Well, it’s bad, but it would be a thousand times worse if they said “Yes, sir.”
Like I’ve said before, take Montana, put another Montana under it, and another Montana under that, and you’ve got an area equal to Iran. Now put three Rocky Mountains ranges through it. Easy to invade, yes? No. Easy to get armor through, yes? Oh, hell no.
Fighting Iran in a land war would be worse than Afghanistan, where empires go to die.
You want another forever war? There it is.

Hi. We’re back from Colorado.
After the Mercedes-Benz dealer did a $500 walletectomy for car repairs after the hailstorm (and ordered another $1,100 worth of parts for a second round), we went to Colorado Springs to visit for a couple days with a friend of my wife.
We got home very late last night.
Today, we had to go to the store, but US-26 is torn up for construction between Lisco and Bridgeport and down to one lane (a distance of about thirty miles, which means long waits for the pilot car).
We decided instead to take the back road to Oshkosh (thirteen cattle guards over sand roads in Garden County) to go to the superette there.
My wife is now making Cincinnati chili (I misspelt the city, and spell check offered “incineration” for the correction).
Seriously, that was the most batshit crazy thing I’ve seen the president* of the United States say. OUR MILITARY IS OUT OF BULLETS would land any other president in prison.

No kidding. It’s not like the DOD doesn’t keep track of how much ammunition it has.
There was something that came up a while ago about the DOD saying it didn’t have a full stock of bombs for the Air Force and Navy, but that has been corrected.
If the military was low on ammunition, the DOD would be all over Capitol Hill raising a stink about funding for more. “Ammunition” refers to small arms, not things like artillery ordinance or rockets or whatnot.

Another KY School Found a Clever Way to Get Around the “In God We Trust” Law (Goes to Hemant Mehta’s Friendly Atheist blog).
First there was a school district which distributed blown-up images of the back of a one dollar bill.
Then there was a school (named Lincoln) which posted an oversize image of the obverse of a Lincoln cent (which contains the phrase).
Now another school has posted a poster with a short history of the phrase “In God We Trust” as used on coinage and currency. Since that phrase appears on the poster, it complies with the law.
It would seem Kentucky school districts are tired of the GOP’s false piety in answer to school shootings.

As predicted, the woman who shut down her event hall and Facebook page after a firestorm of controversy where she claimed interracial marriages are un-Biblical is back in business.
She also has a new Facebook page and it’s also back in business.
She explains (without self-awareness apparently) that after reading the Bible, interracial marriage is not prohibited there. As such her original claim (her Christian faith was why she didn’t allow an interracial couple to rent her hall) is a lie: She never actually read her Bible. It’s good old fashioned Mississippi racism.
To all who have been following the video posted of not allowing biracial marriages in our business please read the content of this message it is very important… as a child growing up in Mississippi our racial boundaries that were unstated were that of staying with your own race. This was never verbally spoke, but it was understood in order to preserve the white identity. On Saturday my husband asked me to show him in the Bible where it was located as to the content concerning biracial relationships. I studied for a minute and began to think about the history of my learning this and where it came from. I was unable to recall instances where the Bible was used giving a verse that would support my decision… after searching Saturday evening, Saturday night, most of the day Sunday and sitting down with my pastor Sunday night after church I have come to the conclusion my decision which was based on white preservation subliminally taught by my elders. I have, for many years, stood firm on my Christian faith not knowing that biracial relationships were NEVER mentioned in The Bible!

Well, at least Trump isn’t on your ballot.
Here in the land of sandhills, the weather radio just noted in our climate summary that we are about 4” above average for rainfall on the year (normal is 16”, we’re at 20”).
Despite that, the North Platte River continues to fall after record snowfall in Wyoming last winter, which caused Wyoming to open its dams and flood us downstream here. We are now well below flood stage, and the Beerline Irrigation Canal here in town has fallen to normal levels (last month it was only a couple inches from overflowing and flooding every house on this street).

There are an awful lot of conservatives who seem to believe their propaganda about liberals being afraid of fighting (except when they’re trying to claim things like “leftist violence”), or liberals are afraid of guns.
It would seem most liberals would view violence as a failure of the political system, not as a fear of self-protection or firearms.
As far as a general strike goes, I imagine if one of sufficient size and effect on the economy could be organised, I would imagine big businesses and Wall Street would be putting a whole lot of pressure on their bought-and-paid for Republican politicians to cave to end that (as it cuts into profits).

re: #86 Belafon
National polls came to the same conclusion that voters did - they favored Clinton and she won the popular vote by nearly 3+ million.
The problem is the distribution of those votes. It fell to a handful of voters in a handful of states, and that distribution meant Trump winning where it counted - the EC.
That’s why national polls are good at sentiment broadly, but those who want to know if Trump is in trouble need to focus at state level polls to see which ones are trending which way.
This isn’t rocket science. It’s how the US electoral system works (or doesn’t). Trump lies incessantly about this because he knows most people only recall the outcome, not how the votes distributed nationally, or that the polls were really spot on.

Fuck this fucking hateful administration of fucking assholes.
Newsweek - An asylum seeker said he and his child were kidnapped and held for ransom by Mexican cartel members just hours after asylum policies enacted by the Trump administration forced them to return to Mexico under “protection protocols.”
The man, who is one of 42,000 asylum seekers sent back to Mexico by the Trump administration since mid-July, told VICE News that corrupt Mexican immigration officials and uncaring U.S. Border Patrol agents work in tandem to deliver destitute migrants to cartels.
VICE reported on the story of “David” who, along with his young child, were forced into trucks and abducted just a few hours and miles away from the border crossing where he’d hoped to seek asylum in the United States. After being promised shelter as they awaited an asylum court hearing, David and his child were sent back to a bus station and rounded up by waiting cartel coyotes.
Under the Trump administration’s “Migrant Protection Protocols,” asylum seekers are sent back to Mexico as they await legal proceedings. As they wait, migrants often become targets of the cartels, which kidnap thousands of them, the Mexican National Human Rights Commission says.
“I am terrified to be here,’ said another asylum seeker, Claudia López Romero, in an interview with VICE.
David recounted how dozens of women and children were “treated like pieces of meat” as their Nuevo Laredo cartel kidnappers extorted thousands of dollars from their relatives working for minimum wages.
“[The U.S. border patrol agents] told us they were going to bring us to a shelter,” David told VICE News, just a few hours before the cartel abducted he and his child. “They lied.”

Something doesn’t add up here. Why would the warheads fly over Kuwait to attack this oil processing facility, when that would also indicate that the warhead flew over Iraq. Or was there a waypoint over Kuwait, and it hugged the coast?
And for all the Saudi spend on military gear, it looks like this was a huge fail to keep their key refinery infrastructure secure from attack.
Everything about this has a whiff of wag the dog.
Do the Houthis have the capabilities to carry out this kind of attack. Do the Iranians?
With all the lying SOBs involved, there’s no one here you can trust about who was behind this, especially Trump. And he’s outsourcing the important decisions to the Saudis, who want to put the screws to the Iranians.

We’ve seen how states with Republican control react to initiatives they don’t like too. Florida successfully undid an initiative by passing an end-around bill that functionally invalidated said initiative to give former Felons their vote back via legal bullshit.
They will find a way to undo it because they functionally hold all the power anyway, and damn the voters.

Yep — California was red until it wasn’t. But California never made an effort to disenfranchise voters — and that’s not true of the southern states or modern red states. They all try to guarantee remaining red in perpetuity by suppressing votes.

The special effects aren’t as impressive today as they were then, but the writing and acting hold up just fine. And the political warnings/commentary are more relevant now than then.

I rewatched some of Voyager not long ago. Some good episodes but really a missed opportunity on that series. Even though the ship was on a one way trip back to earth, they could have done multi-episode arcs more often instead of just “monster/anomaly/system failure of the week” which made it feel like a weaker version of TNG.
Also, if you weren’t aware Jeri Ryan is reprising her role as Seven of Nine in the new Picard show.

Cokie Roberts was the daughter of TWO members of Congress, Majority Leader Hale Boggs (D-La.) and Lindy Boggs (D-La.). Her father disappeared on a charter plane flight in Alaska in 1972. Her mother won the special election to replace him, then was elected to eight more terms in her own right.

I like good special effects but don’t need them to enjoy a good story. However, bad special effects will take me right out of an otherwise good show. If there is an explosion or monster that looks like I rendered it on my home PC in an afternoon I just can’t get past it. I would rather they just film it in a way that leaves it to your imagination.

The visual effects haven’t aged well, but IMHO it remains outstanding in terms of writing, themes, overall story from start to end (even the weakest “event/monster of the week” episodes tie into the overall story and greater plotlines), acting and character development.

Okay, here it is a nutshell: Dudebro kid asks Harris about how she would handle “so called Assault Rifles” while protecting the Second Amendment. (The kid actually air quoted when he said “Assault rifles”)
Harris said that if congress won’t act she will resort to executive action to put in place a ban on the import of Assault weapons and explore implementing a buyback program for those already on the streets. She stressed the importance of doing the Buyback “right” and not making it seem like a gun grab.
She then asked the audience of college students how many had been through active shooter drills in school. Everyone raised their hand. Harris then said this frustrates her because students should be: “More concerned with filling your heads with math and science than worrying about someone who’s going to run up into the classroom with a gun”.
She reiterates that if she is elected President and congress does not act on Gun legislation within 100 days she will begin taking executive action to ban import of Assault weapons and implement Universal background checks, adding, in reference to Congressional inaction on guns: “I’m done” (i.e. done sitting around waiting for something to change).
Then the audience applauds wildly.

There are a lot of unanswered questions about this incident. The story is that the three now-deceased teens approached the residents in their own front yard, attempted to rob them, and then opened fire. How were the residents able to avoid being shot if the robbers confronted them and fired first? It’s possible of course that they just ran and the bandits missed but it’s something that needs to be determined.
How was one of them able to get his rifle and shoot the three while they remained in the yard? It might have been leaning against the front door for all we know, but this is something we need to find out.
Was it really an “assault weapon,” as described by a neighbor who witnessed the incident? Any scary looking black gun is an “assault weapon” to a lot of people Police have yet to specifically identify the weapon.
Of course ammosexuals will betray their limited intelligence by trumpeting this incident from the mountain-tops, as proof that “assault weapons,” semi-auto rifles with large mags, are somehow essential for self defense. If you really have to use deadly force, you will use whatever weapons come to hand. That might be a rock, a club, or an AR-15 if you have one. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t alternatives (pump shotguns for example) that would work at least as well for that purpose without presenting such a massive risk to society.

I’m paying $5.99/month, but I’m on the cheap plan with commercials. There’s a slightly more expensive commercial-free option. A season of DISCOVERY ran 14-15 episodes, so about 18-24 dollars in the cheap plan, assuming no mid-season break vs. $29.99 for the DVD set at the evil Wallyworld.
Or you could subscribe at the end of the series and binge-watch, then cancel, as a lot of viewers do.
I really think the ammosexual idea of “self defense” involves shooting at greater ranges than a shotgun could manage, and at a lot more targets than you could hit with 5 or 6 rounds before a prolonged reloading process. This matches the idea of shooting into a mob of “others” marching down the road to loot suburbia “when the welfare checks stop.”
