governments as has sometimes happened in the past.

Gerald R. Ford, State of the Union speech, 1977.

The idea of “I am the President, and you must listen” has gone on with conservatives all my life.

PS: I will miss Sears. The K-mart in Scottsbluff still stands empty after it was closed last year. The idea this schmuck had of “we’ll sell the land under the stores and make money” is like every other libertarian idea: nonsense.

Sorry, I did a lot of reading about brains the last few years. There’s inherent bias in the knowledge acquired.

Maladaptive brain structures come in all varieties. In some, reasoning is an option. In many, any apparent reasoning seems to wear off, or be quickly forgotten. This kind of maladaptive structure is often caused by CTE, which happens in every degree, from mild to severe, from one big blow to the head, or many small ones, or some combination. Nobody should be written off without actual knowledge about what’s going on. CTE can only be diagnosed after death. If there’s life, there’s hope, usually.

Heh, I still remember the Christmas Wishbook - yeah, that was indeed every kid’s dream.

Sad to see it go. Even though today’s filing was a Chapter 11, I doubt Sears will be able to stage a comeback. Earlier this year, The Bon-Ton filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, only for that to be converted to Chapter 7 a few months later. I figure this Chapter 11 was to buy time for the upcoming Christmas shopping season - and once that’s done, it’ll get flipped to a Chapter 7 and be completely liquidated.

And then Sears will have gone the way of Montgomery Ward and other retail giants before them.

The DOJ is calling it “one of the largest internal Postal [thefts] by a Postal Service employee in the history of the US Postal Service,” and it involves 46-year-old Ryan Cortez and what prosecutors say was a massive theft of stamps—more than $630,000 worth—from the Kenner post office where he works. Cortez was arrested Wednesday and charged with misappropriation of postal funds or property. (more)

Conservatives still defending Roy Moore:

crooksandliars.com

Conservative pundit Jen Kerns on Sunday found herself in hot water on Sunday after she defended former Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore (R) against charges of pedophilia.

During a MSNBC panel discussion about how women will vote in the 2018 midterms, columnist Michelle Bernard suggested that white women would not be a reliable voting block for Democrats.

“I am very pessimistic about what we will see happen with the white women’s vote,” Bernard explained, “in terms of are they going to vote Republican or Democrat.”

“Were it not for the vote of black women and women of color, Roy Moore would have been elected in Alabama,” she continued. “Despite very credible charges that indicated that he had engage in pedophilia.”

Bernard went on to suggest that “white women gain power through the proximity that they have to white males, to their husbands, and the vote the same way that their husbands do because it always, somehow favors them.”

“That’s offensive!” Kerns interrupted. (more)

When I was stationed in Spain, Sears was the go-to place for mail order. Montgomery Ward and other large retail outlets would not ship by the US Postal Service, and UPS cannot be used to ship to an FPO, DPO, or APO.

As such, Sears’s catalogue sales had a large brisk business from military personnel stationed overseas or aboard ships.

Today’s version of the Sears catalogue, Amazon, will also ship to a post office, but you have to engage with their customer service people to get them to mark your account as USPS only. (That took me some time here.)

“Trusted traveler interview?”

Suit yourself. I paid $100 and had the “interview” so I could get my NEXUS card, which covers Global Entry, TSA Pre and gets me through the busy land crossings at Buffalo and Detroit in no time flat (sometimes in a matter of seconds while the general crossing lanes are backed up for an hour!)

The “interview,” once you get there, is really just a formality. They’ve already done the background check based on the fairly basic information provided in the application (last ten years of where you’ve lived, where you’ve worked - likely nothing they don’t already know anyway.) They even acknowledge as much in the “interview” - it’s just a chance for them to explain the rules of the program to you and make sure you don’t do anything that would break them.

I’ve probably saved an entire day of my life at border crossings and airport checkpoints already.

YMMV, of course, and no doubt will - I’m sure the border agents at East Bumtwaddle, North Dakota are still going to be curious about the couple in the Smart Car with the two-digit license plate even if you’re flashing a NEXUS card at them.

Lots and lots of people do just fine where “marriage” is not equated to “only sex with me.”

I’m not sure about that … crossing the border from Sarnia, Ontario to Port Huron, Michigan all I got was “thank you for your service.” Didn’t even ask to see my driver’s license or passport. (Never mind a Gold Star Family plate says nothing about my service.)

My objection is not the Nexus card. My objection is having to pay the government any money at all to show you’re a “loyal American.”

TSA is another issue.

Ah… I see where you’re coming from.

I think of the fee (kind of like the passport fee) as more of an administrative thing… it costs to staff the extra lanes and maintain the infrastructure and issue the cards. Ten bucks a year isn’t much, and whatever idealistic fury I might muster about it pretty much evaporates when I’m speeding past a long line of non-NEXUS-card-holders and on my way home instead of sitting in traffic for an hour. That’s where the idealist in me gets kicked to the curb and stomped by my inner pragmatist.

My wife and I have been happily noticing this stuff too, and hoping it means real progress in the country since advertisers are, I assume, careful not to offend more potential customers than they make happy with these ads.

I suppose you could make the argument that “maladaptive brain structures which cause epilepsy makes you a liberal.” Which might explain why conservatives designated us as “feeblemined” for a century and why Christians had us killed.

Only if you can tie this to epilepsy.

We found that greater liberalism was associated with increased gray matter volume in the anterior cingulate cortex

I don’t travel much so I don’t really have much of a say I suppose.

All this goes back to Ronald Reagan’s idea that government services should pay for themselves (fees or fines).

Prior to hyper-libertarianism inserted into government, taxation paid for any such programme the government wanted to provide or implement.

In the example of breezing by everyone who didn’t have a Nexus card, what happens when a significant number of people decide the same as you: Well, I’ll get one of those cards to speed up clearing customs?

Then you get the same lines, but are also paying $15 for the privilege. I don’t know if that will happen, but so-called “life hacks” tend not to stay secret forever.

I’d be happy if my taxes just paid for NEXUS/PreCheck/Global Entry directly… but I also realize that I travel more than the average bear, and I’m happy to pay a little more for something that I use much more frequently than most. I’d be equally happy to do so in taxes, but we live in the time we live in.

In the example of breezing by everyone who didn’t have a Nexus card, what happens when a significant number of people decide the same as you: Well, I’ll get one of those cards to speed up clearing customs?

NEXUS has been around for well over a decade now. It seems to have just enough friction in the process (limited number of enrollment locations) to keep user numbers manageable. If you cross the border by land more than a few times a year, it’s worth the hassle to get the card. If you only do so occasionally, not so much.

If they start to get more pickup on the program, it’s easy enough to balance the load - convert more “all cars” lanes to NEXUS-only and everyone still gets through faster. Sort of how toll lanes on the Thruway here in New York started out with one little EZPass-only lane way over on the side and a half dozen cash lanes, and now the cash lanes are in the minority, where they still exist at all and haven’t been replaced by cashless tolling.

It was a cesspool when thin-skinned Erick ran the place, and it’s a cesspool now. “Conservative” doesn’t just mean “stupid”. It means stupid, mean, dishonest, and cowardly. like old-man Trump.

LOL.

Migraines and epilepsy are related, so we’re in the same club. (I have both.)

Before: She’s a lying liar that lies about being Native American.

After: She’s still a lying liar that lies about being Native American and now racist to boot.

(Also, too: studiously and furiously ignore the repeated “Pocahontas” comments and that Trump straight up challenged her to take a DNA test).

Yes, I believe so. Even if the programming started very early in life. I was raised Catholic. They start as soon as a kid gets out of the hospital (if that’s where they are born). I’m still getting over it. As long as one can read or hear and understand, there’s hope.

As posted before, I too was raised Catholic and Catholic schooled 1st to Senior in High School.

I think I somehow managed to deprogram from the cult right from the first day of school. I always found it all interesting but challenged the thinking from the start. I didn’t always say anything while going through it, but always looked at it all as strange and questioned it all.

As soon as I was out of the family home and going to art college I was free of the dogma of the cult. I have never looked back.

It was a great education though…first class liberal arts college prep. And the nuns taught me in a backhanded way all about passion from the cult side and how they bought in.

It would take me a week of work on vocabulary to give that a proper reading. And that’s just for the abstract and introduction.

Sears, when I was a kid, was THE store to go to at the mall, they had EVERYTHING. And the Christmas catalog? That thing was a kid’s dream. We would go through it again and again every year. It sucks to see what’s happened to it.

I seem to recall buying many 45 records from the bin at Sears in late 60’s and 70’s.

I’ll bet that insight was one of the keys to the personal deprogramming. Plus this, of course:

I always found it all interesting but challenged the thinking from the start.

re: #326 Single-handed sailor

This administration, backed by a Republican full congressional majority, has pumped out more smoke and placed more mirrors up to reflect it all than any administration in US history.

And everyone should have seen it coming. Trump has done this his whole life.

Once everyone learned that he called and wrote media under other names to pump up his own businesses and self it should have been clear nothing he said or did could ever be trusted.

And then Mitch, Paulie and all the others bought in and learned to do it too.

So here we are, the most full-of-shit, untrustworthy government ever.

I hope the smoke has cleared enough and people smash the mirrors to get some of these swamp monsters out of office and others exposed even more.
