There’s nobody else like this brilliant weirdo in music today.

Watch The Tallest Man On Earth play “What I’ve Been Kicking Around”, “I’ll Be A Sky” and “The Running Styles of New York” at the Tiny Desk.

Sept. 9, 2019 | Bob Boilen — It’s 10 years almost to the day since we published The Tallest Man On Earth’s Tiny Desk in 2009. What I remember most about that performance was the intensity of Kristian Matsson and how astonished our audience was to discover him. I think of it as one of our very first viral videos. Tiny Desk Concerts were in their infancy in 2009; we had recorded only about 25 by the time he visited my desk. Now, almost 850 Tiny Desk Concerts later, The Tallest Man On Earth returns with a touch of grey and a beard, but still ever so slender and intense.

The Swedish singer now splits his time between Djurås, Sweden and Brooklyn, N.Y., and has just put out his fifth studio album titled, I Love You. It’s a Fever Dream. I think Kristian Matsson’s words are more focused, more observational and more appreciative of life than in the past. His new song, “The Running Styles of New York,” begins with, “I hear beauty in things / Like the neighbors return / To their love and pride / Their day like a wicked ride / But then to belong.”

C.J. Camerieri joins him on French Horn and trumpet and those mournful sounds amplify these songs and their thoughtful intent. Hey, Kristian, want to come back in 2029?

WOW! My number one, favorite most-wanted copy of any World War II book has come on the market.

OSS chief “Wild Bill” Donovan’s copy of Antoine de St. Exupery’s Flight to Arras, personally inscribed by St. Exupery.

Signed limited edition one of 500 copies, additionally inscribed by Saint-Exupery. Octavo, original half leather, gilt titles to the spine, top edge gilt. Additionally inscribed on the half-title page (translated from the French), “For Colonel Donovan, With all my esteem and all my friendship. Antoine de Saint-Exupery.” The recipient William Joseph “Wild Bill” Donovan was an American soldier, lawyer, intelligence officer and diplomat. He is best remembered as the wartime head of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency, during World War II. He is also known as the “Father of American Intelligence” and the “Father of Central Intelligence.”

It’s pricey but this may only happen once in a thousand years.

MoH citation:

Lt. Col. Donovan personally led the assaulting wave in an attack upon a very strongly organized position, and when our troops were suffering heavy casualties he encouraged all near him by his example, moving among his men in exposed positions, reorganizing decimated platoons, and accompanying them forward in attacks. When he was wounded in the leg by machine-gun bullets, he refused to be evacuated and continued with his unit until it withdrew to a less exposed position.

FDR was like Lincoln in that respect, he would use whatever tools were available to him regardless of past conflicts or personal friction. At the opposite extreme, Douglas MacArthur measured a subordinate’s value by the magnitude of the subordinate’s sycophancy. Didn’t know till tonight that the OSS did not operate in the Philippines during the war, including the Japanese occupation, when their know-how and resources might have been vital. MacArthur blocked them from the theater, preferring to rely on his own bungling intelligence operation headed by the famously inept Maj. Gen. Charles Willoughby.

Yeah, there was a huge fight between Mac and the intelligence services over who had access to intelligence in the push toward the Philippines. Mac liked to brag. He was a security risk, because we had the codes, called Magic, that the Japanese Navy used. It’s how we were able to shoot down Yamamoto. Willoughby wasn’t *that* inept, it was just that no one would talk to him because the Military Intel Services hated Mac that much. He just would’nt fucking listen to them, and couldn’t keep his mouth shut, talking about top secret info while playing bridge with his wife and their friends. Willoughby was kept clueless by the people that had cut Mac out the of the loop.

Then again, he was a pompous, self-important yes-man of a human being, and probably deserved what he got. No more self-awareness than a dog licking it’s asshole on a public street.

It’s shit like this that made guillotines so fashionable in France:

“While the Sacklers continue to lowball victims and skirt a responsible settlement, we refuse to allow the family to misuse the courts in an effort to shield their financial misconduct,” James told the Times in a statement. “Records from one financial institution alone have shown approximately $1 billion in wire transfers between the Sacklers, entities they control, and different financial institutions, including those that have funneled funds into Swiss bank accounts.”

Court documents filed by James’s office on Friday reportedly show initial findings from one unnamed financial institution. The filing reportedly shows a series of transfers by former Purdue board member Mortimer D.A. Sackler.

“Already, these records have allowed the state to identify previously unknown shell companies that one of the Sackler defendants used to shift Purdue money through accounts around the world and then conceal it in at least two separate multimillion-dollar real estate investments back here in New York, sanitized [until now] of any readily detectable connections to the Sackler family,” wrote lawyer David E. Nachman from James’s office in a letter to the court, according to the Times.

It all flows together:

Man filmed giving Nazi salute at pro-Brexit rally didn’t break law, police say

A protester who threw a Nazi salute for the camera at a pro-Brexit rally in Parliament Square did not break the law, police have said.

This is despite a police officer at the scene saying he had committed a public order offence but that arresting him would have put pro-remain protesters at risk of violence.

Campaign group Hope Not Hate said the footage demonstrates how Brexit has become a ‘mobilising force for the far right’ who have a strong presence during protests.

The man was filmed during a protest organised by the right-wing Democratic Football Lads Alliance (DFLA), which is often accused of Islamophobia.

The DFLA have distanced themselves from the man wearing the red Make America Great Again hat and say they have no control over who attends their rallies.

I have a theory that the Barr investigation into the origins of the “fake” allegations against Trump led to the public unmasking of the Soviet agent that helped us. Slate did take one for the team, and their assessment agrees with yours.

Bari Weiss’ new book on combating hatred of Jews in the Trump era is more interested in condemning the left than actually confronting the problem.

The journalist could carefully explore the online radicalization process that leads men to violent white supremacy, and detail possible ways to curb it. She could talk to students involved in the campus boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement to more clearly understand their motivations, before unpacking whether or when the effort is anti-Semitic. She could go to Crown Heights in New York, where a long history of tension between the black and Hasidic communities has lately erupted into violence against the neighborhood’s Jews, and perhaps interview local leaders trying to bridge those divides. She could explore why American schools are doing a miserable job teaching the Holocaust and how that affects discourse about Jews and Israel.

Bari Weiss does not do any of these things, or any of these sorts of things, in her slim new volume, How to Fight Anti-Semitism. In theory the book is Weiss’ response to the October 2018 massacre at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue. This was a personal tragedy for Weiss: It unfolded not only in her hometown, but at the very synagogue where she was bat mitzvahed. Unfortunately, she has used the attack as a launch pad for a bizarre and undercooked exercise in rhetorical bothsidesism, in which she argues that American Jews should be just as worried about college students who overzealously criticize Israel as they are about the aspiring Einsatzgruppen who shoot up shuls.

Funny thing is that a number of authors in the 2016 National Review “Against Trump” issue also warned about this… but several now support him because he’s a totalitarian who advances their interests.

In 2016, many conservatives rightly understood that Trump was not truly a conservative and they feared that he would make deals with the Dems. Now that they understand that, although he actually has no coherent ideology (except to make himself rich and feared), he will support all RW and theocratic proposals, they are totally on board.

Looking beyond 2020, one might think that a sweeping Democratic electoral victory would focus conservative minds and unite them against a common enemy as is typically the case in American politics. But it’s just as likely that the anti-Trump elements in the GOP who have been quietly waiting in the wings will attempt to pounce after his defeat, only to find that the party’s actual base and most of its new bench of electeds are unflinching Trumpists who will seek to double down on his rhetoric and bigoted political instincts.

What I still cannot get my mind around is how the GOP — the ultimate anti-Communist party — has morphed into the pro-Russian pro-KGB loving party. They have not morphed. They have been the American equivalent of the Soviet Communist Party for quite a while.

Compare Republican speeches to those of Soviet Communists and you’ll note they are almost identical word for word. Where Soviet Communists would say “Marx”, Republicans say “God” AND where Soviet Communists would say “Lenin” Republicans say “Reagan”.

Putin is not spreading a world ideology, but he is interested in restoring the old Russian Empire. And there is a large population of ethnic Russians stranded in the former Soviet republics to serve as his Sudetendeutsch as they have served in the Crimea and are serving in Eastern Ukraine.

Communism is the bogey man that can be used as a focus to rally your troops towards your ultimate goal of theocracy. It’s areligious/atheistic, not capitalism, and foreign countries claim it as an ideology. So, rally the theists, xenophobes, Randians, and there’s your base. All willing to move towards an authoritarian state that supports their particular ideology. They’ll also forgive some “bad” things in exchange for that power.

Nope, it’s a cult

Anyone who still supports Trump at this point is a black hole for your time, a total lost cause

Focus on non-voters. Plant seeds where they can grow

I agree on where our short-term focus has to be, but cultists can in fact be deprogrammed, some white supremacists have reformed, and the ill-informed (who might never in their lives have heard anything but right-wing lies) can be exposed to truths. So no, not total lost causes forever.

Worked for us in the midterms. The kind of calling , writing and texting some of us have been doing since seems like forever is estimated to increase turnout by up to three percent. Given the approval ratings of repugs these days, also the fact that DT “won” with 70,000 voter across three states, we have a good shot at reversing it. If we keep at it. If we keep hitting hard at voter suppression. If we get out and canvass during the elections.

In the 1970s we lived in a house with a detached garage that had a covered walkway to the back door of the house. The walkway was completely useless in a Texas deluge, which was usually how we got rain in Houston. One day, our cat Fluffy crawled up into the covered walkway from the garage and had to be fished out. (It may even have involved fish, I don’t remember.) We heard him meowing but we couldn’t figure out where he was. After we lured him out, my father complained about how much trouble THAT CAT was and then hammered a piece of board over the entrance.

I think I remember reading in the Atlanta paper, the AJC, that funds had been raised or set aside to make signs like this in various spots around the Atlanta metro.A group of smart people are on it. Which is a good thing. New perspectives are important. The thing about Atlanta is that while it is still confederate as fuck, there are also quite a lot of people here who are not even a little southern, like me. This kind of sign going up is a big thing, it shows a shift in the public discussion and even some embarrassment and wanting to make the facts known up front. In the South, that’s a big deal because decorum and manners and shit used to be a cloak to hide this shit behind. People are starting to get sick of it. The war that has devastated Yemen reached into Saudi Arabia early Saturday, with drone strikes on two major Saudi oil refineries, and a claim of responsibility from Yemen’s Houthi rebel faction.

There were no reports of casualties and the extent of the damage was unclear, but the attacks struck deep within Saudi territory, at the core of the country’s economy. They came just as Saudi Aramco, the state-owned oil giant, accelerated plans for what could be the largest initial public offering of stock in the world, an event closely watched by investors globally.

Being the honkey cracker white motherfucker that I am, I still would love to have seen James Brown at the Apollo Theater. That, to me, is the best concert in New York City.

Kris Vallotton is a leader at Bethel Church Redding. He’s also the leader of “Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry,” which has been called the “Christian Hogwarts” by some wags.

So he posts this crap:

I fully expect to be banned from his page, but I had to say this, because it’s rank, festering garbage!

I hate Pulpit Pimps like this ass. Pimps like this are the reason why my aunt continually flushed her prescriptions down the toilet because she went up for a “healing” every time she went to a Foursquare or ASSemblies of Gawd brainwashing center. Thanks to them she was an unstable manic depressive until she passed away.

From Mccarthyism, we remember the press people that stood up to him and “Do you have no sense of decency, sir?”

Only 2 people stood up like that—Edward R. Murrow and Henry Wallace in The New Republic.

I loathe Maher, as you all know, but now I hate him even more. He’s pro fat shaming.

He needs to fuck right off.

Said it before, say it again: every six to eight months, Bill Maher publicly reminds me why I made the right move by not watching him anymore.

I went to tech school for graphic arts and learned how to set cold type. Learned that early on. :)

No idea. Just saw teleskiguy’s post.
