Sept. 9, 2019 | Bob Boilen — It’s 10 years almost to the day since we published The Tallest Man On Earth’s Tiny Desk in 2009. What I remember most about that performance was the intensity of Kristian Matsson and how astonished our audience was to discover him. I think of it as one of our very first viral videos. Tiny Desk Concerts were in their infancy in 2009; we had recorded only about 25 by the time he visited my desk. Now, almost 850 Tiny Desk Concerts later, The Tallest Man On Earth returns with a touch of grey and a beard, but still ever so slender and intense.

The Swedish singer now splits his time between Djurås, Sweden and Brooklyn, N.Y., and has just put out his fifth studio album titled, I Love You. It’s a Fever Dream. I think Kristian Matsson’s words are more focused, more observational and more appreciative of life than in the past. His new song, “The Running Styles of New York,” begins with, “I hear beauty in things / Like the neighbors return / To their love and pride / Their day like a wicked ride / But then to belong.”

C.J. Camerieri joins him on French Horn and trumpet and those mournful sounds amplify these songs and their thoughtful intent. Hey, Kristian, want to come back in 2029?

Antoine de Saint-Exupery.” The recipient William Joseph “Wild Bill” Donovan was an American soldier, lawyer, intelligence officer and diplomat. He is best remembered as the wartime head of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency, during World War II. He is also known as the “Father of American Intelligence” and the “Father of Central Intelligence.”

Yeah, there was a huge fight between Mac and the intelligence services over who had access to intelligence in the push toward the Philippines. Mac liked to brag. Willoughby wasn’t *that* inept, it was just that no one would talk to him because the Military Intel Services hated Mac that much. He just would’nt fucking listen to them, and couldn’t keep his mouth shut, talking about top secret info while playing bridge with his wife and their friends. Willoughby was kept clueless by the people that had cut Mac out the of the loop.

Then again, he was a pompous, self-important yes-man of a human being, and probably deserved what he got. No more self-awareness than a dog licking it’s asshole on a public street.

New topic: I confess that I watch uber-jerk Bill Maher on a regular basis. Bari Weiss was there to promote her new book “How to Fight Anti-Semitism”. I’m not taking one for the team by reading her book but it did seem, from the discussion, that her writing was treating the Muslim members of the Squad as equivalent to the out-right Nazis that actually murdered Jews. She made no reference to the GOP appeals to anti-Semitism, by its constant harping on George Soros or the infamous Kevin McCarthy tweet.

The journalist could carefully explore the online radicalization process that leads men to violent white supremacy, and detail possible ways to curb it. She could talk to students involved in the campus boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement to more clearly understand their motivations, before unpacking whether or when the effort is anti-Semitic. She could go to Crown Heights in New York, where a long history of tension between the black and Hasidic communities has lately erupted into violence against the neighborhood’s Jews, and perhaps interview local leaders trying to bridge those divides. She could explore why American schools are doing a miserable job teaching the Holocaust and how that affects discourse about Jews and Israel.

Bari Weiss does not do any of these things, or any of these sorts of things, in her slim new volume, How to Fight Anti-Semitism. In theory the book is Weiss’ response to the October 2018 massacre at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue. This was a personal tragedy for Weiss: It unfolded not only in her hometown, but at the very synagogue where she was bat mitzvahed. Unfortunately, she has used the attack as a launch pad for a bizarre and undercooked exercise in rhetorical bothsidesism, in which she argues that American Jews should be just as worried about college students who overzealously criticize Israel as they are about the aspiring Einsatzgruppen who shoot up shuls.

My friends who fled the USSR in the 80s as it collapsed insist that there is no difference between Soviet Communist Party cells and American churches. Both do the same brainwashing.

The walkway was completely useless in a Texas deluge, which was usually how we got rain in Houston. One day, our cat Fluffy crawled up into the covered walkway from the garage and had to be fished out. (It may even have involved fish, I don’t remember.) We heard him meowing but we couldn’t figure out where he was. After we lured him out, my father complained about how much trouble THAT CAT was and then hammered a piece of board over the entrance.

Which is a good thing. New perspectives are important. The thing about Atlanta is that while it is still confederate as fuck, there are also quite a lot of people here who are not even a little southern, like me. This kind of sign going up is a big thing, it shows a shift in the public discussion and even some embarrassment and wanting to make the facts known up front.
