In Which Donald Trump Attacks Rep. Ilhan Omar Again by Pushing a False Smear That She “Danced on 9/11”

Politics • Views: 20,365

As Trump’s inner circle shrinks and there are fewer and fewer people around him to advise against his vile impulses, his racism and bigotry are getting more and more overt. Today he retweeted a far right “comedian” who falsely described a video of Rep. Ilhan Omar as “partying on 9/11.”

President Donald Trump on Wednesday used his Twitter account to boost a baseless smear claiming that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) danced at an event last week on the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, a claim that’s based on footage that wasn’t actually taken from that day.

Trump’s tweet circulated a video from conservative personality Terrence Williams, in which Williams declared that Omar “partied on the anniversary of 9/11.” In his video, Williams comments on footage of the Muslim congresswoman dancing and fumes that she’s disrespecting the memory of the Sept. 11 attacks.

But the footage of Omar dancing actually came from a Sept. 13 event hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus and wasn’t taken on the 11th, as Williams and Trump wrongly claimed.

The video is now deleted, but Twitter told the Daily Beast’s Will Sommer that they did not delete it.

Deleted or not, it did its intended job — to get the smear out there, where it will now be repeated endlessly by right wingers all over the internet. And the president* of the United States helped it happen.

TBH that’s why I’m not optimistic even if we beat Trump. 35% of this country is deranged af

That Cesar Sayoc was incompetent does not change what he planned, so we’ve already crossed the “Trump makes lists, people try to cross off list with bombs” threshold…

…but I think that’s missing the point.

This rhetoric has gotten people killed, just not hardened targets like politicians.

Trump uses Ilhan Omar as a synecdoche for every Muslim-as-dangerous-other trope, but the general message of Muslims-as-dangerous-other is also conveyed. Or rather, is repeated, since the current Trump Right is building new lies from the available tropes of older lies that have gotten people killed for eighteen years.

Trump’s lie works because there’s an audience accepting the lie. They’re willing to believe that anybody not like them—and there are many versions of “not like them” and no fixed pattern—is utterly depraved and Not Really American. Not thinking and being cruel are net gains for them: why trade self-affirming certitude for pleasure-less nuance? Anger at the amorphous idea of “radical Muslims” has killed Sikhs and Hindus as well as Muslims. It’s the basis of allowing the military to kill hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and feeling no responsibility when the destabilization kills a million. This is not about reality, it’s about the incontinent emotional want of people raised to believe that what they feel as true, even as they throw contempt at the notion that the feelings and bodies of others matter.

Looks like Netanyahu has cancelled an upcoming trip he’d planned:

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday canceled a visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week amid political uncertainty in Israel, where he appeared to fall short of a government majority in national elections.

With more than 90 percent of the votes counted, Netanyahu’s decade-long grip on power appeared to be slipping. His center-right Likud party was expected to win 31 seats, while its main rival, the centrist Blue and White party, was pulling ahead with 32 seats, according to the Central Election Committee.

That could give his rival, Blue and White leader Benny Gantz, the first chance to form a new government, if he can put together a coalition with other parties. But it’s not clear whether Gantz will join with the Likud party if Netanyahu continues to be its leader.

Also despite my advanced age of 66 I rarely tire while walking around out in public, and at home I have this thing for my desk called “a chair.” Said chair has wheels and swivels in case I need to move it.

Highly processed soy proteins. It is fine if your concern is not killing animals, but there is evidence that it is actually less healthy than just eating beef.

Interesting little history fact from wikipedia:

President Ulysses S. Grant, fearing disruption of the transition of power to Rutherford B. Hayes (because of the latter’s contested Election of 1876) had the new president-elect secretly sworn into office in the Red Room the evening before the inauguration. The Grants used the Red Room as a family living room.

I feel like in January 2021 there’s going to be an edit for the Supreme Court building “due to fears that President Trump would fuck shit up, Chief Justice John Roberts invited [insert president-elect name] to the Supreme Court to be secretly sworn in the night before the inauguration.”

There was a TV series that did a better job than the David lynch botch job, but the point is that they missed the key elements of the book, namely a future in which any technology that replaces humans (namely computers and genetic engineering) is forbidden, thus forcing people to rely on developing their own mental powers or using spice and sappho juice to expand them artificially.
