So, as I understand it, the PB’s were in Portland today, strutting jaybirds, and AntiFa showed up wearing a lot of mocking costumes. The PB’s were told to get rid of their weapons (flag poles and such), and AntiFa had none. Well except for mocking signs.

All in all, it kind of sounds like the French vs. the English scene at the castle in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”.

One group came with a mocking sense of humor, and the other came with nothing but bile.

Which ones were terrorists?

EDIT: From the Newsweek Article in question:

The Folio Society asked Spiegelman to remove the Orange Skull reference from the essay, claiming Marvel Comics was trying to remain “apolitical” and wouldn’t allow its publications to take political stances. In response, Spiegelman pulled the introduction and will instead write on the subject in an essay to be published in The Guardian on Saturday.

Oh, for fuck’s sake, just say you’re scared of getting a whiny tweet from the overgrown manchild in the White House while he figures out how he can fuck with you via the DOJ. I guess with Kirby, Lee, and Ditko dead, Marvel’s just decided to rewrite their origins from “Comic book company that takes on the status quo” to “Comic book company that was always cool with authority!”

My comment on this when it came up in the Facebook nerd pop culture group I’m in:

Yeah, you know who would be a good choice to write an apolitical forward to a book about our Golden Age, in which our characters were constantly beating the shit out of WW2 leaders with fascist tendencies? That guy who won a Pulitzer for creating a graphic novel about the Holocaust.

It’s refreshing that at least one NY Times columnist makes the argument that a definition of a healthy economy that relies on continued population growth is seriously flawed and we need to redefine the measures for appropriate growth.

Personally, I think that’s one of the stupidest ideas they’ve ever had, as a white-supremacist regime is more likely to try to suppress the entire comic/ graphic-novel/ webcomic sector, due to it being “entartete Kunst by virtue of its very Semitic origins,” but then quislings and collaborateurs have historically been even dumber than actual native-born rank-and-file fascists, and now that I think about it the existence, even if it’s now in the past tense, of Jack Chick may leave the talibangelicals thinking there’s a way to sanitise and weaponise comics.

Honestly, between companies saying either they want to be “apolitical” or they want to avoid being accused of “liberalism,” I think the unsaid reality is that many of these companies know that pissing off liberals may bring angry tweets and threats of boycotts, it won’t bring the threatening phone calls and nail bombs that the other side tends towards when they’re ticked off at somebody.

That thing has “Show Horse” practically written down the side. It’s not something that’s meant to be driven hard or often, it’s something that the few rich “elite” guy who can afford one buys to drive to the big social gatherings or to the golf club once a month. The rest of the time, it sits in a garage, getting lovingly pampered with the other show horses.

It’s absolutely gorgeous and the numbers that come with it are mind-boggling…but I could also buy a decent-sized house, furnish it, and still have money left over to buy an M3 with all the bells and whistles.

They are, which is why as a part-time comic book fan, I feel dick moves like this have less to do with Marvel wanting to look “apolitical” and more about their worry that Donny finding out a passage referring to him as the “Orange Skull” managed to make it to publication would bring a whole lot of nasty shit down on their heads that they don’t want to deal with.

I guess the confusion must be a feature, not a bug:

Leaked Brexit documents show worst-case scenario - minister

Leaked British government documents warning of the impact of a no-deal Brexit are based on a worst-case scenario, said Michael Gove, the minister in charge of coordinating preparations for leaving the European Union without a deal.

The official documents on a project titled “Yellowhammer” show that Britain will face shortages of fuel, food and medicine if it leaves the EU without a transition deal, jamming ports and requiring a hard border in Ireland, the Sunday Times reported.

… but…

Food, fuel and drug shortages: Leaked paper reveals no-deal Brexit fears

One Whitehall source told the newspaper: “This is not Project Fear - this is the most realistic assessment of what the public will face with no deal. These are likely, basic, reasonable scenarios - not the worst case”.

The dossier reveals that:

● The government expects the return of a hard border in Ireland as plans to avoid checks will prove “unsustainable”, risking protests

● There could be months of border delays that could lead to shortages of fuel affecting London and the south east

● Disruption at ports is expected to last for up to three months before the flow of traffic “improves” to 50 per cent to 70 per cent of the current rate

● The imposition of petrol import tariffs, which the government has set at 0 per cent, could lead to the closure of two oil refineries and 2,000 job losses, industrial unrest and disruptions to fuel supply

● There will be passenger delays at EU airports, St Pancras, Eurotunnel and Dover

● Medical supplies will “be vulnerable to severe extended delays”

● Fresh food supplies will be reduced, leading to higher prices

● Police resources will need to quell protests across the UK protests across the UK, which may “require significant amounts of police resource[s]”

● Gibraltar will face delays of more than four hours at the border with Spain

[…]

I guess they’ll find out soon enough if the the scenario is worst case or likely case.

I’m wondering if this is a test balloon: if they get a reaction “BLITZ STIFF UPPER LIP We need to get on with it!” from the Brexiters, that’s one thing. If, as it looks like, the Brexiter reaction is “FAKE NEWS” and, er, it’s not, they may have a really serious problem on their hands in November.

The mass, held by the Satanic Temple of Ottawa took place at The Koven, a heavy metal bar located on Murray Street in the downtown area. The event was a private function available only to approximately fifty ticket holders from across the country and the United States.

Right next door and across the street from The Koven sat protesters voicing their opinions regarding the black mass.

The Newsweek article kinda glossed over it briefly, but a lot of it seems to come down to the fact that current Marvel chairman, Ike Perlmutter, is a close Trump ally. He’d been pushed out of having creative input, especially where the MCU movies came in, but he still holds enough sway and influence that it’s hard not to see his fingerprints on this.

sounds like it

“Police initially became aware of Reardon on July 11 when he posted a video on Instagram of a man shooting a semi-automatic rifle with sirens and screams in the background. He tagged the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown in the post.

“That kicked off an intense investigation, a very rapidly evolving investigation, because of the way the world is,” New Middletown Police Chief Vince D’Egidio told Youngstown ABC affiliate WYTV.

Reardon is an avowed anti-Semite and white nationalist and attended the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, according to WYTV. During the raid on his house on Friday police also discovered anti-Semitic and white nationalist propaganda.”

GOP Response to Mass Shootings: Blame the Left, by El Jefe, Juanita Jean’s

The Tampa Bay Times got their hands on a House GOP caucus memo that gave members talking points to respond to constituent questions about mass shootings and the need for common sense gun safety legislation. The answers are as disgusting and disheartening as you would imagine. They contain the normal boilerplate bullshit, repeating the mental health and video game mantra, even though those myths have been debunked for decades. No Republican can explain, since mental health problems and violent video games proliferate throughout the world, why the US is a singular outlier when it comes to gun violence generally and mass shootings specifically. They will dance around the issue, blaming EVERYTHING except the actual problem - the omnipresence of guns and the ease by which they can be obtained.

GOP Response to Mass Shootings: Blame the Left, by El Jefe, Juanita Jean’s

Is this a surprise to anyone? The contemporary GOP is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Russians (which also owns the NRA) and they are never going to do what’s best for this nation. My sister kept on saying yesterday that she thought this time would be different -and as I repeatedly told her, I don’t know why anyone should believe that. It didn’t change after Sandy Hook or Las Vegas — so why this time? It will only become different if the GOP is thrown out of government permanently.

re: #81 Hecuba’s daughter

Didn’t surprise me in the least. I’ve always assumed there was regular messaging between the GOP, AM Radio hosts, talk show hosts, Fox News. The narratives form in real time and are usually formed in 24-48 hours and regurgitated from all parties. AM radio is especially noticeable.

The recent Cuomo Fredo kerfuffle was especially noticeable. A few AM yakkers spent two days on it and it’s still not over.

Why We Should Remember 1619 WaPo

Good history lesson! And a fair number of good comments.

Four hundred years ago, the first Africans set foot on mainland English America. Held as captives first on a Portuguese slave ship and then an English privateer, they had endured a grueling journey across the Atlantic Ocean during the summer of 1619. They traveled from present-day Angola to Point Comfort, Virginia, where they were sold to the colonists of Jamestown. The arrival of enslaved Africans in colonial Virginia would shape not only the future of Jamestown, but also the subsequent development of the United States.

“There’s an awful lot of really good Republicans out there,” he said Saturday at a Massachusetts fundraiser. “I get in trouble for saying that with Democrats, but the truth of the matter is, every time we ever got in trouble with our administration, remember who got sent up to Capitol Hill to fix it? Me. Because they know I respect the other team.”

Biden added that many conservatives are being “intimidated” to follow in lockstep with President Trump.

“They’re decent people. They ran because they care about things, but they’re intimidated right now,” he told the fundraiser’s attendees. Source: The Hill

I actually posted about this “You’re comparing me to Hitler, LOL!” debating tactic on a blog post in January 2011!

Godwin’s Law (“As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.”) was relevant in 1989 when it was first coined by Mike Godwin, but has since become redundant in US politics as the Overton Window gracelessly lumbers rightward, and needs to be updated.

Here’s my attempt: “As an online discussion with a US right winger grows longer, the probability of the right winger invoking Godwin’s Law in order to shut down further discussion of their views approaches 1.”

Was reading an interview earlier today about a researcher at Christopher Newport University who published a prediction last year that nailed the Blue Wave almost perfectly, in total defiance of the usual suspects who said that the Dems would be lucky if they managed to reach 217. You are correct. But we do have to remind people to get out and vote when the time comes.

Oh, I totally agree. But it’s hard not to see in that line towards the end:

McInturff said those numbers presage a general election — like 2016 — featuring two unpopular party nominees.

As an author looking to push a narrative rather than letting the numbers speak for themselves.

By the way, for those unfamiliar with the name, Bill McInturff was the chief pollster for McCain’s ‘08 presidential run. So take anything he has to say about an election with a grain of salt big enough to use as a door stop.

You’ve been “talking” with China for the better part of 2 years now, Donny. The problem is that your idea of “talking” is like that of a mafia don who thinks the way to get a rival family to agree to a joint venture…is to start a turf war with them, then meet every setback with even greater violence. You may be bleeding their manpower, but you’re doing yourself no favors.

The book is worth picking up, too.

“The Family is about the other half of American fundamentalist power—not its angry masses, but its sophisticated elites. Sharlet follows the story back to Abraham Vereide, an immigrant preacher who in 1935 organized a small group of businessmen sympathetic to European fascism, fusing the far right with his own polite but authoritarian faith. From that core, Vereide built an international network of fundamentalists who spoke the language of establishment power, a “family” that thrives to this day. In public, they host Prayer Breakfasts; in private, they preach a gospel of “biblical capitalism,” military might, and American empire. Citing Hitler, Lenin, and Mao as leadership models, the Family’s current leader, Doug Coe, declares, “We work with power where we can, build new power where we can’t.”

The irony is that mac & cheese used to be a dish for the upper crust of America, since the pasta had to be fresh made and required a machine that most households wouldn’t have. It was really only after mass production was brought to foods and macaroni made cheaply available that it became a “broke food.”

My deferred comp account at work gives us a couple dozen choices as to how to invest. I just moved a bunch of money from stocks to bonds (I had moved out of the bond market when Trump first got elected because I thought he was going to find a way to completely fuck it up).
