Sufficient unto the day...  Feb 7, 2019 • 10:16:44pm

re: #127 Mattand

Getting caught up on the day’s news regarding AMI and Bezos.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t blackmail illegal? Like, call in the cops and FBI and have someone arrested legal? Is the Enquirer doing this because they got immunity from Muller, and think they’re untouchable?

I’m still trying to wrap my head around this. I know we live in insane times, but Jesus Christ; a large media corporation trying to blackmail one of the world’s richest men into shutting down said man’s newspaper investigations?

What the fuck am I missing here?

Yes, it’s illegal.
No, it’s not because they got immunity. This probably voids the immunity deal, and is AT LEAST not covered under the current deal.
And it also leaves the SDNY really annoyed with Pecker and AMI…this is a bad idea. Like invading Russia in the winter bad idea.

But the thing you’re missing is that is the Enquirer’s SOP, and has been for years or even decades. This is how they roll. But Bezos is secure enough to say “fuck you, go for it, in fact, I’ll write the story for you”.

There’s a roadside display of trilobite fossils (actually, reproductions) in Hunan province, near where I used to work. It’s near an important stratigraphic reference site. Anyway, some trilobites were teeny tiny, smaller than ants. Others were as big as dinner plates.

Steve Bannon, Kris Kobach plot to privatize construction of Trump’s border wall

An FAQ page for the new group asserts that it is “presently working with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol experts and other U.S. border security service professionals” to target areas for a wall, which would rely on the consent of landowners. “The company will build the wall mile-by-mile in strategic locations based on a variety of factors. We will build as much wall as we can based on feasibility, land use, and funding,” it continues.

Again: if Trump had been serious about the wall and had intended it as anything other than a symbol and rallying point, he would have commissioned a planning study including design proposals, engineering and environmental reports, legal issues, and of course a budget and timetable.

For all his claims of having experience with large-scale construction projects, he seems pretty damn clueless about how to approach one.

I’m not going to directly link the story from Brietbart, but you can Google the headline “Trump Indicates End of ‘Hire American’ Policy, May Invite More Foreign Workers”

Here’s the first couple of paragraphs;

President Donald Trump suggested that he is ready to ditch his Inauguration Day promise of a “Hire American” economic policy — even though thousands of auto workers are being laid off, millions of Americans do not have jobs, and many millions of Americans cannot get better-paying jobs.
The huge policy shift in favor of employers and investors is emerging after Congress blocked his border wall and his border security reforms, and after the GOP-led Congress passed Trump’s tax cut.

“It is fair to say that the President is abandoning his Hire American policy,” said Mark Krikorian, director of the Center for Immigration Studies.

The comments are, as usual, psychotic.

Heh…..his businesses are probably running short on staff after having recently fired the illegal immigrants who worked for him.

The DISadvantage is that once we let that genie out of the bottle, every last admin that has a Washington trifecta and an unfavourable SCOTUS will expand and pack IT. But the Rs have really given us very little choice unless we can impeach the Trump Injustices and convict ‘em.

The GOP already set a precedent by sitting on their hands for a year and denying Obama his nominee

Some news from Thailand, and a thread worth reading. One of the royal princesses has been nominated to be prime minister, the first member of the Thai royal family to possibly serve in government. It would be like Princess Kate running for Parliament, and ending up as the PM, but shielded from public criticism by law.

A profile of the Thai princess who was nominated as prime minister. Since she renounced her royal title to marry a commoner (and a Westerner), there’s still some debate whether she falls under Thailand’s lese majeste laws, which make criticizing members of the royal family a crime.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

Bezos, Pecker, and National Enquirer is the news leading the morning shows. Of course it is; it’s salaciousness at its core - sex, extortion, billionaires, and a crummy tabloid engaging in sleazy/criminal acts.

None of this is good for Pecker, whose deal with prosecutors could be in jeopardy. It’s not good for AMI/National Enquirer, and it likely ends the career of the idiot lawyer who prepared the extortionist statements.

I’m sure Bezos wasn’t thinking that this would be how it all turns out when he decided to have an affair, but that’s between him, his soon to be ex-wife, and his mistress.

Meanwhile, Trump’s got to worry about indictments, subpoenas, and investigations coming at him from all angles, thanks to Trumpworld being inhabited by all manner of conman, grifter, and corrupt/criminal actors.

Gun sales are only as regulated as the state with the least restrictive gun laws. How do we know this? Because of the iron pipelines between the states with lax gun laws and those with strong gun control, and that the crimes committed in the states with strong gun laws all too often include firearms obtained in the states with lax laws.

Scorecard by state.

Variations on gun control laws by state.

The stronger the gun control laws, the lower the per capita firearms death rate (includes suicides, accidental discharges, and homicides).

Our states don’t operate in vacuums which is why frankly I’ve always had a problem with the states rights argument. What I actually didn’t know is that Indianapolis in fact has a higher gun violence rate than Chicago does but you never see that because Obama, HRC, and other Dems don’t have connections to Chicago.

Curious if this has happened to anyone else…

A couple of weeks ago I left a bad review on Amazon…first time I’ve ever done that. The vendor was trying to cross-sell a man’s shoe insert to women and it is WAY too big.

The vendor contacted me from China, telling me if I would take the negative review down they’d send me a $50 Amazon GC.

Wrong woman. I can turn a $5 shoe insert into a feminist manifesto in 2.5 seconds. Don’t mess with me.

I ignored the email. My review was correct.

They can plot, but that’s all they can do since they’d have no ability to obtain the land along the border to build it. They’d be in an even worse position than the government to obtain the land. The government could seize by eminent domain - and that’s a costly proposition.

Yup, more than once even. A little ashamed to say I figured it was easy money, both times. I know that stuff is pretty much endemic on Amazon. Used to be as bad on eBay except also with sellers threatening negative feedback for buyers - which is why there’s no such thing any more. Seems eBay has more or less managed to stamp it out, but Amazon just DGAF, apparently.

Anyone else ever have a vendor on Amazon try to bribe them like this?

Yes. A couple times and each time I smacked them down and reported their activity to Amazon.

Also happened to me only once on Yelp when I posted a negative review about a restaurant. The owner tried to go after me with a lawsuit. I wasn’t the only one he did this to. He harassed a lot of YELPers the same way. A bunch of us complained about The Burger Kitchen. Yelp contacted Gordon Ramsey (of all people) and his did a two part episode of Hell’s Kitchen about the place. He included a segment where the owner was confronted by a bunch of YELPers he threatened (Including me). Ramsay tried to save the place but it closed.

Wouldn’t the customers have to report it, rather than take the bribe, in order for it to become a problem?

Not quite sure what you mean. One problem is that reviews are less reliable because the negative ones get bought off. That’s a problem precisely because customers do *not* report it.
If on the other hand you mean a problem for the seller, well under the current system I think you’re right. EBay for example used to (been a while since I read the T&C’s, tbh) reserve the right to read any communications between buyers and sellers to scan for any such transactions taking place. And you better believe they put some effort into that, too.
It’s still not perfect but it does help weed out bad apples.

This was an ethics thing to me. They were marketing a man’s product to women. There was no way to make that product work for women. The vendor was being deceptive. And when they contacted me it pissed me off even more. If they want to sell to women, make a smaller size…and it does not have to be pink, lavender, or sky blue.

But I’ve seen Melissa before. Not really familiar with her acting chops but she’s a terrific mimic too. It absolutely will hurt their business. Not the one review, but an accumulation of negative reviews will hurt sales and possibly even increase costs with the platform (I know it does on eBay, and with formal complaints with PayPal for example as well - not sure about Amazon). Thing is, that’s a good thing. It disincentivizes shoveling crap onto a platform like that and you should absolutely leave the review up - good on you for not taking the payoff, if anything.

Isn’t his SOP to have someone else do all the work (design, building, etc) and just demand 20 million dollars to slap his name on the building?

Elaine Chao seems like a perfectly reasonable pick for her position as well.

Kind of speaks volumes we have to sift through the rubble to point out a few qualified individuals but it’s not as if there haven’t been any.
…I mean, that sort of consistency would require more competence than I’d ascribe to this admin so it kind of makes sense.

The stage was covered, no?

The most infamous story about electric guitars and standing water is that of Les Harvey from the band Stone the Crows. His brother was more famous - Alex Harvey, from the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

My one deathly fear is that of standing water on stage. Will. Not. Do. It. Nope.

The wind was blowing the rain onto the stage. At times it was going sideways, especially during the thunderstorms that rolled through.

2011 - maybe wrt to this particular story

in general, though, i have no doubt the org, at some level - even a low one, helped these people ‘obtain’ their dox

- they had a steady stream of people applying for work at multiple independent locations
- either they assisted, or they ‘knew’ how it was being done and turned a blind eye (they either knew who, or they set the system up)

Two ways, require registration then charge anybody found in possession of unregistered firearms & charge the last registered owner for illegal transfer if the registration date on file for the found firearm occurred after the law went into effect & they didn’t report it as stolen

there is a way that it can be done without registration cause you know ‘central database’ scare the piss out of them
