Hickenlooper strikes me as the sort of politician that would have been very good in the before times. But I’m not sure that the GOP of 2019 is best answered with “extreme moderates”

That really does seem to be what is slowly becoming the reality, Facebook turning from the “hip” place for teens and twenty-somethings into that place your parents put all the family photos because it means your cousins halfway across the planet will be able to see them without digging through their email box.

Something similar has happened in China, but Tencent was clever enough to invent a replacement for QQ — WeChat — itself before someone else got to it. Zuckerberg just buys up smaller companies with better platforms than FB.

QQ was a conglomeration of Facebook, Twitter and LiveJournal, and was extraordinarily successful, especially after the government blocked FB and Twitter. It’s still in active use, but mostly by 30s and older. WeChat, on the other hand, merges Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat, and adds layers of other services, like a built-in payment system, ticket-ordering, bike-rentals, and even mini-games. It’s well nigh universal now.

A third big Chinese app, Sina Weibo, is more like a blog platform, like WordPress. And the most recent entry, Douyin (aka Tik Tok), is now the top dog, especially with the younger set.

It still boggles my mind at how Microsoft let their products, especially Office, diverge so much between Mac and Windows platforms.

Sure, Windows is their platform, but Microsoft early on was making money off of its Mac products, so much so that before it made a lot of money on Windows that the Mac product line was the staple of its innovations (if you want to use that term.)

Of all the things to worry about regarding Brexit, that Brits may be eating American chickens which have been sterilized with chlorine:

Acid Bath Chicken: could the UK face a flock of foreign food post-Brexit?

The headline uses the scare-phrase “acid bath”, when all that is happening is that the chickens are washed in what is essentially equivalent to chlorine bleach.

Now sure, animal welfare folk may have a valid point in that American poultry companies are cruel to birds, but that isn’t what is being used to scare the public. It’s “acid bath”, which I’m not sure is even correct being as a solution may actually be basic depending on exactly what is in it.

Yesterday, I had to pick up a mobile phone as my old Samsung Galaxy S3 is pretty much obsolete at this point.

I picked up a Nokia 5 dual sim (I was pondering a Blackberry Passport for a good price, but Blackberry OS 10 won’t be supported by the end of this year, so no point in buying a brick).

It was used, though under warranty until November of 2020, and quite happily, the version of Android it’s running is quite nice and light, at least on these phones.

And the best part - no Facebook at all. The guy I bought it from had the phone rooted at the shop he purchased it at and they removed all social media apps from the phone. So if I want FB (or WhatsApp, etc.), I have to download it from Google Play and install it on the phone.

Nice having a phone with minimal bloatware.

Well that’s the claim. While it may be true, I’ve not seen any of these articles produce any data to show how Americans are being more adversely affected by chlorine washing chicken, or even that workers in the industry are worse off than the European counterparts.

And even if there are more cases of bacteria (per volume of chicken), of all the things to worry about in regards to Brexit, this seems like a rather trivial thing.

I think the Brits are being driven to the brink of lunacy by their own inability to come to terms with their vote on Brexit:

If the US insists on chlorinated chicken, it can forget a trade deal

Backward US agriculture relies on antibiotics and hormones. Unless it meets British standards, it can join the back of the queue

Worry about American poultry practices is a diversion from the real problems that Brexit will bring, such as people in Northern Ireland now having a hard border with their Irish cousins, or that fresh food from Spain or Greece will rot waiting in days-long queues at the port of entry, or of major manufacturers closing plants in the UK because they don’t want to face import duties to the much larger EU market.

I gave up on the books because (as noted above) the introduction of so many new characters and plot lines. Half-way through book four (Daenyrs in the desert and eating newborn puppies was a momentum killer) I had made the comment to friends that there is no way to tie everything up without killing off 95% of the characters.

More importantly to your point, there are no books coming out that will do anything helpful to resolve the story (without killing 95% of the known world) that would be satisfactory.

Let the dead trees saga die. Tie up the electron based one and do something else; which he is doing. As Shropshire noted, Robert Jordan is a bad model to follow. First the extended bad bad writin after a great start, then the dying part with an incomplete series. With the Wheel of a Time, Brandon Sanderson did a great job in finishing up the writing. Too good with following Jordan’s writing style and following his notes. I hated those three volumes that should have been one.

I’m looking forward to the TV series wrapping up all the subplots. I gave up on the book series midway through the second book. The endless details about food, clothing, heraldry and similar minutiae just bored me to tears. I lost interest in the Wheel of Time series around book 3 or 4 for similar reasons.

The GOP made so much noise last week about how they totally disbelieved Cohen about Donny not believing he was going to win and just seeing the election as a means to enrich his “brand,” yet we hear more and more about things like this that make no sense if the candidate believed he had a real chance of winning.

I think that trump originally went into the election not expecting to win and wanting that media outlet with Roger Ailes. But trump being trump, he got high on the crowds and then had to have the adulation; like a junkie on oxy. So he actually wanted to win but didn’t want to win at the same time.

And honestly, for him, either way was a win. New media outlet or making money off the presidency.

Besides, how hard could presidenting be if that black guy could do it?

It’s an odd dichotomy but I think I understand it.

But food is also a social/cultural trademark and source of identification.

And do not forget, we are also dealing with people who have not really grown out of the oral/anal phase: they are totally fixated on orifices, what we put into them and what comes out of them.

That said, I am about to start working on a batch of spinach-gorgonzola gnocchi. I go vegetarian for Lent every year, even though I have not been a practicing Catholic since childhood; I am not strict or religious about it (I will eat meat if it is served to me) but in general I do not buy or cook it for six weeks just to clear my system out of all those antibiotics and hormones that are found modern meatstuffs.

I won’t order anything more cooked than medium, because I learned as I grew older that if I want to actually taste the steak I need to have something juicier than shoe leather. So when I hear “well-done and slathered in ketchup,” what I hear is a guy who has no idea what the point of eating a steak is besides how much he’s paying for the experience. Certainly not the taste, because he’s getting none of that in the process.

So Gayle King interviewed R. Kelly this morning. It was predictable.

R Kelly thinks that revealing himself to be a bully and aggressive and angry is somehow going to help his case when he’s accused of sexually assaulting young girls. And it went downhill from there:

The second part of King and Kelly’s interview contained more shocking moments, in which King asks about Azriel Clary and Joycelyn Savage, two women who currently live with Kelly and whose parents have publicly claimed are being held against their will.

I know a couple of Lizards here have posted about the QuadrigaCX cryptocurrency issue, but I found this little blurb rather interesting:

New questions have been raised about the increasingly mysterious death of Gerald Cotten, founder and chief of the Canada-based QuadrigaCX cryptocurrency firm. Cotten was the only person who had the codes to access the accounts when he reportedly died of complications of Crohn’s disease on Dec. 9, during a philanthropy trip to India. Auditors from Ernst & Young were brought in to try to crack the codes to recover some $190 million in funds. They were able to break into Cotten’s master account, but soon discovered that all of the crypto wallets had been emptied eight months before Cotten’s alleged death. E&Y also says 14 client accounts were created outside the company’s “normal process” that were involved in the withdrawal of the funds and sent them to “addresses not associated with Quadriga.” The auditors are now examining all historical transactions for further clues.

Here’s the problem for a Democratic president: Today’s Republican Party isn’t just committed to a particular set of policy preferences, it’s also committed to a style of politics in which 1) any compromise with Democrats on a controversial issue is an unconscionable betrayal, and 2) literally any tactics, no matter how morally reprehensible, are justified in the pursuit of their goals.

If Hickenlooper really thinks he can just talk to the GOP and get a compromise, he doesn’t belong in the White House.

I went to a bunch of ruins in Belize and then to Tikal, as well. The smallest ruin in Belize, Cahal Pech, was my favorite. You could really feel life there. Three weeks in Central America and it was really a trip of a lifetime.

I hiked up Temple IV at Tikal in Guatemala. Six wooden ladders to get up to the top and, when I was there, only the top part had been excavated. It was the most amazing site.

I happened to meet a guy at Tikal who was from Guatemala and was a student of archaeology at U of Texas and my entire day was spent with him, wandering about, learning…it was like a private tour.

I have probably one of the funniest stories from all of my travels while at Tikal. I stayed at the hotel on the premises and you walk about a quarter mile into Tikal from the hotel. On the way out, I was walking along side of a guy who worked there. I don’t speak a word of Spanish and he didn’t speak any English, but for that entire quarter mile we talked and laughed. I have no idea what he said but the entire 20 minute walk was all talking and laughing and one of the most enjoyable experiences I ever had. Funniest thing I have ever experienced, truly.

On the way back to Belize from Tikal, I was in a four-seater plane and the pilot let me take control (while his hands hovered over the controls on his side).

I think I would rather watch this movie in European French but the Canadian version is what’s on the Region 1 DVD.

What we’re seeing is entire families are seeking entry and asylum here, as opposed to just someone trying to cross to get a job and repatriate money back home.

That’s part of it.

The rest of it is that the increase with that one group is offset by declines in all other groups. Trump ignores that the crisis in Venezuela means more people are trying to come to the US for asylum and a better life.

He doesn’t care. They’re nonwhite, and he thinks this is a crisis.

And the humanitarian crisis is self-inflicted thanks to Trump’s illegal actions, including forced separations and refusal to follow the law and court orders to reunite families with their children.

The government also continues to fail to provide adequate and proper facilities for these families while they await processing (and Trump doesn’t seek adequate funding either - hoping that word of the horrible conditions reduces the flow of people coming in). It’s about trying to inflict so much pain on people seeking entry that they just don’t come.

The US is breaking the law (I think) by making them wait in Mexico for room in the detention facilities here.

actually, there was 160,000 Allied troops landed on D-Day, on a 50-mile stretch.

So less than half that number, spread across 2000 miles and spread across a month… not really comparable.

Also, a significant percentage of those entering “illegally”, i.e. not at a port of entry — is because Trump CLOSED the ports of entry to asylum seekers. They wait around for a few weeks, they run out of money, the kids get hungry, they say fuck it and walked 10 miles to a not-port-of-entry crossing that looks reasonably accessible.

Fox News story:

House Democratic leaders, after delaying a vote on a resolution condemning anti-Semitism, are trying to steer discussion away from the controversial comments by Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar that started the debate and instead focus on the “rise in hate” in the United States — and President Trump’s role.

Asked by reporters Wednesday about the resolution and whether Omar should lose her seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee because of repeated comments viewed as anti-Semitic, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, pivoted to Trump.

“We are committed to decisively condemning anti-Semitism, racism, white supremacy, Islamophobia, homophobia, and the rise in hate that has taken place in this country - perhaps coincidentally - over the last two years, since January of 2017,” Jeffries said.

He also ripped into Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for suggesting there is a rise in controversial remarks among House Democratic freshmen like Omar, accusing Trump of “hateful” comments.

Zigzagging was useless. The gators never followed long enough for it to matter in the mythbusters test.

They are ambush predators and if they don’t get you in the ambush, they tend to not bother chasing you.

This makes no sense as substantive policy.

Trump’s foreign policy is in shambles and it manifests itself all over the place, whether it’s the white supremacist immigration policy, or falling over himself to get a deal with North Korea, or kowtow to Russia (or claim that the Brexit will somehow benefit both the UK and US even though there’s zero evidence of either).

Trump’s foreign policy forays have been failures - with Russia benefiting all over the place.

Went to the food pantry today before going to the Ash Wednesday service.

Got given a lb of ground Elk (!) there. Going to have to find a good recipe for that, especially since it’s probably got to be from this year’s first legal Elk hunt since he reintroduction of elk in Wisconsin with a herd of 25 in 1995 by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The herd has grown to an estimated 180 and they had, IIRC, 6 or 10 hunting tags issued with all but one going to the local tribes or charity.

I’m saying Perez knew, but couldn’t prove it to the satisfaction of the the ‘Plague on both your houses’ crowd that thinks Fox is just the mirror of other news networks, and not uniquely bad. The New Yorker article provides the evidence he needs to drop Fox without it just seeming to be avoiding a news organization that ‘asks the tough questions’.

There are people out there who are NOT Trumpkins who see Fox and MSNBC as completely equivalent.
