Mine is “Demonreach” because I’m a Harry Dresden fan.

Mine is “Turtleon” - turtle-leon kind of wierd naming that my son, when much younger, named my house when he would visit and it would be a turtle space ship commanded by my stuffed turtle toy from when I was a little boy (I’ve had it since I was 4 years old ;) .

His bedroom remains the Pingueon (penguin leon) for the same reason as his spirit critter is Penguin. His is commanded by this half duck/platypus looking stuffy that’s still his best friend.

As an aside, if I ever were to make a rock album, the band name will be the “Penguin Air Force” from all this as well :D I need to find an artist to draw me a Penguin flying a P-40E someday < VBG >

Which reminds me of a post I saw the other night:

A lot of Americans (including me :-() don’t quite understand parliamentary democracy, but usually the head of state — variously called president, king, or queen, is a relatively powerless figurehead

Here’s how to build the British system starting from the American system.

1. Abolish the Electoral College. Instead, pick a very intelligent old German lady, and make a law saying that the President is whoever is her senior surviving descendant. (Much will depend on your choice of German lady, so take care.)

2. Pass another law saying that the Speaker of the House can’t vote except to break a tie. He’s not the head of the majority side; he’s supposed to be a neutral referee.

3. Tell the President that he can’t issue any more executive orders. If he tries to all the same, cut his head off. Repeat as necessary.

4. Strip away a lot of the Senate’s powers. It can no longer initiate bills; all it can do is reject bills written by the House, and it can’t even do that with budgets. (You may also have to threaten to cut heads off at this point if you aren’t careful.)

5. Reduce the time between an election and the elected officials taking office from two and a half months to zero.

6. Stop electing the Senate. Senators are appointed by the House majority. There is no limit to the number of senators. They serve for life. There is no geographical link between a senator and a part of the country.

7. All Cabinet ministers have to be also either senators or congressmen.

8. Abolish the process of confirming government officials by vote.

9. Rename the Senate “the House of Lords”. Rename the President “the King”. Rename the House Majority Leader “the Prime Minister”.

10. Please do not get too curious about who has launch authority over your nuclear weapons. We sincerely are not sure of the answer to this question.

However close protesters are allowed to get to patients who are just trying to get into a clinic, however loud they’re allowed to yell at them, whatever degree of profanity they’re allowed…

That’s what protesters should be allowed to say and do to politicians and pundits who are just trying to enjoy their meal at a restaurant.

Some jurisdictions allow more than others. But that seems a reasonable standard to me; they have an opinion about your actions, and they’re trying to persuade you to make the same choices they would make if they were in your position.

(but Tucker’s house… that does not meet the same standards as a restaurant. Leave the house alone.)

in 2010 he beat alex sink also by 62k votes (2.6m votes for him)

desantis and gillum got just over 4m each

I always had a soft spot for the 40. It was a far better fighter than the post war memories made it out to be after such even better planes as the P-47 & P-51 came along. Saburo Sakai, a Japanese navy ace, claimed at one point that a well handled P-40 was the most dangerous American aircraft. The maneuver we call a “low yo-yo” today would eat an A6M2 for lunch and ask for more.

The Republican groups are challenging the way counties verify signatures on mail-in ballots that are dropped off at the polls on Election Day, according to the complaint obtained by The Arizona Republic.

At stake is an unknown number of ballots that could tip the result of the U.S. Senate race. Just 17,000 votes separated Republican Martha McSally and Democrat Kyrsten Sinema as of Wednesday evening, a cliffhanger that could take days, if not weeks, to call.

The Arizona Republic estimates that there may be more than 600,000 ballots yet to be tallied.

This is a real disgrace — a person of modest means who is elected to office should have access to affordable living quarters in Washington DC

A lot of levels of government are structured in such a way you cannot run for an office and support yourself. State governments are notorious for this (particularly in red states).

I once flirted with the idea of running for the state legislature here. Looking into it, the job pays $12,000 a year. You have to maintain a residence somewhere in Lincoln (400 miles away) while maintaining your residence in your district. The legislature only meets for a few months at most during the year, so if you have a job you also have to quit that.

We had a referendum on the ballot to raise state legislators’ pay a couple years ago, and these issues were addressed. Nevertheless, it went down in flamin’ defeat (but muh taxes - why should some deadhead legislator get paid more than I do, &c).

What that does is set up a situation where only the independently wealthy or those strictly beholden to lobbyists can afford to run for office.

It’s a strange issue - when can you verify the signature, only before election day, or after? Some counties have a policy of only verifying before election day and others allow post-election day verification, which creates an equal protection issue because a vote that would be valid in one county wouldn’t be valid in another under similar circumstances.

This is similar to the Florida 2000 recount where different counties were counting ballots differently.

everything we do is “as of”. we could work into march to close a 12/31 year. they are still 12/31 numbers, not march numbers.

anything received on or before the deadline should be handled exactly the same way. and time shouldnt be a factor.

I clicked on the TC twitter link and got about 15 posts in before James Woods popped up with “if anyone tried that at my house it would be the last 5 seconds of their life” and then it was just psychotic gun nuts all the way down.

Uh, I hate to mention this, but there were 12 people killed in a mass shooting, and it’s not even generating any ripples in the news cycle.

A dozen people dead, and we don’t seem to care. Honestly, I’m disturbed how undisturbed I am by it.

It’s a strange issue - when can you verify the signature, only before election day, or after? Some counties have a policy of only verifying before election day and others allow post-election day verification, which creates an equal protection issue because a vote that would be valid in one county wouldn’t be valid in another under similar circumstances.

This is similar to the Florida 2000 recount where different counties were counting ballots differently.

We really need to come up with a better method for verifying mail in ballots, the problem is that the only foolproof methods like sending in your DNA are also cost prohibitive on the verification end and creepy as fuck. Thumb / fingerprints would work for most everyone who has thumbs and/or fingers but a lot of people who’ve never had a job or legal reason to give the government their fingerprints are going to object. We could put EMV chips in all State issued IDs but that just compounds the accessibility issues of ID based voting, and only works if there’s a moon shot effort to make sure everyone gets the required ID & reader at no cost to themselves, which means the government has to pay through the nose and legitimizes the added hurdle of needing an ID to vote instead of just register.

Most internet based solutions are all pretty much garbage from an accessibility and security standpoint, and again, it’s pretty difficult to prove you’re “you” over the internet so that’s really no better than subjective signature matching. A facial recognition system currently isn’t anywhere near reliable and instantly becomes an Orwellian nightmare, but since law enforcement is deploying FR anyway that might be the most feasible long term option from a tech standpoint.

True :/ It seems the only time they do generate ripples is when there’s something distinctive about the shooting (e.g. Parkland = worst high-school shooting, Pittsburgh = worst attack against Jewish Americans).

The most disturbing part of this latest was seeing that some of the survivors of this also survived Paddock’s shooting in Vegas.

I think it’s just a combination of signature verification and “not being enormous pedantic assholes about it.”

It’s that last part that’s crucial and basically impossible to legislate.

Signature matching is also ageist and ableist as fuck. I mean, how do you properly make sure that people who have severe arthritis or neuromuscular conditions are treated fairly?

As a graphic artist, can I say a site like that really bugs me?

It just doesn’t seem fair to the artists as far as what they are making.

What it does is make some artists that are really hurting end up working for peanuts in my opinion. A good logo or illustration can take hours. And that is for the winner of the contest, if I understand how it works. What do the people that don’t win get?

At least the hired designers get a decent pay day. The contest just seems unfair.

And I know, I’ve been hungry and worked hours and hours to make a hundred bucks. Sometimes ending up working for less than minimum wage.
