Funny Interview With Sacha Baron Cohen on Pranking Politicians

Humor • Views: 34,337

YouTube

Sacha talks about ‘voting’ in the midterm election, pranking politicians like former Vice President Dick Cheney, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher and former Rep. Jason Spencer, upsetting conservatives in Arizona with his plans to build a mega mosque, and needing a bullet proof clipboard – all for his very funny show ‘Who is America?’

Even though this was a WWI memorial event, I wonder how many non-Canadians are going to catch the “Dieppe” reference?

BTW, according to this diary at Daily KosLink, Trudeau’s “umbrella” remarks seem to have actually been made at a Dieppe-raid memorial last year.
I’m sure the sentiments are the same today - but this seems not - despite its aptness - to be a direct riposte to Trump’s absence. Too bad.

Totally CL’ing it here… but the last thread a couple of hours ago ended with what I think was some bad math about the Senate and SOMEONE IS WRONG ON THE INTERNET and I’m a couple of beers in the bag so let’s go at it:

We entered this cycle at 49 D/51 R in the Senate.

We lost 3 D seats that flipped R (Donnelly, McCaskill, Heitkamp), which gets it to 46 D. One incumbent D (Nelson) is on the bubble.

They gained those three seats but lost one R seat that flipped D, so they’re at 51 R right now. Two R seats (AZ and MS) are on the bubble.

If Sinema wins AZ, we’re at 47 D/51 R.

If Nelson holds FL, we’re at 48 D/51 R.

If (a HUGE) if, we somehow win the MS runoff… that’s still 49 D/51 R and it would take not just Murkowski but a second Republican to get to 51/49 D. Which seems hellaciously unlikely.

Am I missing something?

Dieppe was a fucking meat grinder, a planning and logisical clusterfuck of monumental proportions. However, it was a very hard lesson that made the D-Day invasion and an eventual Allied victory ultimately possible.

But yeah as that author gets at, there’s something that frankly has always rubbed me the wrong way about South Park and its approach to hot button issues that I’ve never felt with other satires. I mean I do find Manbearpig funny but at the same it definitely got climate change believers all wrong and they get a lot of issues wrong even if I find the spoofing funny. And for libertarians I don’t get why they seemed to have a problem with Christopher Reeve’s stem cell advocacy.

These are people whose only care is looking fashionable, not what is appropriate for the occasion. Such as this past 9/11, where the weather in D.C. was wet and miserable, so they sent out a picture from the year before and claimed it was taken that very morning before Donny and Mel departed for PA.

I found the photos of Macron and Merkel today very moving. Their two nations were at war so for much of recent history. I think that’s what makes Merkel such a great leader. She doesn’t hold on to Germany’s past. She instead wants a better Germany for her descendants and she’s done that.

Yes, Belleau Wood was near the shores of the Marne River. It was in the French forests of Belleau Wood that the United States Marines earned their legendary nickname “Teufelshunde” - “Devil Dogs” - for their tenacity and ferocity in combat.

Reading Wikipedia, and this spot stands out, in the evening/night of 6 June 1918:

One of the most famous quotations in Marine Corps history came during the initial step-off for the battle when First Sergeant Dan Daly, a recipient of two Medals of Honor who had served in the Philippines, Santo Domingo, Haiti, Peking and Vera Cruz, prompted his men of the 73rd Machine Gun Company forward with the words: “Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?”

He likely won’t. The media’s just taking the White House at their word that rain “kept him away” because Marine One couldn’t get in and the SS couldn’t throw together a motorcade on short notice. The surgeons’ descriptions of what a high-powered rifle shot does to the human body is just chilling. Organs get shredded so bad that there’s nothing left to stitch together.

Gun humpers somehow imagine that a bullet leaves a tiny hole that can be stitched up no problem once you pull out the bullet buried a couple inches under the skin. “He’ll be back on his feet in no time!” Reality is quite different.

I think that’s why I get mad at gun nuts so much. They’re so fucking insensitive about the damage guns especially ones like the AR-15 can do in such a quick time. It’s why I wanted to go off on DF several times when he engaged in gun pedantic bullshit. Indeed, he who was lashed to the rigging not once, but TWICE, in the course of the Battle of Mobile Bay. Mainly out of a concern from the crew that he might fall out of the rigging and get hurt, and they respected him so much that they couldn’t let that happen at a critical point in the battle.

re: #89 wheat-dogg

The surgeons’ descriptions of what a high-powered rifle shot does to the human body is just chilling. Organs get shredded so bad that there’s nothing left to stitch together.

Gun humpers somehow imagine that a bullet leaves a tiny hole that can be stitched up no problem once you pull out the bullet buried a couple inches under the skin. “He’ll be back on his feet in no time!” Reality is quite different.

Hollywood has a big part in that, portraying heroes as able to take single or multiple gunshots and keep moving, with the only thing necessary at the end being a few stitches and some time to “heal up.”

Then you have Chamberlain’s speech to the 20th Maine. That subplot of Killer Angels was my favorite even though it was the most fictional of all the stories in Shaara’s book given the character of Kilrain whose speech on what justice is one of my favorite monologues in literature. Even better since it’s said with a Northern Ireland accent not that different from my own third grandfather would have had.
What I’m fighting for is to prove I’m a better man than the others. There’s many a man worse than me, and some better. But I don’t think race or country matters a damn. What matters is justice. And that’s why I’m here. I’ll be treated as I deserve, not as my father deserved.

It also is why so many are eager to be the good guy with the gun which is noble on the surface but so much naivete goes into that thought. I recall there being a CC carrier at the Giffords shooting who considered bringing out his gun but realized immediately that it would create more chaos for the Tucson PD.

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned, but Simena’s lead in Arizona is just short of 30,000.

The Arizona Republic estimates there are 260,000 ballots still to be counted in the state. The number for Maricopa County is 198,000, where, so far, Sinema has been winning by 3.5 percentage points.

While McSally’s vote deficit grew, Republicans took aim at the election process. In a statement Saturday, the National Republican Senatorial Committee attacked Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes, a Democrat, saying he “has been using his position to cook the books for Kyrsten Sinema.”

The Arizona Republican Party noted Saturday that it had filed a public-records request Saturday of Fontes and alleged “questionable and possibly illegal decisions made by Adrian Fontes, including opening voter centers for non-emergencies the weekend before the election, and curing ballots in the general, but not the primary election.”

Just like in the rest of the country, the difference is urban/suburban vs rural. Simena is up about 95k in urban/suburban areas, McSally is up 61k in the rural areas.

Yeah, I suppose. My snark meter is slightly broken right now. Must be the cold and snow.

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned, but Simena’s lead in Arizona is just short of 30,000.

You joke, but if you were to dig deeply enough into the derp underground, you would probably find this theory espoused by someone. There is nothing new under the sun, as it were.

I’m not joking, that basically exactly what I’ve seen them say.

There’s still about a quarter million ballots to be counted, but almost 200k of them are from Maricopa County, which is Phoenix. It’s also where Simena was serving in the House, so she’s been up by about 3.5% there. So it’s likely over. Thankfully, McSally herself has not been indulging in the crazy.

Yeah she’s acting better than Scott is in FLA. But yeah I think this one is over.

I heard she’s planning to run for Kyl’s (McCain) seat if she loses this one. Probably does her no good to burn bridges.

Wouldn’t surprise me. I don’t like her but the little I know suggests she’s a little less reckless than others but I think losing this one would hurt her chances and rally the right wingers like Ward and Arpaio who ran against her for this one but then again she did considerably better than them.

Whereas Scott has no fallback if the FL recount turns against him.

Hmmm. Wonder where he’d fit in. Don’t think he’s a lawyer so AG would be unlikely and SoIs are usually from out West.

problem is, in the hate crazed GOP, not bitching, lying and screaming is seen as not embracing the GOP line… McSally is already getting grief from GOP insiders for not remonstrating more fully…

go figure…

Amalthea's Shadow  Nov 10, 2018 • 8:36:21pm

Just stepping in to say hello to everyone! I had to take a bit of an extended break from all internet activities. For those of you who know anything about depression, you know that it’s a bitch of a climb out of a bad bout. But I’m on the other side again, and back to my feisty and sassy self. It’s funny how much my attitude got even better once I started reading election returns. I’ve been a politics junkie for forty five years or more; and even though I didn’t pay close attention in the run up to election day for mental health reasons; I am actually encouraged by the results so far.
So I’m hoping everyone here is well? Still snarky I hope? I have missed the best group in the blogosphere.

He actually was a lawyer. And technically, you don’t need to be a lawyer to be AG. Though the AG is almost always a lawyer, or at least holds a JD.

Right that’s why I said unlikely but I didn’t know he was a lawyer. Assumed just a businessman. But yeah I can’t remember the last AG who wasn’t a lawyer.

RFK is probably the closest I can think of. He had a LLB from Virginia, and as far as I know, never practiced law.

I had to double check. He worked for the DOJ for a couple years in the early 50s, then for Stevenson and the Senate McCellen Committee. But apparently it was a controversial choice because he never had court room work when his brother nominated him.
